Profile

My research focuses on Japanese history and culture, with particular attention to the ways political power is exercised through norms and deviance, the biases embedded in historical records, and the role of “outsiders” in embodying and transmitting tradition. I have explored these themes through the study of male court attire from the Heian to Kamakura periods. More recently, my work has expanded to examine how Heian-era traditions were interpreted and studied during the Edo period.

Since my graduate studies, I have had numerous opportunities to teach and work in English. For a period, I served as a full-time English instructor. I currently teach Japanese history and culture in an English-language degree program.

    Although the main texts for understanding the Japanese court dress have been manuals produced from the twelfth century onward, in using such texts as sources, flawed editions compiled in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries have been widely used. This study examined manuscript copies of such manuals, in particular those of Jomuchihisho from the late twelfth century, and obtained a text that is closer to the original. The identity of the manual's editor was also studied. In addition, the evidential research conducted by Edo-based scholars of samurai origin in the late eighteenth century were scurtinized and their contribution to the spread of knowledge outside the imperial court was clarified.

    In medieval Japan, many books on garments and accessories, including swords, harnesses, and carts, were written and compiled by courtiers as guides to the complicated proprieties of court life. While these works have been a rich resource for the study of clothing, research on the books themselves has not necessarily been extensive, leaving much room for investigation, starting from the search for better manuscripts, textual criticism, and the collation of quotes, to study of the authors' aims and motives. Based on this premise, this project undertook research on one of these works, Kazarisho by Minamoto Michikata (1189-1239).
    With the support of the grant, I was able to examine different manuscript versions, collect related literature, and investigate the content of Kazarisho and other works. As a result, I could reconstruct the sequence of the passages likely to be closer to the original, correct transcriptions, and gain new insight into the character of these works.

  • 12・13世紀を中心とした装束書の研究

    本年度は『助無智秘抄』を中心に研究を進めた。本書については、12世紀半ばの成立は覆らないものの、成立年を永万2年とするのは誤りであること、片仮名と平仮名（臨時巻のみ）の2系統の本文があること、片仮名本のうち陽明文庫本が多くの写本の祖本として重要であること、本文に『蓬莱抄』や『侍中群要』等からの引用が多く含まれること等が明らかになった。上記の途中経過については明月記研究会で報告し、有用な助言を得た。また今後の課題として、蔵人や近衛に関わる記述が多いことや、平行義の子孫に関する記述の意味、編者、『満佐須計装束抄』等なぜこの時期に（仮名の）装束抄が多く書かれるようになったのか等といった課題を得た。 

  • 日本中世を中心とした調度としての衣服研究

    まず前年度から引き続き、東アジアを主題とする先行研究を中心に、衣服を調度として飾る行為について調査を進めた。また並行して、これまで行なってきた直衣や男性の宿直装束に関する研究を進めた。その中で、直衣とも関連する白い衣服の意味に関する研究に至り、平安時代を中心とした日本における白い衣服に関する事例を調査するとともに、中国や朝鮮半島との比較研究を進めた。

  • 11～13世紀における調度としての衣服研究

    10世紀から13世紀の日本の支配者層社会の服飾について、大きく2つの方向から研究を進めた。まず1つめは、前近代の日本に見られる衣服を調度として飾る行為を、世界史的文脈に位置付けることを目指すものである。平安時代・鎌倉時代を中心に、衣服を室内や車に飾り付け、時にそれを贈答品とする行為について事例の収集を進めると同時に、他の時代や他の地域の服飾文化に関する先行研究を調査し、比較し得る習慣の有無の調査を行なった。もう1つの方向として、これまでの研究を発展させる形で、平安時代・鎌倉時代初期の支配者層社会において、権力の掌握・維持や支配力強化等に服飾がどのように用いられたかについて研究を進めた。

  • 院政期の朝廷における着用衣服の指定と逸脱の様相

    私は主に日本の平安・鎌倉時代の朝廷社会を題材に、服装が権力者の自己演出や集団統制等に果たした役割について研究している。本研究課題では、従来、固定的なものとして理解されがちであった朝廷の服装規範を、絶えず変容し、貴族自身にとっても正解を得難い難問として捉え直し、その実態に迫るため、誰がどのように規範を定め、誰がいつどの程度それに従っていたのかを分析することを目指した。具体的には、後白河～後鳥羽院政期を対象に、着用衣服の事前通達とその実施の実態を探るのに適した事例を抽出し、情報の伝達経路や最終的な着用衣服の決定論理、通達や先例からの逸脱が引き起こす人々の反応およびその社会的意義を分析することを目的とした。研究課題の実施においては、記録として『山槐記』・『兵範記』・『吉記』・『明月記』、また『餝抄』等の故実書から、行事に際する着用衣服の事前通達をめぐる具体的な様相を探れる事例の収集をすすめた。その際には、本研究費により、史料とする文献や先行研究文献の収集、文献の読解に必要な工具書の購入等が可能となった。また、特に注目される一連の史料として、後鳥羽院の御幸関連の史料がある。本研究課題遂行中に、所属する明月記研究会により、後鳥羽院の重要な離宮である水無瀬御所の現地見学会が開催されたので、本研究費を利用して参加することができた。御幸に際しては、様々な場面で別の衣服の着用が求められたが、遺跡を実地に見学し、また現地の研究者および研究会所属の研究者達と情報交換を行なうことにより、当時の様子について一定の実感を伴なって理解を深めることができた。当初目的としていた着用衣服の事前通達に関する事例については、完全に網羅するところまではまだ遠いが、ある程度の事例を収集できた。しかし、予想以上に好例が少なく、事例収集に時間がかかってしまった。収集した事例の分析にはまだ着手したばかりであるので、まとまった成果を得るにはもう少し時間が必要となっている。一方で、本課題と併行して取り組んでいる課題として、当該時期の朝廷社会において、衣服が贈答品や室内装飾として利用された実態の解明があるが、利用する史料や先行研究の一部は本課題と重複するので、本研究費の恩恵により当該課題の研究も進展させることができた。特に、風流および唐物をキーワードとして贈答や装飾のありかたや意義を探り、これに関しては学会発表を行なうことができた。その他、研究期間中に、本課題が対象としている院政期の服装をよく表現していると考えられる『石山寺縁起絵巻』が滋賀県立近代美術館で公開されたので、本研究費を利用して見学することができた。原本を間近で見学し、当該期の衣服や身振り等について多くの知見を得ることができた。
