     View Summary

BACKGROUND: Visually impaired people have been considered only as “receivers” of support; however, few studies have considered them as “givers” of support to sighted people. OBJECTIVE: To support the walking of sighted people using information available specifically to the visually impaired. METHODS: Utilizing white cane usage data of visually impaired people to create inaccessibility maps for sighted people. RESULTS: A user study conducted with elderly people and their stakeholders, who had high accessibility needs found that the maps were generally useful as long as they were within the user’s area of interest. CONCLUSIONS: Although the proposed method should be practically beneficial to users, the information detected by the system should be expanded from white cane use data, its accuracy, and more data collected from visually impaired people.

  • How Gaze Visualization Facilitates Initiation of Informal Communication in 3D Virtual Spaces

     View Summary

This study explores how gaze visualization in virtual spaces facilitates the initiation of informal communication. Three styles of gaze cue visualization (arrow, bubbles, and miniature avatar) with two types of gaze behavior (one-sided gaze and joint gaze) were evaluated. 96 participants used either a non-visualized gaze cue or one of the three visualized gaze cues. The results showed that all visualized gaze cues facilitated the initiation of informal communication more effectively than the non-visualized gaze cue. For one-sided gaze, overall, bubbles had more positive effects on the gaze receiver's behaviors and experiences than the other two visualized gaze cues, although the only statistically significant difference was in the verbal reaction rates. For joint gaze, all three visualized gaze cues had positive effects on the receiver's behaviors and experiences. The design implications of the gaze visualization and the confederate-based evaluation method contribute to research on informal communication and social virtual reality.

We propose an operation support system with augmented reality technology. The system can be used to reduce the cognitive load of doctors when doing ultrasonic diagnostics in an operation room. Our system displays ultrasonic images in 3D on the basis of 3D position sensing by a pair of a camera and a marker and three simple interaction methods to compensate for limitations in 3D position sensing. The key function of the system is to project virtual organs created by ultrasonic diagnostics onto the real ones. We worked with a medical doctor to do experiments on the prototype system and found that the system was effective.

In this study, we investigated the relationship between phases of meeting and non-verbal speech information. We considered that conversations at the meeting must show information to phases of the meeting as non-verbal features. We attempted to discriminate between the divergence phase and the convergence phase by the decision tree method using only non-verbal speech information. We performed an experiment with a group task based on a modification of the game Twenty-Questions and recorded participants' speech data. In a discrimination test, we used the recorded speech, and defined non-verbal speech features such as switching pauses (i.e. silent intervals between the utterance of two speakers), frequency for each turn-taking pattern and duration. We conducted the two discrimination tests for using parameters with friends group, with strangers group and with both groups. From the results, the accuracy of the open test is 77.3%, 85.2% and 77.3%, respectively. Taking into account only non-verbal speech information was used, we consider these results to be fairly good.

     View Summary

Current map systems fail to provide the information that a walker really needs. Because the information that the walker wants is always changing. Current map systems are inadequate because of giving only one index in indication of a map. The conventional map expression technique have used only one kind of indexes such as a sight substance, a hearing substance, or a sensitivity substance. In contrast, an aim of our study is map expression of the forms that system compound, and each layer supplements them each other. Our map is made by investigating at first which kind of map should be used for the promotion of the human geographical recognition. Therefore this paper investigated the number of the landmark in their recognition and the difference between persons who could read a map well and who could not. We carried out three experiments. The first experiment is designed to find out the differences in the concrete landmark between persons who understood a map and who cannot read a map. The second experiment was based on the result of the first experiment and clarified of the important element except the visual object in the human cognitive map. The third additional experiment was performed with the result of the second experiment to examine how map system show multimedia elements. The technique of four kinds of map expression designs was implied from the result of three experiments. And the Layerd-map model is proposed as a presentation method to display them adequately.

We explore how meeting members modify their responses to feedback according to the feedback modality and the feedback recipients. We conducted a field study and compared four feedback conditions: three using vibrotactile modality (chair vibration) and one using visual modality (spotlight flashing). The three vibrotactile conditions differ in the feedback recipients: potential speaker (a member whom other members would like to hear speak next, or a member who is willing to speak next), current speaker, and all members. Regarding the modality, the vibrotactile modality provided a moderate level of distraction of members and led to more turn-taking than the visual modality. Regarding the recipients, members felt more positively about feedback when potential speaker, rather than current speaker, received feedback. Also members resulted in more turn-taking when all members or current speaker, rather than potential speaker, received feedback.

Our goal is to estimate social signals such as degree of interest and degree of consent from users' posture for the purpose of supporting face-to- face discussion. We used a pressure sensor to discriminate the posture of the user. Main posture of the people under discussion is a total of 12 postures including four body parts - head (three postures), torso part (three postures), arm part (three postures), leg part (three postures). First, from the pressure distribution information of the time series, we examine the feature quantity effective for posture discrimination and the extraction method of the feature quantity. We next conducted discrimination using SVM using extracted feature quantities. As a result, the discrimination accuracy of the four body parts was 56.6%, 56.5%, 79.0%, and 82.0%, respectively.

Enbodied interaction has emerged in recent years as a discipline that integrates the physical, physiological, cognitive and emotional aspects of a person's complete interaction with a digital environment. We describe Vuzik, an application that allows users to manipulate and arrange music through whole body movement, and the user study with fourteen elementary students. Vuzik is designed to foster experiences in creative expression for children. The application responds to users' movements by changing music variables through their drawing picture with pallet and brush on the large display as canvas. The user study to compare existing tool suggests that Vuzik encourages grasp of the entire picture and improves ease of learning.

     View Summary

Through a study of comic design practice, we observed that comic designers created three components. character-config, plot, and storyboard. and used a trial-and-error approach with iterative progression from less detailed to more detailed representations during the early stages of design. However, existing comic design tools do not support these tasks very well. In the light of these observations, we created a system that helps comic designers in the early stages of design. Our prototype supports sketching input, allows seamless movement backward or forward among the different granularities of representations across the three components, and concurrent use of multiple related sheets. We performed an informal evaluation with one professional designer and found that she reacted positively to the concept and was interested in using such a system in her work.
