    Sediments up to about 50 ka old can be dated by radiocarbon (14C), and typically biogenic carbonate minerals formed by organisms like foraminifera or mollusks are the primary choice for dating. However, carbonate-poor environments, typical for polar seas, limit the possibilities for 14C dating to bulk organic matter (OM), which is typically biased by the old carbon. In this study, ramped pyrolysis-oxidation (RPO) 14C dating of bulk OM was applied to two Arctic Ocean sediment cores with independent age constraints from prior studies in order to assess its applicability in this environment. Application of RPO to Arctic sediment samples yielded a series of progressively older ages with increasing pyrolysis temperatures and with sediment depth, similar to previous applications in Antarctica. The difference between the independently dated carbonate ages and the RPO-derived ages was proportional to the gradient of 14C ages of the released carbon vs. the pyrolysis temperature. Using this empirical relationship, we propose a new method to estimate sediment age based on RPO 14C data. Ages derived by this method in our data set show offsets from the independent age controls mostly under ~700 years. These results are much closer to the actual ages than the bulk OM data. This simple method may have a broad application to sediments with biogenic carbonate deficiency whereby dating is reliant on bulk OM.

    <jats:p>The summer climate of northern Japan since the last glacial period has likely been determined by atmospheric and oceanic dynamics, such as changes in the North Pacific High, the position of the westerlies, the Kuroshio Current, the Tsushima Warm Current (TWC), and the East Asian summer monsoon. However, it is unclear which factor has been most important. In this study, we analyzed leaf wax δ<jats:sup>13</jats:sup>C and δD and glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs) in sediments from Lake Kushu, Rebun Island, northern Japan, and discuss changes in climate over the past 17,000 years. The GDGT-based temperature, the averaged chain length, δ<jats:sup>13</jats:sup>C and δD of long-chain n-fatty acids indicated that the climate was cold during the Oldest Dryas period ∼16 ka and warm in the early Middle Holocene from ∼9 to 6 ka. This climate change is consistent with the sea surface temperature in the Kuroshio–Oyashio transition, but inconsistent with changes in the TWC in the Sea of Japan. The results imply that the summer climate of northern Japan was controlled mainly by changes in the development of the North Pacific High <jats:italic>via</jats:italic> changes in the position of the westerly jet and East Asian summer monsoon rainfall, whereas the influence of the TWC was limited over a millennial timescale.</jats:p>

  • Variations in δ13C values of sedimentary organic matter since late Miocene time in the Indus Fan (IODP Site 1457) of the eastern Arabian Sea

    <jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>A 1108.6 m long core was recovered at Site U1457 located on the Indus Fan in the Laxmi Basin of the eastern Arabian Sea during IODP Expedition 355. Shipboard examinations defined five lithologic units (I to V) of the lower Paleocene to Holocene sedimentary sequence. In this study, δ<jats:sup>13</jats:sup>C values of sedimentary organic matter (SOM) confirm the differentiation of the lithologic units and further divide units III and IV into two subunits (1 and 2). Based on the underlying assumption that the SOM is decided primarily by a mixture of marine and terrestrial origins, δ<jats:sup>13</jats:sup>C<jats:sub>SOM</jats:sub> values at Site U1457 provide information on the terrestrial catchment conditions since late Miocene time. Low δ<jats:sup>13</jats:sup>C<jats:sub>SOM</jats:sub> values from late Miocene to late Pleistocene times are similar (<jats:italic>c</jats:italic>. −22.0 ‰) for the most part, reflecting a consistent contribution of terrestrial organic matter from the catchment areas characterized by dominant C3 land plants. Significantly lower δ<jats:sup>13</jats:sup>C<jats:sub>SOM</jats:sub> values (<jats:italic>c</jats:italic>. −24.0 ‰) in Unit III-2 (∼8 to ∼7 Ma) might be due to a greater input of C3 terrestrial organic matter. The increase in δ<jats:sup>13</jats:sup>C<jats:sub>SOM</jats:sub> values at ∼7 Ma and the appearance of high δ<jats:sup>13</jats:sup>C<jats:sub>SOM</jats:sub> values (<jats:italic>c</jats:italic>. −18.0 ‰) within Unit III-1 (∼7 to ∼2 Ma) indicate that C4 biomass overwhelmed the terrestrial catchment environment as a result of enhanced terrestrial aridity in the Himalayan foreland. The three-end-member simple mixing model, estimating the relative contributions of SOM from terrestrial C3 and C4 plants and marine phytoplankton, supports our interpretation of the distribution of C3 and C4 land plants in the terrestrial catchment environment.</jats:p>

  • Late Miocene changes in C3, C4 and aquatic plant vegetation in the Indus River basin: evidence from leaf wax δ13C from Indus Fan sediments

    <jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>Vegetation changes in the Indus River basin within the past 10.8 million years were investigated based on the analysis of n-fatty acids and their carbon isotopes in sediments from IODP Site U1457 in the Laxmi Basin of the Arabian Sea. The δ<jats:sup>13</jats:sup>C of long-chain n-C<jats:sub>32</jats:sub> fatty acid shifted from −34 to −22 ‰ from 10 to 6.3 Ma, while the δ<jats:sup>13</jats:sup>C of mid-chain n-C<jats:sub>24</jats:sub> fatty acid was nearly constant at around −23 to −22 ‰ over the same period. This large difference in the δ<jats:sup>13</jats:sup>C values suggests that the mid-chain fatty acids reflect the contribution of aquatic vascular C<jats:sub>3</jats:sub> plants. Before 6.3 Ma, the average chain length of n-fatty acids and the δ<jats:sup>13</jats:sup>C values of long-chain fatty acids were negatively correlated, suggesting that the δ<jats:sup>13</jats:sup>C values reflected the relative abundance of terrestrial C<jats:sub>3</jats:sub> versus aquatic C<jats:sub>3</jats:sub> plants in the Indus River basin and western India. After 5.8 Ma, the average chain length was variable, but the δ<jats:sup>13</jats:sup>C values remained nearly the same, suggesting that the δ<jats:sup>13</jats:sup>C values reflected heavier δ<jats:sup>13</jats:sup>C values of both aquatic C<jats:sub>3</jats:sub> and C<jats:sub>4</jats:sub> plants. A three-end-member model calculation suggests that terrestrial C<jats:sub>3</jats:sub> plants were replaced by C<jats:sub>4</jats:sub> plants in the Indus River basin and western India from 9.7 or 8.2 to 6.3 Ma. Aridification in those areas during the late Miocene period may have driven the replacement of terrestrial C<jats:sub>3</jats:sub> plants by C<jats:sub>4</jats:sub> plants. An episodic increase in the abundance of terrestrial plants around 8 Ma is attributed to elevated precipitation by regionally enhanced moisture transport.</jats:p>

    <jats:title>Abstract</jats:title>
    <jats:p>A giant mass-transport complex was recently discovered in the eastern Arabian Sea, exceeding in volume all but one other known complex on passive margins worldwide. The complex, named the Nataraja Slide, was drilled by International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 355 in two locations where it is ∼300 m (Site U1456) and ∼200 m thick (Site U1457). The top of this mass-transport complex is defined by the presence of both reworked microfossil assemblages and deformation structures, such as folding and faulting. The deposit consists of two main phases of mass wasting, each consisting of smaller pulses, with generally fining-upward cycles, all emplaced just prior to 10.8 Ma based on biostratigraphy. The base of the deposit at each site is composed largely of matrix-supported carbonate breccia that is interpreted as the product of debris-flows. In the first phase, these breccias alternate with well-sorted calcarenites deposited from a high-energy current, coherent limestone blocks that are derived directly from the Indian continental margin, and a few clastic mudstone beds. In the second phase, at the top of the deposit, muddy turbidites dominate and become increasingly more siliciclastic. At Site U1456, where both phases are seen, a 20-m section of hemipelagic mudstone is present, overlain by a ∼40-m-thick section of calcarenite and slumped interbedded mud and siltstone. Bulk sediment geochemistry, heavy-mineral analysis, clay mineralogy, isotope geochemistry, and detrital zircon U-Pb ages constrain the provenance of the clastic, muddy material to being reworked, Indus-derived sediment, with input from western Indian rivers (e.g., Narmada and Tapti rivers), and some material from the Deccan Traps. The carbonate blocks found within the breccias are shallow-water limestones from the outer western Indian continental shelf, which was oversteepened from enhanced clastic sediment delivery during the mid-Miocene. The final emplacement of the material was likely related to seismicity as there are modern intraplate earthquakes close to the source of the slide. Although we hypothesize that this area is at low risk for future mass wasting events, it should be noted that other oversteepened continental margins around the world could be at risk for mass failure as large as the Nataraja Slide.</jats:p>

  • Holocene dynamics in the Bering Strait inflow to the Arctic and the Beaufort Gyre circulation based on sedimentary records from the Chukchi Sea

    <jats:p>Abstract. The Beaufort Gyre (BG) and the Bering Strait inflow (BSI) are important elements of the Arctic Ocean circulation system and major controls on the distribution of Arctic sea ice. We report records of the quartz ∕ feldspar and chlorite ∕ illite ratios in three sediment cores from the northern Chukchi Sea, providing insights into the long-term dynamics of the BG circulation and the BSI during the Holocene. The quartz ∕ feldspar ratio, interpreted as a proxy of the BG strength, gradually decreased during the Holocene, suggesting a long-term decline in the BG strength, consistent with an orbitally controlled decrease in summer insolation. We propose that the BG rotation weakened as a result of the increasing stability of sea-ice cover at the margins of the Canada Basin, driven by decreasing insolation. Millennial to multi-centennial variability in the quartz ∕ feldspar ratio (the BG circulation) is consistent with fluctuations in solar irradiance, suggesting that solar activity affected the BG strength on these timescales. The BSI approximation by the chlorite ∕ illite record, despite a considerable geographic variability, consistently shows intensified flow from the Bering Sea to the Arctic during the middle Holocene, which is attributed primarily to the effect of higher atmospheric pressure over the Aleutian Basin. The intensified BSI was associated with decrease in sea-ice concentrations and increase in marine production, as indicated by biomarker concentrations, suggesting a major influence of the BSI on sea-ice and biological conditions in the Chukchi Sea. Multi-century to millennial fluctuations, presumably controlled by solar activity, were also identified in a proxy-based BSI record characterized by the highest age resolution.

    In the Arabian Sea, South Asian monsoon (SAM)-induced high surface water productivity coupled with poor ventilation of intermediate water results in strong denitrification within the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ). Despite the significance of denitrification in the Arabian Sea, we have no long-term record of its evolution spanning the past several million years. Here, we present the first record of denitrification evolution since Late Miocene (∼10.2 Ma) in the Eastern Arabian Sea, where the SAM generates moderate surface water productivity, based on the samples retrieved during the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 355. We find that (i) the SAM was persistently weaker from ∼10.2 to 3.1 Ma
    it did not intensify at ∼8 Ma in contrast to a few previous studies, (ii) on tectonic timescale, both the SAM and the East Asian Monsoon (EAM) varied synchronously, (iii) the first evidence of denitrification and productivity/SAM intensification was at ∼3.2-2.8 Ma that coincided with Mid-Pliocene Warm Period (MPWP), and (iv) the modern strength of the OMZ where denitrification is a permanent feature was attained at ∼1.0 Ma.

    The Arabian Sea in the northern Indian Ocean pre-serves regional sedimentary records of rifting, tectonic subsidence, and paleoceanographic history, and also provides archives of long-term erosion of the Himalaya since the start of collision between In?dia and Eurasia. Investigations reveal that drilling in this region can provide erosion records through analyses of the sediment cores, along with providing age control for the regional seismic stratigraphy. It is only by quantifying the volume of sedi?ment deposited in the fan that researchers can mass balance the volume of bedrock eroded from the mountains, constrained by thermochronology, with the volume of eroded rock deposited in the offshore and in the foreland basin.
