    <p> After the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, there is growing momentum for looking for the way how to apply STS knowledge to the society among STS scholars in Japan. Accordingly, they began to attempt to delineate the trajectory of the development of STS in Japan and explore the ideal future of it. However, most of the previous studies are qualitative investigations relied on the memories and experiences of the members of their community and there seems to be a lack of quantitative-based discussions. In this article, the author conducted text mining with the conference proceedings of the Japanese Society for Science and Technology Studies （JSSTS） to identify the chronological shift of the trend of research of STS and compared with the preceding studies with a qualitative approach. The results indicated the existence of trends in STS studies that several previous studies had asserted, such as the rise of science communication and its propaganda shift. The author concluded that the quantitative approach could contribute to the discussions about the identities and future selves of STSers in Japan.</p>

  • Responsible innovation in molecular robotics in Japan

    <p>Over the last decade Japanese researchers have taken the lead in the emerging discipline of molecular robotics. This new technology aims to produce artificial molecular systems that can adapt to changes in the environment, self-organize and evolve. This paper explores the question of how to stimulate responsible research and innovation in the field of molecular robotics technologies. For this, we first draw lessons from earlier societal responses in Japan to emerging technologies, such as genetic engineering, nanotechnology, synthetic biology and genomic research. Next we describe various real-time technology assessment (TA) activities on molecular robotics in Japan to depict the state-of-the-art of the academic and public debate on the social aspects of molecular robotics. Lessons from earlier societal responses to emerging technologies demonstrated three potential challenges: finding and involving the 'right' experts and stakeholders, keeping regulations up to date, and getting scientists and citizens involved in science communication. A literature review, 'future workshop' and scenario workshop raised a number of ethical, social, political and cultural issues, and addressed desirable and undesirable scenarios for the next few decades. Twitter text mining analysis indicates that the level of attention, knowledge and awareness about molecular robots among a broader audience is still very limited. In conclusion, we identify four activities crucial to enable responsible innovation in molecular robotics—getting to grips with the speed of the development of molecular robotics, monitoring related technical trends, the establishment of a more stable TA knowledge base, and a sustained interaction between molecular roboticists and social scientists.</p>

    Using CVs or Short Bios in published resources, such as the Internet enables us to analyze many issues concerning researchers' careers. However, relatively little effort has been devoted to this area, and availability of this method, concerning target researchers, such as the sector of their institution, country of residence, their visibility (i.e., the impact of their publications) was not known enough. To trace this activity, we examine how many contributions that we were able to unveil in terms of authors' countries of origin by using two types of samples: highly cited papers and papers that have yet to be cited at all. Then, we analyze the influence of these researchers' international movement. The results show the full landscape of the movement's influence on national publication, the characteristics of each country in term of researchers' countries of origin, their research experience and acquisition of the research funds of both internationally moved and domestic researchers. Finally, we assess the limitations of the method and topic to be addressed concerning this method. © AIT Austrian Institute of Technology GmbH Vienna 2013.
