    「ケア」は英米文学分野を中心に、学術界において近年注目が集まってきているテーマである。本研究では、19世紀英国を代表するリアリズム作家の一人であるエリザベス・ギャスケル（Elizabeth Gaskell, 1810-65）の遺作となった長編小説『妻たちと娘たち』（Wives and Daughters, 1864-66）のヒロイン、モリー・ギブスン（Molly Gibson）のケアを焦点に当て、モリーの成長について検証している。本年度は一次資料である小説の講読を行った。その結果、モリーはレイディ・ハリエット・カムナー（Lady Harriet Cumnor）をはじめとする複数の登場人物との関わりにおいてケアの実践を示していた。また、モリーの父親で医師のミスター・ギブソン（Mr Gibson）も、高い道徳的水準を持つ人物として描かれていることが講読を通じて明らかとなった。早くに母親を亡くし、父親と二人で生活していたモリーに対する父親の影響は大きいため、今後本研究を遂行するにあたり、ミスター・ギブスンの医師としての医療行為だけではなく、ケア行為についても検討していくことが議論の発展につながるのではないかと思われる。一次資料の読解・講読以外には、「ケアの倫理」の提唱者として有名なキャロル・ギリガン（Carol Gilligan, 1937-）の著書『もうひとつの声で』（In A Different Voice, 1982）をはじめとする、ケアの倫理や実践、文学におけるケアに関する文献の収集を進めた。

    本研究では、英国ヴィクトリア朝小説における身体障害をもつ登場人物に焦点を当て、その表象の特徴について文学批評理論や障害学、歴史学の知見を援用しながら検討した。エリザベス・ギャスケル『ルース』（1853）のサースタン・ベンスンと、ジョージ・エリオット『フロス河畔の水車場』（1860）のフィリップ・ウェイケムは、背中に障害がある中産階級男性である。障害の種類と階級、性別に共通点のある2人を研究対象とし、彼らの作品内での役割や障害を持たない周囲の人々との関わりについて検証した。その結果、両作品とも障害者を社会的弱者として描いている点では共通しているが、障害者に対する社会的問題の克服を小説内に描くかという点について違いがみられた。
