    <p>This paper examines the utility of corpora in the composition of questions for large-scale tests. After explaining the present situation of corpus use in the field of language testing, I explain some of the advantages of using corpora in the process of composing questions. Next, in the context of reading comprehension questions, I perform a discriminant analysis of corpus data according the levels of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test, using the reading comprehension texts from the Japanese Language Proficiency Test as learning data, and data from the Balanced Corpus of Contemporary Japanese as evaluation data. Based on this analysis I identify the levels to which the Balanced Corpus data corresponds, and the extent to which such data can be used in the composition of test questions. In conclusion, I also indicate the importance of taking a qualitative approach to analysis that examines concrete examples, in addition to the quantitative approach described above.</p>

    In this article, we introduce the JCASR Project (in progress at NICT), which aims to develop a relatively small Japanese corpus of texts annotated for "semantic frames" and their "frame elements"(aka "semantic roles"), using Multilayered/Multidimensional Semantic Frame Analysis (MSFA; Kuroda and Isahara 2005). MSFA is a framework of semantic annotation/analysis compatible with the Berkeley FrameNet project (Baker et al. 1998; Lowe et al. 1997) that provides a multidimensional description of "contextualized" meanings of words and phrases. After outlining the project, we provide case studies of two sentences (one from a newspaper article and the other of a discourse).

    本研究の目的である日本語学習者が自ら読んで理解できる文法書（参照文法）の開発に関して、当該年度に以下の課題を設定し遂行する予定であった：１) 既存の初級日本語文法解説書を分析し、CEFR（ヨーロッパ言語共通参照枠）の言語能力記述を支える言語材料としての文法項目を整理して参照文法に収録する文法項目を選定し、記述に必要な情報を定める。また、参照文法の中心的な狙いである、似ている文型（類似表現）の提示・記述方法も確定する。２) 参照文法のwebツール制作のための基盤作り。３)国内外報告活動。 １）は予定通り進めることができ、参照文法に収める文法項目を決定し一覧表を作成した。また、個々の文法項目の記述に必要な情報および記述方法も決定した。さらに、文法項目の一覧表からいくつかの文型を選び、研究代表者と分担者で手分けをし、記述をはじめた。２）に関しては、担当予定であった分担者が当該年度の業務ができなくなったため、代わりにwebツール設定について助言をくれる技術者を探し、当初の予定より多少の遅れでwebツールの基盤作りをはじめた。これまでは、webツールに必要なサーバーの設定を行う業者を決め、現在サーバー設定に必要な手続きを進めている（サーバーの設定はまだ行っていない）。また、外部の専門家の助言を得ながら、データ処理に必要なソフトウェアやwebページへの入力方法等について検討しているところである。３）に関しては、サーバー立ち上げの作業が遅れ、十分なデータおよび発表のための材料が揃わなかったため、報告活動は行っていない。

    当初の計画ではDDLの実践授業を進める予定であったが，コロナ禍によって授業形態がオンライン授業と対面授業との間で幾度も変更され，実践方法を見直すなど，当初の計画どおりに進めることができなかった。また，教材の変更もあり，対象とする文法項目も急遽変更を余儀なくされた。そのため，当初計画した実践授業は，オンラインに対応したDDLの方法を模索するものとなった。研究代表者，分担者各々の教育現場の実情に合わせた調査，実践を行った。
    研究代表者は①クラス環境における実践授業と，②クラス活動と無関係の調査，の2つを行った。
    ①実践授業では，グループ活動にDDLを取り入れる方法を模索した。１つめの方法は，自宅学習として機能語用例文データベース「はごろも」を利用して文法項目を調べ，作成した例文の適切性をグループのメンバーと協議する方法である。もう１つは，ジグソー活動を取り入れたもので，グループの中で文法項目の担当を決め，担当者が機能語用例文データベース「はごろも」を確認し，グループ内で他の学習者との協議の中心となる役割を果たすものである。オンライン授業でのグループ活動の方法については，引き続きよりよい方法を目指して行っていく必要がある。②調査協力者を募っての実験調査は，前年度と同様，授業で扱った教材で使われている文法項目についてDDLを取り入れた自律学習によって例文作成をさせ，文法の正確さを分析するとともに，DDLに関する意識調査を行うものである。調査対象の文法項目については，解説動画を作成し，調査後に見せて理解を深めることにした。
    分担者も同様に学習者の減少によって実践授業を行うことができなかったが，少数の学習者に対してDDLを試みることができ，今後の実践の基礎データを得た。
    これらの調査で得られた学習者の例文は，今後機能語用例文データベース「はごろも」に収録していく。

    本研究は計量言語学の方法を用いて、文章の論理性を自動評価するシステムを開発し、公開することを目的とする。2020年度は、文章の論理性のコア要素として、接続表現に関する調査分析を行った。具体的にはこれまでの日本語学の研究成果を取り入れ、接続表現のリストを作成した。そして、接続表現のリストを複数のコーパスを使って、日本語学習者がどのような接続表現を、どれだけ使っているのかについての実態調査を行った。そして、その結果をもとに、75見出しの接続表現を自動抽出する機能を https://jreadability.net/ で実装し、日本語学習者、日本語教育関係者に対するウェブサービスとして提供している。

    本研究は、文章が持つ潜在的な特性であるリーダビリティ値（文章の読みやすさを示す計量的な指標）に基づいて、テスト問題を自動生成するシステムを開発・公開することを目的とするものである。１０名の日本語教師に対して、テキストから試験問題を作成する調査を行った。この調査結果をもとに、初級レベルのテキストに対しては助詞の穴埋め問題を自動生成するシステムを作成した。中級と上級レベルのテキストに対しては副詞や機能表現の穴埋め問題を自動生成するシステムを作成した。すべての研究成果は、https://jreadability.net/sys/ja において実装されており、テキストを張り付ければ、入力テキストの難易度に応じて、テスト問題を自動生成する機能が利用できるようになっている。

    本研究は、韓国語学習者が自分の語学レベルに応じて適切な学習用教材をアダプティブに利用できる韓国語読解教育のための学習支援システム（Kreadability）の開発を行い、近年社会的ニーズが高まっているCLIL（内容言語統合型学習）を柱とする韓国語教育を飛躍的に進展させることを目的とする。
    令和3年度は、令和2年度に引き続き、使用者のニーズを取り入れた使いやすいシステムを改善・改良しながら、kReadabilityシステム(http://asaokitan.net/kreadability)の検証結果を第88回朝鮮語教育学会にて報告した。検証の結果、リーダビリティスコアは検定試験で設定されている初級から高級までの各級に応じてスコアが上昇しており、各級の読解文章とリーダビリティスコアが適切な関係になっていることが分かった。そして新聞、白書、ウェブ演説文との比較においては、それらのテキストのリーダビリティスコアが、韓国語能力検定試験（TOPIK）は中級2.86から高級2.93の間に分布、ハングル能力検定試験は準２級2.25から２級2.86の間に分布していることを明らかにし、実際の韓国社会で使用される文章の難易度と検定試験の難易度の基準を示すことができた。以上のように，各検定試験の結果と，各韓国語のテキストとの比較の結果，妥当なリーダビリティスコアが得られ、kReadabilityのツールの測定精度も適切であることを示すことができた。本結果は、現在朝鮮学会に投稿中である（「kReadabilityを用いた韓国語検定試験の読解文章難易度比較」）。また、kReadabilityの広報活動の一環として、朝鮮語教育学会の第53回第二言語習得論分科会にて、オンラインによるkReadabilityワークショップを実施し、kReadabilityの理解や活用方法などについて意見交換を行った。

    In this project, we have developed a corpus based on the speech responses of a computer-based English speaking test (KIT Speaking Test) administered to all first-year undergraduate students at the Kyoto Institute of Technology. We have named the resource “the KIT Speaking Test Corpus” and made it available on our website (https://kitstcorpus.jp). We have also conducted some fundamental analysis and revealed some of the characteristics of the English ability of learners whose native language is Japanese.

    In this study, we analyzed the factors that determine the quality of an opinion essay from the perspectives of the assessor specialties, writer categories, and essay levels to reveal the characteristics of highly assessed essays, essays whose assessments were mixed, and so on. We also developed an essay-writing rubric and educational materials for essay writing based on the findings obtained from the analysis.
    The developed teaching material focuses on academic style, language expression to enhance cohesiveness, and content and organization to improve persuasiveness. It also includes a rubric developed based on assessment data collected from university faculty. The results of empirical research with opinion essay corpora and evaluation data were utilized in developing materials. These can contribute to the education and learning of Japanese academic writing for international students.

    The project started with the aim of developing a practical and versatile Japanese oral proficiency test. And we were able to develop a model for a face-to-face test. The name of the test we developed is JOPT (Japanese Oral Proficiency Test). A manual for conducting the test and training testers was also developed.     The purpose of this study was to publish a Japanese language learners’ corpus of large quantity and excellent quality, based on data collected from Japanese language learners in 20 different regions of the world. This data was collected and transcribed over the course of 8 years, beginning in 2012, and was published in 5 different segments, each comprised of data from 200 learners.
    As a result of this study, we 1) constructed a corpus named the International Corpus of Japanese as a Second Language (I-JAS) comprised of data collected from 1000 Japanese language learners who are native speakers of 12 different languages, as well as 50 native Japanese speakers; 2) conducted learners’ corpus study group sessions, workshops, and symposiums on a regular basis; and 3) gave presentations in Japan and abroad based on this research, as well as published a book that summarizes the contents of the I-JAS.

The first is a system "jReadability" that automatically determines the readability of sentences for the purpose of reading comprehension, and the second is "jWriter" that automatically determines the ability value of sentences to support composition writing.

    Students learn specialist knowledge in basic nursing education through lectures, exercises, and practical training. Textbooks and specialist books are used in lectures to understand the technical terms. However, in practical training, there is an addition of natural language that develops with the cultural background of a nursing facility for daily communications.
    In this study, we organized the technical terms related to emergency care and constructed a corpus database of emergency nursing care from nursing textbooks, specialized emergency nursing care books, as well as the nursing students’ practical training records that include natural language descriptions.

    GoodWriting Rater, a web-based support tool for Japanese as a second language writing education and evaluation, has been developed by combining human writing performance evaluation with automatic estimation of writing levels using a machine learning approach. When an essay of the “comparison and opinion/argumentation” type is inputted, our system carries out automatic level classification according to the multiple traits of “holistic,” “purpose & content,” “organization & cohesion,” and “Japanese proficiency,” providing detailed analysis of text information and highlighting meta language used within the text. Sample essays of different levels and evaluation flowcharts are available on our website. In addition to supporting writing evaluation and feedback of teachers in Japan and overseas, it will also contribute to establishing a standard of Japanese writing levels.

    This research project aimed to investigate what factors in Japanese opinion essays, written by both Japanese and international students, affect assessment by university teachers. The data was collected from 44 university teachers and consisted of 5-point scale values from holistic scoring and free descriptive comments on both good and/or bad points of the essays. The main findings of the analysis were as follows:
    (1) Regarding the linguistic aspects of the essays, the number of kanji and vocabulary from the latter half of the intermediate level and the first half advanced level used, the application of content words, the overall variety of words, and the number of total characters contributed to evaluating the essays as “good.” (2) The assessors generally focused on assessing work in the following order: 1. content, 2. language, 3. organization, and 4. form, however, this order would change depending on the scale value of the essay and/or the first language of the writer.

    We have improved and revised the grammatical items usage database, HAGOROMO, which was released on the web for domestic and overseas use in order to support Japanese language teachers and over-intermediate-level Japanese learners with respect to five aspects. The purpose of the revision was to make it easier for learners to search for items in order to write sentences that are more useful for communication. The five aspects are thus outlined.
    First, scrutinizing topic words, which makes it easier to search by summarizing items that have been separated by inflection. Second, displaying information about grammar functions. Third, the hierarchy of semantic usages and study of the descriptions. Fourth, displaying information on the form before the topic words; providing information on grammatical form is useful for production. Fifth, displaying examples from learner composition corpus; it indicates correct sentences, error sentences, and the levels of learners.

    This research aimed to investigate factors affecting the acquisition of Sino-Japanese kanji compound words (Wasei-kango) among Japanese language learners, and to construct a new database of Japanese-Chinese contrastive kanji compound words. This is necessary for research into Japanese language acquisition. The new database of 2,078 Japanese kanji compound words was published in March 2017. This database includes both Japanese and Chinese vocabulary properties, such as script, reading, degree of vocabulary difficulty, frequency, orthographical and phonological difference between Japanese and Chinese, meanings and so on. With regard to the acquisition of Wasei-kango, research was conducted with two groups of Chinese native speakers: one group with no experience of learning Japanese and the other with an advanced level of Japanese. The results showed that the difficulty of semantic inferences correlates to the difficulty of acquisition.

    With a goal of providing useful information to support the learning of adolescent learners of Japanese with multilingual backgrounds, we performed a survey of necessary vocabulary items for their courses of study. In regard to science, we analyzed textbooks from the third to sixth grades, had the educators determine the items of greatest importance, and created a chart of crucial vocabulary. Furthermore, we created a diagnostic test centered on the target language (SPOT, Kanji SPOT, and Kanji test), and confirmed the usefulness of the test by performing longitudinal research at an international school, and surveys at a public elementary school.

    Toward the aim to prepare practical and widely-usable Japanese oral proficiency tests in three domains---Academic, Business and Community, we made 15-minute face-to-face trial tests, which are presented with visual prompts and recorded in a tablet PC. Each domain consists of three steps, Step 1 (basic questions common to all domains), Step 2 (description and explanation questions), and Step 3 (opinion questions). Step 1 has 10 questions shared in all domains, Step 2 and 3 have 10 questions each; thus, each domain has 20 questions (plus 10 Step 1 questions). Using the Multi-Facet Rasch Model a pilot study was conducted to examine the difficulty of each problem and the variation of each tester's rating, whose analysis needs a few months to be completed.

    The research presented in this paper aims at advancing text readability studies for Japanese and devises a practical and useful system that contributes to Japanese language teaching, learning, and research. More specifically, utilizing leveled corpora mainly consisting of text from textbooks of Japanese, we produced the following formula to measure the readability level of a given text in six scales: X = {mean length of sentence * -0.056} + {proportion of kango * -0.126} + {proportion of wago * -0.042} + {proportion of number of verbs among all words * -0.145} + {proportion of number of auxiliary verbs * -0.044} + 11.724 (R2=.896) . The formula was tested against another set of leveled text in Japanese to prove its reliability. Lastly, the method was implemented in a computer system that calculates and produces the estimated level of a text via a web-based online interface.

    The aim of this study was (1) to build a learners' corpus of Japanese as a second language qualitatively and quantitatively superior to previous corpora and (2) to conduct acquisition studies focusing on Japanese linguistics and social linguistics with research colleagues.
    During these past four years, (1)'we collected about 1,000 learners' data in 17 countries whose mother tongues are 12 different languages. The data contains classroom and naturalistic environment learners in Japan and also 50 native speakers of Japanese (2)' we analyzed the data and gave presentations at several conferences both domestic and international. With regard to acquisition studies the data revealed planning of time gives a positive influence to produce correct passive form, however it was not effective to correcting errors of intransitive and transitive verbs. Also the role-play data showed the importance of politeness compared to grammatical accuracy in speech communication with upper people.

    We conducted a survey with a large scale English newspaper corpus to see what types of nouns are frequently used for various verbs as their subjects and objects, and defined the patterns of the co-occurring verbs and nouns extracted from the corpus as the grammatical knowledge which learners of English need to acquire to master the use of verbs. We created grammatical exercises for learners which are more natural and consistent with encyclopedic knowledge, by manually editing the examples of such usages taken from the corpus. We also developed a gamelike e-learning system on which learners can interactively do the exercises.

    In order to support the compilation of Japanese language learners’ dictionaries, we have completed a database called ‘a general database for the development of Japanese language learners' dictionaries’. This database consists of 17,920 words selected via researching word frequency and dispersion using the Balanced Corpus of Contemporary Written Japanese (BCCWJ). Each word has readability scale of 6 levels determined by Japanese veteran teachers, the level of the old Japanese Language Proficiency Test, part of speech, word type, and sample sentences (both composed sentences and authentic sentences collected from BCCWJ.)
    Apart from this database, we have completed a collocation list, thesaurus, and a list of short descriptions of cultural discoveries. We have developed a search system for both the database and those lists, and presented the system via internet（http://jreadability.net/jev.）

    The present study developed the rating system for Japanese Language Oral Proficiency Test. In the system, spoken samples of examinees’ speech were accessed through the Internet. Raters could enter the results for each item shown on ascoring table, which was successively indicated on a PC screen. Rating of each rater was relatively consistent for each domain. Quantitative ratings were relatively more consistent among raters than qualitative ratings. However, some raters gave different quantitative ratings from others. The results of multi-faceted Rasch analysis indicated that dispersion of strictness between raters was significant. The estimates on the ability scale were not significantly different from the assumed ability of the 12 speakers.

    This research focuses on sensory adjectives that etymologically derive from sensation and perception, the most primitive bodily experiences, and extend by significantly reflecting the speaker or writer's way of construing the situation. Sensory adjectives semantically change according to human experiences and conceptual structures; these changes in meaning occur through syntactic and constructional transitions, e.g., from adjective through adverb to topicalized element. This study observes how semantic-pragmatic and syntactic aspects interact beyond apparent syntactic categories, and it provides systematic accounts from a cognitive viewpoint to elucidate the relationship between meaning and syntactic construction. The study also shows the validity of the empirical approach adopted here, using panchronic (integration of the synchronic and diachronic approaches), cross-linguistic (comparison between typologically distant languages), and corpus-based (use of large, balanced data) methods.

    目的 : 本研究は大量の日本語コーパスを使って,日本語の文章の読み易さ・読み難さ(リーダビリティー)を数値で表す尺度(スケール)を構築することを目的とする。
    実施状況 : 日本語の様々な読み物を電子ファイル化し,様々な分析に使えるコーパスを作った。そのために10数名の研究補助者を雇い入れ,(1) 小学1年から高校3年までの国語教科書51冊,(2) 日本語能力試験1&2級読解問題(2002年から2006年の5年分), (3) ベストセラーのケータイ小説2作品, (4) 出版部数の多い雑誌(文芸春秋, ESSE, MORE,WITHを各3か月分)をページごとにスキャンし, OCRを使い, コンピュータで使えるよう電子ファイルにした。(1)から(4)までのテキストのほか, すでにCD-Romとなっている「新潮文庫の100冊」「毎日新聞データ集2006年度版」を使い, 形態素解析を行なった。当初,解析にはChaSenを使っていたが, より精度を高めるため, MeCabとIPA辞書に切り替え, ツールの整備を行なった。国語教科書をデータベースとして構築された学年判定式(小学1年から中学3年まで)を用いて, 様々な読み物を測定したところ, 最近人気のあるケータイ小説は小学6年から中学1年レベル, 「星の王子さま」は翻訳者によって, 小学2年から5年レベルにあることがわかった。
    本研究の意義 : 文章の難易を示す尺度が出来たことにより, 様々な文書のレベルを測定できる。例えば, 製品マニュアル, 薬の能書き, 災害マニュアルなどはわかりやすい文章で書かれるべきであるが, そのような文書を作成するための指標ができた。

  • 計算言語学の手法を用いた小中高における教科書の文章難易度に関する調査研究

    小中高における教科書412冊の電子データを，独自に開発したコンピュータシステムでもって文章難易度を調査した。調査の結果を母語・継承語・バイリンガル教育（MHB）学会2019年度研究大会でポスター発表した（李在鎬（2019）「教科書に対する読みやすさの評価 ― jReadability と BCCWJ を用いて―」（立命館大学，2019.8.8））。また，「李在鎬（2019）「BCCWJ の学校教科書コーパスの計量的分析 ―日本語教育のためのリーダビリティと語彙レベルの分布を中心に―，『計量国語学』 32(3) 147 - 162 」で論文として公開した。この結果は，今後，日本語教師が，日本の小中高で外国人児童を指導する際，教科書の難しさを判断する指針になりうるもので，大きな波及効果を持つものと考えている。

  • 日本語学習者のための文章難易度の自動推定に関する基礎研究

    本研究の目的は、生の日本語テキストを日本語教育の読解教育に活かすため、文章の（日本語学習者にとっての）難易度を自動判定するウェブシステムを開発し、普及のためのワークショップを行うことであった。研究成果は、http://jreadability.net/　において一般公開されている。また、研究成果の普及を目的とするワークショップとして、九州大学において、2016.12.16に実施したほか、第27回第二言語習得研究会全国大会において、「単語n-gramに基づく日本語機能表現リストの構築と学習者の作文にみられる文法項目の定量的分析」というポスター発表を行った。そして、『早稲田日本語教育学』において「日本語教育のための文章難易度研究」という論文を公開した。
