    Economic disparity in Japan has been increasing since approximately 1980. This change has been particularly significant in one of its global cities, the Tokyo metropolitan area, resulting in a dramatic transformation of its socio-spatial structure. Until the 1980s, economic disparity in Tokyo was not as large as that in the whole of Japan. Moreover, the concentration of high-income households in the center of Tokyo was not significant. However, the old middle class, which consist of self-employed individuals, and small capitalist class began to dissolve in the 1980s and 1990s, respectively, resulting in a decline in the population in the center of the city and its surrounding areas. In the 2000s the new middle class began to move into these areas. This was gentrification; however, because of the time difference between the dissolution of the old middle class and small capitalists and the influx of the new middle class, it was not violent but proceeded in a relatively peaceful manner. Until 1990, in areas 20-40 km from the center of Tokyo, income levels and the proportion of the new middle class were high, however by 2010 the proportion of the working class had increased, and income levels had fallen significantly. Thus, in the Tokyo metropolitan area, the old middle class and the small capitalists in and around the center of Tokyo were replaced by the new middle class, and a hierarchical socio-spatial structure culminationg in the center of Tokyo developed.

  • Transformation of the class structure in contemporary Japan

    Japan had experienced a rapid increase in economic disparity since the early 1980s. This article attempts to quantitatively clarify the structure of economic disparity and its social consequences in contemporary Japan from the perspective of Marxian class theory. Based on the analysis of government statistics and questionnaire survey data, the following facts were revealed. First, the class categories based on Marxian class theory had strong explanatory power for income and social consciousness. Second, in Japanese society, there is an exploitation relationship in which the three classes located in the capitalist mode of production exploit the old middle class located in simple commodity production. Within the capitalist mode of production, the capitalist class and the new middle class are the exploiting classes and the working class is the exploited class, however the central targets of exploitation are the underclass and female workers. Thirdly, the underclass is fundamentally different from the other classes in terms of income, life course, consciousness and living conditions. From the above, we can conclude that Japanese society today is a new class society that includes the underclass as an important element at the bottom of class structure.

  • Validation of Shojiro Ujihara's 'Closed Company Labor Market Model' : Re-analyzing the 'Keihin Industrial Area Survey'

    The purpose of this paper is to examine the three hypotheses proposed by Shojiro Ujihara in the early 1950's: the seniority system hypothesis, the long-term employment hypothesis and the closed company labor market (internal labor market) model hypothesis. For this purpose, the original completed survey sheets of the 'Keihin industrial area survey,' conducted by Ujihara in 1951, were investigated, transformed into data sets and analyzed. The findings are as follows: (1) The seniority systern hypothesis is partly supported by the fact that status and wage were determined by years of employment, although there were numerous exceptions, and the years of experience before employment also had certain effects on status and wage. (2) The long-term employment hypothesis is partly supported by the machine industry in the 1920's, the war-time era and the early 1950's. (3) The closed company labor market (internal labor market) hypothesis is almost completely disproved by the fact that there were many chances for mid-career leavers to enter large companies, especially in the prewar period.

    The following points became clear from the analysis of the regional statistics and the results of the questionnaire survey. (1)Between 1990 and 2010, the class structure of the Tokyo metropolitan area tends to be polarized: the old middle class and manual workers decrease, and the new middle class and service workers lower workers increase. (2)This change was accompanied by spatial polarization, with new middle class and high-income households increasing in the central area, and non-regular workers and low-income households increasing in the periphery. (3)However, the polarization tendency in the east-west direction was maintained, where the composition ratio of the new middle class and income level was high in the southwest direction of the city center and low in the north-east direction. (4) Spatial polarization was accompanied by polarization of residents' political consciousness.

    The purpose of research project is to examine quantitatively the transformation processes of Japanese society from prewar to postwar. For this purpose, the labor research documents stored in the Institute of Social Science, University of Tokyo, were investigated, recoded and transformed into data set and analysed. Findings are as follows : (1)agricultural land ownership and pre-modern family title of prewar era as class origins continued to influence the class location of descendant over a long period of time considerably after the war. (2)Experience of war, such as recruitment and war damage, has been strongly influenced career patterns and poverty risk. (3)In manufacturing industry, especially the machinery industry, long-term employment practices are formed from the 1920s, this is continuous with the long-term employment practices after the war

    The purpose of this project is to re-construct women's labor history after World War II in Japan, in questioning the process of 'women's work' has formed in the different ways that 'men's work', that has been applied long-term employment and seniority-based wage system, has formed. For this, we selected women workers who engaged in textile weaving industry at the northern part of Fukushima Prefecture, Kawamata where women's labor is accumulated, as investigation object. We analyzed the life history of former women workers in textile weaving industry and tried to clarify how their paid work was articulated with their family life

  • Research on Gender and Social Stratification in Contemporary Japan

    The purposes of this project are to construct the research framework of gender and social stratification, and to prepare for the comparative studies between three societies (Japan, Korea and Taiwan) by the 2005 Social Stratification and Social Mobility Survey (2005 SSM).1. We had a research meeting, titled "Kyoto Conference on Social Stratification in East Asia," with Korean and Taiwanese sociologists in 2003. Since then, we have made a close-knit research network with them. In this discussion, we constructed a basic framework of comparative research.2. We conducted research about an ability of Korean and Taiwanese research agencies to conduct Taiwanese and Korean SSM survey. As a result, we found research agencies in both countries which can conduct SSM survey.3. The preliminary survey data were analyzed from the following viewpoints :a. Survey items were checked based on analysis of 2003 domestic preliminary survey. (Examination of gender related item : Examination of traditional survey item like perception of fairness)b. Preparation for international comparison. (Constructing Korean occupational prestige score: Japan- Korea comparison of status identification)c. Strategy for response rate improvement. (To find the way to raise response rate in the deterioration of survey environments.)4. As a result, we clarified that the response rate was influenced by timing of interviewers' visits. And also we found how to improve the survey items

  • Historical Sociometrics of Women's Labor in Modern Japan

    This research aims at clarifying the formation-transformation processes of sexual division of labor, the supply mechanism of the female labor power to modern industries, and the employment and the labor power supply structure of a household in modern Japan. Census data and survey data of these five decades were collected, unanalyzed answers of 1965 SSM survey were coded and made into new data sets, and questionnaire survey of Koriyama girls high school graduate were conducted for this purpose. The most fruitful resource was recoded data of 1965 SSM survey. This data has made it possible to analyze employment structure of households including women born during 1870-1940.In the result, we could clarify size and structure of multi-employment household including individual workers and employed workers, and formation processes of single bread-winner household of working and new middle classes in modern industries. Then, we found household types classified according to employment structure and composition of labor power is dominant factors of economic disparities and political party support. These findings are previously unheard contribution to studies on class structure and women's labor. The questionnaire survey revealed some important points as follows. There is close interrelationship between regional mobility and inter-class mobility of women. Typical career patterns of women are : (1) women with working class or farming class origin tend to immigrate to metropolitan area and become members of working class or housewives of working class household, (2) women with new or old middle classes tend to stay in hometown and become members of new or old middle classes or housewives of middle class households. These mobility structure is common with men's mobility, so women and men have complementary mobility Patterns to produce and reproduce household of each classes

    　本研究は、科学研究費補助金「三大都市圏における格差拡大の進行過程とその社会的帰結に関する計量的研究」（基盤A）を受けて行なわれる一連の研究を補足するため、資料収集、データの加工と分析などを行なうものである。本調査は2022年1月に東京圏、名古屋圏、京阪神圏の3大都市圏の約44000人を対象として実施された。分析の結果、社会的ニーズの充足状況に大きな階級格差が存在していること、新型コロナウイルス感染症の蔓延は旧中間階級とアンダークラスに強く影響し、この2階級と他の階級の格差が拡大していること、三大都市圏では共通に、都心に富裕層が流入し、貧困層は周縁部で増加していることが明らかとなった。

    　本研究は、科学研究費補助金「三大都市圏における格差拡大の進行過程とその社会的帰結に関する計量的研究」（基盤A）を受けて行なわれる一連の研究を補足するため、資料収集、データの加工と分析などを行なうものである。科学研究費による調査は、2021年1月に東京圏、名古屋圏、京阪神圏の3大都市圏の約6000人を対象として実施された。分析の結果、アンダークラスの生活困難が深刻化していること、新型コロナウイルスか感染症の蔓延は旧中間階級とアンダークラスに強く影響し、この2階級と他の階級の格差が拡大していることが明らかとなった。また3大都市圏のメッシュ統計の分析から、3大都市圏はそれぞれにセクター型構造と同心円型構造の複合した空間構造をもっていることが明らかとなった。

    　(1)科学研究費補助金を受けて実施した「大都市部住民の仕事・生活と地域社会に関する調査」から得られたデータを分析し、首都圏住民の格差・貧困と生活実態、生活要求に関する分析を行なった。　(2)東京駅から半径60km圏内の市区町村別データ、メッシュ統計データを分析し、東京圏の社会空間構造とその変遷に関する分析を行なった。その結果、都心と周辺、東と西を2つの対立軸とした格差拡大と分極化が進行していることが明らかとなった。　(3)名古屋駅から40km圏内の中京圏、大阪駅から50km圏内の京阪神圏について、市区町村別データとメッシュ統計データを収集・加工し、予備的な分析を行なった。

  • 東京圏におけるアンダークラスの存在形態と生活実態に関する計量的研究

    　本研究では、雇用の多様化により形成された非正規雇用者からなる新しい下層階級＝アンダークラスの空間的分布、形成過程、生活実態を明らかにするため、地域メッシュ統計の分析と2016年首都圏調査データの再分析を行った。これにより以下の諸点が明らかとなった。①パート主婦が主に都心から20km以遠に分布しているのに対して、アンダークラスは都心を含む50km圏内に幅広く分布している。②アンダークラスは都心からの距離と年齢層によって分化しており、若年都心型、中高年都心型、若年郊外型、中高年郊外型に分類される。③郊外では、就業機会の乏しい郊外から移動せずにいることがアンダークラスへの所属をもたらしている。

  • 首都圏における貧困世帯・生活困難世帯の空間的分布と生活実態に関する計量的研究

    　本研究は、2015-2018年度の科学研究費補助金(基盤A)「大都市部における格差拡大の進行過程とその社会的帰結に関する計量的研究」に付随して、収集した統計データのより詳細な分析を進めるとともに、2016年度に実施した質問紙調査データに回答者の居住歴情報を付加して、貧困層の多い地域の分布およびその変化、住民の居住地および居住歴を分析することを通じて、貧困層および貧困層の多い地域の形成過程を明らかにしようとするものである。分析の結果、(1)首都圏ではかつて貧困層は都心から周辺部に幅広く分布していたが、近年では都心部で減少し、都心からの距離が大きいほど貧困層比率が高くなっていること、(2)貧困層は出身地または旧住地に定着する傾向が強いのに対して、富裕層は周辺部から都心部へと転居する傾向が強く、このため都心でジェントリフィケーション、周辺部では貧困比率の上昇してきたことが明らかとなった。

  • 大都市住民の地域間移動と格差に関する計量的研究

    　本研究は、「大都市部における格差拡大の進行過程とその社会的帰結に関する計量的研究」(基盤研究A、2015-2018年度)を補完し、とくに大都市住民の地域間移動と格差の関係について計量的な分析を行なおうとするものである。　この目的のため、上記の科学研究費によって2016年に実施した質問紙調査の調査票原票に記された、回答者の出身地、前住地、現住地に関する自由記述回答をコーディングし、これと出身階級、初職時点の所属階級、現在の所属階級、階層意識との関係を分析した。この結果、地域間移動経験が世代間階層移動と密接な関係にあること、首都圏周辺部出身者が、出身地にそのまま定住した場合には、上昇移動する可能性が小さく、しかも一部は下降移動してアンダークラスとなる可能性が高いことが判明した。

  • アジア太平洋戦争前後の人の移動に関する計量的研究

    　本研究は、戦前から戦中・戦後にかけての日本人の移動のようす、とりわけ空間的移動と階級・階層間移動の量と構造を、計量的データにもとづいて明らかにしようとするものである。この目的のため、1965年SSM調査(社会階層と移動全国調査)の調査票原票から、1920年代から60年代にかけての、人々の職歴と勤務場所についての回答の再コーディングを実施した。データはほぼ完成し、現在はクリーニング作業中である。分析結果は、2017年度中には論文として公表できる予定である。なおこれとは別に、1955年と1965年のSSM調査データにより、戦前･戦中から戦後にかけての階級・階層間移動についての時系列的な分析を行ない、その成果を著書『はじまりの戦後日本』(河出書房新社)で公表している。

    　本研究は、科学研究費を受けた「戦後日本社会の形成過程に関する計量歴史社会学的研究」を継承・発展させるため、データ分析と史料の探索を行うものである。成果は、以下の通りである。①日本的雇用慣行は、1920年代後半に機械工業で先行する形で導入されたが、他産業には広がらず、50年代になって機械工業から他産業へ拡大した。②50年代の製鉄･化学工業ではOJTを通じた技能形成とこれを基礎とする年功制が成立していたが、造船業では部分的にしか成立していなかった。③東京大学社会科学研究所が所蔵する2つの調査の調査票原票を精査し、その分析によって得られると考えられる成果と、そのための作業量及び経費を特定した。

  • 戦後復興期における労使関係の形成過程に関する研究

    　本研究は科学研究費(基盤(B))に採択された「戦後日本社会の形成過程に関する計量歴史社会学的研究」を補足するために、当初予定になかったデータの作成と分析を行おうとするものである。上記科研費研究では、1951 年に東京大学社会科学研究所によって実施された「京浜工業地帯調査」の調査票原票の回答をデータ化し、分析をすすめている。これに付随して、調査対象者のうち50名に対して行なわれた詳細な面接調査記録が発見されたため、これをデジタルカメラで撮影して画像化し、さらに学生アルバイトを雇用してワードプロセッサに入力して文書化した。これによって、｢京浜工業地帯調査｣の主要部分のデータが、すべてデジタル化された。　以上を分析した結果、以下の諸点が明らかとなった。　(1)調査の中心人物だった氏原正治郎は、本調査から「企業封鎖的労働市場」という労働市場モデルを提唱し、日本の大企業は主に若年の未熟練労働者を採用して育成し、長期にわたって雇用すること、ここでは勤続年数に基づく年功制が形成されていること、大企業の労働市場は封鎖性が強く、中小企業の労働市場から分断されていることなどを主張した。これが、その後の｢日本的雇用慣行｣をめぐる研究の原型となった。しかしデータの再分析からは、これらは一部しか実証されなかった。　(2)さらに氏原は、明確な根拠を示さなかったものの、企業封鎖的労働市場の成立時期は「第一次大戦後の合理化の時代と戦時中の生産力増強の時代」と指摘した。これはその後、兵藤剣の研究によって実証的根拠が与えられ、ある時期までは定説と扱われたものの、近年ではこれを否定する研究が相次いでいた。これに対して今回、機械工業の労働者の職歴分析を行なったところ、この指摘がかなりの程度に実証されることが判明した。　(3)氏原の研究では、聞き取り調査の結果のうち、長期勤続しているごく一部の労働者の証言を中心に結論が組み立てられていた。この結果、長期勤続を中心とする「日本的雇用慣行」の存在が過大評価された可能性があることが判明した。
