     View Summary

Severe and multiple disabilities (SMD) refers to the simultaneous occurrence of intellectual and physical problems. SMD in children is difficult to assess, as they often do not have the proper language or bodily responses to represent their feelings. In this study, we propose a methodology for evaluating reactions of children with SMD to sensory stimuli that does not rely on observations by humans, but rather is based on automatic detection of video-recorded data and quantification by time-series analyses. We present two case studies with typical participants: one with large body movements (P1) and another with subtle body movements (P2). For P1, it was observed that he showed larger bodily movements just before the onset of tactile stimuli, while he became silent for approximately 10 s after the onset, with the stimuli causing him to reduce self-stimulatory behavior and pay attention to his external environment. For P2, two quantitative methodologies – correlation coefficient and Granger causality – were adopted, to compare behavioral difference during the presentation of either sour or sweet taste stimuli. For the sweet conditions, the movement of the mouth was considered to be generated by some internal causes. Through these experiments, we confirmed the authenticity of assessments made by the participants’ caregivers, and also revealed otherwise unseen behavioral patterns and structures.

PROCEEDINGS OF THE 2013 IEEE SYMPOSIUM ON COMPUTATIONAL INTELLIGENCE IN REHABILITATION AND ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGIES (CIRAT)     13 - 18  2013  [Refereed]

     View Summary

Automatic and efficient human pose estimation has great practical value in video surveillance. In this paper, we explore how a consumer depth sensor can assist with upper-body detection and pose estimation more precisely in the field of assistive technology for people with disabilities, and a novel real-time upper-body pose (orientation) estimation method is presented. At first, the Haar cascade based upper-body detection is conducted, and the depth information in a fixed subregion is extracted as the input feature vector. Then, support vector machine (SVM) and naive Bayes classifier are compared for estimating the upper-body orientation. Further, in order to acquire the continuous estimation data during a long time for behavioral analysis, we also adopt the support vector regression (SVR) to train a regression model. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

     View Summary

In this study, two software development projects were introduced to support timekeeping and reading for students with cognitive disabilities using mainstream mobile technology. In the first project, two versions of a countdown timer were developed that showed the remaining time graphically, by the area size. A unique feature was added to the developed prototypes, preventing the user from unintentionally interrupting the running of the timer. The ebook reader developed in the second project offered students the chance to point to a phrase and have it read aloud with a highlight box around the characters. It was important for the students to have a digital replica of the printed textbook being used at the same time by others in the class. The study highlighted a key consideration for assistive technology development for those with cognitive disabilities: that of the essential balance between technical features and human skills, such as the system's ease of use, look and feel as well as cognitive adaptation, whilst applying mainstream technology to the provision of specialized support. The study also showed that solutions to time and reading difficulties should be considered in relation to available technology and the surroundings of the users. © 2012 IEEE.

There are some children with reading difficulties in the regular class. They seem to have some problems in their perceptual or cognitive skills involved with reading process. In this study, we developed the multi-media learning support system "Touch & Read" for assisting their reading process. The system can zoom up the text, highlight the line in it, and read out it to present the information auditorily. Introducing this system to the regular class, we investigated the way of the learning support for the children with reading difficulties. Ahead of the introduction, we conducted the test to survey the children's decoding skills and visuoperceptual functions and identified the causes of reading difficulties. We provided the Touch & Read to children for their learning in the regular class, and observed how the children with reading difficulties used the system. As a result, it was suggested that children could use the system to compensate their perceptual or cognitive skills and achieve more efficient learning outcomes.

    EVERYDAY TECHNOLOGY FOR INDEPENDENCE AND CARE   29   897 - 904  2011  [Refereed]

     View Summary

Objective At present, pupils, teachers and parents struggle with the lack of textbooks and supporting materials in accessible formats that can be used by pupils with visual or print impairment including specific reading difficulties such as dyslexia. Independent projects in Japan and the UK were conceived to assess whether the provision of textbooks and teaching materials as electronic files, along with technologies to convert and 'read' them could provide a new and sustainable model and enhance the skills of the users.
Main Content In the UK, 40 students with print impairment were presented with Microsoft Windows XP system laptops that had specialist text to speech software. The software either provided full screen reading with highlighting and magnification or a tool bar above the etext provided in MS Word document format. The latter allowed for text resizing, colour changes, reading speed options, voice preferences and text highlighting. In Japan, Apple iPads were given to 30 self-selecting students (some of whom were dyslexic) over a period of 10 weeks. There was the option to use a 'Touch and Read' application which offered text to speech and phrase highlighting with an outlined box around the characters in vertical mode. These etext books were presented in PDF format with the same look and feel as the actual text books used by the rest of the class.
Results Over 90% of the students involved in the projects aged between 10 and 14 years showed improvements in self-esteem, continued to be motivated and there were clear indications that the use of the technology aided both reading skills and confidence levels. Teachers supporting the students in the UK study commented on significant improvements in reading skills for those who had dyslexia and improved concentration for those with visual impairments. Time saved by the use of electronic texts was also commented upon in relation to the provision of alternative formats. In the Japanese study, students chose to use the 'Touch and Read' software preferring the look and feel of the original text books and without training soon learnt to zoom and scroll on the iPads.
Conclusion The projects confirmed that making teaching materials available to print and visually impaired students in an appropriate electronic form along with access technologies to read them can make a significant difference to their reading, writing, confidence, development and inclusion. The same electronic materials can also provide productivity savings for staff in schools and local authorities who support, in particular, visually impaired students.

     View Summary

In this study, the impact of the wheelchair on the self-efficacy for the user was investigated with a newly developed scale called R-MATE (Retrospective Measurement on Assistive Technology Outcome). Using R-MATE, the user is asked to produce the time course line of their self-efficacy retrospectively. The line has the value of 100 as the baseline for the time period with no disability. The user is also asked to state their life events along the produced line, that relate to their disabilities and the introduction of Assistive Technology (AT). There were thirteen participants in this study. All the participants had Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) and used a powered wheelchair daily when this study was conducted. The result showed two significant drops in the time course of the self-efficacy of each user. It is interesting to note, that the use of a powered wheelchair increased self-efficacy, when compared to its former value during the time without DMD and that the user did not begin using a new wheelchair until they had lost much of their self-efficacy.

In this study, a new assistive technology (AT) outcome measurement scale R-MATE (Retrospective Measurement of Assistive Technology Outcome) was developed and applied to the use of a personal computer as a writing tool for people with disabilities. R-MATE asks the user to evaluate their own skills and abilities, e.g. their self-efficacy and competency, in a retrospective manner bearing in mind their personal environment, tasks undertaken as part of their life events and introduction to assistive technology. Self-efficacy for writing was measured using R-MATE with thirteen patients who had Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). The result showed that AT introduction increased the user's self-efficacy although it varied among the individuals and their life phases.

     View Summary

A new communication tool called the electronic personal profiler has been developed, which is intended to enable care staff to obtain multimedia care information using a cell phone, and the potential of the use of the system was investigated. Comments on the prototype were collected from care staff at three nursery homes for elderly people and a residential institution for people with disabilities. While the staff accepted the benefit of multimedia information which the latest cell phone technology incorporates, some of them were reluctant to use the system due to their unfamiliarity in the use of a cell phone. A qualitative study was also conducted at a special school for children with intellectual disabilities. University student trainees were asked to support students at the school after reading care/support information of each student on the cell phone-based system. The results of the experiment suggested that the system increased the comfort of trainees in helping their students. These young trainees showed no major difficulty or hesitation in using the cell phones and navigating the system.

A positive aspect of aiming for universal design is that solutions developed for people with particular needs can prove of benefit to all users. Such a case is described here. A prototype augmentative communication system has been developed which could give non-speaking people a multilingual capability. It is based on research into conversational modelling and utterance prediction, making use of prestored material. In fact, the system could also be used by people whose only communication disadvantage is not being able to speak a foreign language. A unique feature of the system is that both the non-speaking person and the communication partner will use this communicator in their dialogue. In comparison with a multi-lingual phrase book, the system helped the users to have more natural conversation, and to take more control of the interaction.

     View Summary

Beneficial features of boron multiple delta doping (MDD) in synthetic diamond thin films are studied analytically and compared with MDD in GaAs. In spite of a deep boron level (approximately 0.3 eV), MDD greatly helps the thermal excitation of holes via elevation of the Fermi level toward the acceptor boron level. Thus, a hole excitation 6-7 times higher than that of the uniformly doped one is obtained. Furthermore, more than 90% of holes are in the spacer layer (i-diamond) where the mobility is high, resulting in a film conductance of the MDD structure more than 20 times higher than that of the conventional one when the same amount of boron is uniformly doped.

    M IWABUCHI, T KOBAYASHI

    JOURNAL OF APPLIED PHYSICS   75 ( 10 ) 5295 - 5301  1994.05

     View Summary

Epitaxial SrTiO3 (STO) thin films were grown successfully by rf reactive magnetron sputtering on (111)Pt/(100)MgO substrates. At present, the dielectric constant of the STO film (110 nm thick) has reached 370espilon0at room temperature. Despite the general difficulty of obtaining a high dielectric constant for the ultrathin STO films, a fairly thin STO film of 39 nm showed a large value of 240epsilon0. The existence of an STO degraded layer at the interface was suggested by the Fourier transform infrared spectrum observed for the ultrathin STO film of 3.5 nm. The interfacial layer with poor quality diminishes the mean dielectric constant of the STO thin films. This interfacial layer effect offers an explanation for the difficulty in obtaining a high dielectric constant of the ultrathin STO films. Moreover, the band diagram of a Cr/STO/Pt metal-insulator-other metal structure is discussed. Compared to the experimental results, a space-charge-free band diagram was concluded to be appropriate and was consistent with the observed Schottky-like leakage current and the inverse proportionality of the capacitance and the STO thickness.

An innovative technique using a shadow mask placed between the target and the substrate to reduce particles and/or droplets unique to excimer laser deposition was proposed . In the simple technique tentatively called the ''eclipse method'', the deposition process proceeds with ablated species which are diffused with the assistance of the ambient gas. Even when we used pressed-powder targets, mirrorlike SrTiO3 films deposited by the method showed large improvement in the primitive but intrinsic problem of leakage current due to many pinholes. In addition, the dielectric properties were examined from the electrical point of view.

We present the first report of observation of photoinduced and electron-beam-induced short-circuit currents across the Al/(100)SrTiO3/(001)YBa2Cu3Oy metal-insulator-superconductor (MIS) structure in the normal state. Observed current flow is an indication of downward band bending of the YBa2Cu3Oy surface layer at the MIS interface, in accordance with the prediction by Hirano et al. based on its large work-function value (Jpn. J. Appl. Phys. 31 (1992) L1345). The electron-beam-induced current (EBIC) image revealed structural defects at the interface. From this image, diffusion length in the (001)YBa2Cu3Oy layer was roughly estimated as 0.1 approximately 0.2 mum.

Assistive technology service (ATS) is essential for adapting assistive devices to the individual needs of users with disabilities. However, ATS often depends on the empirical knowledge and experience-based skills of individuals or the regional community. The issues of production or remodeling are significantly related to these problems. In this study, collaborative ATS was proposed to facilitate provision of assistive devices.
For the purpose of facilitating, the Support System for Assistive Technology (SS-AT, http://ss4at.nanalabo.co), an online database of assistive devices produced using a 3D printer, was created with a cloud database. training programs to learn effective use of 3D printing technology for assistive technology service were also planned, and then conducted experimental workshops.
As the result, we obtained new knowledge involved processes of community- based ATS in cooperation and collaboration with distant regional communities using digital fabrication.

Various disturbances of visual space recognition include unilateral spatial neglect (USN) has been strongly associated with an increased risk for injury and with poor functional outcome. To quantitatively evaluate visual spatial impairment in cerebrovascular disease patients, we developed a new measurement system able to present a versatile visual information. The results suggested that our new head mounted display (HMD) system has a possibility that the spatial neglect disorder clarify a significant symptom of USN that has not been found out by a common examination on two-dimensional paper in a three-dimensional space. In addition, we have developed a 3D-HMD system with small position sensors which have found the possibility of supporting gait and activities of daily living (ADLs) for patients with visual spatial cognitive impairment as an assistive device.

The issues of production or remodeling are significantly related to these problems.
In this study, we attempted to apply 3D printing technology to some actual cases, and proposed its effective applications and a collaborative database. A prototype of the database was developed that can share the digital data and information about the technique and knowledge of providing assistive devices to the users. The digitized shapes were also designed by a parametric approach. It is possible to redesign the shapes of the device by modifying its parameters. This database has a good potential to increase the level of assistive technology service in both local production and collaboration between distant regional communities.

This study pursued an economical method to create a text-to-speech (TTS) software for a new language using an existing voice synthesizer. The new sound conversion rules were created with manually edited letter-to-sound rules by native speakers for most frequently used words. In order to evaluate the method, Japanese and Nepali TTS systems were created using Hindi TTS that was commercially available. The created Nepali TTS produced well recognized speech with 60-80 percent accuracy. Meanwhile the created Japanese TTS produced speech that was recognized with less than 30 percent accuracy. It was concluded that the method of this study could be usable for a language pair where the original and target minority language are phonetically and linguistically close. However there would still be challenges about language-specific issues, such as prosodic modeling, unknown words pronunciation, and grammatical analysis.

     View Summary

We are conducting research on “automated audio description (AAD)” which automatically generates audio descriptions from real-time competition data for visually impaired people to enjoy live sports programs. However, there is a problem that AAD overlaps with the live television commentary voice, making it difficult to hear each other’s comment. In this paper, first, we show that the game situation is conveyed effectively when visually impaired persons listen to the AAD alone. Then we state the results of experiments on the following items to solve the overlap issue: (1) There is a difference in optimum volume level between live commentary and AAD, (2) The ease of listening differs depending on the difference in the characteristics of text-to-speech synthesizer for AAD, (3) Playing back AAD through a speaker placed differently from the TV speaker makes both voice sounds easier to listen to. We had clues to solve that depending on the presentation method of AAD, we can make AAD easy to listen to even when AAD overlaps the live television commentary.

     View Summary

This project illustrates the way in which systems developed for people with severe disabilities can often have more general applications. A computer-based communication system has been developed which could give non-speaking people a multi-lingual capability. It is based on research into conversational modelling and utterance prediction, making use of prestored material. The system can also be used by people whose only communication disadvantage is not being able to speak a foreign language. In comparison with a multi-lingual phrase book, the system helped users to have more natural conversation, and to take more control of the interaction.

  • 重度・重複障害児の随意性を捉えるための日常観察技術および確率論的評価手法の開発

    2018   岡崎善朗, 中邑賢龍, 武長龍樹

     View Summary

     重度・重複障害児の視覚・聴覚・触覚の刺激に対する反応を記録・分析するための新たな手法の構築を目指し,わずかな動きの変化をカメラで捉えて可視化する技術OAK(Observation and Access with Kinect:オーク)をベースに,刺激を自動提示しながら子ども達の反応の変化を捉える観察技術を開発した。
