    The purpose of this paper is to solve the simple sentence puzzle about proper names. (1) Superman leaps more tall buildings than Clark Kent. (2) Superman = Clark Kent. (3) Superman leaps more tall buildings than Superman. Even when (1) and (2) are true, (3) is false. It will be shown that this is not a real puzzle, because (i) (1) and (3) do not express singular propositions, and (ii) the identity statement in (2) only concerns singular propositions. In (1) and (3), the proper names refer to aspects of an individual at the level of explicature, while identity statements of the form X = Y mean that Y can be substituted for X salva veritate, only in singular propositions about X /Y. Given this difference in reference between (1)/(3) and (2), the conjunction of (1) and (2) does not entail (3), in accordance with our intuition.

    The purpose of this paper is to show that the linguistic meaning of tautological sentences of the form X is X does not correspond to any propositional content and to propose an analysis based on Contextualism, in particular on Meaning Eliminativism, its most extreme form. On the one hand, the radical-pragmatic assumption, shared even by recent cognitive approaches, that X is X expresses a logical tautology leads to various paradoxes. On the other hand, the radical-semantic view that its interpretations cannot be fully calculated by universal principles suffers from theoretical shortcomings. I will argue that the simple fact that X is X consists of two applications of X to the same object provides the basis for the interpretation of X is X.

    This research has shown that polysemy can arise from different epistemic relations between the speaker and the object or state of affairs. For those who do not know the identity between Superman and Clark Kent, 'Superman leaps more tall buildings than Clark Kent' represents a relation between two individuals, while for those who know the identity it represents a relation between two aspects of one and the same individual. The constative use of 'I name this ship Queen Elizabeth' corresponds to the speaker's reflective construal of the ritual in which the sentence is uttered, while the performative use of the sentence corresponds to the speaker's projective construal. Similar analyses apply to ironical utterances. In many cases, the speaker's different construals of her own speech act are inscribed in the use (as well as the form) of linguistic expressions.

    I constructed a theory on proper names which is compatible with (1) as well as (2). (1) Proper names are given to individuals, i.e. the least abstract entities in the world. Accordingly, the singularity as represented by proper names constitutes a lower-level concept. (2) Only human beings can recognize Superman and Clark Kent as one and the same individual, despite their drastically different properties. Accordingly, the singularity as represented by proper names constitute a higher-level concept. In most cases, individuals are recognized through their properties. In understanding identity statements such as "Superman = Clark Kent", however, we must posit an individual which is defined independently from the properties exhibited by its aspects. This is the source of the ambivalent characterizations of individuals.

    This research showed that the notion of linguistic-independent meaning should be eliminated from the semantics of natural language. The confusion about the notion of homogenization, evoked for the analysis of tautologies of the form X is X, can be dissolved if we do not consider the meaning of the word X to be shared between speakers when X is X is uttered. The normative interpretation of X is not X comes from the conflict between different linguistic systems.

    本年度の成果は、大きく3つにまとめられる。
    第一に、メンタル・スペース理論の枠組みで非現実世界に言及する「この映画で{は/も}ヒッチコックはヒッチコックだ」のようなトートロジーが持つ解釈を論じた。このトートロジーは14通りの読みを持つが、これらの読みは、スペース間結合トートロジーとしての解釈と差異否定型トートロジーとして解釈とに大きく分類される。前者の場合、トートロジーはあるスペースの要素が別のスペースのどの要素に対応するかを述べ、介在するコネクターに応じて解釈の複数性が生じる。後者の場合、あるスペースの要素が別のスペースにおいてもその属性を維持していることを述べ、スペースの多様性に応じて解釈の複数性が生じる。
    第二に、日本語とフランス語の差異否定型トートロジーの異同を記述した。両言語に共通する解釈スキーマを仮定することができる一方で、細部において相違点が観察される。日本語のトートロジーは、フランス語のトートロジーと異なり、主語と属詞が同一形態でなければならないという制約に従っており、ある程度構文化されていると考えられる。また、フランス語ではトートロジーに対応する否定文が完全に容認されるのに対して、日本語では「MではXはXだ」の否定として「MではXがXでなくなる」あるいは「MのXはXではない」の方が自然である。これは、一般に日本語のコピュラ文が、フランス語のコピュラ文と異なり、主語と属詞の形態的同一性を要求するという事実からの帰結である。
    第三に、差異否定型トートロジーと共起することが多い条件文と譲歩文の分析を開始した。条件文はもっぱら何らかの結論に対する論拠として機能し、この機能を条件文の定義とするべきであるという言語内論証理論的分析を批判し、条件文が正当化する結論は言語学的に見て均質的でなく、これらの結論を無定義概念とすることには問題があることを論じた。

    WhereasFrege’s impact on modern semantics (and pragmatics) is uncontroversial, it isgenerally assumed that the scope of the Fregean framework is confined to formalsemantics (and pragmatics) as opposed to cognitive semantics, or more broadly,cognitive linguistics. This research explored to what extent Frege’s notion ofsense/thought (Sinn/Gedanke) is compatible with Langacker’s notion ofconstrual. As regards singular terms like “themorning star” / “the evening star”, the compatibility of the two models isindisputable; the sense/construal of a singular term corresponds to aparticular way of thinking or viewing its reference. Even though Frege’s positionon predicates like “horse” / “steed” is not so straightforward, his model canbe construed in such a way as to be no lessfine-grained than Langacker’s. The parallel between sense and construal finallycollapses when grammatical constructions appear on the scene.Although he detects differing meaning in pairs of truth-conditionallyequivalent sentences, Frege relegates it to the realm of the tone, a realmwhich belongs to “what is beautiful in language” or “poetic eloquence”. If,despite Frege’s notorious dichotomy between science/logic and fiction/poetry,the integration of the tone with the sense is feasible, then Frege may count asone of the founders, albeit a marginal one, of cognitive linguistics, in thathe explicitly provided, more than one century ago, detailed descriptions ofthose aspects of meaning that cognitivists are pursuing today.
