  • Stepwise Cooling Events in the Western Arctic at 8.2 and 4.2 ka: Proxy Development and Application

    Abstract

    Hydroxylated glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraether (GDGT)‐based proxies have recently been proposed for reconstructing sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in polar oceans, but their reliability has not yet been sufficiently validated. We investigated the spatial distribution of hydroxylated GDGTs in surface sediments from the western Arctic Ocean and the Bering Sea to evaluate the reliability of these proxies and apply them to a sediment core from the Chukchi inner shelf to reconstruct Holocene SST variability. Among the four tested proxies, the RI‐OH’ index shows the strongest correlation with annual mean SST, marking it the most reliable and well‐calibrated SST proxy for this region. The RI‐OH’‐based SST reconstruction reveals two major cooling events at 9.1–8 ka and 4.6–3.7 ka. The earlier event coincides with intensified inflow of cold Pacific Winter Water into the Chukchi Sea, while the latter event is linked to expanded sea ice cover and advance of Alaskan glaciers, likely driven by regional shifts in atmospheric and oceanic circulation. A brief SST decline at 8.3 ka, concurrent with the well‐known 8.2 ka event, is observed for the first time in the western Arctic Ocean. The latter cooling episode aligns with the 4.2 ka climate event across the Northern Hemisphere, suggesting that the Arctic climate dynamics contributed to the broader Holocene climatic transition.

    <jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>A 1108.6 m long core was recovered at Site U1457 located on the Indus Fan in the Laxmi Basin of the eastern Arabian Sea during IODP Expedition 355. Shipboard examinations defined five lithologic units (I to V) of the lower Paleocene to Holocene sedimentary sequence. In this study, δ<jats:sup>13</jats:sup>C values of sedimentary organic matter (SOM) confirm the differentiation of the lithologic units and further divide units III and IV into two subunits (1 and 2). Based on the underlying assumption that the SOM is decided primarily by a mixture of marine and terrestrial origins, δ<jats:sup>13</jats:sup>C<jats:sub>SOM</jats:sub> values at Site U1457 provide information on the terrestrial catchment conditions since late Miocene time. Low δ<jats:sup>13</jats:sup>C<jats:sub>SOM</jats:sub> values from late Miocene to late Pleistocene times are similar (<jats:italic>c</jats:italic>. −22.0 ‰) for the most part, reflecting a consistent contribution of terrestrial organic matter from the catchment areas characterized by dominant C3 land plants. Significantly lower δ<jats:sup>13</jats:sup>C<jats:sub>SOM</jats:sub> values (<jats:italic>c</jats:italic>. −24.0 ‰) in Unit III-2 (∼8 to ∼7 Ma) might be due to a greater input of C3 terrestrial organic matter. The increase in δ<jats:sup>13</jats:sup>C<jats:sub>SOM</jats:sub> values at ∼7 Ma and the appearance of high δ<jats:sup>13</jats:sup>C<jats:sub>SOM</jats:sub> values (<jats:italic>c</jats:italic>. −18.0 ‰) within Unit III-1 (∼7 to ∼2 Ma) indicate that C4 biomass overwhelmed the terrestrial catchment environment as a result of enhanced terrestrial aridity in the Himalayan foreland. The three-end-member simple mixing model, estimating the relative contributions of SOM from terrestrial C3 and C4 plants and marine phytoplankton, supports our interpretation of the distribution of C3 and C4 land plants in the terrestrial catchment environment.</jats:p>

    2023年5月から6月にかけて，霞ヶ浦（西浦）の南東（KS23-01）と北西（KS23-02）の2地点において，パーカッションピストンコアラーを用いて，長さ4 mを超えるコア試料を採取した．また，各地点ではリムノスコアラーであらかじめ表層堆積物を乱さずに採取した．いずれのコアも長さ約1 mに切断した後，縦に半割し，それぞれ記載と写真撮影をおこなった．
    半割した片方の試料はCTスキャン，磁化率の測定，元素濃度測定用にスラブ試料を切り取り，残りは厚さ2 cm間隔で分割した．もう片方は厚さ1 cmより細かな検討を行うためと珪藻分析用に，Lチャンネルを用いて試料を採取した．その残りは，有機物分析用を分取した後，貝形虫および粒度分析用試料とし，厚さ1 cmにカットして保存した．
    高知大学海洋コア国際研究所の機器を借用し，KS22-03，KS22-04，KS23-01, KS23-02コアから得たスラブ試料について，CTスキャンによる堆積構造の観察，マルチセンサーロガーによる磁化率の測定をおこなった．その結果，各試料の堆積構造やその変化を把握することができた．また，KS23-02コアについては複数枚のテフラ層が存在することがわかった．
    KS23-02試料は顕微鏡下での堆積物の観察を行い，浅間Aなど湖内で追跡できるテフラ層を確認し，堆積速度を見積もった．また，KS23-01とKS23-02の試料から得られた二枚貝殻2試料を外部に委託し，14C年代測定を実施した．これらの結果に加え，分析を実施した二枚貝の14C年代測定の結果と合わせて，KS22-04及びKS23-01コアは過去6000年間を，KS23-02は過去3000年間の堆積物を保存していることが明らかになった．さらにKS22-04, 23-01及び23-02コアの全ての試料について，粒度分析を行い，その変化から古環境変遷を検討した．
