    Abstract

    Inspired by Hult’s (2010. Theme-based research in the transdisciplinary field of educational linguistics. In Francis M. Hult (ed.), Directions and prospects for educational linguistics, 19–32. Springer) discussion of theme-based research within educational linguistics that focuses, first and foremost, on solving problems rather than adhering to disciplinary boundaries and conventions, this article calls for transdisciplinary collaboration to resolve educational problems related to monolingualism, native-speakerism, and the hegemony of colonial ideologies. More specifically, we make a case for transdisciplinary dialogue between English as a lingua franca (ELF) and translingualism. We argue that these two research fields, with their increasingly converging interests and goals as well as distinct strengths, can make a greater impact in addressing persistent educational problems through targeted collaboration, research, and (language) pedagogy based on equitable multilingualism (e.g., Ortega, Lourdes. 2019. SLA and the study of equitable multilingualism. The Modern Language Journal 103. 23–38). In this conceptual paper, we first introduce translingualism and ELF as equally legitimate multilingual theories. Next, we identify shared key tenets and orientations as well as distinctive vantage points of each approach that researchers and educators can take advantage of for collaboratively addressing problems within classrooms and beyond. Finally, we lay out a vision for how this transdisciplinary, collaborative dialogue can help realize more equitable multilingualism.

  • Cooperative Accomplishment of Multilingual Language Tutorial: An Intercultural Pragmatics Study

    Using conversation analytic methods and concepts, this article examines a language tutorial among Thai and Japanese college students, focusing on the use of multilingual repertoires for organizing this activity. The study responds to a call for dialogic studies of multilingual interactions. A 79-minute video-recorded session was analyzed for the coordinated use of multilingual and multimodal resources as well as the role of sequential routines in the cooperative pursuit of relevant interactional projects. Findings demonstrate the contingent and variable nature of cooperative behaviors that are shaped not simply by a priori goals, but emergent interactional projects. They also exemplify reciprocal language learning wherein the participants alternate between expert and novice roles with respect to Thai and Japanese. The article concludes with the implications of the study for language learning and teaching in the context of globalization.

    2021年度は、調査事例として予定していた国フェス(日本のタイフェスティバルおよびタイの日本博など)が新型コロナウイルス感染症対策のため、首都圏を中心に延期や中止となった。徐々に再開の兆しが見られるものの、移動制限や感染リスクを考慮した際、実地調査は困難な状況が続いている。
    そこで、2021年度は過去の催事のアーカイブを通読し、現在にいたる沿革や開催の経緯を整理した。特に公式HPに注目し、タイフェスティバル東京と日本博inバンコクの登壇者の紹介文のコーパスおよび非言語のシンボルの比較を行った。両催事は互いに似通った枠組みを備えているが、それぞれが基底にもつディスコースは催事が開催されることになった当初の目的と国家イメージに関連していることが見出された。その知見の一部は社会言語学の国際学会(Sociolinguistic Symposium)で発表し、参加者からのフィードバックを得た。
    さらに、デジタルエスノグラフィの手法を取り入れながら、オンラインのタイフェスティバルの観察を実施した。デジタル場での言語選択、言語と非言語の記号の関連、相互作用の分析に取り組んでいるところである。オンラインフェスティバルは対面でのフェスティバルの再開を視野に入れつつデジタルならではの試みを取り入れている。そうした経験が今後の対面フェスティバルをどう変えていくかはひき続き注目していくべき点である。
    また、実地調査の開始に備え、具体的な研究計画書を作成した上で人を対象とする研究倫理委員会の審査を受け、研究実施許可を得た。タイフェスティバルに限定せず、ラオスフェスティバル(オンライン)や日韓交流おまつり(オンライン)、ベトナムフェスティバル(実地)で参与観察やパフォーミングアーティストへのヒアリング等の調査を実施した。知見の一部は国内学会と国際学会で発表した。
    関連する文献の精読に断続的に取り組んでいる。

    This longitudinal research investigated motivation, social networks, and language use of Japanese exchange students in Thailand whose primary objective for study abroad was to improve their English skills. Considering the recent trends in study abroad research, it focused on the particularities of individual learners, with the goal of contributing our understanding of language learning in the ever-diversifying world. The findings of this research were disseminated widely at academic conferences and in journal articles.

  • 英語を軸とした多言語能力の涵養に向けて: 学習者の自由会話の通時的研究

    国境を超えて知的・文化的交流が盛んに行われるグローバル化に伴い英語第二言語話者同士の交流が盛んに行われる現代において、応用言語学では「英語を軸とした多言語コミュニケーション」の視座が重要視されるようになった。このような社会・学術的文脈を受け、本課題(2022C-388)及び連動する科研費採択事業(21K13051)では日本人学生と外国人学生の交流の場(自由会話)において両者の多言語コミュニケーション能力がいかに醸成されるのかを調査している。2022年度は主にデータ収集に注力し、約5時間のコミュニケーションの録画データ及びの収集と予備的分析を実施した。また、参加者の主観的な経験について掘り下げるため、言語学習歴と異文化コミュニケーションへの認識についてのインタビューと stimulated recall sessions (録画した映像を見ながら特定の場面での言語使用について意見を求めるデータ収集手法)も実施した。
