  • The Contact-Hitting R&D Strategy of Family Firms in the Japanese Pharmaceutical Industry

    Shigeru Asaba, Tetsuo Wada

    Family Business Review   32 ( 3 ) 277 - 295  2019.09  [Refereed]

    Authorship:Lead author

     View Summary

This article addresses the following question: How do family firms investing less in research and development (R&D) than nonfamily firms compete in R&D intensive industries? Using Japanese pharmaceutical industry data, we found that family firms produce more patents per R&D than nonfamily firms but are not biased toward low-value innovations. Further analyses of the distribution over innovation value suggested that family firms adopt a “contact-hitting R&D strategy,” avoiding radical innovations and pursuing incremental innovations compatible with their signature moves: innovation through tradition and narrow and internal search and resulting in may low-value innovations and a few mid or high-value innovations.

  • Patient investment of family firms in the Japanese electric machinery industry

    Shigeru Asaba

    Asia Pacific Journal of Management   30 ( 3 ) 697 - 715  2013.09  [Refereed]

     View Summary

This study investigates distinctive investment behavior of family firms to distinguish among the diverse theories on the characteristics of family firms. Agency theorists emphasize reduced agency conflicts in family owned and managed firms due to alignment of interests between owners and managers. By contrast, family business researchers emphasize family owners' priorities to retain control of the business and their risk preferences caused by long investment horizons and a desire for continuity. Drawing from agency and family business literatures, we set the hypotheses on two distinctive investment behaviors: aggressive investment and patient investment. Analyzing the data on investment of the listed firms in the Japanese electric machinery industry, we show that family firms invest more than non-family firms. Such aggressive investment can be caused by reduced agency conflicts as well as by owners' risk preference. However, further analysis finds several results which are consistent not with the agency perspective but with the family business perspective. We show that family firms continue to invest under volatile and stagnant environments. Such patient investment can be caused by the risk preferences of family owners who have long time horizons and a desire for continuity. Therefore, not only ownership structure (equity share holding of management) but also being a family business (priority and risk preference of family owners) is essential characteristics of family firms which cause their distinctive investment behavior. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

  • A new approach for understanding dominant design: The case of the ink-jet printer

    Neil Clymer, Shigeru Asaba

    JOURNAL OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY MANAGEMENT   25 ( 3 ) 137 - 156  2008.09  [Refereed]

     View Summary

We study dominant design strategies concerning the allocation of technological resources for ink-jet printers. We find that the dominant design for each firm can be quantitatively represented by the number of ink-jet patents in nine categories of a matrix that distinguishes patents according to method of implementation and type of module. Further, we find that annual firm ink-jet revenue from 1990 through 2000 is positively correlated with a balanced dispersion of patents across the nine categories. Results suggest that higher revenues will accrue to firms in integrated industries when resources are balanced among important sub-technologies in the dominant design. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. • Why do firms imitate each other?

    MB Lieberman, S Asaba

    ACADEMY OF MANAGEMENT REVIEW   31 ( 2 ) 366 - 385  2006.04  [Refereed]

     View Summary

Scholars from diverse disciplines have proposed numerous theories of business imitation. We organize these theories into two broad categories: (1) information-based theories. where firms follow others that are perceived as having superior information, and (2) rivalry-based theories, where firms imitate others to maintain competitive parity or limit rivalry. We describe conditions under which each type of imitation is most likely and offer guidance on identifying imitation in practice. Amplification effects and other performance implications of imitation are also addressed.

     View Summary

This study assesses the inventory and productivity performance of the Japanese and US automotive industries in recent decades. Within each country we distinguish between vehicle assemblers and parts suppliers. In Japan, assemblers and suppliers made dramatic inventory reductions and productivity gains, particularly during the 1970s. By comparison, we find an unbalanced pattern for the United States: American assembly plants have been streamlined, but parts suppliers have stagnated. In both countries our findings suggest a strong association between inventory reduction and productivity growth. © 1997 John Wiley &amp

Based on the original database constructed for listed family firms in Japan, we searched for the key variables to lead these firms to aim for long term sustainability. Our main finding for family firms in Japan are: 1) informational asymmetry is higher and cost of debt is lower, 2) CSP is lower but the role of CEO is positive for selected industries, 3) family firms show better earnings quality and the distance to default is longer, 4) the variability of financial indicators of family firms is lower and these firms aim for conservative and sustainable management, 5) family firms invest less on R&D expenditures, which is crucial for long-term growth, but their investment behavior is more focused, and 6) the recent various reforms conducted by Tokyo Stock Exchange helped reduce the illiquidity of listed stocks to a great extent and made the cost of equity and the hurdle for future investment lower to attract more investment

The aim of our research project is to measure intangible investment in Japan and to examine its effects on productivity growth at the aggregate and firm levels. Our measure of intangibles by industry has been published at the website of Research Institute of Economy, Trade, and Industry since 2011. By using this data, Miyagawa and Hisa found positive and significant effects of intangible investment on productivity growth in Japan. Our study at the industry level was published at the Japanese Economic Review in 2013. We also measure management score on organizational and human capital within a firm through interview surveys. The studies that examines the relationship between management score and productivity improvement of firms were published in a book edited by Bounfour and Miyagawa in 2015. Miyagawa, Asaba, and Hosono also organized a conference on intangibles in 2014. They will publish a conference volume from University of Tokyo Press within 2015

Patent citations have been widely utilized as empirical tools for studies on such issues as economic value and knowledge flows. However, network attributes of patent citations have been mostly ignored in applied studies from economics and management. This project employs network attributes such as transitivity both at the whole network level and at individual citation pair level. One of the findings is that inventor patent citations are more locally clustered than examiner patent citations. Also, statistical analyses are conducted on the obstacles against prior art search by patent offices. Thus, contributions of this project are made for understanding the foundations of patent citations

    2016

     View Summary

    2013

     View Summary
