    One of the most difficult problems in acquiring Japanese sounds for Thai-speaking people is the discrimination of voiced stops from voiceless ones. In order to give appropriate pedagogical phonetic instruction to them, it is extremely significant to realize the specific features of learners' production and perception of these sounds. This study investigates the production and perception of stop sounds by Thai-speaking learners of Japanese. Phonetic data spoken by thirty speakers of different levels were collected. We first analyze acoustically the stop sounds of Japanese read by Thai-speaking learners, and compare with those by native speakers of Japanese. Secondly, we did a statistic procedure of these data. Then we revisit the representation of the Japanese stops by Thai learners on the basis of acoustic analysis. Preliminary results indicate that: (1) Both production and perception of plosives do not show improvement along with their language levels. (2) There exists a correlation between the ability of production and that of perception. (3) Pitch patterns give a great influence on the production and perception. (4) The order of acquiring voiceless stops is as follows: bilabial /p/ > alveolar /t/ > velar /k/. (5) The order of acquiring voiced stops is as follows: velar /g/ > alveolar /d/ > bilabial /b/.

  • Language Choice by Nepalese Community in Hong Kong : Language and Identity

    This paper describes the results of a sociolinguistic field survey of Nepalese conducted in Hong Kong. Through a description of the multilingual situation of Gurung speakers, a Nepalese ethnic minority, the research aims to show the language use of Gurung speakers. The Gurung are well-known for their role in the "Gurkha army". Sociolinguistic phenomena, such as code-switching appear according to the social qualities of the speaker, topic, and the context of their speech. Since Gurung speakers are an ethnic minority group in Hong Kong, Cantonese is an additional resource in their verbal repertoire. Language attitudes were also examined in this paper. Nepali was found to be the most favorably evaluated of the languages used. Moreover the use of mixed codes was not seen as inferior linguistic behavior, and appeared to be positively evaluated by the speakers. The speech data of third-generation Gurung shows that the most common language used is Cantonese, followed by Nepali, and then Gurung. While Nepali tend to be the language chosen in the home, Cantonese is the language of choice outside the home. It was also found that due to a rapid language shift that took place after 1997, all of the third-generation speakers of the present study have linguistic knowledge of Mandarin.

    The Namuyis, also known as Namuzis, are a branch of the Tibetan nationality, numbering 5,000 but with only a few fluent speakers of the ancestral language. The Namuyi language belongs to the Qiang branch of Tibeto-Burman and resembles Ersu but is rather different from Qiang, the language of the main group of Qiang people. The author plans to augment his fieldwork in summer 2004, aiming to collect words for the dictionary, preserve the oral literature as far as possible, analyze the linguistic structure, make recordings, and assess the state of the language. In this paper, based on the data gathered in the fieldwork, a sociolinguistic feature of the language will be discussed.

    本研究の構成員は、地域ごとに日本班、中国班（台湾、韓国、ベトナムも含む）インド・チベット・ブータン班に分かれ、研究対象ごとにそれぞれの内部で医事文献組、思想文献組およびフィールド組に分かれる。
    ２０１９年度は、まず最初の４ヶ月の間に１年間及び３年間の活動計画・研究目的などを構成員にメーリングリストで連絡し、総員の基本的なコンセンサスを得るべく議論を行った。さらに、各地域を担当する班ごとに、研究の進め方について打合せと情報交換を行い、各班および各組における研究計画を定めた。また、各班のフィールド組は、視察する機関や海外協力者との連絡と打ち合わせを行った。
    それを踏まえて、第１回全体会合を８月２日に開催した。このとき、各班が足並みをそろえた研究や作業を行えるように研究計画の調整を試み、当該時点までに進めてある研究内容についての報告会と勉強会も行った。
    ８月以降は各班の各構成員がそれぞれの課題と目標に基づいて作業を進めた。文献組は、必要な資料の収集に努め、適宜同一ユニットの人々と情報や意見を交換しつつ、重要文献の解読作用等を進めた。フィールド組の人は、夏から冬の休みの期間などを使って、各自の担当フィールドに可能な限り赴き、情報収集や資料収集などの活動を行った。
    年末の２０１９年１２月２９日には再び全体集会を行い、海外協力者の招聘と講演、および構成員による研究報告会等を実施しつつ、今年度の進行程度や成果を確認し、それを基に来年度の計画の打合せを行った。
    なお、コアメンバーの横手、浦山、内山はこれらの過程を通じて常に各構成員（研究分担者、研究協力者、海外協力者）の間に立って連絡を行いつつ、情報の共有や各班・各組における作業の進度あるいは方向等の調整にあたった。

    This is a preliminary study on the phylogeny of the Bumthang group of languages spoken in Central part of the Kingdom of Bhutan. The Bumthang group of languages comprises Mangdebi-kha, Bhumtang, Kheng, Kurtup, Chali, Dzala, Dakpa (Tawang Monpa) and 'Olekha.
    Throughout the research period of this project, we could work on all the languages mentioned above, under the auspices of the Dzongkha Development Commission. Main research findings obtained are as follows: data on basic vocabulary, socio-linguistic background, anthropological linguistic materials, and historical linguistic data of each language.

    Mangdebi kha, is a language of the East Bodish group spoken in the Mangde river basin, on the eastern slopes of the Black Mountains of west central Bhutan and also in adjacent parts of the western Black Mountains. The language is also spoken in several villages to the east of the Mangdechu between Trongsa and Zh'amgang. The Mangde speaking area is bounded to the west by Dzongkha, to the east by the Bumthang language, to the north by the Lakha speaking area, and to the south by the Kheng and Black Mountain Monpa languages. Throughout the research period, we could work on Tshangkha variety of Mangdebikha, under the auspices of the Dzongkha Development Commission of the Royal Government of Bhutan toward the completion of a grammar of Mangde. Main research findings we obtained are as follows: pitch accent system of compounding words, origin of basic words, case marking system, and sociolinguistic aspects of this language.

    I could work on this language under the auspices of the Dzongkha Development Commission of the Royal Government of Bhutan toward the completion of a grammar of Mangde. Initial results of the three fieldworks on the Mande spoken in Tshangkha, Tronsa include phonetics, phonology, morpho-syntax, and sociolinguistic aspects of the language as well as folk tales.

  • A Sociolinguistic Study on the Transition and Variation of Reading and Writing in Hong Kong.

    This study aims to clarify the Literacy, that is, 'reading ＆ writing' and social activities and phenomena concerned with them, about Hong Kong of post World War II. The main topics of discussion are focused on the relation between Literacy and transition of Hong Kong society around 1960-70's.
    The evidence proved that social transition in this period had forced the quality of Literacy such as ability of 'reading ＆ writing', subject and media for 'reading ＆ writing', identity or idea through 'reading ＆ writing', to change was true in this study. In the early 1960's, Secretariat for Chinese Affairs, a department of Hong Kong Government, began to use Chinese on letters for Chinese citizen. This service laid a foundation for 'Chinese official language movement' in the late 1960's. In 1970's, the consciousness of 'Hong Kong literature' was brought up with literary prize under the literary circle, but old type corporation and secondary school taught with Chinese (Cantonese) declined. Sift of the teaching language from Chinese (Cantonese) to English in schools caused the decline of old-fashioned idea; whereas, on the other hand, caused the consciousness of literature written in Chinese to rise.
    Addition to, the code of Cantonese braille was revised in the same period. This means that the Literacy tool for the blind person were confronted a change as same as the Literacy of sighted person.
    Oddly enough, 'this period is not only a reformation period of Literacy but also is the beginnings of sociolinguistics in Hong Kong. We guess that one of the reasons sociolinguistics began in this period was that language situation produced through the social transition was good material for sociolinguistics, especially in spoken language and synchronic study. We offered some new view points such as written language, historical study to sociolinguistics of Hong Kong successfully.

    19世紀から20世初頭にかけて欧州の探検家によるアジア遠征の報告書の中に、訪問した現地語の語彙を収集・記録したものがいくつか見られる。西南中国の調査記録のうち言語についての情報が比較的豊富な資料としてHodgson (1853)、Baber(1882)、Johnston (1908)、Davies (1909)等が挙げられる。本研究は清末にフランスの学者・探検家アンリドローヌが3年かけて四川省・貴州省・雲南省を踏破したした際に記録した45の言語・方言の328項目にわたる対照語彙集であるLangues des peuples non chinois de la chine, par le commandantd'Ollone, le Capitaine de Fleurelle, le Capitaine Lepage, le Lieutenant deBoyve （Documents scientifiques de la Mission d'Ollone,6） Ernest Leroux (1912) 所載の諸言語語彙について、それらが依拠する言語・方言の諸相を明らかにするための基礎的研究である。今年度は先ず序文をフランス語から邦訳し、本書執筆の意義、歴史的背景等を考察し、その後収録されている各語彙に関して中国で出版されている地誌やこれまで出版された当該地域で話されている諸言語の文法書・語彙集・関連論文や《藏缅语语音和词汇》(1991)、《藏緬語族語言詞匯》(1992)等と照らし合わせる作業を進めた。その結果、特に現在中国で藏羌彝走廊諸語（曾ては川西民族走廊地域と称された）の諸言語についての考察が進んだが、本書記載の語彙はかなりの精度をもって記述されていることが分かり、現在話されている語形との比較により、音韻変化についてについての知見を得ることができた。当初の予定では特に所載のナムイ語語彙の基礎方言となった地点の同定までを考えていたが、時間の制約により今回の研究期間まではそこまでは達成することができなかった。次年度以降も引き続き当該課題に取り組み、ナムイ語を含めてより多くの地点の同定を試みていく所存である。研究成果として、2024年9月19-20日にイタリア・ローマ第3大学にて開催予定のThe 12th International Conference of the European Association ofChinese Linguistics (EACL-12)にて、A lexical study ofLangues des peuples non chinois de la chineと題して研究発表し、論文化する予定である。

    広東語は中華人民共和国広州市及び香港特別行政区両都市の口語を標準とする漢語の一方言である。香港で話される語は1990年代初頭にある程度均一化が図られたものの、1997年の中国返還以降中国語の標準語たる普通話が普及してきていることで大いに変容を遂げているのも事実である。筆者は多言語社会香港における粤語の言語実態を特に現代における言語使用の動態を中心に、多面的且つ包括的に記述することを目的とした調査を行ってきている。本研究では、香港広東語の動詞連続を運動・移動表現を中心に例文を収集し当該構文の成立条件を考察し、そこからみられる香港広東語の動詞の性質について明らかにすることを目的とする研究を進めた。

    　本研究では、多言語社会香港における粤語（広東語）の言語実態を多面的且つ包括的に記述することを目的とし、その言語実態を音韻・形態・統語等の微視的なレベルから考察することを目標とする。　本期間は、現代香港粤語における進行中の言語変化の事例研究として、そのピッチレンジ（声調の音域）の実態を明らかにするために、1993年及び2019年に収集したインフォーマントの発話資料を用いて音響分析を施し声調レンジの実態を調査した。その結果、基本周波数（f0）音域を音響分析した結果、語彙に固有の声調レンジの幅は、性別という言語外要因の影響によって、ピッチレンジの算出に影響を与えることが示唆された。
