    By analyzing the works of Michael Palmer, one of the leading poets in the States, this research investigated the function of “Objectivism” in American poetry. The project was a pioneering attempt in that it approached the actual state of Objectivism through the close readings of Palmer’s poems.
    The above research proved the following point. Unlike Speculative Realism (a recent philosophical movement underscoring the “inhumanistic” aspects of objects), Palmer’s works show us an open field of reverberating objects promoting the “conversations” among various spheres of cultures and histories. This fact reveals that the Objectivism of poetry has a function to encourage us to take part in the multiple conversations, which establish a forum for equal and sound negotiations in our time.

    The achievement of this study is that it has elucidated how "anti-elegiac" elements work in the works of American poet Michael Palmer. Anti-elegy does not simply eliminate the literary mode itself of elegy, but rather functions to "evolve, cross-hybridize, and self-destruct" it. Focusing on that point, this study has analyzed the paradoxical contention between the elegiac and the anti-elegic in Palmer's works. As a result, it has become clear that although poetry does not have the power to wipe out the tragic events in our time, it certainly works to resuscitate the power of language, which establishes the balance between positivity and negativity in our mind.

    The fruit of this research underscores that the American poet Michael Palmer's major poems can be best understood in the light of the Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben's theory of language. Agamben's contention is that the essential body of language arises only as "Potentiality," which accelerates our potential ability to generate any speech as long as we are yet to acquire such speech. After demonstrating that the above paradoxical notion plays a crucial role in Palmer's dominant works, I conclude that both Palmer and Agamben have tried to vitalize our sense of this primal language, a language indispensable to our being.

    かつて原作（オリジナル）の劣化したコピーとして低い地位が与えられがちであった「アダプテーション」（「翻案」「二次創作」など）は、文学、映画、演劇その他の媒体においてすぐれて現代的な創造行為として脚光を浴びつつある。そこにはグローバル化やIT革命によって言語、メディア、文化の境界が消失する「ポストメディア」とも呼ばれる時代背景があり、広義の「アダプテーション」が日常生活の中にも浸透して、内外での研究も盛んに行われている。しかし対象となる範囲があまりにも広いため、分析が欠けていたり、理論化が満足に行われていなかったりすることがままある。本研究はアダプテーションの諸相について、研究の領域と方法とをできる限り広範囲に捉え、理論的な考察と絡めつつ多角的・重層的に分析して総合的に把握することを目指して研究を進めた。
    研究初年度である2019年度は、アダプテーションの定義や広がり、問題点について研究グループ全体の基本的な合意を形成することに努めた。特にこれまで数次にわたり、文学系の研究者のみで科研費共同研究を行ってきたが、今回初めて法律の専門家を分担者に加え、知的財産権問題の整理を行った。これによって著作権法における「翻案」の臨界・判断基準、翻案と二次創作の境界等の問題が整理され、文学的研究のみに留まっていては得られない視座が得られた。
    こうした理論的基盤を踏まえ、メンバー各自が定めた領域の調査、研究を進め、研究メンバーが中心になって発行している研究誌等で発表した。口頭発表としては国際学会での発表も多かった。
    さらに、研究の一般公開という観点から、詩人の吉増剛造氏を招聘して、朗読パフォーマンスを行って頂いた。

    Globalization and the IT revolution, among other factors, have forced us to enter a “Postmedia Age” defined by profound changes on how we perceive traditional media and generic boundaries. Among these changes, the way we practice and analyze “translation” has seen important quantitative and qualitative transformations. In this research project, we looked at specific examples of literary, cinematic, artistic and philosophical works that were created in various languages, cultures and eras, in order to understand from a multilayered, interdisciplinary, and international perspective, the current state of translation and its significance within the context of this “Postmedia Age”. We also analyzed translation and the closely related practice of adaptation from a theoretical and practical perspective.

    This integrated research aimed to address in an international and interdisciplinary perspective the ethical issues (aesthetic, social, political, legal, economical) faced by translators. Besides literature, our analysis took into account films, art, music as well as other forms of media, covering a wide range of languages, countries and historical periods.
    Based on this methodology, we demonstrated that ethical problems stemming from translation appear in various contexts and are mediated through a wide range of cultural practices such as the creation of texts as autonomous entities, the importance given to the reader’s response, the limits given to the relation between source language and target language, the publishing strategies, censorship, as well as the impact of political and religious pressures. Our approach allowed to contribute in a significant manner to the emerging field of translation studies.

    This research demonstrated that the American poet Michael Palmer (b. 1943) employed Dante’s method of “polysemy”(i.e., packing multiple meanings in words or expressions), so that he could pursue the possibility of “resistant poetry.” The term “resistance” for Palmer does not mean a solipsistic view of a given war; it rather involves a sort of contrapuntal analysis, which clearly runs counter to the simplistic notions of binaries, such as good and evil, and the powerful and the masses. This paradoxical nature in Palmer’s practice operates as he tries to investigate the hidden lies and mendacities of the political slogans promoting war.

    The goal of this project was to analyze problems of interpretation and cultural misunderstandings stemming from the translation as well as the intertextual influence of a multiplicity of modern literary texts in a variety of languages depicting love and marriage.
