    Abstract

We prove several GCD inequalities inspired by Vojta’s deep conjecture in Diophantine geometry. These inequalities work with all algebraic numbers, so they can be thought of as attempts to extend GCD inequalities for S-units obtained by Corvaja and Zannier. Some of the inequalities we derive are weakened versions of inequalities obtained by Silverman under the assumption of Vojta’s conjecture. The upper bounds for the GCD’s in these inequalities all involve some contributions of heights and some contributions coming from the local heights outside S. The main ingredient of the proofs is the recent Diophantine approximation result of Ru and Vojta which is based on Schmidt subspace theorem and which involves a birational invariant coming from the asymptotic growth of the number of global sections of certain line bundles.

We prove Vojta's conjecture for some rational surfaces. Moreover, for similar but different rational surfaces, we show that their Vojta's conjecture is related to the abc conjecture. More specifically, we prove that Vojta's conjecture on these surfaces implies a special case of the abc conjecture, while the abc conjecture implies Vojta's conjecture on these surfaces. The argument carries over to the holomorphic case, so we unconditionally obtain Griffiths' conjecture for the same situation. To prove these results, we prove and use some properties of Farey sequences.

  • A large arboreal Galois representation for a cubic postcritically finite polynomial

We give a complete description of the arboreal Galois representation of a certain postcritically finite cubic polynomial over a large class of number fields and for a large class of basepoints. This is the first such example that is not conjugate to a power map, Chebyshev polynomial, or Lattès map. The associated Galois action on an infinite ternary rooted tree has Hausdorff dimension bounded strictly between that of the infinite wreath product of cyclic groups and that of the infinite wreath product of symmetric groups. We deduce a zero-density result for prime divisors in an orbit under this polynomial. We also obtain a zero-density result for the set of places of convergence of Newton’s method for a certain cubic polynomial, thus resolving the first nontrivial case of a conjecture of Faber and Voloch.

We give a generalization to higher dimensions of Silverman's result on finiteness of integer points in orbits. Assuming Vojta's conjecture, we prove a sufficient condition for morphisms on so that -integral points in each orbit are Zariski-non-dense. This condition is geometric, and for dimension 1 it corresponds precisely to Silverman's hypothesis that the second iterate of the map is not a polynomial. In fact, we will prove a more precise formulation comparing local heights outside to the global height. For hyperplanes, this amounts to comparing logarithmic sizes of the coordinates, generalizing Silverman's precise version in dimension 1. We also discuss a variant where we can conclude that integral points in orbits are finite, rather than just Zariski-non-dense. Further, we show unconditional results and examples, using Schmidt's subspace theorem and known cases of Lang-Vojta conjecture. We end with some extensions to the case of rational maps and to the case when the arithmetic of the orbit under one map is controlled by the geometric properties of another. We include many explicit examples to illustrate different behaviors of integral points in orbits in higher dimensions.

Let K be a number field and let S be a finite set of places of K which contains all the archimedean places. For any phi(z) is an element of K(z) of degree d >= 2 which is not a d-th power in (K) over bar (z), Siegel's theorem implies that the image set phi(K) contains only finitely many S-units. We conjecture that the number of such S-units is bounded by a function of vertical bar S vertical bar and d (independently of K, S and phi). We prove this conjecture for several classes of rational functions, and show that the full conjecture follows from the Bombieri-Lang conjecture.

We show that every exponential-polynomial set may be realized as the return set for an action of N-n on a power of the multiplicative group via algebraic endomorphisms with an algebraic variety as the target set. Here, by an exponential-polynomial set we mean a subset of N-m defined by finitely many equations of the form f(l(1),...,l(m); alpha(l1)(1),..., alpha(ln)(1),..., alpha(l1)(t),...alpha(lm)(t))=0 where f is a polynomial with integral coefficients and each alpha(j) is an algebraic integer. An action of N-n on G(m)(N) is given by a sequence of n commuting algebraic group endomorphisms psi(j) : G(m)(N)-> G(m)(N) via the rule (l(1),...,l(n))center dot a:=psi(degrees l1)(1) circle...circle psi(circle ln)(n) (a). Given such an action, a point a.is an element of G(m)(N)( C) and a subset Y subset of G(m)(N) (C), the return set is E(a, Y) := {(l(1),...,l(n)) := (l(1),...,l(n))is an element of N-n: (l(1),...,l(n))center dot a is an element of Y}. Our main theorem is that every exponential-polynomial set is a return set for Y the rational points on an algebraic variety. The converse that every such return set is polynomial-exponential is implicit in the work of Ghioca, Tucker, and Zieve. Our result shows that natural questions about algebraic dynamics are undecidable.

Using an inequality by Corvaja and Zannier about gcd's of polynomials in S-units, we verify Vojta's conjecture (with respect to integral points) for rational surfaces and triangular divisors. This amounts to a gcd inequality for integral points on G(m)(2). The argument in the proof is generalized to give conditions under which Vojta's conjecture on a variety implies Vojta's conjecture on its blowup.

We say that a rational map on P-n is a monomial map if it can be expressed in some coordinate system as [F-0 : ... : F-n] where each F-1 is a monomial. We consider arithmetic dynamics of monomial maps on P-2. In particular, as Silverman (1993) explored for rational maps on P-1, we determine when orbits contain only finitely many integral points. Our first result is that if some iterate of a monomial map on P2 is a polynomial, then the first such iterate is 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, or 12. We then completely determine all monomial maps whose orbits always contain just finitely many integral points. Our condition is based on the exponents in the monomials. In cases when there are finitely many integral points in all orbits, we also show that the sizes of the numerators and the denominators are comparable. The main ingredients of the proofs are linear algebra, such as Perron-Frobenius theorem. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Moreover, from Vojta's conjecture on one further blowup at an infinitely near point, we derive a still-open special case of the abc-conjecture.
