  • Experimental investigation of buckling collapse of encased liners subjected to external water pressure

    This report presents the experimental results of a comprehensive investigation on the budding of an encased liner under external water pressure. The pre- and post-buckling behaviours of tightly and loosely fitted liners, as well as their collapse mechanism, were investigated by performing a series of experiments using novel pressurizing equipment. The experimental results clearly show that an encased liner can collapse due to inelastic single-lobe buckling or elastic buckling, depending on the liner and constraint conditions. In addition, the existing related solutions are discussed, and it is identified that none of the solutions can appropriately evaluate the critical pressure for both tightly and loosely fitted liners. Moreover, recent buckling accidents are discussed, and suggestions for safe design are presented. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

  • EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON THE BUCKLING OF INTERNAL LINER INSTALLED IN COMPOSITE PIPELINE

     Water delivery pipelines are usually constructed into a composite structure through installing steel or plastic liners into a finished tunnel and filling the annular space with cementirics material, for improving its hydraulic performance, prevention of water leakage and protection of the lining. However, many recent failure accidents of pipelines indicate that the buckling failure of the internal liners is still an important structural concern. In this study, fifteen specimens of composite pipes are tested under water pressure with the aim to clarify the buckling mechanism and improve the current design method. The experimental results clarified the acting condition of water pressure, the effects of filling material and construction faults on the buckling critical pressure, and the buckling mechanism. Based on the experimental results, the problems in the existing buckling design were discussed and an improved design method was proposed.

  • Numerical analysis of DRC segment under inner water pressure based on full-scale test verification for shield tunnel

    Shield tunnel subjected to high inner water pressure is used to prevent waterlogging, and DRC (Ductile cast iron segment and Reinforced Concrete) segment has been developed for obtaining high loading capacity in the linings of underground drain shield tunnel. In general, tunnel linings resist bending moment, hoop and shear forces. Cracks will occur in tunnel linings under high inner water pressure during operating period, while tensile stress will appear at member section. On the basis of the existing experimental results, the crack pattern, relative slip, contact stress, strain distribution, and relationship between deflection and load of DRC segment were investigated by finite element method. A three-dimensional finite element model of DRC segment was proposed to simulate its nonlinear behaviors by applying MSC.Marc software package. Taking the three sources of nonlinearity into account, the proposed numerical model fully presented the complicated behaviors of DRC segment during the whole loading process. Results indicated that the numerical studies agreed well with the experimental tests, and comparisons between them demonstrated that the proposed numerical model could excellently analyze the nonlinear behaviors of DRC segment under combined hoop and bending loads.   • Theoretical and numerical analyses of hydrostatic buckling of a noncircular composite liner with arched invert

    This study considered the hydrostatic budding failure of a noncircular composite liner with an arched invert installed in the sewer pipe. An equation was derived for the buckling of the invert liner, and its application procedure was proposed. A finite-element method was successfully employed for nonlinear and contact analyses of the buckling behaviour and the physical contact phenomena of different sewer culverts. Generally, the composite liner fails in a single-lobe budding at the invert with the deflection similar to that observed onsite.   • A framework for maintenance of shield tunnels with secondary linings using strength and life-cycle cost as indicators

    Many shield tunnels have been constructed during the urban development of past decades, serving as important municipal infrastructures, such as for roads, railways, water supplies and sewers, etc. However, continued good performance of such urban utilities requires appropriate maintenance of the tunnel structure, especially when used beyond the designed working life. On the other hand, maintenance of extensive social infrastructure demands a substantial budget, so a rational stock management method is adopted by agencies and authorities. Although preventive maintenance has been realized in the most efficient and effective manner, based on the criteria for the life-cycle cost and performance of such structures, there is still some argument about the superiority of corrective and preventive maintenance, and predictive maintenance. In any event, how life-cycle performance should be predicted and evaluated must still be studied, as well as the selection of the most appropriate countermeasures for maintenance. This paper examines shield tunnels with secondary linings, and proposes a maintenance framework based on performance-based design. Strength is used as an indicator of structural performance, considering their features of having a secondary lining and being infrastructure utilities. A successful application of the framework to trunk sewer pipe is also presented. The sewage tunnel strengths under the designed static and seismic events were evaluated using numerical analysis, and the corresponding life-cycle costs were estimated for three assumed cases of steel corrosion and countermeasures. The rational countermeasures was then more easily selected by determining the minimum life-cycle cost per unit strength for a designed period.

  • Buckling of encased liner under external pressure and the effects of voids in backfilling grout

    A common phenomenon in trenchless technology is the occurrence of voids in grouting. We investigate the impact of such voids on buckling of an encased liner under external pressure using a numerical solution of the nonlinear contact analysis method. The buckling behavior is clarified and the critical pressure is tested theoretically. An encased liner always fails in single-lobe buckling if there are no voids. Voids greatly change the behavior of the encased liner; as the void size increases, the buckling mode may switch from single-lobe buckling to free buckling of an arch even at an infinitely long pipe, and the buckling strength decreases sharply in stages.

    In case of the underground flood way constructing by Shield driven Tunnelling Method with RC segment, the watertightness of the RC segment against inner water pressure had not been studied well, regarding the validity of the conventional crack width calculation formula and the relationship between the crack width and the leak water. In this paper, new formula is proposed and the relationship is exhibited by means of full-size RC-segment loading tests and leak water tests. As a result, the maximum interval of the cracks should be used the interval of the assembly steel bars, and the crack width of about 0.1mm is not leakable in long term, are shown.

  • Buckling of cylindrical shells with longitudinal joints under external pressure

    In this article, the bucking of cylindrical shells with longitudinal joint has been investigated through the experimental and numerical analysis. It was clarified that the buckling behavior of cylindrical shells with longitudinal joints under lateral external pressure is not only related to its dimension, but also longitudinal joint and an imperfection. The buckling of cylindrical shells with rigid joint buckles only once and in multi-lobe buckling, whereas one with flexible joints buckles twice and firstly in single-lobe buckling in the vicinity of the joint, secondly in multi-lobe buckling in remaining un-deformed area. And the more flexible the longitudinal joint, the lower the critical pressure, with respect to the same dimension of jointed cylindrical shells and imperfection condition. Moreover the numerical analysis approaches were also presented and verified, by which the imperfection can greatly enlarge the effect of joint on buckling has been demonstrated.     The underground in the city part is congested with various infrastructures now. Therefore, the shield-driven tunnel in the future comes to be often planned by large depth. In that case, it is very important for the design of segment to investigate the influence due to construction loads in detail. Shield-jack thrust is the largest influential load to segments. </br>  In this study, the result of measurements in the deep underground tunnels are investigated at first. Secondary, the basic experiments are operated. These results are verified by three-dimensional FEM analysis. At last, the case studies are executed. </br>  Results of this study, the influence on segments by shield-jack thrust are showed clearly and the rational design on segments due to the loads.

  • Behavior of composite segment for shield tunnel

    Composite segment has been developed for obtaining high capacity in lining of shield tunnel subject to high hydraulic pressure and earth pressure in deep underground, which is made of steel plates connected to an infill of high fluidity concrete with shear connectors. However, a rational design method for composite segments can not be established, because the behavior of composite segments is not clarified. The purpose of this paper is to study the behavior of the most complicated composite segment with six steel plates using finite element method and the four-point bending tests. The effects of the shear studs and the thicknesses of steel plates were verified and estimated quantitatively. Meanwhile, the failure modes of composite segments were investigated.   • Advancing sustainable urban development in China

    Chinese urban life is improving rapidly in line with the country&apos;s economic growth. However, public services are not able to meet the needs of the improving urban life due to insufficient urban infrastructure. How to provide good public services is a question that needs to be considered further, as well as how to continue sustainable urban development in China. This paper examines the current state of urban development and investment conditions in China. The characteristics of urban infrastructure construction and the associated problems are also investigated. Considering the conditions of urban development in China and similar experiences worldwide, the utilisation of underground space for urban infrastructure construction is suggested as the main direction for sustainable development. Underground utilities, utility tunnels and stormwater systems are recommended for rationalising urban infrastructure construction and city flood prevention, as well as for providing new water resources. In addition, general strategies are proposed for sustainable urban development. If underground space is effectively utilised and general strategies implemented, public services can be improved rapidly and sustainable urban development can be realised for all cities in China.

    The public water supply line is required to build depth underground in an urban district in recent years. However the construction method has not been completely established especially for a large diameter water tunnel built in the congested urban district. As the latest water tunnel structure the separated-type water tunnel structure composite of steel liner and RC segments linings has been proposed in Japan. However the buckling of steel liner has not been solved which is obstructing the application of new water tunnel structure considering the high hydrostatic pressure is inevitably built up in the void between RC lining and liner during an operation period. In this article the study on buckling of locally supported steel liner encased in RC linings is carried out using the numerical analysis. The encased liner fails in single-lobe buckling and the critical pressure is related to not only the geometries of steel liners but also the initial gap are identified. Meanwhile the existing buckling equations are examined and discussed and the design procedure for locally supported steel liner is presented.

    In large cities in Japan, as the shallow underground is extremely complex use nowadays, we need to construct new infra-structures in deeper underground. Water pipelines are not exceptional. In deep underground, the water pressure exceeds, the buckling of steel water pipes is a considerable problem. To prevent the buckling, it is necessary to study the mechanism of its buckling behavior for the design of such pipelines. In this paper, the buckling behavior is mentioned from model tests using aluminum seamless cylindrical pipe with water pressure. The result of the experiment is compared with the analytical results by FEM, then the behavior of buckling is discussed.

    The shear force between the rings occurs due to the splice effect for the shield tunnel assembled in a staggered pattern. When the width of segment is enlarged, the additional moment due to the shear force increases accordingly. The distribution of moment in transverse direction of segment is non-uniform and concentrated at the side of segment. <br>In this paper, the flat-type reinforced concrete segments with full-scale size were directly loaded on the circumferential joints to failure. Meanwhile the segment rings were analyzed based on the beam-spring model and shell-spring model, respectively. From the results of experiment and numerical analysis, the moment concentration degree along the width of segment was investigated and the rational design method for the segment with enlarged width was suggested.

  • A study of the localized bearing capacity of reinforced concrete K-segment

    To control the thrust force of the shield jacks, the localized bearing capacity should be estimated when instability occurs for reinforced-concrete K-segment under eccentric compression. Then a method based on the moment-force interaction and the effect of bolt pockets is proposed. The method considers that the load corresponding to the appearance of the first crack is the load of bond cracking at sigma(c) = 0.3-0.4f(c)' (f(c)' compressive strength of concrete), and assumes that the K-segment is a column which is subjected to axial loading and biaxial bending. Analytical results were compared with experimental values obtained from four reinforced-concrete K-segments. Using the strain gauges in concrete cover during the loading process, load-strain curves can be plotted and used to describe K-segment behavior. It was found that the failure of reinforced-concrete segments is a process, and bolt pockets reduce the bearing capacity of K-segment. The starting point is the cracking load point where cracks initiated on the concrete cover of the cross-section with bolt pockets. The ultimate load point is the top of failure process, namely the stress of this point attains the compressive strength of the concrete. The experimental results are close to the analytical values. The method is rational and can be used for stability analysis of reinforced-concrete segments. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    In greater Tokyo, there are plans to construct new belt highway and ring road toreduce terrible traffic congestion in the urban area But it is difficult to constructhem because there is so much infrastructure which was constructed over pastyears above ground and shallow underground. It is necessary of using the deep underground, and we must construct connecting sections of tunnel without cut and cover method. The highway needs long changing lanes, so new a construction methodthat stabilizes tunnel structure of connecting section without obstructive pillars is required. The objective of this research is to propose this new method, reinforcing shield tunnel with transverse arched structures and ground anchors without pillars in the connecting section, and analyze dynamics behavior of this compound structure.

    The Sambongihara Tunnel is on the Tohoku Shinkansen Line. The geology of this tunneling site mainly consists of alternating layers of unconsolidated sandy soil under high hydraulic pressures and cohesive soil. This tunnel was excavated using the NATM, but the tunnel face collapsed twice, preventing the tunnel construction from advancing as scheduled. We therefore conducted an in-depth study to develop a new tunneling technique, aimed at improving efficiency and safety of the work. The new tunneling method uses a standard earth and mud pressure shield to maintain face stability and ensure good excavating capability. This paper outlines the construction and design of the linings selected for this tunneling practice.

    As well known, the water pipeline is one of the most important lifelines, any accident of the water pipe will seriously affect our urban life. When the water pipelines constructed in deep underground, the buckling of water pipes under external pressure is considered for existing high ground water pressure. To prevent such buckling, it is necessary to study the buckling behavior, buckling design method and the enhancement measures of water pipe.<BR>In this paper, the bucklingbehavior of the steel pipe with ring-stiffeners is studied by numerical analysisusing FEM codes. The results of the conventional analytical method is compared with that of numerical analysis and the more rational buckling design method and the reinforcement of steel water pipe is discussed.

    In the design of tunnel linings constructed with steel fiber reinforcement concrete, the second straight-line of a two-straight-line model as a tension-softening curve is adopted in this study. The influence of tensile limit strain on the lining strength and characteristics of cracks caused by stress resultant were examined in order to obtain the lining strength and the crack width from bending test results handily and to reflect it in the lining design. As a result, the method for estimating the crack width was clarified, and the method for approximating two parameters of the tension-softening curve from a load-crack width curve obtained by a bending test was proposed.

    Composite segment is the steel structure, which is filled with high flowability concrete. The cross section of segment can be made small because its stiffness is bigger than that of RC structure and others. Steel shell and concrete are combined by the stud bolts welded on the inner surface of the shell. Some loading tests were carried out to verify the structural advantages of the segment and examine the propriety of reinforced concrete theory and three dimentional finite element method.     As well known, after the infrastructure construction during the past years, it is very difficult to keep enough space to construct new infrastructure in shallow underground. The new water pipelines have to be built in deep underground. To make water pipelines construction more economy and rationalization, the separate-typed segment structure scheme was proposed and studied, which can be simultaneously build outer tunnel and inner pipe, but will leave little gap between the outer RC segment and the inner pipe. In case that great underground water pressure directly acts to pipeline, the pipeline is easily destroyed due to buckling. In this paper, we will study the buckling of water pipeline subjected to the great underground water pressure, and the design method of pipeline bucking built by separate-typed segment structure.

    In the design for the retaining wall of deep circular shafts, the wall thickness, which greatly affects the costs of shaft construction, is usually determined based on the results of two-dimensional cross-sectional analysis. However, the standard structural model and design loads for such analysis, which allow the rational design of the wall thickness, have not yet been established. The authors performed cross-sectional analyses on five conventional two-dimensional models, to evaluate the appropriateness of these models and propose a rational two-dimensional model capable of faithfully reproducing the three-dimensional behaviors of the retaining wall for circular shafts.

    It has been already suggested that the Beam-Spring Model, in which ground springs set all around the tunnel lining, is the most rational design method of shield tunnel lining constructed in hard and strong ground. Using the design model, some sensitivity analysis with several kinds of factors are carried out. Applicability of the model to actual design of tunnel lining is investigated by comparing the result of the analyses and the in-situ measurements.     In order to investigate the seismic behavior and seismic design methods in the transverse direction of a shield tunnel, a series of model shaking table tests and a two-dimensional finite element dynamic analysis on the tests are carried out. Two kinds of static analytical methods based on ground tunnel composite finite element model and beam-spring element model are proposed, and the validity of the static analyses is verified by model shaking table tests. The investigation concerns the dynamic response behavior of a tunnel and the ground, the interaction between the tunnel and ground, and an evaluation of different seismic design methods. Results of the investigation indicate that the shield tunnel follows the surrounding ground in displacement and dynamic characteristics in the transverse direction; also, the static analytical methods proposed by the authors can be used directly as the seismic design methods in the transverse direction of a shield tunnel.

    The relationship between the segment width and the distribution of bending stress is discussed based on the test results of six types of flat-type RC segment and FEM analyses. The results of these experiments and FEM analyses clearly show that the bending stress in the direction of width was concentrated on the edge of the specimen, and the stress concentration increased as ratio B/h increased. Based on the tests and the experience in construction, values for ratios B/h and B/D are proposed.

    Groundwater leakage in shield tunneling causes deterioration of not only the tunnel but also the surrounding earth formation. Therefore, groundwater leakage is an important question when tunnels are considered in view of their durability though the leakage maintenance requires an investment of money. Because the water leakage occurs at segment joints in most cases, a selection of segment sealing materials plays an important part in tunnel waterproofing. So far, the selection of the seals, forms and measurements has been determined by experience and actual results. Thus, design for the waterproofing is yet to be standardized. In this report, various waterproofing tests using hydrotite seals which are most widely used are presented. Based on the test results, a proposal of the waterproofing design based on packing principles is also presented in this report.

    At present, the allowable stress design method is usually applied to the design for shield segments. However, most of concrete structures tend to be designed from the limit state design method. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the applicability of the limit state design method to shield segments.<BR>At first, the partial safety factors were determined from contrast between the design results of the limit state design method. Secondary the provisional design was performed and the design results were discussed. As a result of this study, the limit state design method is applicable and useful as the design method for shield segments.

    We have developed Ductile Cast Iron Segments, which can be erected automatically and speedily in shield tunnel construction. This segment has new structure joint instead of bolt joint which is difficult to automatize erecting. Segment joint is wedge type "AS joint", and ring joint is hole-in-anchor type "Anchor joint". These joints can be jointed by sliding segment in the direction of tunnel axis and pressing. Moreover, as the bolt box is not needed, inner smoothness and omission of the secondary tunnel lining can be realized. In this report, we will describe about element technique of segment, the concept of design and the result of trial construction in subway tunnel. In the trial construction, erecting man-hour was 51 % of that of bolt method segment, and circularity of tunnel has shown the better result.

    Presently, a tunnel sustaining the outer load and the load caused by inner water pressure with a primary lining made up of segments is usually selected for a large-scale underground shield tunnel project. The Advanced Construction Technology Center, commissioned by the Ministry of Construction and others, has been studying problems related to design methods and the planning of such projects for a few years. Here is an outline of the conclusions we have reached on segment structure and design methods.

    in order to investigate the seismic behavior and the seismic design methods of a shield tunnel in the transverse direction, a series of model shaking table tests was carried out, and the 2D FEM dynamic analysis and the static analysis based on the seismic deformation method were performed. The investigation concerns the response behavior of tunnel and ground, the interaction between tunnel and ground, and the evaluation of different seismic design methods. Results of the investigation indicate that a shield tunnel follows the surrounding ground in dynamic characteristics, the static FEM model or the beam-spring model can be used as a useful analytical model for the seismic design of a shield tunnel.

  • Seismic behavior in longitudinal direction of shield tunnel located at irregular ground

    In order to investigate the seismic behavior in the longitudinal direction of a shield tunnel, a series of model shaking table tests was carried out and the response analyses of the shield tunnel were performed with emphasis on the time-history seismic deformation method. The investigation concerns vibration characteristics of the tunnel, the interaction between tunnel and ground, the analytical model of the tunnel, etc, In the model tests, an irregular ground was focused, materials of ground and tunnel were chosen according to law of similarity. An analytical model in the longitudinal direction of the shield tunnel for the seismic deformation method was proposed and response displacements of the free ground were calculated with the 3D FEM dynamic analysis and the ID multiple reflection response analysis.

    In recent years, a lot of underground rivers and ponds are constructed for the purpose of flood control by the shield tunneling method in urban areas such as Tokyo and Osaka. These tunnels and ponds are subjected to not only the earth pressure and water pressure from the outside of them but also the high water pressure from the inside of them. There are many problems that should be clear for getting the good tunnel. For example, what sort of structures of the tunnel lining is better and what sort of the design method of the tunnel lining is more rational. In this paper, the behavior of the primary lining and the secondary lining and the behavior of the inner water pressure are clarified from the results of simplified model test and their analytical investigations. As a result, the analyical model by which is reasonably able to explain the behavior of the shield tunnel subjected to the inner water pressure is shown. Moreover the rational structure and the design method of the tunnel tinning is proposed.

    Because of the lack of the fundamental test data, the current design method of liner plate structures depends on the impracticable or only theoretical calculation. Therefore there exists some differences in their point of view between each makers. Accordingly, the design method needs to be standardized. This study refers to several loading tests and analyses of liner plates and their structures. Their available ratios of bending stiffness are attempted to reveal by the tests. Consequently, the Beam-Spring Model can simulate the behavior of structures of liner plates in a good accuracy.

    This paper explains the process and details of development work carried out in order to introduce the centrifugal compaction applied for manufacturing hume pipes as a new manufacturing method of RC segments that were manufactured using the vibrating compaction in the past. Through this study, the authors were able to establish manufacturing conditions (mold structure, concrete depositing method, concrete mixing condition, conditions for application of centrifugal force) to obtain high strength concrete of stable quality with excellent joint surface finish. Studies were also conducted on production processes and factory equipment, thus enabling realization of this manufacturing method as an actual production line and increasing efficiency in manufacturing RC segments.

    With the aim of reducing the construction costs of shield tunnels for gas pipelines, Tokyo Gas has decided to use a new type segment called a tenon segment. This segment differs from the standard RC segment with metal-joints as used widely in sewage tunnels in that it features elimination of the joint by using an uneven tenon between the rings. In applying this segment, safety as a structure was verified by conducting numerical analyses and various performance tests using full-sized segments. In these studies, a rational design method was realized by proposing structural analysis models enabling evaluation of structural characteristics of this segment.

    Recently, The width of the segment used the shield tunneling method tends to become wider. When the segment rings are jointed staggeringly, the shearing force generated by the splice effect will act on the longitudinal joint bolt. The bending stress generated by this shearing force is deemed to increase and concentrate on the end of the segment according to the increase of the width of the segment.<BR>The object of this study is to analyze the relationship between the width of the segment and the distribution of the bending stress experimentally, by using four types (width 300, 400, 500, 600mm) of flat-type RC segment models.<BR>Through this experiment, we found that the increase of the segment-width causes the concentration of the bending stress at the end of the segment. Therefore when designate the segment wider than 1200mm, it is necessary to examine this increase of the bending stress and consider the effective countermeasure.

    The lateral loading tests of the tunnel lining model are carried out in the sand-box in order to evaluate the interaction between the deformation of tunnel lining and the pressure acting upon it.<BR>Two types of lining model, steel and acryle pipes are used. The former has quite high stiffness and size of 200mm external diameter, 400mm width and 10mm thickness, and the later has flexible property with the same diameter and width of steel and 3mm thickness.<BR>From the experiments, it is seen that the pressure directly acting upon the lining is changed according to the deformation of the lining itself. The pressure to be changed by the lining deformation, is evaluated by the analytical modd in which the ground is expressed by the elastic springs setted over around the lining.

    The analytical proposal was investigated through a series of model tests on the bending behavior in the longitudinal direction of shield tunnels with secondary linings. The analytical model is composed of beams and springs which simulate the primary and secondary linings, joints and the interaction between the linings respectively.     Bending test and lateral loading test of the box-type RC segment, with 9500mm external diameter, 1200mm wide, 530mm hight of main girdar, and 230mm thickness of skin plate, are conducted so as to determine the effective width of the skin plate. It is confirmed that whole skin plate works against bending because plane sections including skin plate before bending remain plane after bending (Bernoulli's principle). On the other hand, stress state of skin plate under the lateral load is found to be the same with the half-infinite 2-dimensional elastic plate subjected to in-plane varying lateral load, hence the effective width can be determined focucing on the stress state.

    When designing an earthquake-proof of shield tunnels, it is necessary to take into due consideration the axial force which arises from phase differences in seismic wave transmission in the axial direction. The important point of the analysis is whether the evaluation of the axial tensile stiffness of the tunnel is valid.<br>In order to investigate the axial stiffness of shield tunnels, tensile loading tests were conducted using a specimen of actual size with primary and secondary linings, which corresponds to a shield tunnel of about 14m O. D..<br>The results clarified the relationship for the entire lining strain-stiffness, and information was obtained concerning the behavior of lining components, such as cracks in the secondary lining and bond failure of reinforcing bars. Further more, in order to characterize the behavior of long undersea tunnels during earthquakes, seismic response was calculated from the strain-stiffness relationship of the lining obtained by these tests.

    In earthquake-proof designing on shield tunnel, the accurate evaluation of the axial stiffness of the tunnel is extremely important. Because the shield tunnel lining consists of many tunnel segments with joints, bolts, and other fasteners, and the inner surface is protected with a secondary lining, evaluation of the stiffness is not simple.<br>Shearing experiments were carried out on the lining models with different types of isolation. It was found that the shearing characteristic of isolation could for the most part be expressed by Coulomb's criterion.<br>Further, axial seismic responses of the shield tunnel were analyzed with a new analytical model that allowed for isolation effects and was verified with experimental results. It confirmed the observations that the axial response could be reduced by the insertion of an isolation sheet between the primary and secondary linings.

    This paper investigates the behavior of shield tunnels reinforced by secondary lining based on experimental results. Test models are composed of notched steel rings with mortar cast-in-place to their interiors.<br>Concentrated load is applied at the models which are elastically supported. Three major types of the models are experimented; the two of which are one with dowels and the other without dowels between steel and mortar rings, and that the third is a model in which bonding between outer and inner rings are increased by using resin mortar as a secondary lining. Based on the experimental results, analytic model for two-layer structures, the model for composite structures and the model for intermediate state of structures are proposed. Furthermore the study is made on the application of those analytic models to design practice of shield tunnels.

    In this article, the bucking of cylindrical shells with longitudinal joint has been investigated through the experimental and numerical analysis. It was clarified that the buckling behavior of cylindrical shells with longitudinal joints under lateral external pressure is not only related to its dimension, but also longitudinal joint and an imperfection. The buckling of cylindrical shells with rigid joint buckles only once and in multi-lobe buckling, whereas one with flexible joints buckles twice and firstly in single-lobe buckling in the vicinity of the joint, secondly in multi-lobe buckling in remaining un-deformed area. And the more flexible the longitudinal joint, the lower the critical pressure, with respect to the same dimension of jointed cylindrical shells and imperfection condition. Moreover the numerical analysis approaches were also presented and verified, by which the imperfection can greatly enlarge the effect of joint on buckling has been demonstrated.   • Behavior of composite segment for shield tunnel

    Composite segment has been developed for obtaining high capacity in lining of shield tunnel subject to high hydraulic pressure and earth pressure in deep underground, which is made of steel plates connected to an infill of high fluidity concrete with shear connectors. However, a rational design method for composite segments can not be established, because the behavior of composite segments is not clarified. The purpose of this paper is to study the behavior of the most complicated composite segment with six steel plates using finite element method and the four-point bending tests. The effects of the shear studs and the thicknesses of steel plates were verified and estimated quantitatively. Meanwhile, the failure modes of composite segments were investigated. Comparisons show that the finite element model is suitable for composite segments and predicts the behavior of composite segments accurately. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    Chinese urban life is improving rapidly in line with the country&apos;s economic growth. However, public services are not able to meet the needs of the improving urban life due to insufficient urban infrastructure. How to provide good public services is a question that needs to be considered further, as well as how to continue sustainable urban development in China. This paper examines the current state of urban development and investment conditions in China. The characteristics of urban infrastructure construction and the associated problems are also investigated. Considering the conditions of urban development in China and similar experiences worldwide, the utilisation of underground space for urban infrastructure construction is suggested as the main direction for sustainable development. Underground utilities, utility tunnels and stormwater systems are recommended for rationalising urban infrastructure construction and city flood prevention, as well as for providing new water resources. In addition, general strategies are proposed for sustainable urban development. If underground space is effectively utilised and general strategies implemented, public services can be improved rapidly and sustainable urban development can be realised for all cities in China.

    The public water supply line is required to build depth underground in an urban district in recent years. However the construction method has not been completely established especially for a large diameter water tunnel built in the congested urban district. As the latest water tunnel structure the separated-type water tunnel structure composite of steel liner and RC segments linings has been proposed in Japan. However the buckling of steel liner has not been solved which is obstructing the application of new water tunnel structure considering the high hydrostatic pressure is inevitably built up in the void between RC lining and liner during an operation period. In this article the study on buckling of locally supported steel liner encased in RC linings is carried out using the numerical analysis. The encased liner fails in single-lobe buckling and the critical pressure is related to not only the geometries of steel liners but also the initial gap are identified. Meanwhile the existing buckling equations are examined and discussed and the design procedure for locally supported steel liner is presented.

  • A study of the localized bearing capacity of reinforced concrete K-segment

    To control the thrust force of the shield jacks, the localized bearing capacity should be estimated when instability occurs for reinforced-concrete K-segment under eccentric compression. Then a method based on the moment-force interaction and the effect of bolt pockets is proposed. The method considers that the load corresponding to the appearance of the first crack is the load of bond cracking at sigma(c) = 0.3-0.4f(c)' (f(c)' compressive strength of concrete), and assumes that the K-segment is a column which is subjected to axial loading and biaxial bending. Analytical results were compared with experimental values obtained from four reinforced-concrete K-segments. Using the strain gauges in concrete cover during the loading process, load-strain curves can be plotted and used to describe K-segment behavior. It was found that the failure of reinforced-concrete segments is a process, and bolt pockets reduce the bearing capacity of K-segment. The starting point is the cracking load point where cracks initiated on the concrete cover of the cross-section with bolt pockets. The ultimate load point is the top of failure process, namely the stress of this point attains the compressive strength of the concrete. The experimental results are close to the analytical values. The method is rational and can be used for stability analysis of reinforced-concrete segments. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    The Sambongihara Tunnel is on the Tohoku Shinkansen Line. The geology of this tunneling site mainly consists of alternating layers of unconsolidated sandy soil under high hydraulic pressures and cohesive soil. This tunnel was excavated using the NATM, but the tunnel face collapsed twice, preventing the tunnel construction from advancing as scheduled. We therefore conducted an in-depth study to develop a new tunneling technique, aimed at improving efficiency and safety of the work. The new tunneling method uses a standard earth and mud pressure shield to maintain face stability and ensure good excavating capability. This paper outlines the construction and design of the linings selected for this tunneling practice.

Although eccentric lateral pressures greatly affect the design results, there is no theoretical basis to properly determine their values at present.<br>This study predicted the lateral pressures acting on the retaining wall for this deep cylindrical shaft which was constructed by the diaphragm wall method, revealed from both measurement and analysis that eccentric lateral pressures could be caused by water pressure fluctuation under some circumstances, and investigated problems related to the current design methods.

    It has been already suggested that the Beam-Spring Model, in which ground springs set all around the tunnel lining, is the most rational design method of shield tunnel lining constructed in hard and strong ground. Using the design model, some sensitivity analysis with several kinds of factors are carried out. Applicability of the model to actual design of tunnel lining is investigated by comparing the result of the analyses and the in-situ measurements. Consequently, it reveals that this design model is able to simulate the behavior of shield tunnel lining and also execute both safeness and economizing for shield tunnel lining.

    In order to investigate the seismic behavior and seismic design methods in the transverse direction of a shield tunnel, a series of model shaking table tests and a two-dimensional finite element dynamic analysis on the tests are carried out. Two kinds of static analytical methods based on ground tunnel composite finite element model and beam-spring element model are proposed, and the validity of the static analyses is verified by model shaking table tests. The investigation concerns the dynamic response behavior of a tunnel and the ground, the interaction between the tunnel and ground, and an evaluation of different seismic design methods. Results of the investigation indicate that the shield tunnel follows the surrounding ground in displacement and dynamic characteristics in the transverse direction; also, the static analytical methods proposed by the authors can be used directly as the seismic design methods in the transverse direction of a shield tunnel.

    The relationship between the segment width and the distribution of bending stress is discussed based on the test results of six types of flat-type RC segment and FEM analyses. The results of these experiments and FEM analyses clearly show that the bending stress in the direction of width was concentrated on the edge of the specimen, and the stress concentration increased as ratio B/h increased. Based on the tests and the experience in construction, values for ratios B/h and B/D are proposed.

Because the water leakage occurs at segment joints in most cases, a selection of segment sealing materials plays an important part in tunnel waterproofing. So far, the selection of the seals, forms and measurements has been determined by experience and actual results. Thus, design for the waterproofing is yet to be standardized. In this report, various waterproofing tests using hydrotite seals which are most widely used are presented. Based on the test results, a proposal of the waterproofing design based on packing principles is also presented in this report.

Secondary the provisional design was performed and the design results were discussed. As a result of this study, the limit state design method is applicable and useful as the design method for shield segments.

    In recent years, a lot of underground rivers and ponds are constructed for the purpose of flood control by the shield tunneling method in urban areas such as Tokyo and Osaka. These tunnels and ponds are subjected to not only the earth pressure and water pressure from the outside of them but also the high water pressure from the inside of them. There are many problems that should be clear for getting the good tunnel. For example, what sort of structures of the tunnel lining is better and what sort of the design method of the tunnel lining is more rational. In this paper, the behavior of the primary lining and the secondary lining and the behavior of the inner water pressure are clarified from the results of simplified model test and their analytical investigations. As a result, the analyical model by which is reasonably able to explain the behavior of the shield tunnel subjected to the inner water pressure is shown. Moreover the rational structure and the design method of the tunnel tinning is proposed.

    Because of the lack of the fundamental test data, the current design method of liner plate structures depends on the impracticable or only theoretical calculation. Therefore there exists some differences in their point of view between each makers. Accordingly, the design method needs to be standardized. This study refers to several loading tests and analyses of liner plates and their structures. Their available ratios of bending stiffness are attempted to reveal by the tests. Consequently, the Beam-Spring Model can simulate the behavior of structures of liner plates in a good accuracy.

    In order to investigate the seismic behavior in the longitudinal direction of a shield tunnel, a series of model shaking table tests was carried out and the response analyses of the shield tunnel were performed with emphasis on the time-history seismic deformation method. The investigation concerns vibration characteristics of the tunnel, the interaction between tunnel and ground, the analytical model of the tunnel, etc, In the model tests, an irregular ground was focused, materials of ground and tunnel were chosen according to law of similarity. An analytical model in the longitudinal direction of the shield tunnel for the seismic deformation method was proposed and response displacements of the free ground were calculated with the 3D FEM dynamic analysis and the ID multiple reflection response analysis.

    We have developed Ductile Cast Iron Segments, which can be erected automatically and speedily in shield tunnel construction. This segment has new structure joint instead of bolt joint which is difficult to automatize erecting. Segment joint is wedge type "AS joint", and ring joint is hole-in-anchor type "Anchor joint". These joints can be jointed by sliding segment in the direction of tunnel axis and pressing. Moreover, as the bolt box is not needed, inner smoothness and omission of the secondary tunnel lining can be realized. In this report, we will describe about element technique of segment, the concept of design and the result of trial construction in subway tunnel. In the trial construction, erecting man-hour was 51 % of that of bolt method segment, and circularity of tunnel has shown the better result.

    Presently, a tunnel sustaining the outer load and the load caused by inner water pressure with a primary lining made up of segments is usually selected for a large-scale underground shield tunnel project. The Advanced Construction Technology Center, commissioned by the Ministry of Construction and others, has been studying problems related to design methods and the planning of such projects for a few years. Here is an outline of the conclusions we have reached on segment structure and design methods.

  • Development of bolt-less, automated erection ductile cast iron segments

    We have developed Ductile Cast Iron Segments, which can be erected automatically and speedily in shield tunnel construction. This segment has new structure joint instead of bolt joint which is difficult to automatize erecting. Segment joint is wedge type "AS joint", and ring joint is hole-in-anchor type "Anchor joint". These joints can be jointed by sliding segment in the direction of tunnel axis and pressing. Moreover, as the bolt box is not needed, inner smoothness and omission of the secondary tunnel lining can be realized. In this report, we will describe about element technique of segment, the concept of design and the result of trial construction in subway tunnel. In the trial construction, erecting man-hour was 51 % of that of bolt method segment, and circularity of tunnel has shown the better result.

That is to say, segmental joints as well as reinforcing bars are liable to be thickened, and thus shield tunnellings are compelled to use high-price segments. In consequence, proportion of the cost of segmental linings to that of entire tunnelling works attains 30 to 40%.<BR>Tokyo Gas was therefore engaged in developing new type segments from 1992 to reduce the construction cost of this shield construction method. An outline of this development, which may be divided roughly into rationalization of segment structure and retionalization (introduction of tenon segment) of manufacturing method using centrifugal compaction.

    The lateral loading tests of the tunnel lining model are carried out in the sand-box in order to evaluate the interaction between the deformation of tunnel lining and the pressure acting upon it.<BR>Two types of lining model, steel and acryle pipes are used. The former has quite high stiffness and size of 200mm external diameter, 400mm width and 10mm thickness, and the later has flexible property with the same diameter and width of steel and 3mm thickness.<BR>From the experiments, it is seen that the pressure directly acting upon the lining is changed according to the deformation of the lining itself. The pressure to be changed by the lining deformation, is evaluated by the analytical modd in which the ground is expressed by the elastic springs setted over around the lining.

When the segment rings are jointed staggeringly, the shearing force generated by the splice effect will act on the longitudinal joint bolt. The bending stress generated by this shearing force is deemed to increase and concentrate on the end of the segment according to the increase of the width of the segment.<BR>The object of this study is to analyze the relationship between the width of the segment and the distribution of the bending stress experimentally, by using four types (width 300, 400, 500, 600mm) of flat-type RC segment models.<BR>Through this experiment, we found that the increase of the segment-width causes the concentration of the bending stress at the end of the segment. Therefore when designate the segment wider than 1200mm, it is necessary to examine this increase of the bending stress and consider the effective countermeasure.

It is confirmed that whole skin plate works against bending because plane sections including skin plate before bending remain plane after bending (Bernoulli's principle). On the other hand, stress state of skin plate under the lateral load is found to be the same with the half-infinite 2-dimensional elastic plate subjected to in-plane varying lateral load, hence the effective width can be determined focucing on the stress state.

D..<br>The results clarified the relationship for the entire lining strain-stiffness, and information was obtained concerning the behavior of lining components, such as cracks in the secondary lining and bond failure of reinforcing bars. Further more, in order to characterize the behavior of long undersea tunnels during earthquakes, seismic response was calculated from the strain-stiffness relationship of the lining obtained by these tests.

    This paper investigates the behavior of shield tunnels reinforced by secondary lining based on experimental results. Test models are composed of notched steel rings with mortar cast-in-place to their interiors.<br>Concentrated load is applied at the models which are elastically supported. Three major types of the models are experimented; the two of which are one with dowels and the other without dowels between steel and mortar rings, and that the third is a model in which bonding between outer and inner rings are increased by using resin mortar as a secondary lining. Based on the experimental results, analytic model for two-layer structures, the model for composite structures and the model for intermediate state of structures are proposed. Furthermore the study is made on the application of those analytic models to design practice of shield tunnels.

    This paper investigates the behavior of shield tunnels reinforced by secondary lining based on experimental results. Test models are composed of notched steel rings with mortar cast-in-place to their interiors.<br>Concentrated load is applied at the models which are elastically supported. Three major types of the models are experimented; the two of which are one with dowels and the other without dowels between steel and mortar rings, and that the third is a model in which bonding between outer and inner rings are increased by using resin mortar as a secondary lining. Based on the experimental results, analytic model for two-layer structures, the model for composite structures and the model for intermediate state of structures are proposed. Furthermore the study is made on the application of those analytic models to design practice of shield tunnels.
