    The Digital Orientalist is a multidisciplinary and international online magazine that publishes short articles on using information technologies and digital humanities methods in Oriental Studies disciplines. It consists of the articles on a variety of topics written by scholars, students and librarians from different countries. These topics include but not limited to Islamic Studies, Japanese and East Asian Studies, Archaeology, Information Science, Digital Cartography, African Studies and Indian Studies. This article aims to explain the Digital Orientalist’s raison d’être as well as the way it uses the term “Orientalist”. It highlights the importance of the new technologies and digital humanities in research and teaching of Oriental Studies.

  • A New Analysis of Persian Visits to Japan in the 7th and 8th Centuries

    This research note describes the biographies of Dārāy and Ri Mitsuei, two Persians whose visits to Japan in the 7th and 8th Centuries are recorded in the Nihon Shoki and Shoku Nihongi. The research note outlines and critically engages with contemporary research, and seeks to suggest that much of the current knowledge regarding the biographies of the two figures is unsubstantiated. Furthermore, the research note seeks to provide new starting points for the analysis of the two figures. Whilst it argues that little can be known about the figure of Dārāy, the research note seeks to interact and add to debates regarding his name, nationality, rank, and the roles of other people who are often mentioned alongside him in scholarly works. Turning to Ri Mitsuei, the research note adds to previous research undertaken by the author revising some of the conclusions that he drew elsewhere.

    This article explores Christian–Muslim relations in East Asia during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries through a description of the lives and journeys of three Roman Catholics – Petro Kasui Kibe (Jesuit), Nicholas the Iruman (Augustinian), and Bento de Góis (Jesuit) – to predominantly Muslim lands. Their journeys display the different ways in which Christian–Muslim relations and communication were viewed at that time, and the varying levels of impact that inter-religious dialogue had. Kibe appears to have placed little importance on Christian–Muslim relations and his journey to Jerusalem remains little more than an interesting historical footnote. Nicholas played a background role in the tale of his superiors and travel partners who helped to establish European–Persian relations. And de Góis, through his journey and interactions with Muslims, was able to contribute to a paradigmal shift in European geographical knowledge that changed contemporary understandings of East Asia.     Building on entries written for Christian–Muslim Relations: A Bibliographic History, this article explores Christian–Muslim relations in China and Japan in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The first half of the article considers Christian–Muslim relations amongst the Japanese in and outside Japan. Direct, indirect and potential interactions and contemporaneous commentaries are explored in order to build a picture of the sort of Christian–Muslim interactions that took place. However, due to the sparsity of sources, this section seeks more to develop and open potential avenues of enquiry than to provide definitive answers. The second section focuses on Christian–Muslim interactions in the work of Matteo Ricci and suggests that Christian–Muslim interactions in East Asia generally, and in China more specifically, were significant not only to the Jesuit mission itself, but also to the shaping of European knowledge of the East.

    The history of the church of the East in East Asia is one in which it is often difficult to divide fact and fiction. This is the result of an over-reliance on late 19th- and early 20th-century Orientalist scholarship, which sought to show the all-encompassing influence of Christianity in global history, and is often repeated in modern works without critical attention. In this article, I explore claims that Christianity arrived in Korea and Japan prior to the 9th century. I offer a critical assessment of these claims in order to suggest that they do not have an historical basis. Similarly, I seek to question what evidence we have to suggest that Christianity was present in pre- Táng dynasty China. I seek to illustrate that reliance on early scholarship has resulted in a number of fictional claims, which either cannot be maintained or require more research. The article seeks to act as a starting point for greater criticism of a number of assumptions made by scholars of early East Asian Christianity, historians and missiologists alike.

  • The Figures of Kōho and Li-mi-i, and the origins of the case for a Christian missionary presence in Tenpyō Era Japan

    In 1916 P.Y. Saeki devoted a page of his book “The Nestorian Monument in China,” to a short thought experiment which linked a Persian by the name of Li-mi-i 李密翳 who was present in Emperor Shōmu's 聖武天皇 court and whose arrival was mentioned in the Shoku Nihongi 続日本紀 with a priest named on the Nestorian Stele. Since that first suggestion, several scholars have expounded the idea that Li-mi-i and another figure who arrived alongside him, Kōho Tōchō 皇甫東朝, were Christians and/or missionaries. In this paper I assess these claims, returning to the Shoku Nihongi in order to suggest that there is a lack of data to establish them as true. I then seek to explore the origins of this theory situating it within the joint context of Japan's imperial expansion and her modernization. Whilst the latter cannot be conclusive, I hope that it may shed light on the significance of the theory which can be seen as a search to discover Japanese history, a statement of the equality between Japanese and Western histories, or an attempt to justify imperial aims in China academically.

    This paper explores Christian-Muslim relations in Meiji Period (1868-1912) Japan by focusing on the descriptions and evaluations of Muslims and Islam by contemporary Christian writers. Meiji period Christian thought vis-a-vis Muslims and Islam was influenced by European scholarship, which had come to view Mohammad as a great historical figure and Islam as a potential ally to Christianity. Nevertheless, Christian reflections on Islam in Meiji Japan were also influenced by Japanese understandings that both the Japanese and Muslims (Turks, Arabs etc.) were linked by their Asianness. The paper explores the roles that these influences had on Christian-Muslim relations as seen in the work of Kanzō Uchimura, Gorō Takahashi, and Zanka Togawa amongst others.

    The research project explores Christian-Muslim Relations in Japan and China from 1549-1912. It investigates and analyzes texts written by Christians and Muslims about their interactions with each other within the Chinese and Japanese contexts. The project seeks to illustrate that the interactions and dialogue between Christians and Muslims in East Asia were historically of global significance. During the first year of the project, the researcher published and prepared several book chapters on Christian-Muslim Relations in Meiji period Japan, and presented on Christian-Muslim Relations in Japan and China at some academic conferences.

    The grant for the project titled “AumShinrikyō and the Development of Religious Surveillance in Japan: 1995-2001”was used to progress my research on the surveillance of Aum Shinrikyō. During academicyear 2022, I made one presentation about my on the topic and made progress onthe draft of a related monograph.
