In postwar period, although people were eager for reading publications, there were not enough publications. This was because the printing and publishing functions in metropolitan areas were lost in air raids, and papers supplies from oversea land were also lost.
These local magazines have not been collected systematically and under tendency of dispersion. In this cooperative research, we conducted a comprehensive survey of these magazines by collecting old books and researching in the Prage Collection (known as documents of censorship which carried out in the occupation period) and in libraries of various regions. The result is “Dictionary of Local Magazines in the Occupation Period” which will publish in 2022.

While integrating my research about the circle movements in the wartime and postwar Japan, I investigated about the activitiies of the popular art movements in overseas territories of Japan and the Internment Camps in the US and analyzed how both movements could be related each other. Regarding the latter movements, I made inverstigations a journal Heart Mountain Bungei published by the Japanese American people at the Heart Mountain Relocation Center and another journal Tsuruoka published by the Japanese internees in the coal pit area of the district in northeastern China. By these investigations, the popular art movements crossing between the war-time and the after-war period can be repalced and estimated historically.

“East Asia” and Japan share a long history and a wide range of integrated culture. However, Imperial Japan and its wars transformed and complicated this relationship, causing further entanglements and overlaps. In many ways, defeated Japan has not taken adequate responsibility for the war it waged, nor for its colonial rule, and frequent disputes over Japan's imperial legacy add to these tensions. Focusing on those who crossed borders of East Asia and their creative activities; writings, paintings, films, and so forth, this research shed light on the relationships emanating from mobilities.

The aim of the Project was twofold. First to question how Globalization Studies can respond and react to the issues addressed in Gender Studies? Second, to try and discover new issues that arise from a dynamic combination of Gender and Globalization Studies. As a method for combining these two disciplines of research the Project chose to focus on the movement and migration of women. Examining the issues involved through the lens of the movement and migration of women-in contrast to a focus on permanent residence in a single State or the idea of a fixed sense of "home"-the limits to State-bound modern knowledge and knowledge-making can be exposed. The Project begun by critically re-examining the methodology of Migration Studies to date and this task culminated in a Symposium, jointly held with the National Museum of Ethnology, entitled "Motion in Place/Place in Motion". The aim of this Symposium was to re-conceptualize the notion of Place-often thought to be fixed and rigid-through that of Motion. Using this re-examination of Migration Studies, the Project further attempted to theoretically clarify the gendering of migration and through creating a new conversation between the Social Sciences and Humanities, explored the issues raised by Gender and Globalization Studies. The Project carried out a Workshop entitled 'Women, Movement Narration", and the issues raised and developed in this Workshop were then presented at both the Australian National University(Canberra, Australia)and Cornell University (USA). Through this Workshop participants were once again made aware that (1), Globalization Studies have entered a new phase, (2), that there is now greater need for studies of female migrants and migration based upon the insights of Gender Studies, and (3), of the necessity of further dialogue between Globalization and Gender Studie

Using Shukan Shokokumin (Weekly National Youth), which was published during the Pacific war until its end, as my text I examined the wartime visual culture of pictures and graphic materials. I examined how these visual materials and the literary representations carried out by authors merged together in some ways, but in other ways could become mutually quite distinct. Also comparing Shonen kurabu (Youth Club), Shokokumin bunka (National Youth Culture) and other youth magazines as well as young women's magazines and visually-oriented magazines aimed at adults such as Asahi Graph, I considerd the meaning of visually-oriented magazines aimed at children during the war. Without just ending my analysis with the conclusion that these materials were simply propaganda, I considerd the relationship between child reader's reactions to these serials and tie-in media events beyond just print culture, including local and school events.

    2023

     View Summary
