The importance of pronunciation has been raised again in Japanese language education, but many teachers believe that only "professionals in pronunciation education" can teach pronunciation. In order to clarify teachers' views on pronunciation education and the actual teaching situation, this study conducted a questionnaire survey of 100 Chinese Japanese language teachers at 37 universities in China. In this presentation, we compare the responses of teachers who provide systematic pronunciation instruction (G1) and teachers who provide non-systematic pronunciation instruction (G2), analyze the differences between the two, and consider factors related to teachers' perceptions of the systematicity of pronunciation instruction.

     View Summary

Though previous studies conducted several questionnaire surveys on how teachers instruct on Japanese pronunciation, due to the lack of a common model, it’s difficult to compare their results to grasp the big picture. In this study, we reviewed relative literature and proposed a Belief-Experience-Opinion model for such surveys. By using this model as a guidance, we conducted a questionnaire survey, in which participated 100 teachers from 37 universities across China. These teachers were divided into two groups: G1 had practiced systematic pronunciation instruction for at least one semester (47.47%), and G2 had practiced unsystematic instruction (52.53%). Both groups instructed mainly in freshman year, while G2 mainly in comprehensive classes and G1 in various classes such as pronunciation, conversation, listening, speech contest, etc. Among different aspects of pronunciation, Japanese accent was the most instructed by both groups. G1 instructed more on intonation than G2, but both groups instructed little on pause and prominence. As for teaching methods, audio aids (e.g., modeling and CDs) were preferred by both groups, compared to visual (e.g., symbols and marks) and movement (e.g., gestures) aids. Many teachers (56.57%) shared their ways of using student’s L1 or L1 dialect in teaching L2 Japanese pronunciation. They focused on consonants [16 ideas, the same hereinafter], vowels [5], segments [6], rhythm [2], accent [2], and intonation [2]. These ideas could be categorized into five types, according to the TP-SD framework from Liu (2023). a) Explaining reason for errors [8]. b) Explaining important points [8]. c) Explaining manner or place of articulation [5]. d) Pre-practicing by using L1 sounds [2]. e) Applying method of pronunciation from L1 to L2 [7]. Besides, 7 ideas of using cross-linguistic similarities and another 7 of using both similarities and dissimilarities were mentioned, but these are holistic concepts rather than specific ways of L1 use.

In this study, we designed a questionnaire based on a model of belief-experience-opinion, and investigated Chinese teachers of Japanese language working in universities across China about their beliefs about speech education and their teaching practices. 52 teachers from 27 universities answered the questionnaire. They were divided into two groups: G1 had practiced systematic pronunciation instruction for at least one semester, and G2 had practiced non-systematic pronunciation instruction for less than one semester. By analyzing their answers, we came to five conclusions (ref. Proceedings).

How do other teachers and educational institutions teach pronunciation, and what are their views on pronunciation instruction? As practitioners and researchers of speech education, we would like to know in order to improve our daily educational activities. In this presentation, I will explain the BEO model (Belief, Experience, Opinion model) constructed from a meta-analysis of previous research. I will also introduce a method for investigating the current state of pronunciation instruction and teachers' views on pronunciation instruction using this model. I will then invite participants to reflect on their pronunciation instruction and exchange opinions with other audience.

In this presentation, using data from a five-year survey of language use at the Japanese Language Classroom of the University of Tokyo's Graduate School of Engineering, we analyzed the needs of international students in engineering for Japanese language education. We mainly presented four points: 1) The difference in the level of Japanese language required by supervisors and pursued by the students themselves, 2) language use sorted by target audience, 3) language use sorted by situation, and 4) categorization of situations on campus where insufficient Japanese language proficiency becomes a problem. We then pointed out that problems with the Japanese language can lead to emotional and practical problems, which can ultimately hinder the self-realization of international students in engineering, and raised the question of what can be done with specialized Japanese language education in engineering.

    2023

     View Summary
