    本研究では、英国ヴィクトリア朝小説における身体障害をもつ登場人物に焦点を当て、その表象の特徴について文学批評理論や障害学、歴史学の知見を援用しながら検討した。エリザベス・ギャスケル『ルース』(1853)のサースタン・ベンスンと、ジョージ・エリオット『フロス河畔の水車場』(1860)のフィリップ・ウェイケムは、背中に障害がある中産階級男性である。障害の種類と階級、性別に共通点のある2人を研究対象とし、彼らの作品内での役割や障害を持たない周囲の人々との関わりについて検証した。その結果、両作品とも障害者を社会的弱者として描いている点では共通しているが、障害者に対する社会的問題の克服を小説内に描くかという点について違いがみられた。
