    The paper intends to survey foreign images among some famous historical sources as Shomonki 将門記, Shasekishu 沙石集, Jin’noshotoki 神皇正統記, the documents of Hounji temple 法雲寺文書, Todatsuchihokiko 東韃地方紀行, and Teiseizoyaku Sairanigen 訂正増訳采覧異言. Although all of these texts were not written in Ibaraki region, they inclued typical foreign images in each period from Heian 平安to Edo 江戸. The change of the images will be clear through the textual analysis of them.

    San Pedro Bautista (1544-97) was a Franciscan monk who was crucifi ed in Nagasaki in 1597. He was sent as an ambassador to Japan in 1593 by the governor of the Philippines, D. Gómes Pérez das Mariñas (1539-93), in order to resolve a difficult negotiation with Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1536-98). According to the catalogue compiled by Robert Streit, Bibloitheca Missionum 4 (Freiburg: Herder, 1964), there are 32 extant letters from Bautista. The data of these letters is included in table form of this article.
    After his audience with Hideyoshi at Nagoya, Bautista travelled first to Kyoto and then to Nagasaki. His letters reported the progress of his negotiations and were sent primarily to the governor of the Philippines.
    This paper focus on his suggestions concerning limited trade between Japan and the Philippines, which later developed into the Shuinsen commercial system. His suggestions can be divided into three.
    The first concerned the identifi cation of Japanese ships going to the Philippines in order to avoid pirate attacks. According to a chronicle, Bautista suggested that Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who he described as the Japanese emperor, should prohibit piracy and smuggling. To demonstrate that a ship was engaged in legitimate trade, the emperor should give it a permit that had been stamped and signed. The second suggestion related to permission for ships which were sailing to the Philippines to export wheat and other goods. The third suggestion concerned protection for Spanish ships and their cargo that had been shipwrecked. In response to this point, Hideyoshi replied that anyone who might come to Japan from Philippines should arrive unharmed. When the San Felipe was stranded at Tosa, Bautista asked for protection for the ship, crew and cargo based on this reply.
    In his important study, Iwao Seiichi argued that Bautista’s first suggestion marked the origin of the shuinjo, specialized licenses issued for trade. Although the exact format of the document is not clear, his first suggestion does relate closely to the Shuinsen trade system as 46 both compelled ship crews to hold identifi cation documents in order to avoid pirate attacks. Therefore this paper concludes that Bauista’s first suggestion did provide a model for the shuinsen trade system.

    日本におけるキリスト教布教史の一問題に、ザビエルとの会見以来キリスト教に好意的だったとされる大友義鎮が、なぜ天正６年（１５７８）にいたるまで入信しなかったのか、というものがある。フェルナン・メンデス・ピント『東洋遍歴記』によって、この問題にどの程度肉迫できるか。本講演では大胆に仮説めいた議論を展開してみたい。 筆者メンデス・ピントは、１６世紀初頭のポルトガルに生まれ、一定程度の教育を受け、１５３７年から１５５８年までアジアに滞在、そののち、ポルトガルへ帰り、『東洋遍歴記』を執筆、１５８３年に没している。この書は、その信憑性が疑問視される一方で、すべてが虚飾ではないこともまたしばしば指摘される。 メンデス・ピントは最後の来日時に、インド副王アフォンソ・デ・ノローニャの大使としての任を帯びていた。インドを発して、マラッカ、上川を経て日本へ至るまでの行程は、他の宣教師たちによる書簡類にもみえる一方で、日本へ到着し、豊後滞在中の動向は書簡類には詳述されていない。他方、『東洋遍歴記』は、その末尾に近い第２２３章から第２２５章の実に３章にわたって豊後滞在について述べている。 豊後滞在は、単にメンデス・ピントと日本を結びつける接点であるばかりではない。彼は豊後から帰還直後にイエズス会を脱会し、ポルトガルへ戻ってしまう。その理由については、諸史料は明示せず、研究史上の謎とされている。とはいえ、前後関係から豊後滞在中のなんらかの出来事が重大な影響を有していると考えて不自然はあるまい。書簡類に記載がないことは、むしろこの点を傍証しているようにも捕えうる。冒頭に述べた義鎮の入信との関係も、こうした文脈のなかで理解できないだろうか。 本講演では、メンデス・ピントの豊後滞在に関する諸史料を比較し、さらに周辺情報を補足することで、可能な範囲でこの問題に肉迫し、虚実入り混じる『東洋遍歴記』の味わいを探ってみたい。

    Kokusen’ya kassen国性爺合戦 is a playbook for jōruri浄瑠璃, or puppet show played in Takemoto za theater 竹本座, Osaka, 1715 for the first time. The protagonist is ZHENG Chenggong 鄭成功 (1624-1662), who was also called Koxinja国姓爺. This presentation intends to consider the views on foreign countries seen in the playbook from viewpoint of comparison with Chinese historical sources. The image has sometimes been understood as an expression of nationalism. However is it impossible to rethink this understanding with reading the text more concretely? I would like to look up and share the new image how the Japanese comprehended the contemporary dynamist in the East Asian region.

    天正遣欧使節は、日本の出身者でありながら１６世紀のヨーロッパを訪れ、じつはその任をインドで終えた、伊東マンショを中心とした一団である。彼らがはじめてヨーロッパを訪れた日本人であるとの説明があるが、事実ではない。彼らの歴史的意義ははじめてであることではなく、日欧文化の対話の記録をヨーロッパにとどめたことにあるだろう。また、彼らが持ち帰った知識は、当時の日本に若干の影響を与えるとともに、明治以降に南蛮ブームを引き起こすことになる。また、その記憶は禁教の時を経て、各地域の関心を醸成することになる。限られた時間ではあるが、天正遣欧使節のグローバルな側面とローカルな側面を具体的な素材に即して概観し、日本史と世界史の接続について考えてみたい。

    天正遣欧使節は、天正一〇年正月二八日（一五八二年二月二〇日）に長崎を出発し、マカオ、ゴア、セントヘレナ、リスボン、マドリードなどを経て、ローマに至り、天正一八年六月一七日（一五九〇年七月一八日）にふたたび長崎の地を踏んだ使節である。巷にあふれる解説のなかには、彼らヨーロッパを訪れた最初の日本人と位置づけるむきもあるが、事実とは異なる。使節一行に先立つこと約三〇年、ベルナルドと名づけられた日本人がローマの地を踏んでいるし、名も知れぬ奴隷たちがヨーロッパへ輸送されていたからである。 それでは、天正遣欧使節の意義はどこにあるだろうかと考えてみると、昨年刊行された拙著では「数百年来の日欧における情報蓄積の歴史に浮かぶ浮島」と位置づけてみた。彼らは最初にヨーロッパを訪れた日本人ではないが、ヨーロッパ貴族や聖職者たちと対話をし、その記録が詳細に現在に伝えられた日本人としては、最古の例とみなして差支えない。講演の前半では、彼らがヨーロッパに遺した足跡を、日欧文化交流の様子を伝える史料をひもときながらたどることにしたい。 他方、彼らが帰国した日本では、すでに豊臣秀吉による伴天連追放令が出されており、キリシタンたちをめぐる環境は厳しさを増していく。天正遣欧使節がふたたび日本で注目されるようになるのは、明治になり岩倉使節団がヴェネツィアを訪れて以降のことである。彼らは同地の現在国立文書館とよばれている施設で、天正・慶長両遣欧使節に関係する古文書を見学し、教会で碑文に接する。この訪問を契機にイタリアと日本で研究が進められていく。明治から昭和初期にかけて、東京と京都で研究が深化し、ヴェネツィアやポルトガルを訪れる日本人が散見するようになる。そのひとりが西村天囚である。講演の後半では、明治時代に使節一行の存在が再発見されていく過程をふりかえる。

    Japan in the 16th century was a place where many missions arrived from foreign countries and many Japanese missions departed to other countries. In the first half of the 16th century, tributary missions were sent from Japan to Beijing. They attended to the ceremony of audience in the Imperial palace. Missions to Seoul, whose senders are unknown, had sometimes recorded their experiences. Above all, the audience between the Pope of Rome, Gregorio XIII and the king of Spain, Felipe II, and the first Japanese mission sent to Rome lent the period a gorgeous topic. When the Japanese mission to Rome went back to Japan, the Viceroy of India sent a mission together with them. That mission had an audience with Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The Spanish governor in Manila also sent missions to Hideyoshi. During the Korean invasions, Ming China and Chosǒn Korea intended to negotiate with Hideyoshi through diplomatic missions. In the previous research, such missions were analyzed separately. This presentation attempts, however, to collect the examples of foreign missions and classify them from the viewpoint of the purpose of their sending, the places of audience and the ceremony. The sixteenth century was obviously a turning point of interregional relations centering Japan. The conditions for a new regional order in the early modern period will be clarified through the analysis of them.

    中世日本の交渉範囲は、継続的には中国大陸、朝鮮半島、琉球、１６世紀半ば以降はイベリア両国、さらには偶発的にはインドネシアも含まれる。とはいえ、必ずしも広大とはいえない。しかしながら、同時期の日本人が訪れ、または訪れることなく、語り、描いた外部地域の範囲は、もう少し広い。たとえば、中国を訪れた僧は、ムスリム商人との筆談を経て、ペルシャ語詩文を入手し、玄奘三蔵の情報が日本へ流入した結果、未知なるシルクロードやインドが具体的に描かれる。その媒体もさまざまで、文学、絵画、旅行記などに大別できる。本報告では、これらの具体例を概観し、それらの虚実の交錯をひもとき、さらには可能な限りの体系化を試みることで、中世日本人の外国観を総括する。

    岩倉使節がヴェネツィアを訪問して以来、日本における天正遣欧使節研究が本格化する。現在までに多くの刊行物が公にされ、国内外を問わず、一大情報群を形成している。その多くは一行の旅程や具体的史料の紹介などであり、彼らの渡航の意義を必ずしも念頭においてはいない。ヨーロッパを訪れた最初の日本人と位置づけるむきもあるが、事実とは異なる。 使節一行に先立っこと約30年、ベルナルドと名づけられた日本人がローマの地を踏んでいるし、名も知れぬ奴隷たちがヨーロッパへ輸送された。しかしながら、彼らは彼の地でどのように生きたかは明らかではないばかりか、帰国してその見聞を持ち帰ることもなかった。天正遣欧使節は、記録に残り、かつ帰国している点で、先行する彼らとは本質的に性格と異にしている。本講演では、彼らを、ヨーロッパで文化交流の記録を残して帰国したはじめての日本人と位置づけ、その具体像を探る。

    The first contact by the European, which was probably the Portuguese merchant, to the Japanese archipelago in the middle of the sixteenth century attracts many researchers inside and outside Japan. A Portuguese captain, António Galvão (1490-1557) described his image of the approach of the Portuguese merchants to Japanese waters. Three Portuguese saw an island in thirty two degrees during their drifting. Galvão explained that the island was one of "os Japões," or the Japanese archipelago. The year of their navigation was 1542. On the other hand, a Japanese zen monk, Bunshi Genshō (1555-1620) recorded a similar but different story. A great ship was discovered at a village of Southern Tanegashima. An elderly person of the village communicated with the Chinese captain in writing, and understood that the crew included "Sei-nanban," which means probably Portuguese, merchants. The year of their conversation was 1543. Despite of many other sources related to this topic, they have to be cut in this small presentation to simplify the argument. How should we consider these similar but different texts? Some researchers discuss that they express the same navigation, stressing similarities. However can we ignore some differences among two texts? They are extremely essential, for instance the year of arrival, the place. Besides them, Galvão did not mention their landing the island in the thirty two degrees. The main topic of Bunshi's record is gun introduction. The text includes their landing Tanegashima and stay. In a word, it will be more appropriate to understand that these two navigations are completely different. I would like to reconsider the concrete image of the first encounter between the Portuguese and the Japanese with these texts and issues, because it is a landmark to think about the change from medieval period to early modern.

    The middle of the sixteenth century was a turning point in the interregional relations centering on Japan. Needless to say, it was the time of the well-known wokou-activities. Further, around this time official contact between Japan and Ming China was terminated after the last Japanese tribute envoys returned to Japan in 1550. Although the ‘King of Japan’ had nominally continued to dispatch his envoys to the King of Korea, it was substantially carried out by the Sō family of Tsushima island. Outside Japan maritime ban system had been held around this period in Choseon Korea, Ryūkyū Kingdom, as well as in the Ming China which had great influence on the relationship with other countries. This maritime ban system, especially that of the Chinese empire legally meant that leaving the country was prohibited for costal inhabitants. At the same time, historical sources also prove that the entry to the empire was also strictly controlled. In this context the Ryūkyū Kingdom is also often mentioned as an “ocean state” with extensive trade relations as Ryūkyū had frequently sent ships to China, Japan, Korea and other Southeast Asian regions. However, on the other hand it did rigidly prohibit emigration of Ryukyuan people and also restricted the entry of foreign trade ships; a fact which is overlooked in previous research. Thus, this paper aims at focusing on the maritime ban system of Ryūkyū and that of Korea as first. Now, if we look at Japan, we can see that it didn’t establish this kind of ban-system. There is no example whether a similar system existed in Japan, but we know from the sources that no one from those seventeen ships that arrived from outside of Japan in the first half of the sixteen century were banned because of this reason. What was the reason for that? As another core question I would like to examine the situation in the 16th century Japan as well.

    ルソン壺とは、織豊期を中心に日本へ輸入された褐釉四耳壺であり、史料上は真壺などと表記される。その交易の様子は、フランチェスコ・カルレッティ『世界旅行記』や『組屋文書』など、日欧双方に記録されている。その数は決して多くはないが、豊臣秀吉が集中的に購入する様子や、その金額、壺の用途などが具体的に記されている。研究史をひもとくと、ルソン壺は単に一交易品たるにとどまらず、日比通交交渉上も大きな要因とされていたことが指摘されている。 こうした文献上の諸問題を整理し、日比関係におけるルソン壺の役割を明確化することで、考古学における知的蓄積との対話の場を提供したい。

    天正・慶長遣欧両使節は、日本史にいう中近世移行期に、日本人がローマを最終目的地として派遣された計画である点において共通し、その行程および関係史料の研究、出版物等は枚挙にいとまがない。他方、これら、とりわけ前者を分析的な研究対象としたものはほとんど存在しない。 そこで本報告では、両使節をヨーロッパにおける日欧人の直接対話の最初期の事例としてとらえ、ヨーロッパの日本認識にどのような変化をもたらしたのかを考察したい。これらの機会には、日本人も旅の記録を残したことがしられているが、散逸等により詳細は定かではない。 以上を前提に、日欧の直接関係が成立する以前のヨーロッパにおける日本情報を比較材料として、使節たちがもたらした情報が、同時期のヨーロッパ情報にどのような影響を与えたについて検討していく。

    The early Catholic missionary work in Japan between the late sixteenth and the early seventeenth century created, by the means of great effort, the conditions for the dispatch of two Japanese missions to Rome. The first one was prepared by the Jesuit Alessandro Valignano, while Date Masamune, a daimyo of the Sendai region, and the Franciscan Luis Sotelo were dispatched in the second mission. According to the available historical sources, it is confirmed that some Japanese people had stayed in Europe already before these two visits. However, these missions were indeed the first official contacts with Rome and other European regions. Through the textual practices triggered by these missions, many within the European elite acquired knowledge about the habits, geography, and true state of the missionary work in Japan. In this sense, these were indeed the first cultural conversations between Japan and Europe. Unfortunately, only a few sources about these missions are today available in Japan. The Christian persecutions by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the Tokugawa shogunate are considered the main causes of this sorry condition. Nonetheless, some sources written in later period by early modern Japanese scholars of Western studies are still available and represent a precious tool to understand how Europe was perceived by the Japanese and which textual practices were enacted to undertake such a representation. The main purpose of this paper is to understand these two Japanese missions from the perspective of a cultural and textual conversation between Japan and Europe, devoting special attention to compare the first and the second mission.

    1540年代前半にポルトガル人が来日し、継続的な日欧関係が始まる。1571年のマニラ市建設以降、マニラ＝アカプルコ間にガレオン貿易が確立し、交易品の調達・売却のためアジア域内交易が行われた。支倉遣欧使節団はスペインの強い影響下にあったフランシスコ会の関与により派遣され、その往復行程はこうした環境に規定されていた。他方、マニラ市建設以前のフィリピンにおそらく倭寇だと思われる日本人、中国人がしばしば来航、居住し、同地の首長が彼らと交易をしていた。また、豊臣秀吉へ派遣された最初のフィリピンからの大使フアン・コーボはペルー出身であり、この前後にリマやメキシコに日本人自由民や奴隷がいたことも近年の研究で明らかにされつつある。支倉遣欧使節団の派遣を可能たらしめた国際環境について概観したい。

    My recent principal interest is trade between Japan and East and Southeast Asian regions in the later half of sixteenth century. In the seventeenth century, we can image extensive trade exchanges from East Asia to Southeast Asia easily. Japanese Shuinsen, trade ships sent from Japan, had been to Southeast Asian towns to trade, bringing the permission of Tokugawa Shogunate. After efforts and negotiations of central authorities around the end of sixteenth century, trade system got systematized in spite of following movements. Wokou, pirate groups consisted of several ethnicities, was still active in circum China sea region, and the Society of Jesus had kept their network centering Macau even after the Edict against Christianity in Japan. The Spanish governor in Manila had sometimes planned to trade with Japan or others in this region. However the state in sixteenth century is more complicated. The Chinese maritime bans system had been in force. In the first half of sixteenth century, Portuguese ambassador was rejected to begin public commercial relations with the Chinese court. Japanese tributary envoys had sometimes been unable to get access to the imperial capital because of their regulation for the tributaries. Ryukyu had driven wokou from their territory, and the Jesuit Luis Frois wrote that people in Korean peninsula had killed the crew of a Portuguese ship. Although Frois concluded that it was because they were barbarous, it does not express the essence of this incident. Obviously for some reasons, it happened because of the maritime bans system of this period. Then, how was this contradiction, between the exchanges and maritime bans, solved? Strictly speaking, the regional exchanges themselves were not axiomatic in this period. The answer to this quite complicated contradiction will be given by focusing on Chinese islands and Japan in the middle of sixteenth century. Especially Chinese islands will be a subject comparison with Portuguese ports in Indian ocean.

    To survey the relations between piracy and trade in circum China sea region is a complicated issue. It requires multiple perspectives in many senses. We need understand both of official and unofficial relations, before and after the great changes around the 17th century, and each countries China, Korea, Ryukyu, sometimes Taiwan, Philippines and Japan. I do not think that I can give suitable conclusion in this occasion. However it can be a suggestion to consider like following. According to my understanding, the reason why the latter term wokou arose in 16th century was the decline of tributary system of Ming China. Violent incidents by Japanese envoy to Ming China had gotten remarkable since the latter half of 15th century. At least, Siamese envoy was warned by Chinese court on their violence, too. Concerning Ming Japan relation, it followed greater incident called Ningbo no ran, or envoy’s violence in Ningbo. Thus official relations and unofficial one had linked each other. Tributary envoys themselves included the element of violence. In latter period, we can find even one similar to pirate ships. From the latter half of 16th century to the former half of 17th century, quietening down wokou activity, including Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s invasion to Korean peninsula, was a top priority issue of each government. Tokugawa shogunate established their so called Japan centered order with prohibiting piracy. Ming and Qing China had watched sea powers carefully and changed their policy. Chosun dynasty had kept contact with China and prepared their guard for wokou. As proceeding researches have clarified, the Japanese centered order had permitted trade in four points. Smuggling trade had been continued, too. I suppose that the profits could repress piracy indirectly, because one of the main causes of piracy can be poverty. In other words, the profits might be brought to sterile area. This point of view will provide a presupposition to consider what we might call the peace in the 18-9th .century circum China sea region.

    Until the 16th century, it was too difficult to shuttle between Japan and Southeast Asia directly, as Francisco Xavier reported. Before 17th century-Shuinsen trade, the existence of relay points was an essential condition to hold maritime routes from Southeast Asia to East Asia. It means that considering islands trade in China or the Philippines is not only understanding them, but trying to explain why the circum China sea region network was held in the difficult periods.

    This paper develops new perspectives for exploring the history of the wakô in the sixteenth century. In this period, the term refers to cosmopolitan groups of pirates who, though predominantly Chinese, were based in the Japanese archipelago and sailed between East and Southeast Asia. Scholarship on the wakô remains underdeveloped because of the dominance of state-centered histories. Most studies focus on diplomatic relations between Japan, China, and Korea, and as a result rely almost entirely on Chinese and Korean sources. In contrast research into Japan-Southeast Asian relations uses mainly European sources. To properly understand the activities of these trans-border bands of seafarers who raided and traded extensively in East and Southeast Asia, it is necessary to use both European and Asian sources together. This paper will explore the historical image of the wakô as it appears when European sources, such as Jesuit letters, are read in conjunction with Chinese sources like _Chouhaitubian_. According to Chinese works, the wakô invaded along the Chinese coast from Shandong to Guangdong. However, European sources tell us that these same wakô continued on to the Philippines, the Straits of Melaka, and the Spice Islands. Thus commercial networks that flourished in the seventeenth century were already in use by the wakô a century before. Along these routes the wakô maintained a two-sided character, moving between trade and piracy.

    平成17年度は、前2年間における研究情報の蓄積を前提として、その公表にむけた作業を中心に研究作業をおこなった。
    下記11「研究発表」に記載のほか、スペイン史学会月例会、対外史研究会などにおいて口頭報告をおこなった。12月にはリスボン国立古美術館(Museu Nacional Arte Antiga)における「日本に関するポルトガルシンポジウム(Presenca no Japao)」に出席をし、報告をおこなった。その概要は「研究発表」図書欄に記載の「A Presenca Portuguesano Japao nos seculos XVI e XVII」において英文で公表をしている。
    上記シンポジウム出席のため、ポルトガルに渡航をし、リスボンのトーレ・ド・トンボ国立文書館、ヴィラ・ヴィソーザ(Vila Vicosa)のドン・マヌエル2世図書館において文献調査をおこなった。前者においては香料貿易・初期中葡関係史料の複写、後者においてはイエズス会士書簡の古刊本を閲覧した。このほかミラノにおいても文献調査を予定していたが、調査予定機関がすべて休業中であったため、実施には至らず、関係書籍の購入、ジェノヴァ・パヴィアの踏査に終止した。
    本年度は博士学位申請論文『大航海時代の三国世界』を執筆、提出した。従前から作成を継続してきたアジア関係欧文史料データベースのうち、日本に関係する既刊史料を「日本関係既刊欧文書簡一覧」として末尾に付した。

    2018年8月26日から9月6日におこなわれたヴェネツィアおよびミラノ出張に際しては、関連パンフレットの調査を実施し、複写を入手した。ヴェネツィアでは、8月27日から29日の3日間、マルチャーナ国立図書館（Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana）およびコッレール美術館（Museo Correr）（図書館部門）においてパンフレットの調査をおこない、8月30日、31日の両日はヴェネツィア国立公文書館（Archivio di Stato di Venezia）において天正・慶長両遣欧使節関係の古文書の調査を実施した。同館での調査成果の一部は、論文「近代における天正遣欧使節の再発見」、とりわけ68頁の図版などに反映させた。ミラノでは、9月3日にミラノ国立公文書館（Archivio di Stato di Milano）で天正遣欧使節に関する古文書調査を、ブライデンセ国立図書館（Biblioteca Nazionale Braidense）ではパンフレットの調査をおこなった。9月4日にはトリヴルツィアーナ図書館（Biblioteca Trivulziana）において１件のパンフレットの調査をおこなった。

    2018年7月7日の研究発表「フロイス史料研究事始」（多元文化学会）では、先行研究、あるいはポルトガルなどで刊行された目録などの関係情報を整理し、写本、翻刻、邦訳を対照させる際の問題点を指摘した。2018年8月16日から8月26日におこなわれたリスボン出張に際しては、ルイス・フロイス『日本史』の写本を所蔵するポルトガル国立図書館（Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal）、アジュダ図書館（Biblioteca da Ajuda）、海外領土史文書館（Arquivo Historico Ultramarino）における調査を実施し、複写を入手した。また、ポルトガル国立図書館では、上記のほか２冊の天正遣欧使節に関わるパンフレットを調査し、複写を入手した。論文「フロイス史料研究事始」（『多元文化』８）は、上記の現地調査の内容を踏まえ、リスボン所在の６件の写本と翻刻本、そして邦訳の対応関係を表にして、多くの研究者に理解可能な形式で提示したはじめての成果とすることができた。

    The main purpose of this research was toattend 15th International Conference of the European Association for JapaneseStudies at the New University of Lisbon (30 Aug. – 2 Sep. 2017,) and exchangeopinion about the origin of ‘globalization.’ My topic was ‘Simplifieddiscussion about “Tanegashima”, where is the place of the encounter between thePortuguese and the Japanese,’ in a panel entitled ‘Interconnecting (hi)stories:Reconsidering Japan and Maritime Asia in Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries,’organised by KAWATO Takashi. The ‘the encounter between the Portuguese and theJapanese’ happened in the middle of 1550’s. The Portuguese maritime expansion tothe Orient confronted the final stage with this connection. In this sense, itcan be considered as the origin of ‘globalization.’ However some problems arestill left without solving. Can we really interprete it in this way? How wasthe concrete image of their encounter? As issues for the future, I intended toshare knowldge about this topic.A small literature search at ArquivoNacional Torre do Tombo followed the attendance to the Conference. Althoughthis archives open great amout of document in public on their internet site,some documents about the seedtime of Macao are not yet.

    In a nation-wide (and partly international) cooperation with high-school and university teachers, we aimed at compiling history teachers' (of both high schools and universities) handbooks and teaching materials, and a textbook of world history for liberal arts level. Based on the latest research achievements and situations of high-school and liberal arts educations, we published six data papers including various commentaries and reports, and finally published a textbook of world history entitled "A World History for Citizens". Along with these publications, we undertook joint research and discussions regarding history education with various counterparts such as national and local (Kanagawa, Hokkaido and so forth) organizations of high school teachers, universities and research societies (Fukuoka University, Japan Society for Southeast Asian Studies), local government (Sakai city), and foreign scholars from South Korea, China and the United States for instance.

    Compared with Japanese official embassies to Tang China, there exist only very few studies on Japanese official embassies sent to Ming China during the Muromachi period, i.e. the formative period of traditional culture in Japan, while even basic issues are still not revealed. Therefore, this project aimed to perform fundamental historical research concentrating mainly on the activity of Japanese embassies in Ming China.
    Concretely, in this project we have carefully examined the records and diaries of Buddhist monks who became envoys and compared our findings with the results of fieldworks in China. Further, we have also looked at tributary embassies from other countries and territories to Ming China and compared their activities with that of the Japanese embassies. As a result of this historical-comparative research, we were able to reveal the historical nature of Japanese embassies to Ming China in the context of diplomacy in Pre-modern East Asia.

    This project explored in the Japanese history the activities of tourists who visited big cities(Kyoto and others), and them of people who received tourists in the cities. It alsoinvestigated the depth and breadth of the activities in the social structure of those cities.We mainly revealed through this project (1) those activities in the areas around templesand shrines, (2) newly discovered documents of tourists that showed their activities, and (3)receiving people’s activities by official documents.

    1582年に長崎を発って、ローマ教皇グレゴリオ13世と公式謁見し、ふたたび日本へ帰った伊東マンショ以下4名の概要は、ご存じの方も多いのではないでしょうか。ところが、彼らが派遣されるに至った事情や、後世に及ぼした影響については、どうでしょう。ポルトガルやイタリア諸都市における足跡も、じつは詳細には解明されていません。本講座は、彼らの足跡をたどることで、一種の観光ガイドとなるとともに、天正遣欧使節の意義を俯瞰的に考える機会となることを意図しています。

  • 天正遣欧使節のパンフレット情報収集にむけての基礎的研究

    2018年8月26日から9月6日におこなわれたヴェネツィアおよびミラノ出張に際しては、関連パンフレットの調査を実施し、複写を入手した。ヴェネツィアでは、8月27日から29日の3日間、マルチャーナ国立図書館（Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana）およびコッレール美術館（Museo Correr）（図書館部門）においてパンフレットの調査をおこない、8月30日、31日の両日はヴェネツィア国立公文書館（Archivio di Stato di Venezia）において天正・慶長両遣欧使節関係の古文書の調査を実施した。同館での調査成果の一部は、論文「近代における天正遣欧使節の再発見」、とりわけ68頁の図版などに反映させた。ミラノでは、9月3日にミラノ国立公文書館（Archivio di Stato di Milano）で天正遣欧使節に関する古文書調査を、ブライデンセ国立図書館（Biblioteca Nazionale Braidense）ではパンフレットの調査をおこなった。9月4日にはトリヴルツィアーナ図書館（Biblioteca Trivulziana）において１件のパンフレットの調査をおこなった。

  • 16-17世紀日本に関する南欧語書籍情報の系統化にむけての研究

    2018年7月7日の研究発表「フロイス史料研究事始」（多元文化学会）では、先行研究、あるいはポルトガルなどで刊行された目録などの関係情報を整理し、写本、翻刻、邦訳を対照させる際の問題点を指摘した。2018年8月16日から8月26日におこなわれたリスボン出張に際しては、ルイス・フロイス『日本史』の写本を所蔵するポルトガル国立図書館（Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal）、アジュダ図書館（Biblioteca da Ajuda）、海外領土史文書館（Arquivo Historico Ultramarino）における調査を実施し、複写を入手した。また、ポルトガル国立図書館では、上記のほか２冊の天正遣欧使節に関わるパンフレットを調査し、複写を入手した。論文「フロイス史料研究事始」（『多元文化』８）は、上記の現地調査の内容を踏まえ、リスボン所在の６件の写本と翻刻本、そして邦訳の対応関係を表にして、多くの研究者に理解可能な形式で提示したはじめての成果とすることができた。

  • グローバリゼーションの史的起源に関する国際的研究

    The main purpose of this research was toattend 15th International Conference of the European Association for JapaneseStudies at the New University of Lisbon (30 Aug. – 2 Sep. 2017,) and exchangeopinion about the origin of ‘globalization.’ My topic was ‘Simplifieddiscussion about “Tanegashima”, where is the place of the encounter between thePortuguese and the Japanese,’ in a panel entitled ‘Interconnecting (hi)stories:Reconsidering Japan and Maritime Asia in Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries,’organised by KAWATO Takashi. The ‘the encounter between the Portuguese and theJapanese’ happened in the middle of 1550’s. The Portuguese maritime expansion tothe Orient confronted the final stage with this connection. In this sense, itcan be considered as the origin of ‘globalization.’ However some problems arestill left without solving. Can we really interprete it in this way? How wasthe concrete image of their encounter? As issues for the future, I intended toshare knowldge about this topic.A small literature search at ArquivoNacional Torre do Tombo followed the attendance to the Conference. Althoughthis archives open great amout of document in public on their internet site,some documents about the seedtime of Macao are not yet.
