    Abstract

Nukadoko, a fermented rice bran employed in traditional Japanese pickling, uses lactic acid bacteria to ferment vegetables. Here, we report the microbial and chemical data of a mixture of matured 150-year-old nukadoko and commercially available rice bran placed in two open environments over 29 days. Across the two environments, Loigolactobacillus was identified as the dominant microbial genera in the later stages of fermentation in nukadoko. The period of increase in the relative abundance of Loigolactobacillus correlated with a decrease in pH and Oxidation–Reduction Potential (ORP) values. While the two environments showed a difference in the rate of change in microbial diversity, they shared the common process through which Loigolactobacillus outcompeted adventitious bacteria in nukadoko, as indicated by the alpha and beta diversity index. Thus, the similarities in microbial and chemical data across two open environments during fermentation using starters indicate that starters contribute to the stability of fermentation in open environments.

    Abstract

The skin microbiome, which varies widely between individuals, plays a crucial role in human health. It also interacts with the environment in various ways, including during the preparation of fermented food. Nukadoko is a pickle and traditional fermented food in Japan that utilizes lactic acid bacteria to ferment vegetables. When preparing or maintaining Nukadoko, it is mixed with bare hands. Despite the known interaction between Nukadoko and human skin, no studies have explored its impact on Nukadoko quality or skin microbiome changes. This study examines these effects during Nukadoko maintenance. Three participants were asked to stir commercially available late-stage Nukadoko for 14 days and not stir it for the remaining 14 days to examine microbial settlement and shedding. Microbiome analysis was performed on human skin and Nukadoko. We found that microorganisms from rice bran beds can temporarily settle on human skin but are shed quickly. Stirring rice bran beds by hand may have short-term effects on the skin microbiome. This study provides insights into the communication between human and food microbiomes in traditional Japanese fermented foods.

  • Analysis and Design of Social Presence in a Computer-Mediated Communication System

    FRONTIERS IN PSYCHOLOGY   12  2021.05

     View Summary

Social presence, or the subjective experience of being present with another existing person, varies with the interaction medium. In general, social presence research has mainly focused on uni-directional aspects of each exchanged message, not on bidirectional interactions. Our primary purpose is to introduce such bidirectional evaluation by quantifying the degree of social presence with a few statistical measures. To this end, we developed a software called "TypeTrace" that records all keystrokes of online chat interactants and reenacts their typing actions and analyzed the results from different chat conditions, mainly focusing on the characterization of bi-directional interactions. We also compared the chat interaction patterns with the patterns from phone call datasets to investigate the difference of live communication in different media. The hypothesis of the experiment was that either richness or concurrency of communication is important for organizing social presence. Richness is defined by the variety of information at a time in communication and the concurrency is the number of temporal thread being processed at the same time. Our results show that when we merely increase the richness of information by presenting the typing process, the cognition of others' presence does not significantly increase. However, when the information concurrency is augmented by introducing the transmission of realtime text, we found that the transfer entropy between the interactants becomes considerably higher, and the social presence and emotional arousal, intimacy increased. High transfer entropy was also observed in the phone call dataset. This result shows that the mere augmentation of information richness does not necessarily lead to increased social presence, and concurrent communication is another critical factor for fostering vivid conversation in digital environments.

We describe the design, implementation and on going evaluation processes of “NukaBot”, a system built to realize Human to Microbe Interaction, aimed to assist production of fermented food. Our system senses, records and analyzes in real time the fermentation process inside a “nukadoko”, a traditional method to produce vegetable pickles in Japan that involves a highly complex network of microbes. The flora of a nukadoko mainly consists of lactic acid bacteria, yeasts and gram-negative bacteria. The novelty of our system lies in providing an intuitive user interface that lets its user chat with a virtual persona attributed to the nukadoko. The NukaBot thus enables non-specialists to discern the complex dynamics of the microbial communities within a nukadoko in daily situations.

While technology has brought immeasurable benefits to humankind, recent advances in artificial intelligence and autonomous systems have also led to new ethical, legal, and social issues. We now face the problem of creating a cooperative society in which autonomous systems and people can coexist. The concept of artificial life provides unique perspectives, tools, and philosophies for furthering our understanding of complex living, lifelike, or hybrid systems. However, artificial life is still difficult to comprehend for those outside the academic community. We thus created a public co-creation community called ALIFE Lab, which aims to increase awareness of artificial life in collaboration with artificial life researchers and talents from creative fields such as design, art, and fashion. As one of the community activities, we organized a workshop-based program in which participants learned about Artificial Life and used it as a tool to conceive autonomous systems with concrete vocabulary and theory. This paper reports the methodology and outcomes of the workshop.

     View Summary

The purpose of this study is to investigate the writing style and revision process ofa contemporary fiction writer from a cognitive science perspective. We focus on the work of Mishima Prize winning author, Otaro Maijo. Using Type Trace, a text editor devised by Dividual Inc., as an analysis tool for observing the writing process, we con-sider features that have not been detected by creative experiment, protocol analysis or manuscript research. Based on observations of Maijo's writing process, firstly revisions are categorized as additions, deletions, substitutions, distributions, or consolidations. Secondly, revisions are further classified as "revisions at a generative point", "revisions in a generative sentence", "revisions in a generative paragraph", or "revisions beyond the generative paragraph", according to the remoteness of the revision from the point of composition. The results reveal that revisions such as the substitution of words and adjustments in sentence length were mostly performed together with text generation. All revisions that were made after an interlude took the form of revisions far removed from sentence generation. We find that Maijo's writing style tends to be maintained for several weeks to months and then changes substantially.

Recently on the Internet, with such phenomena as Consumer Generated Media and mash-ups, various derivative creation services for a diverse range of modalities have appeared. However, even in the midst of massive growth of contents resulting from these derivative creations, individual service providers have not yet started to collaborate beyond corporate borders in order to attain multi-derivative creations. The authors implemented and evaluated the HIVE model that leads to multi-derivative creation through exploitation of digital rights licensing, from the viewpoint of Media Art Archives.

Since the first release of its licenses in 2002, Creative Commons (CC) increasingly expanded its activities, and today there are more than 1.4 billion contents under various CC licenses in over 50 languages worldwide. Over the recent years, methods of exploiting potentials of the licenses and the organizations of related agents have importantly diversified. Today, the initial public image of CC as being modeled "by and for the lawyers" in order to "promote free contents circulation" is dynamically evolving into a more real-world business compatible system. In this paper, we present an overview of the evolution of CC licenses so that to render a possible horizon of the movement, from the point of view of "business model" and "Web 2.0".

The recent proliferation of the so-called Web 2.0 information services can be considered the result of the convergence between the open-source and open-content phenomena. In this paper, we will describe basically how the open-content derived from the open-source movement, and how the Creative Commons is contributing to the spread of this free culture.

In this exhibit, we focus on the microbes around us, in order to jointly consider future lifestyles in which microbes and human beings coexist and prosper.

A massive amount of invisible microbes exist in our surroundings, including bacteria, fungi, viruses and protozoans. A diverse range of microbes inhabit our homes, our schools, and our own bodies as well, and they create their own unique ecosystems while maintaining a perfect balance.

Discover essential information about microbes and the importance of microbes to people, and experience how microbes inhabit our living environments via a full-scale living space and living plants. This exhibit presents ideas for enhancing the diversity of microbes, and hints for lifestyles that make coexisting with microbes possible.

Together, let us consider a vision for an ideal city where human beings coexist with microbes.

The Japan Institute of Design Promotion (JDP) will hold the exhibition "Design Beyond - Design for a New World" from June 16 to July 30 as a pre-event of the WDO World Design Conference Tokyo 2023, which will be held in October this year for the first time in 34 years in Japan under the secretariat of the JDP. Design Beyond - Design for a New World" will be held from June 16 (Friday) to July 30 (Sunday).

This exhibition will be held in anticipation of the "WDO World Design Conference Tokyo 2023," and is aimed at those who are thinking about the future of society beyond the specialized fields of design, and will focus on the overall theme of the conference, "Design Beyond," and the four themes scheduled for discussion at the conference: "Humanity," "Planet," "Technology," and "Design for a New World. Planet," "Technology," and "Policy.

At the exhibition, the design departments of the eight Japanese sponsors of the WDO World Design Conference Tokyo 2023, as well as nine speakers from various fields and three related organizations who will be speaking at the conference's international conference, will introduce examples of design initiatives related to their respective themes.

What kind of future can design bring to our daily lives, industry, and society? The conference will provide an opportunity to explore the role and possibilities of design in opening up a "new world" from a variety of perspectives.

    YOLO:you only live once,

In the Future, How Shall We Live?

In futures projected at different time scales: whether 10,000 years hence or one second from now, will we remain who we are? Are we represented by corporeal memories constructed in physical space, or by our digital behaviors captured in the block chain? Are standards of “living” determined through the consciousness of the organism itself, or by the levels indicated in mechanical data. Are that which human beings consider to be social systems, actually just a world inside a petri dish cultivated by another species? This ostensibly boundless and unfettered topic of “the future” is mired in foreshadowing in every direction, dragging or leading us in progression or retreat.

In the face of an uncertain global future, LIVES - the 5th anniversary exhibition of the Jut Art Museum, attempts to re-contemplate and interrogate the most fundamental yet radical issues of “life,” “survival,” and “living.”

The theme and structure of the LIVES exhibition originated from a series of regular research meetings held by the museum team from 2019. Crystalized after internal team discussion, the theme for the exhibition LIVES amalgamates multiple interpretations of the plural form of the noun “life” and the verb “to live,” and invites curators Escher Tsai and Amy Cheng to co-curate the exhibition, with Ming-Tsung Lee, Kuang-Chi Hung, and Lu-Lin (Jerry) Cheng to serve as curatorial advisors; all participants in dialogs and discussions that lasted over a year. Our collective origin and path as we look toward the future is explored through interdisciplinary conversations and contemplation in a contemporaneity where technology and culture intersect.

A total of 12 artists and teams from Germany, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Taiwan have been invited to participate in the current exhibition. Curators Escher Tsai and Amy Cheng focus on the possibilities of various lifeforms, on the philosophies and ethics of survival, as well as on technological development and modes of living. They explore the social construction and forms of survival from both cultural and biological perspectives, encompassing the relationships between human beings and nature, and between information and consciousness.

The future may already be upon us. Over the course of the preparatory process for this exhibition, spanning the years from 2019 to 2022, COVID-19 has accelerated various rehearsals and drills for the future, compelling us to gaze intently at the vulnerability and resilience of life. We have long departed from previously established rules of survival and modes of living. Even so, we will make an attempt to invite each one of you currently experiencing the present moment, to cast away established conventions and join us as we embark on this speculative journey regarding the future; on this perpetual inquiry without an answer.

21_21 DESIGN SIGHT holds the exhibition "traNslatioNs - Understanding Misunderstanding" from October 16, 2020. The exhibition director, Dominique Chen, is informatics researcher and has undertaken many interdisciplinary studies of art, design and expressive media internationally.

The word "translation" conjures up the idea of conversion between one language and another, with assorted acts of communication involved in those process. Since ancient times past, translation has been part of daily life as people seek contact with other cultures, and try to understand them. A remarkable evolution has recently come about with translation software, now routine in deployed to enable us to connect each other, "whenever and wherever," beyond all linguistic boundaries. Modes of communication have changed so much that what was once in an unknown world is now familiar.

However, communication using "translation" is not restricted to languages. There are translations where visual or auditory sensations, or bodily expressions, play the role of bridge to transmit and receive communication. The diverse interpretations, conversions and expressions that are generated by all these processes can be said to have much in common with art and design. This exhibition is based on Dominique Chen's idea that "translation is designing communication." We define translation as "the trial processes linking mutually non-comprehending parties from different backgrounds" and use this to explore the possibilities of translation from multiple perspectives.

The venue includes experiential exhibits employing AI-based automatic translation and video work by creole speakers with multiple native languages. There are also instances finding translations by through the body expression, such as sign languages or gestures and communication between humans and other species, even with microorganisms. All the works enquire into the possibility of translation. We hope that through the notion of translation, this exhibition encourages visitors to realize the joy of finding emotions and cultures in "others," and of discovering a world beyond.

Successively displayed on 24 methodically arranged monitors are "10-minute last words" collected via the Internet, while a keyboard on a table in the center of the exhibition automatically inputs the according text without human involvement.
This work is based on the "TypeTrace" software that dividual.inc has been developing since 2006. The software can be used for recording and reproducing entire text input processes via a keyboard, including the timing of typing or erasing letters. The sizes of letters vary depending on the time intervals between the input of single words.
Different from the uniformly sized letters one usually encounters in books or on displays, here the writing person's mindset, with aspects of momentum and hesitation, is vividly reflected in the resulting text. Just like authors' handwritten drafts exhibited at museums for example, or correction marks added in the proofreading process provide information in addition to that of the respective text itself, this work makes the viewer aware of the existence of the writing subjects behind the texts.
The experience of writing one's last words is at once also an opportunity to rearrange one's thoughts toward loved ones, and about one's own past and future. New entries are still frequently uploaded to the special website that was set up in order to collect "10-minute last words" for this exhibition.

It is said that birds are able to form flocks because they act in a 'critical area', where the movements of a single bird are linked in a chain and propagated to the whole group. In this study, we analyzed whether a similar critical phenomenon exists in internet communication systems. The analysis revealed the existence of a critical phenomenon in online communication, which is observed in a critical region with two states of different nature. It was also found that when a group is in a critical state, nodes emerge that behave like 'keystone' species in biological ecosystems. These mechanisms are thought to enhance the metabolism of the group, leading to the sustainability and adaptability of online communication.
