My research interests are mainly in modern Japanese literature and how Japanese society adopted the process of westernization. Recently, I am focused on exploring intellectual history from a bulletin published by a white-collar labor union after the occupation conducted by GHQ.

    In postwar period, although people were eager for reading publications, there were not enough publications. This was because the printing and publishing functions in metropolitan areas were lost in air raids, and papers supplies from oversea land were also lost.
    These local magazines have not been collected systematically and under tendency of dispersion. In this cooperative research, we conducted a comprehensive survey of these magazines by collecting old books and researching in the Prage Collection (known as documents of censorship which carried out in the occupation period) and in libraries of various regions. The result is “Dictionary of Local Magazines in the Occupation Period” which will publish in 2022.

    In the year of 2008, to define the representation of salaried men from popular culture, such as movies and magazine, this research is concentrated on collecting the articles about salaried men in journal Salaried Men (published in 1928). To abstract the collective sensibilities of salaried men in post war Japan, the novel Mr.Everyman's Elegant Way of Life (1962) by Hitomi Yamaguchi, is chosen and analyzed.     　本研究の遂行にあたり、今年度は以下の2点に重点を置いて調査を行った。①戦前の日本における植民地都市・大連に残る住宅建築および街区の調査　②雑誌「サラリーマン」（1928－1937）に掲載された記事の分析。以下、その概略と成果を記す。 ① 戦前の植民地都市を代表する大連は、日本の政治力が結集した国策会社・南満洲鉄道会社があったことから、社員に提供する住宅を多く建設した。またその生活様式は「モダン・ライフ」の典型とされ、恵まれたサラリーマン層の住まいとされる。その実状を調査するべく、今年度は大連出身者にして現在にも残る「アカシアの大連」というイメージを作り上げた詩人、清岡卓行の作品と、大連市内に残る旧満鉄社員住宅街との対応を試みた。その実践として、9月には4泊5日の調査にでかけ、多くの建築を写真データとして収集した。現在、大連には未曾有の建設ブームが訪れているため、かろうじて残存している戦前の建築も多くが近いうちに消滅することが予想される。国内において戦争の記憶の風化が言われて久しい昨今、植民地を有していた日本の近代化を多角的に調査することが望まれるだろう。 ②雑誌「サラリーマン」は、1920年代の日本資本主義成長期にあって、顕在化しつつあった都市勤労者を「サラリーマン」として可視化した特筆すべき雑誌である。雑誌記事の通読を経た結果、この雑誌の編集方針（経済記事、文化・風俗記事、ライトリーディングスとしての小説）は戦後の週刊誌ブームを牽引した「週刊新潮」（1956年創刊）との影響関係を指摘しうるのではないか、と考えている。このことを証明することにより、戦前のサラリーマンと戦後のサラリーマンにおける変容と連続を鮮明化することが可能となる。
