    This research project aimed to disclose the reasons and background on why the so-called sectarian conflicts have prevailed in all over the Middle East since the middle of 2000s. Cases typical are the civil war in Iraq (2006-07), extreme intolerance of IS against the other sects during their control over Iraq and Syria (2014-17), and ongoing “New Cold War” in the Middle East, inflamed by Saudi Arabia and Iran. During three-years project, research team, composed of the researchers on Iraq, Lebanon, Iran, Yemen, Arab Gulf monarchies, conducted the field researches in the targeted regions, using various methodologies, such as opinion poll and media analysis. During the project period, International Workshop was organized inviting prominent political scientists including F. Haddad, M. Valbjorn, and M.O. Jones. Their contributed chapters were included in our book titled “Sectarian Issues in the Contemporary Middle East”, published from Koyo Shobo in March 2019.

    This research project was divided into five groups (Headquarters, European Seas, Indian Ocean, Maritime Southeast Asia, and Seas around Japan) to prepare for full-scale research from April 2018 based on history, culture and society. It aims to explore how to solve and/or avoid the conflicts in the past. Each group deepened the understanding of the overall picture of this research project and exchanged opinions with other groups. Hayase wrote for "WASEDA ONLINE" entitled "From the Sea of Conflict to the Sea of Commons" in Japanese and in English and concluded in this essay as follows: "If they allocate their military budget for disputes to a budget for protecting the environment and natural resources instead, their people will be able to enjoy the blessings of the sea and live better lives. If we can demonstrate academically how to effectively improve the sea and transform it from the conflict into the commons, academics can contribute to the settlement of these disputes."

    This project undertook a comparative and genealogical approach to modern Islamic scientific/technological and regional socio/economic issues, focusing on Southeast Asia, Middle East, Central Asia and other related areas.
    Based on well-coordinated preparatory arrangements with local scholars and researchers, each Japanese team performed innovative research activities in the fields of classical astronomy, ceramics, pharmaceutics, and architecture in the most updated analytical context, resulting in the promotion studies of Islamic cultural preservation activities. Those contemporary socio/economic issues, confronted by modern Islamic societies and economies, were also grappled sometimes from critical viewpoints, producing most updated analyses of ICT application, social medical services and Islamic finance. A series of six symposia brouht to the fore vivid developments of constructive Islamic developments which will contribute to the benefits for both Islamic and non-Islamic societies.

    This research project is to analyse the conflicts in the Middle East and Asia, and study various social and political factors that might be obstacles to the function of state apparatus in the post-conflict situations.
    In this research we mainly focused on the processes of political reconstruction, including democratization and institutionalisation of state apparatus in the post-conflicts state, such as Iraq, Lebanon and Afghanistan. Through our research we found that the traditional social networks such as ethnic, sectarian, and tribal ties, are strongly reflected in the newly established electoral systems in the post-conflict states. It is because of the quick introduced formality of democratic system in which the political parties and organizations have not developed yet to represent diverse voices from the society properly. It is also worth noting that this process, including regime changes, was accelerated by the external actors, after the intervention of foreign powers.
    We also clarified that the traditional social networks played an important role in maintaining governing mechanism in the authoritarian regimes. It led us to recognize the significance in studying the uninstitutional networks that support the stability of authoritarian regimes.
    It was a great opportunity for us to witness and experience the so-called" Arab Springs" during our research project. Analysing each case of the" Arab Springs", we concluded that we need to introduce new method of analysis, combining the new institutionalism, new social movement theory, and international relations.

    This study was coordinated among five scholars and explored area-study oriented research subjects with focus on the politico-social role now being played by' Contemporary Arabic' in the midst of today's information revolution and mass-communication development. Formed in the process of nation-state building and modernization in the Arab world, Contemporary Arabic has reflected tenuous links between linguistic environments and socio-political transformation. Then this study firstly dealt with relations of the two types of languages, Standard Arabic(Fusha) and Colloquial/Dialect Arabic(' Ammiyya), with social identity and social movements such as Islamic ones. The role of Arabic in the Arab revolution since 2011was also examined according to situations. After these researches, the data base for Arabic dictionary as a tool for our' Contemporary Arabic' project has been improved in addition.

    1) History of technology : Through the studies of the reconstruction of sugar production in agriculture, the analysis of Islamic ceramic in ceramic industry and the consideration on the medical science relating to the social consciousness, the genealogy of Islamic technology from the Early Islamic period to the period just before the Modern age was recovered. 2) Broad-region studies : Through the analysis of the Islamic societies at Middle East, South-Eastern Asia and Central Asia, the movements of the area became evident including the case where the economic activity based on the regional features became extinct because of the appearance of new resources, and the cases where the current IT has been applicated positively to the many fields of the Islamic societies.

    本研究は、これまでのステレオタイプ的なシーア派観はもとより、シーア派が「問題化」する構造を解明するために、構築主義的な観点を導入し、シーア派の哲学思想・宗教実践・社会集団化のコンテクストを分析することを課題とした。研究分担者・研究協力者が会合を持って、これまでの研究を振り返り、自らの研究の取り組みについて議論したのみならず、英国・イラン・アメリカ・アラブ首長国連邦・レバノンから一線級の研究者を招聘して意見交換をし、交流の道を開き、こちらからも10カ国以上に赴いて資料収集・現地調査・研究発表などを行った。こうして得た成果は多岐にわたるが、以下のようにまとめられるだろう。
    1.多様性:さまざまな例が示され、シーア派とはいっても、その集団としてのありようや位置づけが多様であることが、明らかになった。それは、立場の違い(サラフィーヤ主義者とシーア派信徒)や国・地域の違いのみならず、一つの地域・家族でも状況の変化によるシーア派アイデンティティに変化があることが分かった。
    2.新しい学問的アプローチ:思想研究に歴史的観点を導入する、「人」という観点から思想の展開や指導者の条件を見直す、思想の中のモチーフの見直し、などアプローチや観点を変えることで、新たな知見を得た。
    3.ローカルとグローバルのインターフェース:宗派として国民国家のなかに位置づけられる際にも、国際的な力学や国家を越えるネットワークが関連すること、宗派の絆のグローバルな経済活動への活用、信徒や学者の国を越えた移動の実際、などが明らかとなった。
    4.これまでの研究の空白を埋める:そしてシーア派としての制度・知の再生産にかかわるイスラーム法学者のありさまや教育の実態、宗教的慣行など、十分に解明されてこなかったピックも本研究で考察の対象となり、さまざまな発見があった。

    Major activities of this project were conducted in the three fields, namely, research meetings, material collection and development of data bases and educational resources.
    In the research meetings, we have studies the nature of the Arabic language from area studies perspectives, and examined the current conditions of Arabic teaching in Japanese higher education from a strategic point of view. Upon the findings of these studies, we made a strategic plan for developing Arabic education and its practical resources in relation to area studies.
    We have collected a wide range of Arabic materials, published in both Arab and Western countries, such as textbooks, teaching materials, dictionaries, encyclopedias and print media materials, which we used for developing our resources.
    Through date base building and resource development, we have produced a CD-ROM data base of Arabic periodicals in circulation, a comprehensive book of Arabic Verb patterns, an advanced Arabic grammar, that was seriously needed, and a manual of Arabic grammar. We have also made a comparative study of Arabic grammatical terms in Japanese. In order to develop an Arabic corpus, we invited a native intellectual who produced a book of essays. As a material for advanced learners, we have produced a Japanese translation with its Arabic original, taken from al-Sadr's writings.
    We have prepared several lists of specialized technical terms (Arabic to Japanese) such as Islamic law and Islamic finance. World counting was conducted and a Japanese-Arabic timeline as a new form of language materials are also prepared.
    This project aimed to produce an Arabic education in a manner integrated with area studies. The achievements have been implemented in Graduate School of Asian and African Area Studies at Kyoto University. A series of above mentioned materials should serve as a basis for further development of educational resources for Arabic teaching in higher education in Japan.

    l. As for the work for database construction of international Arab research information network, the questionnaire about the present condition of the Arab research database were sent to researchers and research organizations (600 overseas fellows and 100 domestic fellows) in Japan and overseas. We made the extensive list of Arabic research institutes in the world. We exchanged opinions with the overseas research organization about Arabic research database construction and about the way international common use will be performed in the future (for United Kingdom in 1997, for Malaysia in 1998, for the United Arab Emirates and Yemen in 1999, and Saudi Arabia in 2000).
    2. As for the work for development of an Arab electronic encyclopedia system, we constructed Arab tribal name database, and published A Dictionary of Arab Tribes. This database is now tentatively made accessible to the public on the homepage of Prof. Jun'ichi Oda (research associate of this project) of the Institute for the Study of Languages and Cultures of Asia and Africa at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. We made computerized text-database for the Arabic original of Arabian Nights (the Thousand Nights and One Night). Based on this database, we are planning to publish A Dictionary of Cultural Idioms in the Arabian Nights. Arabic literary research / translation reference database in Japan was also created, and the report was published on the basis of this database. The Arabic linguistic research reference database in Japan was also created, and the report was published on the basis of this database. We are now under construction of the database for intermediate Arabic Dictionary.

    In 1875, Nagamine Hideki, a teacher at the Naval Academy, made a Japanese translation of the 1001 Nights from G. F. Townsend&#039;s English version. This was the first translation of the 1001 Nights in Japan. Since Nagamine, a number of translations have appeared, among which two complete translations were well-known and wide-spread, namely the one made from R.F. Burton&#039;s and the other from J. C. Mardrus&#039;. All of these, however, were not made from the original Arabic, but were retranslations made from different European languages. In addition, most of the translators in Japan were not orientalists, but literary men who had no knowledge of Arabic and Islam. Among them were famous writers like Kawabata Yasunari and Kikuchi Kan, though many of their translations had been limited to juvenile stories. In 1966, the first translation of the Nights from the original Arabic was made by the late Maejima Shinji, who was then a professor at Keio University and a pioneer orientalists in Japan. His translation is entitled &quot;Arabian Naito&quot; in Japanese after the famous English title and based on Calcutta II (Macnaghten), emended by Bulaq, Breslau, Cairo, Beyrut and some other editions, and supplemented by a few independent texts like that of L. Langres. An additional volume in 1985, which contains &quot;Ala ed-Din and the Marvellous Lamp&quot; and &quot;Ali Baba and the Forty Robbers&quot;, is based on H. Zotenberg&#039;s and D. B. Macdonald&#039;s respectively. By 1983, twelve volumes had been published and, after his death in 1983, Ikeda Osamu, a professor of Arabic at Osaka University of Foreign Studies, succeeded him. Maejima&#039;s translation which renders the whole text, though still being published, is very faithful to Calcutta II edition. His style, when compared with his predecessors&#039;, seems to be simple, dry and slightly old-fashioned but, at the same time, charming and veryreadable. As for the accuracy of his rendering, it can be compared with that of Enno Littmann which is said to be the best translation of the 1001 Nights. This accuracy and faithfulness to the original makes his work suited not only for entertainment but also for scholarly use. Maejima&#039;s translation has rich and valuable annotations which occupy about 20 pages in each volume and cover a wide field of Arab-Islamic cultures. He also adds a good epilogue at the end of each volume. He expended 20-30 pages for epilogue to analyze the stories contained in the volume and the 1001 Nights itself, to compare the texts and translations of the Nights, and to explain Arabic history, literature, society, religion, folklore and so on. This epilogue is based on the latest studies in Europe, the United States and Japan, and therefore is the most outstanding feature of Maejima&#039;s work in the history of the translation of 1001 Nights.
