    In order to assure appearance quality of industrial products, inspection by human vision (visual inspection) is implemented in many manufacturing industries. In visual inspection, small visual defects such as cracks, scratches, dirt, nicks, stains, surface dents, and unevenness of the coating color are inspected. This study focuses on differences in defect shape on an inspection surface, and considers the relationship between defect shape and defect detection rate in visual inspection utilizing peripheral vision. Specifically, defect shapes, defect locations, and defect characteristics (luminance contrast between the defect and the inspection surface and size) are designed as experimental factors, and their effects on defect detection rate of twelve subjects are evaluated. As a result, it is obtained that the defect detection rate of line defect is lower than the other shapes (triangle, square, and circle) of defects regardless of luminance contrast between the defect and the inspection surface and size.

    This study focuses on adhered dirt such as dust on a product in production process, and considers the relationship between dirt levels of inspection surface and defect detection in visual inspection utilizing peripheral vision. Specifically, images of an inspection surface in an actual factory are analyzed using image analysis for modeling dirt. Moreover, dirt levels of inspection surface, defect locations, and defect characteristics (luminance contrast, size, and bright-dark defects) are designed as experimental factors, and their effect on defect detection rate is evaluated. As a result, it is clarified that the defect detection rate suddenly reduces as the inspection surface becomes dirtier. Consequently, the defects that can be detected easily becomes harder to detect, as the inspection surface is dirtier in visual inspection utilizing peripheral vision.

    In recent years, it is reported that a number of inspectors in the visual inspection process of industrial products utilized not only the central vision but also the peripheral vision. The visual inspection has been realized with both efficiency and accuracy. However, for the inspectors of many manufacturing industries to adopt this method, visual guidance is necessary for visual attention. Therefore, to obtain the fundamental knowledge for training of the visual inspection method, this study considers the effect of visual guidance on the defect detection performed by inspectors using visual indicators. Specifically, the presence or absence of visual guidance, defect location, and defect characteristics (luminance contrast between defect and inspection model and size) are designed as experimental factors. Further, the effect on inspection accuracy is evaluated with six subjects. As a result, it is clarified that the presence or absence of visual guidance does not affect the defect detection regardless of the defect location and defect characteristics. That is, the visual guidance is not an impediment to inspection accuracy
    it is suggested that the visual guidance is an effective tool for the education and training of the visual inspection method utilizing peripheral vision.

  • Proposal of Work Posture Evaluation Method Focusing on Assembly Height and Direction for a Large Product

    <p>In the production field, savings in labor and manpower are being achieved by means of automation and mechanization of processes. However, several operations still partly depend on manual work in assembly, inspection, and equipment maintenance processes. In particular, assembly operations for large products force workers to match their postures to the work positions of the products and equipment. Maintaining and repeating such awkward postures increases the workload and causes lower-back pain and upper-limb disorders. To evaluate work posture in the production field, methods based on observation by analysts are often used. Representative methods include OWAS, RULA, and REBA, all of which are readily available. However, results depend on the analyst's skill level and evaluation of the worker's posture is time-consuming. In this study, we propose a method for easily estimating posture during assembly work. An experiment was conducted to clarify the effects that assembly height and direction have upon work posture, and the evaluation value of the work posture was determined under each condition based on OWAS. Then, a table based on OWAS was constructed incorporating the height of the worker and height and direction of the assembly parts as inputs for estimating work posture. Furthermore, we verified the accuracy of this technique. The correlation coefficient between observation by an analyst and the proposed method was 0.77, and the estimation accuracy was 61.2%. This result indicates that the proposed method is valid.</p>

    <p>The appearance inspection process depends partly on manual work in which there are issues concerning detection accuracy and inspection efficiency. Tactile inspection, which is part of the appearance inspection, involves touching a target object with the palm of the hand to detect poor appearance, such as the distortion of product shape and unevenness of product surface. Such tactile inspection, involves repetitive motion and maintaining an awkward work posture for long periods of time, which may cause upper-limb disorders. Therefore, guidelines to reduce upper-limb load are required. However, few studies have evaluated that upper-limb load is related to tactile inspection quantitatively. This study targeted tactile inspection performed by workers. We focused on the factors affecting inspection accuracy to clarify the relationship between upper-limb load and inspection accuracy during tactile inspection. Ten healthy subjects participated in the experiment. Participants were asked to inspect an object with convex points at different heights. Evaluation involved two factors : one was the type-II error rate, which is the index of failure oversight, and the other was control force applied vertically to the object. The results showed that control force decreased when the wrist joint load increased, and inspection accuracy decreased with it. Furthermore, using the results of a previous study, an inspection condition considering both inspection accuracy and upper-limb load was derived. As a result, it was revealed that it is possible to reduce upper-limb load and improve inspection accuracy when the worker conducts inspections at chest height in front of the shoulder.</p>

    Visual inspection is one way to ensure product quality, and although automated visual inspection has been introduced, it is costly and associated with technical issues. Thus, human visual inspection still plays a major role in visual inspection in the industry. Many studies have focused on the visual fatigue of the inspectors. However, upper limb load caused by handling objects and maintaining a specific posture is also considered a problem in visual inspection. If the inspection object is lightweight but large in size (e.g., a plastic part), the inspectors tend to maintain an awkward posture due to difficulty in handling the object. Despite these findings, few studies have elucidated the effect of upper limb load. In this study, we intended to assess the effect of inspection side and object size on upper limb load. Ten healthy male subjects were instructed to inspect objects using a combination of six inspection side conditions (i.e., the sides of front with horizontal LED, top, under, front with vertical LED, right, and left) and two object size conditions (i.e., big: a square, 450 mm each side, and small: a square, 150 mm each side). Muscle activity and joint moment were the evaluation indices. We also investigated subjective indices for burden and task difficulty. Electromyography was performed on the subjects sternomastoid muscle, the upper part of the trapezius, the clavicular part of the pectoralis major, the middle part of the deltoid, the biceps brachii, the extensor carpi radialis, and the flexor carpi ulnaris muscle. The results showed that the muscle load of the upper limb is highest when the inspection side condition is under side. Additionally, if the object is big, the muscle load of the neck and upper limb is greater.

  • Development of RFID Positioning System using Neural Network Model

    In this paper, an overview of the RFID system which aims to measure position of RF tags covering wide area is presented. We propose a measuring method which uses relation between reaction strength from multi-antennas and RF tags' 2D coordinate. We put antennas at intervals of 1. 0 m to 2. 0 m to read RF tags by multiple antennas and specify RF tags' position by the reaction pattern. To increase the accuracy of measuring, we adapted neural network modeling and we tested various conditions to inspect the best model which minimize error of the measurement. Operation tests had been conducted at approximately 100 m(2) room with 11 antennas and dynamic objects and static objects were tested. As a result we confirmed that our RFID system can measure RFID tags within 0. 4 m error for dynamic objects and 0. 5 m for static objects.

    Development and innovations in manufacturing techniques have changed the nature of manufacturing activities from manual to automatic. However, tactile inspection has still not been automated. Tactile inspection requires upper limb work involving repetitively touching the surface of objects. It is important to clarify the factors influencing workload because repetitive upper limb work causes damage to the hands, arms and shoulders. Nevertheless, there are few studies about workload during tactile inspection. In this paper, we investigate the effect of object orientation and scanning direction on upper limb load during tactile inspection. Eleven healthy male subjects participated in this experiment. They were asked to inspect objects using a combination of six object orientations and two scanning directions. The six object orientations were the frontal plane, the sagittal plane, the horizontal plane, the middle orientation between the frontal and sagittal planes, the middle orientation between the sagittal and horizontal planes, and the middle orientation between the horizontal and frontal planes. The scanning directions were the horizontal and vertical directions. The upper limb activities were measured by performing electromyography. We also measured the control force using a load cell. Furthermore, subjective indices for burden, difficulty of the task and inspection were investigated. Electromyography was performed at the upper part of the trapezius muscle, at the clavicular part of the pectoralis major muscle, at the middle part of the deltoid muscle, at the biceps brachii muscle, at the triceps brachii muscle and at the extensor carpi ulnaris muscle. The results showed that tactile inspections in the frontal plane condition and in the middle orientation between the horizontal and frontal plane condition are undesirable because these conditions cause excessive load on the extensor carpi ulnaris muscle due to extension of the wrist. Furthermore, the load on the shoulder and elbow decreases in the horizontal plane condition and in the middle orientation between the horizontal and frontal plane condition, and increases in the sagittal plane condition.

    労働現場における作業による腰痛や肩こりなどの運動器障害の予防には、作業が身体に及ぼす影響の一つである身体負担の評価が必要である。しかし、その評価には高額な計測機器や高度な専門知識が必要である場合が多い。そこで本研究では、観察法(労働現場で利用される目視による姿勢評価法)に基づいて、人の判定を介さずに作業姿勢を自動で評価することを目的とした。具体的には、単眼RGBカメラで撮影された作業動画を入力として、姿勢推定AIにより関節座標を取得し、事前に作成した機械学習モデルによって姿勢評価を支援するという方法である。これを実現するために、被験者10名に対して観察法に基づいた作業姿勢をとらせる実験を実施し、モーションキャプチャシステムにより姿勢データ、8台の単眼RGBカメラにより作業動画を取得した。そして、作業動画を姿勢推定AIに入力することで関節座標を取得し、モーションキャプチャで取得した姿勢データにより各フレームの関節座標に対して観察法の評価スコアのラベル付けを実施した。さらに、ラベル付けしたデータセットを用いて、観察法の評価スコアを分類する機械学習モデルをSVC(Support Vector Classifier)により作成した。一人抜き交差検証の結果、観察法の評価スコアの分類精度は6割~9割程度となり、総合評価値の一致率は7割以上となった。
