中世・ルネサンス期の聖母晩年伝図像の研究を行っています。対象とする地域はイタリアを中心に、広くキリスト教圏を横断する地域としています。最近は近世以降の聖母被昇天図像のアジアや南米地域への普及と受容の問題にも関心を寄せて研究しています。サブ研究テーマは洞窟聖所研究です。

    聖母晩年伝とはキリストの母、聖母マリアの地上での最後の日々から天上での栄光化までの一連の画題群を指す。この画題群は地中海圏の重要な聖堂を飾ってきたものである。本研究では14世紀イタリア半島で描かれた聖母晩年伝作例のうち、シエナの《マエスタ》に着目し、６場面（「聖母への死の告知」、「使徒たちの到着」、「いとまごい」、「聖母のお眠り（死）」、「聖母の葬送」、「聖母の埋葬」）から構成される聖母晩年伝について、各場面のモチーフや人物の身振りを観察の上、それらと内容の対応する偽書を探り当てた。《マエスタ》の聖母晩年伝は、当時流布していたヤコブス・デ・ウォラギネによる『黄金伝説』（1263ー98年）をもとに描かれたと考えられてきたが、本研究により、『黄金伝説』と、その下敷きとなった偽書の双方を混ぜ合わせて描かれたことが明らかとなった。その成果は大きく２点に集約される。まずは、シエナ大聖堂の主祭壇を飾っていた《マエスタ》について、その聖母晩年伝パネルの典拠を正確に特定したことである。そして『黄金伝説』を詳細に検討することで、『黄金伝説』の聖母被昇天譚が、複数の偽書を下敷きとして、変更を加えつつ、その部分部分を継ぎ接ぎして編まれたことを明らかにしたことである。1点目に関しては、《マエスタ》がシエナのコンタード（周辺農村部）の小都市にまで、美術における造形や図像の点で影響を及ぼしたことに鑑みると、その典拠を特定したことはシエナとその周辺地域の美術の理解に裨益する成果であると期待される。2点目に関しては、2024年1月に都立大学の大貫俊夫教授の率いるReMo研（科学研究費学術変革領域研究（B)「中近世における宗教運動とメディア・世界認識・社会統合：歴史研究の総合的アプローチ」に基づく研究会）合同研究会にて、本研究で取り組んだ『黄金伝説』の構成について一部発表したところ、成果が評価された。またこの成果は2023年12月に刊行された単著『聖母の晩年ーー中世・ルネサンス期イタリアにおける図像の系譜』の第4章第１節に反映されている。

    2022年7月ー9月、2023年1月ー3月にかけてイタリアに出張し、聖母晩年伝作例の実地調査を行うと同時に、単著の原稿執筆を行った。夏の出張ではシチリアのパレルモを中心に、ビザンツの影響の強い聖母晩年伝作例の調査を行った。また単著の原稿執筆のためフィレンツェのマックス・プランク美術史研究所（KHI Florenz）とオランダ大学機関美術史研究所(NIKI Florence)にて資料収集を行った。
