During the Principate, the memory sanctions, called damnatio memoriae by modern scholars, were taken against "bad" emperors. Notorious tyrants, such as Caligula, Nero, Domitian and Commodus, suffered this measure and their statues, inscriptions, and official records were removed from the public space. This book explores this procedure of memory rewriting and analyzes the transformation of the power balance between the Senate and the emperors.
This measure has often been regarded as postmortem counterattack of the senate against oppressive emperors. The comprehensive analysis of the well-known cases, however, reveals it was rather emperors who forced the senate to destroy their predecessors' memory. This measure was exploited as means for a reigning emperor to justify his legitimacy and to establish a new cooperative relationship with the senate. Thus, the comparison of the sanctions makes explicit the dynamics that dictated the political landscape of the early empire.
Furthermore, the damnatio memoriae itself was not so static a measure throughout the Principate. The social stigma it brought about on the individual and his family had been not so profound in the earlier period, while the sweeping attack on memoria of the condemned were more often attested in the second century. The monuments for, and the records of, the "bad" emperors got a thoroughgoing elimination from the public space; the ill reputes of them were perpetuated all over the empire; and a more systematic approach to the physical destruction was applied as the imperial rule was established. This change in the damnatio memoriae reflects not only a political situation but also a fluctuating attitude toward the public monuments in Roman society. It was the currency of memoria in the political and cultural milieu of the Mediterranean world that did enable damnatio to work as a social sanction. Public monuments, festivals, and laws of emperors, whether "good" or "bad", left a deep impression on the civic life of the people, so that they were crucial in determining the language and the behavior of political and civic life. The diachronic analysis of damnatio memoriae makes explicit to what extent the physical objects contributed to the formation of communal memory all over the empire and what was at stake in the cultural mind of contemporaries.
The principal approaches this study adopts in the analysis of damnatio memoriae are as follows. First, it investigates the presuppositions of the classical authors concerning the condemnation of "bad" emperors. While earlier authors attribute this measure to the initiative of the senate, those of the later period do not explicitly mention its proponent but describe it as executed by the whole society. In other words, later authors regard the damnatio memoriae as a matter of course and their interests lie not in the measure itself but in the way it was deployed. Secondly, this study makes a close examination of the inscriptions and the statues all over the empire which were destroyed or removed in the aftermath of the memory sanction. This analysis reveals that the extent to which they were liable to elimination differs considerably depending on regions and periods. In some cases, most of the imperial monuments were left intact despite damnatio memoriae. These differences in the enforcement and the different attitudes of classical authors toward the sanction make explicit social changes experienced by the Romans in the Principate.

［講演］第１回 首都ローマのモニュメントから見るローマ皇帝のイメージ 2015年3月6日

本研究は3世紀前半に書かれたカッシウス・ディオによる『ローマ史』のテクストが、15・16世紀のイタリアでいかに流通し、作品の内容がいかに受容されたかを明らかにするものである。申請者は早稲田大学図書館所蔵の1503年頃の印刷本に収録された、カッシウス・ディオの作品（正確にはクシフィリヌスによる要約）のラテン語訳とその再録について研究を実施し、2022年度に論文化した。その際に存在を知ったのが、現在ヴェネツィアのマルチャーナ図書館に所蔵されている『ローマ史』の写本2冊である。これらの写本はコンスタンティノープル出身のベッサリオンによって1468年に寄贈されたものであり、この写本を通じてディオのテクストやその翻訳が15世紀末から16世紀にかけて知られることになったと推測できる。そこで、2月17−23日にイタリアのフィレンツェとヴェネツィアにおいて調査を実施した。実質的には18日から22日の4日間の調査であったが、フィレンツェ大学を訪問してこの分野についての研究者と意見交換したほか、フィレンツェ国立図書館での関連文献調査、ヴェネツィアのマルチャーナ図書館での該当写本の調査を実施した。その成果はイタリアの研究雑誌に英語での論文投稿に向けて執筆をすすめている。ディオやその要約であるクシフィリヌスのテクストはギリシア語からのラテン語訳を通じて16世紀に徐々に広く読まれるようになっていくが、本研究の過程で集めた資料をもとにテクストの流布や翻訳の流布がいかに行われたのかを可視化することで、ローマ時代のギリシア語歴史史料がどのようにルネサンス期のイタリアで受容されたのかが明らかになると考えられる。

本研究では、帝政初期ローマにおいて生じた帝位継承における「危機」が、いかに後代の皇帝にとって都合の良い形で歴史に織り込まれていったのかという問題から、古代ローマにおける集合的記憶の改変過程の解明を試みた。このような帝位をめぐる「危機」の後、皇帝や元老院はこのような事態を生じさせた「悪帝」の記憶を都合の良いように修正し、特に歴史書などの言論空間を通じて新たな歴史を構築している。そこで、この恣意的な集合的記憶の構築過程を、碑文史料に残された「危機」の時代の記録と、元老院議員等が記した歴史書における「危機」についての叙述の比較という視座から分析した。この研究成果の一部は書籍として刊行している。

　本研究では、68年にネロが自殺に追い込まれた後、彼の生前に皇帝を顕彰するために設置された記録物の帝国各地における扱われ方の地域差を明らかにすることを出発点として、彼の同時代評価と69年の内乱を経てネロの「悪帝」としてのイメージがいかに形成されたのかという問題の解明を試みた。特に、データベース等を活用して地域毎の碑文史料におけるネロへの対応の違いを明らかにすることから、69年に即位した皇帝たちの政治動向を分析し、ネロの同時代評価と「悪帝」イメージの形成過程を明らかにした。研究成果の一部を利用した論文の刊行と研究発表に加え、主な成果は今後刊行予定の書籍において公表する予定である。

　本研究の目的は、ダムナティオ・メモリアエについての伝記史料の記述の差異を詳細に検討することで、この処分に対するローマ人の見解がどのように変容していったのかを明示することであった。　特に、古代ローマ史の伝記史料として極めて重要な作品である、紀元後２世紀初めに執筆されたスエトニウスの『ローマ皇帝伝』と、４世紀末頃に執筆された作者不詳の『ヒストリア・アウグスタ』を比較し、それぞれにおける皇帝に対するダムナティオ・メモリアエ描写の差異を調べた。その上で、これら２作品におけるダムナティオ・メモリアエについての認識の違いの背景を探り、これらの時期における、ローマ人の皇帝や記録に対する見解の変容を明らかにしようと試みた。　その結果、スエトニウスの記述ではダムナティオ・メモリアエが悪帝に対して元老院が行った記録の破壊行為であったとしてのみ描写されているのに対し、４世紀の『ヒストリア・アウグスタ』では、神々の敵である悪帝に対して行われた報いであったり、神々による懲罰という理由付けのもとに処分が行われており、ダムナティオ・メモリアエに対する神々の介在という特徴があることが判明した。『ヒストリア・アウグスタ』では「神々の敵hostis deorum」という言葉が散見されるが、この言葉は４世紀まで歴史叙述では「悪帝」に対して用いられることのなかった表現である。もっとも、「神の敵」という表現はキリスト教叙述において以前から確認できる。異教よりの人物である作者がこの表現を使っていることは、４世紀の異教の歴史叙述におけるキリスト教の影響についての検討の契機にもなると考えられることから、今後は本研究を発展させる形での研究を進めていきたい。　また、北京師範大学で開催されたThe Tenth China-Korea-Japan Symposium on Ancient European History “City-State, Empire and Identity in the Ancient World”においては、”The intervention of gods in the punishment of “bad” emperors in the Historia Augusta”と題した口頭報告も行っている。

　古代ローマでは、ダムナティオ・メモリアエと呼ばれる処分が行われていた。これは、当該人物の死後、その人物に関連する記録／記憶を断罪し、公の場から抹消するというものであった。本研究では、これまで行なってきたダムナティオ・メモリアエの基礎研究を踏まえながらも、公的な領域における処分に主眼を移し、皇帝を取り囲む政治抗争の中で記録の断罪がいかに利用されたのかという点に着目して検討を行った。　これに際し、本研究助成を利用して、8月には執政官や宗教祭祀団の暦表、皇帝関連碑文が多数収録されているローマ国立博物館４館において資料撮影を行ったほか、ベルリンのフンボルト大学で、関連する文献史料の複写等を行った。8月27日から31日には、ベルリンで開催された第14回ギリシャ・ローマ国際碑文学会（XIV Congressus Internationalis Epigraphiae Graecae et Latinae）に参加し、ダムナティオ・メモリアエや記録の抹消を扱ったS. Benoist, C. Rouecheらの研究報告を聞いたほか、新発見史料や新たなデータベース構築についてなど、様々な研究テーマの報告から多くの知見を得た。　これらの調査を経て、2013年3月に刊行された『ヨーロッパ・「共生」の政治文化史』において、「クラウディウスによる『共生』の模索とカリグラの記憶」と題した論文を執筆した。これは、カリグラの暗殺からクラウディウスへの帝位継承の際に行われた記録／記憶の破壊を取り上げたもので、皇帝に対して行われたダムナティオ・メモリアエの先駆例とされる事例を、文献史料と碑文史料を組み合わせて検討したものである。特に、碑文史料を時系列に整理した結果、当初はカリグラの記録／記憶を擁護する姿勢を見せたクラウディウスが、徐々にカリグラの記録／記憶に対する攻撃を強めていく過程を明らかにすることができた。またこの時点では、皇帝の死の直後に記録／記憶の破壊が１つの処分として行われたわけではなく、漸次的に破壊行為や「悪帝」としてのイメージ形成が行われていった点を明示できたことも、今後のダムナティオ・メモリアエ研究において１つの布石になると考えている。
