View Summary

With the recent rise of public interest in sexual and gender minority populations across societies, asking about sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) in social surveys has become increasingly important. However, most studies on the measurement of SOGI focus on North American and Western European countries. Therefore, it is currently difficult to evaluate whether the findings from these previous studies are applicable to countries with distinct legal, religious, and cultural contexts regarding sexual and gender minorities compared to Western societies. This paper focuses on Japan and summarizes the findings from focus group discussions and pilot surveys as well as the preliminary results of the Osaka City Residents’ Survey, which is one of the first population-based surveys that include SOGI questions in Japan. It also makes comparisons with previous studies in the United States, illustrating the significance of studying the measurement of SOGI outside of the United States.

• Understanding Sexual Orientation Identity, Sexual/Romantic Attraction, and Sexual Behavior beyond Western Societies: The Case of Japan

View Summary

As a growing amount of research examines the impact of sexuality on various demographic outcomes, it becomes important to understand the complex intersections of sexual orientation identity, sexual/romantic attraction, and sexual behavior. However, most previous studies use data from Western countries that have particular histories of sexuality, limiting the generalizability of the findings beyond Western societies. We describe dimensions of sexuality in Japan, where there has not been any religious authority condemning same-sex behavior and any law prohibiting same-sex relations except for a decade in the late 19th century. We use data from the “Survey on Diversity of Work and Life, and Coexistence among the Residents of Osaka City,” the first population-based survey with detailed questions about multiple aspects of sexuality in Japan, to conduct descriptive analysis. More women identify as bisexual or asexual than lesbian. Among the respondents who selected “Don’t want to decide, haven’t decided”—a category originally created for queer/questioning respondents—as their sexual orientation, the proportion of those who indicated exclusive heterosexuality is higher than expected, raising the possibility that some heterosexual respondents with no heterosexual identity may have mistakenly chosen this category. The data suggest that the population of heterosexual-identified men who have sex with men is small. The prevalence of the asexual population differs by whether sexual orientation identity or sexual/romantic attraction is used to capture this population. Our analysis extends the demography of sexuality by examining unique non-Western data and putting in context the previous findings observed in Western countries.

• The Role of Emotional Abuse in Intimate Partner Violence and Health Among Women in Yokohama, Japan

Mieko Yoshihama, Julie Horrocks, Saori Kamano

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PUBLIC HEALTH 99 ( 4 ) 647 - 653 2009.04 [Refereed]

View Summary

Objectives. As part of the World Health Organization's cross-national research effort, we investigated the relationship between various health indicators and the experience of intimate partner violence (IPV), which included emotional, physical, and sexual abuse, among women in Yokohama, Japan.
Methods. We used multivariate logistic and negative binomial regression to examine the relationship between health status and IPV in a stratified cluster sample of 1371 women aged 18 to 49 years.
Results. In 9 of 11 health indicators examined, the odds of experiencing health-related problems were significantly higher (P<.05) among those that reported emotional abuse plus physical or sexual violence than among those that reported no IPV, after we controlled for sociodemographic factors, childhood sexual abuse, and adulthood sexual violence perpetrated by someone other than an intimate partner. For most health indicators, there were no significant differences between those that reported emotional abuse only and those that reported emotional abuse plus physical or sexual violence.
Conclusions. The similarity of outcomes among those that reported emotional abuse only and those that reported emotional abuse plus physical or sexual violence suggests the need for increased training of health care providers about the effects of emotional abuse. • Housework and Lesbian Couples in Japan: Division, Negotiation and Interpretation

View Summary

Informed by research on the division of housework for (heterosexual) couples, especially those conducted in Japan, this study explores various aspects of the housework division of lesbian couples in Japan, using information from face-to-face interviews with 12 couples. The analysis shows variation, flexibility and prominence of negotiations in housework division among the couples. The women saw time availability, as well as preference for, sensitivity about and ability to undertake specific tasks as the factors affecting the division. The lack of reference to income difference in the women's interpretation of their housework division, their view of housework and housewifery, and the importance of choice and freedom in doing or not doing housework are also explored in the article. Finally, the connection between the value placed on housework on the one hand, and the significance of being a woman and being in a relationship with a woman on the other, is discussed. • Raising Questions about "the Conventional Family": An Exploration of Lesbigay Families

KAMANO Saori

KASYA 20 ( 1 ) 16 - 27 2008

View Summary

This paper explores how lesbigay families could raise questions in four aspects about "the conventional family," which assumes monogamous heterosexual relationships and blood ties as the bases and in which gendered division of labor is reproduced. First, lesbigay people's "chosen family" of friends/communities questions who is included in the family. Second, the negotiations surrounding disclosure question the assumption that one obtains emotional support from blood families and the primacy of blood ties. Third, lesbigay parenting creates a possibility of having more than two parents and questions the assumption that procreation necessarily involves heterosexual relationships. Last, non-gendered division of and flexibilities in work and family duties offer an alternative to the typical way of relating among heterosexual couples. The paper concludes by discussing the difficulty of determining whether lesbigay families indicate "assimilation" or "transgression," and suggests undertaking more detailed analyses that recognize the diversity of lesbigay families, and which pay attention to how particular configurations of lesbigay families could indicate both processes and which cultural, social and socio-economic contexts facilitate or inhibit these processes.

• Experiences of Intimate Partner Violence and Related Injuries among Women in Yokohama, Japan

Mieko Yoshihama, Julie Horrocks, Saori Kamano

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PUBLIC HEALTH 97 ( 2 ) 232 - 234 2007.07 [Refereed]

View Summary

We estimated rates of intimate partner violence and related injuries in a sample of 1371 women aged 18 to 49 years in Yokohama, Japan. By the age of 30 years, 14.3% of women who had ever had a partner had experienced violence from that partner, and 3.3% had suffered injuries related to such violence. By the time women had reached the age of 49 years, these percentages were 19% and 4%, respectively. In addition to the need for increased prevention efforts, our findings indicate the need for an expanded legal definition of intimate partner violence in Japan given that the current definition excludes premarital violence.

• Entering the Lesbian World in Japan: Debut Stories

Saori Kamano

Journal of Lesbian Studies 9 ( 1-2 ) 11 - 30 2005

View Summary

Conceiving of a "lesbian community" as the process and/ or the end product of a lesbian's going outside herself or her intimate relationship to connect with other lesbians, this paper explores the experiences of lesbians in entering the community in Tokyo, Japan, which lesbians refer to as "community debut." Based on the personal accounts gathered through interviewing 24 women in 2002 in the Tokyo area, this paper examines the personal contexts in which the women entered a lesbian community, which included searching for and defining themselves, accepting themselves, and acting out the new identity to make changes in their lives. Some of the women interviewed were prompted by a need to understand themselves as lesbians. Others with a lesbian identity searched for further affirmation through connecting with "the world of lesbians" beyond their immediate contexts. For some other women interviewed, entering the community was a way to help them start their lives anew by getting out of their previous (married) lives. The paper also specifically touches on the significance of the Internet as a source of information for individual women and as a way of creating a lesbian community, identifying both positive and negative aspects. Although the research reported in this paper leaves for further exploration how boundaries of the communities are negotiated and drawn, the norms of the communities, and conflicts and negotiations among individuals and groups, it has provided one piece of the mosaic of lesbian communities in Japan. The communities, while still largely invisible in the mainstream society, are nonetheless an important part of life, albeit in different ways, of many lesbians. The research process leads the author to anticipate greater visibility of lesbians and lesbian communities in Japan in the not too distant future. © 2005 by The Haworth Press, Inc. View Summary

The present study analyzes the effect of children on satisfaction in couple-relationship in Sweden, using the 1996 "Survey on Work and Economy in Swedish Family" data. The results of hierarchical multiple regression analyses show that the effect of children on relationship satisfaction is partially explained by the division of housework and assessment of household economy. However, the findings also show that people with children are less satisfied with their relationship compared to those without children even when other factors are being controlled for. Both women and men with youngest children aged 2 to 5 are found to have a lower level of relationship satisfaction, compared to those without children. Assessment of household economy and the division of housework have the strongest effects on relationship satisfaction for men and women respectively. Findings from studies in the United States are replicated in Sweden despite the latter's comprehensive state support for raising children.

• Comparing Individual Attitudes in Seven Countries

S Kamano

SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH 28 ( 1 ) 1 - 35 1999.03 [Refereed]

View Summary

Using the survey data on seven countries (France, the former West Germany, Great Britain, the United States, Japan, Italy, and the Netherlands), unidimensional scales of Traditionalism, Materialism, and Sense of Alienation were constructed. It was demonstrated that the effects of individual background variables such as sex, age, and educational level vary across countries and across attitudinal dimensions. Next, using Japan as a reference category, the effect of being in each of the other six countries on the three scales was tested. Finally, in order to explore what aspects of "country" that affect individuals' attitudes, the effects of macrocontext (the economic condition, religious environment, and polity type) were tested. It was found that the macro characteristics of a country is as significant as individual background variables in explaining individual attitudes. Further work in theoretical and empirical understanding of the mechanisms in which macro context affects individuals' attitudes is suggested. (C) 1999 Academic Press.

In this study, we conducted an all-inclusive survey on Japanese university policies (2020) and a random sampling survey of university faculty nationwide (2021). The results of the all-inclusive survey (27.0% response rate) of 773 national universities, public universities, private universities, and junior colleges showed that about half (50.5%) of the responding universities had received requests for consultation and response from sexual minority students, but only less than 10% (8.7%) had introduced guidelines.
In addition, the results of a nationwide survey of university faculty members (791 universities, 180,980 members) (38.8% response rate) showed that approximately 40% of university faculty members had encountered sexual minority (may be) students, and approximately 10% of faculty members indicated that they would feel uncomfortable if a sexual minority student was in their seminar they were in charge of.

This study explored empirically how, the societal environment and employment system in Sweden, the Netherlands and Germany foster the well-being of individuals and their families through keeping within the legal working hours and the ability to choose diverse and flexible lifestyle and work pattern, which thus render possible the practice of work family balance (WFB) at the individual level.
In these three countries, WFB related policies and systems go beyond the conventional “standard” family model and encompass diverse family types, including same-sex couples and lone-parent families. Our analyses showed that the common denominators among these countries include a high awareness of working people of their rights and the exercise of their capability in daily lives, the placing of children at the center of their life by working women and men with young children, and the prioritization of time with families as much as possible.

Despite the need for reliable information on sexual orientation and gender identity, there is a lack of knowledge based on quantitative data in Japan. This research developed questions to capture sexual orientation and gender identity (cisgender or transgender) through focus groups and other methods. Using a questionnaire that includes SOGI questions and questions on employment status, economic status, mental and physical health, suicidal ideation, attitudes toward gender, family, and SOGI-related policies, and experience of being bullied, a mail survey was administered to 15,000 randomly selected residents of Osaka City in 2019. 4,285 responses were collected, and results of analysis by SOGI comparison of educational attainment, income, and physical and mental health were presented in academic conferences and papers. The research indicated the significance of including SOGI in random sampling surveys.

This research conducted the 2018 Japanese General Social Survey which included the 2016 East Asian Social Survey family module, and created harmonized international data. Valid responses were 2660 in Japan, 1015 in Korean, 4132 in China, and 2024 in Taiwan.
The research examined changes in families by comparing the EASS 2016 data with the EASS 2006 data. With regards to financial support from children to parents, approximately 70% did not provide any support, and this number did not change over the ten years in Japan. While the proportion of those who provide no financial support to their parents increased to nearly 50% in Taiwan, frequent financial support to parents increased to around 30 % in Korea and China.
Combining the data with the Japanese General Social Survey cumulative data file since 2000, the research also explored the perceptions and behaviors on sustainable society, including the use of renewable energy, conservation of electricity, and pollution.

We conducted focus group discussions and interviews with adult heterosexual and non-heterosexual daughters, and mothers of such daughters in Hong Kong and Japan to explore how familial intimacy is practiced, and if gendered heterosexual norms are reproduced or challenged. Motherhood/wifehood is not revealed to be a basis of mother-daughter identification or intimacy;lesbian-identification, if accepted, could enhance intimacy. However, there are clear signs of the enforcement of heteronormativity. While the mother might be proud of the daughter's achievements, they do not offset her gender/sexual transgressions. Likewise, while a female partner could allay the mother’s worry about the daughter’s future, her status in the family is not equivalent to that of a sibling’s heterosexual spouse. Whether close or not, daughters show a strong sense of obligation towards the mother, especially among the less well-to-do, and the concept of 'care' is core to how they define intimacy.

To understand the changes in the processes of marriage formation and dissolution, we (1) described the trends and differentials across generations, spaces and socio-economic groups, (2) constructed and tested explanatory models, and (3) evaluated the outcomes of these changes. We employed both quantitative and qualitative approaches by analyzing micro data, and conducting in-depth interviews. We found that younger generations are less likely to get married and more likely to get divorced because of lack of the intimate relationships and economic bases. Following factors are partly responsible for our findings; unbalanced sex ratios in the local marriage market, decline in matchmaking social functions and conflicts between existing systems such as asymmetric gender systems and advanced socio-economic systems. However, we also found the newly emerging family patterns, i.e. highly educated or those living in urban areas have an advantage to form partnership in the latest period.

This study focuses on Japanese male global workers, mainly expatriates working for Japanese enterprises, who either have been living in Sweden, the Netherlands or Germany with their wives and children (Study 1) or had worked there but have come back to Japan (Study 2). During 2013 and 2015, we interviewed a total of 65 persons. The result from Study 1 shows that their perception and attitudes towards WFB have changed to a large extent. Though many of the interviewees have become more aware of WFB and even tried to make a better balance, they have difficulty practicing it at the workplace after coming back to Japan (Study 2).
It is essential to learn from policies and practices in the EU counties, such as a minimum daily rest period of 11 consecutive hours in every 24 hours, and their effects, and to start a new discourse on WFB that takes into account health and sustainability of future generations.

We compiled a database of survey questions used in quantitative family research in Japan. The database is organized by topics and includes a list of questions and response categories and details of the data collection method. From the database, we identified themes that can be analyzed using “integrative data analysis.” Such themes include the division of and time spent on housework and childcare; communication, companionship and decision-making between partners; relationship satisfaction; and ideas regarding families. In addition, we undertook an Internet survey (n=1271) in order to compare the response patterns when different response categories are used on the same question and when different questions are asked on the same phenomenon. We also conducted face-to-face interviews with 6 married couples on the survey questions in order to understand these response patterns.

The aim of this research project was to further develop queer studies in the Japanese context by looking at the intersection of sexuality, gender, class, race, ethnicity, region, and nationality. It was found that a number of studies on the Japanese legal system, social survey, and institutional design relevant to queer concerns have thus far been conducted without having a productive merger between their empirical research and theoretical investigations. It was therefore recognised that it is of utmost importance to make this project’s findings have critical dialogues with the concerns of diverseacademic disciplines as well as the general public.

This study explored the factors which affect fathers' childrearing and work life balance(WLB) in Japan in comparison to Sweden and other EU countries. Our macro-and micro-level analyses show two existing gaps in Japan with regard to WLB-gender gap and the gap between existing policies and actual practices. In order to increase people' s WLB-related capabilities, it is critical that, first of all, family policy in Japan on the whole become premised upon a family structure characterized by" dual earners/ dual caretakers" that guarantees all parents the right to both work and raise children. Secondly, it is important to establish a working environment in which employees could utilize policies aimed at establishing a balance between work and home lives. There is a pressing need for companies to make alternate staffing arrangements so that burdens on the other employees do not ensue when workers avail themselves of existing childcare support policies.

The specific questions were addressed as follows : (1) how family relationship are diversified? (2) what ideologies are hidden behind family welfare policies? (3) how family welfare policies and their ideologies affect family life and work?
The questionnaire was sent to married couples where husbands were born between 1938 * 1978, randomly selected from a listing of eligible people in each self-governing body in 4 cities in the Prefecture of Osaka. The subjects were 862 couples (862 wives, 862 husbands), living in nuclear family households.
The results of the study indicated following findings :
(1)Not only attitudes and values regarding family, but also actual conditions of family life were diversified according to husbands-wife and different forms of working.
(2)Comparison with the Swedish Survey indicated that husbands-wife relationships were very different between two countries. For instance, compared with Japanese men, men in Sweden were much more engaged in housework and strongly support the equality of men and women.
(3)Family welfare policies and their ideologies affected various aspects of individuals' and couples' lives.

Discover the courageous, vibrant similarities and differences of lesbians in East Asia. How are same-sex relationships similar or different in the cultures of East Asia? "Lesbians" in East Asia: Diversity, Identities, and Resistance is a unique examination of research and vital issues involving lesbians and lesbianism in East Asia, using perspectives by academics and activists who typically are rarely published in English. Contributing experts from Hong Kong, mainland China, Japan, and Korea discuss a variety of topics, including solidarity and conflicts between lesbians and feminists, identities and identity politics, lesbian lives and families, and representation in mainstream culture. Asia, because of its inherent language and cultural differences from Western society, is a location of a vast unrealized fount of knowledge about same-sex relationships and the societies in which they interact. "Lesbians" in East Asia: Diversity, Identities, and Resistance begins to fill this gap in knowledge, going beyond "East-West" divisions by gathering in one volume studies in Asia lesbian/queer studies of both the West and Asia. The text's emphasis is on points of connection and cooperation across the cultures within Asia and between this region and other areas of the world. Diverse viewpoints and research on lesbians in China, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Japan are presented showing issues and concerns that may be different-and often are very similar-to regions beyond those borders. Topics in "Lesbians" in East Asia: Diversity, Identities, and Resistance include: • lesbian rights and feminism in Korea • emotional damage suffered in family, work, and school contexts, including self-denial • analysis of Internet exchanges in China, highlighting those feeling that they should maintain a low profile and others showing disdain toward the lesbian lifestyle • gender inequality and discrimination and their effects on self-sufficiency • the effects of expectations of marriage or remaining single on economics, legal standpoints, and in school • ignorance and intolerance in Korean and Japanese societies • identity politics • conflicts of ideas between lesbians and feminists • and much more! "Lesbians" in East Asia: Diversity, Identities, and Resistance is important, illuminating reading for academics and students in women's studies, gender studies, queer/sexuality studies, East Asian studies, and activists in feminist movements. © 2006 by The Haworth Press, Inc.
