  • A Semester-Long Study of Second Language Writing Development and the Effects of Topic Familiarity and Difficulty

    This study explored the development of second language writing as well as the effects of topic familiarity and difficulty with respect to syntactic complexity and lexical diversity. Over the course of one semester, 10 Japanese learners of English watched scenes from the movie “Titanic” (Cameron, 1997) and wrote reports on different topics related to the movie. Overall, 82 reports (token = 9,974) were analyzed via linear mixed-effects models. The results of this study reveal the development of syntactic complexity over the course of 15 weeks, while the effects of topic familiarity and difficulty are not statistically significant. This study elucidates the pattern of second language writing development over the course of a semester and suggests implications for topic-related writing research.本研究は第二言語ライティングの発達およびトピックの親しみやすさと難しさのライティングにおける影響を語彙多様性と統語的複雑性の観点から調査した。調査期間は一学期間で、10名の日本人英語学習者が授業内で映画『タイタニック』(キャメロン 1997) をシーンごとに見て、映画に関する異なるトピックについてレポートを書いた。全体として82のレポート (トークン数=9,974) を線形混合効果モデルで分析したところ、ライティング活動における統語的複雑性の一学期間中(15週)の発達を確認した。トピックの親しみやすさと難しさの影響は統計的には有意ではなかった。本稿は一学期中の第二言語ライティング発達パターンとライティング研究におけるトピックの影響について示唆する。

    本研究では、語彙処理の観点から母語と外国語における類推推論のメカニズムを検討することを目的とし、26名の参加者（英語母語話者10名、英語非母語話者16名）の実験データを分析した。参加者は英語で提示されたA:B::C:D形式の類推問題（例：dog:puppy::cat:???）を解いた。実験は二つの異なるセッションで構成され、セッション1ではプライミングなし条件、セッション2ではプライミングあり条件を実施した。プライミングあり条件では、問題文中の二つの単語が問題の前に一定時間提示された。分析の結果、正答率については母語話者（M = 0.84, SD = 0.11）と非母語話者（M = 0.81, SD = 0.12）の間に統計的な有意差は認められなかった。一方、正答試行の反応時間は母語話者の方が短く（M = 4667.65 ms, SD = 1374.58）、非母語話者はより長い時間を要し（M = 6901.37 ms, SD = 2220.20）、有意差が確認された。さらに線形混合効果モデルを使用した分析の結果、言語グループとプライム条件（プライミングあり／なし）の間に有意な交互作用が認められ、非母語話者の結果においてより大きなプライミング効果を示した。これらの結果は、外国語で類推問題を解く際、語彙処理に伴う認知的負荷のためにより長い処理時間を必要とすることを示唆している。また、問題中の単語を事前に提示することが、外国語での類推を促進するという結果が得られた。このことから、外国語における類推には語彙処理の役割を十分考慮することが重要であると考えられる。

  • 第二言語産出時におけるメタ言語意識プロセスの解明

    メタ言語意識とは, 第二言語(L2)産出時の誤りに学習者が主体的に気付き修正するための, L2産出能力向上に欠かせない高次の認知活動である。しかし第二言語習得研究においてメタ言語意識は, 言語産出に影響する一要因として扱われるにとどまっている。本研究では, L2比喩産出モデルの検証を通して, これまで明らかにされてこなかった L2メタ言語意識の発生条件と進行過程について, 文献調査を中心に検討した。まず, メタ言語意識が発生するかしないかについては, 当事者がメタ的思考が必要かを判断する「使用判断」という過程が重要だということが分かった（田中・楠見, 2007）。例えば, 日本語母語話者が 長い足 をL2（英語）で表現する場合 long leg が思い浮かび違和感は覚えない。それに対し, 大根足 には radish leg を思い浮かべることができても違和感を覚える。このような言葉への批判的気づきがメタ言語意識であり, その発生条件は違和感を覚えて考える行為があるかないかである。このように比喩直訳産出の際に発生すると考えられるメタ言語意識であるが, その発生条件には大きく分けて二つの要因があると考えられる (Wolter, 2023)。まず一つ目として, 言語要因がある。その一例として, 表現したい言葉がどの程度非字義的か(文字通りの意味でないか)という表現の比喩性がある。そして二つ目として, 個人要因にはL2学習者がL1とL2がどの程度異なると感じるかという心的言語距離がある。今後は田中・楠見(2007)の批判的思考の認知プロセスモデルを参考に, これらの要因がどのようにメタ言語意識の「使用判断」に影響するのかを心理実験的アプローチで検討していく。
