    A Pattern Language for Creating Collaborative Communities with International Human Resources has been developed by compiling practical knowledge for creating multicultural workplaces. This pattern language is structured by 31 "patterns" extracted from practices of leading companies with collaborative communities, and can be used as "glasses of recognition," as "vocabulary for dialogue," and as "idea generator" in workplaces which are about to promote collaborative communities. The present study describes in detail the overview and developmental process of this pattern language.

    The purpose of this study is to reveal the possibilities and challenges of the course, `Advising for Japanese Language Learning'. We interviewed students from the course (trainees) and experienced and novice advisors at a facility, Waseda Nihongo Support, regarding how they will deal with a particular advising case. The results showed that all the parties were conscious of the three principles for advising, but novice advisors and trainees had difficulties exploring the gap between the current learning state and future vision.

    After a brief description of the acquisition processes of vowel length perception, this study attempts to explain variation in these processes with individual differences of Korean learners of Japanese as a second language. Findings demonstrated that 1) the Korean learners improved in their perception of the long-vowel over time, 2) first and second year students were unable to perceive the difference between long and short vowels. The individual differences measured by psychometric questionnaire were learning experience, motivation, learning strategies. The results may explain variation in acquisition.

    Critical Period Hypothesis is widely known amongst researchers in Second Language Acquisition. The first aim of this study is to examine the Critical Period Hypothesis in phonological acquisition of a second language. The recording of pronunciation task (words, sentences, conversation) by Japanese (101) and English (99) learners was conducted in 2004. In 2005, a CD-ROM was created for evaluation of their pronunciation. The CD-ROM contains randomized sound files of native speakers and learners. 5 Japanese and 5 English native speakers spent 15 hours each for evaluation.
    The results of this study show that, the age of onset affect the phonological acquisition. However, it was found that several learners achieved native-level acquisition despite the fact that they started studying after the critical period. For example, four learners were evaluated as native level for all words, sentences and conversations. Amongst four Japanese learners, two informants' age of onset was 18, and age of arrival was 22. The results obtained in this study show that, it is possible for an adult learner to acquire native level pronunciation even if he/she started learning the language after critical period, thus contradicts critical period hypothesis.
    Secondly, interviews were conduced with learners who achieved native level pronunciation, and it was found that they share similarities, such as 1) Input flood at the early stage of acquisition, 2)phonologically focused learning experience, 3) use of rich resources, 4) use of unique strategies, such as shadowing, 5) utilizing both classroom and natural environments. It was suggested that these strategies may be applied in the classroom. We did not have time, however, for examining the effect of teaching pronunciation using these strategies.
    The results of this study were presented at conferences in Japan and overseas. We are currently editing the report, and it will be printed and sent out by the end of June.

    This project has successfully demonstrated that the use of video-conferencing as an authentic medium in the language learning classroom is viable. Research has shown that through interaction, given the appropriate conditions, negotiation of meaning, considered essential for language learning to take place, does occur.
    Results have also demonstrated that the level of communication required for communication to take place is difficult to achieve. Firstly, practical problems make continued communication difficult, these are, but not limited to, scheduling classes across different time zones, communication between to achers, and regular equipment failure. However, there are also more inherent problems with the video-conferencing medium itself. That is it is context reduced and the interlocuters obtain much less no n-verbal and emotional cues than they would for face-to-face communication. This causes major difficulties in communication for non-native speakers who normally require a context-rich environment for communication to be successful. Time-lag in the broadcast also provides major limitations to this style of communication. Thus the research initially demonstrated the difficulty of fostering a communicative environment through this medium.
    Further quasi-experimental data which introduced a task based environment into this environment demonstrated that with this highly structured task environment interaction became more effective, and the participants were more able to negotiate meaning. In addition findings showed that repetition of tasks, once before the conferencing session and once during the session proved to be very effective, as the learners were able to frame the language used prior to the interaction.

    This paper reports research examining the stylistic shifts of verbs in the expression of critical thinking of mid- to high intermediate Korean learners of Japanese. In both Japanese and Korean, stylistic shifts between standard and polite expressions are not allowed in either written and spoken language. However, in this research, which examined the written expression of opinions elicited through tasks of 31 Korean learners of Japanese, instances of style shift were found in both Korean and Japanese. An analysis demonstrated evidence of style shifts at the boundary between descriptive and evaluative statements.

    Critical thinking is an essential 21st Century skill (Kusumi & Michita, 2015). In this research, the effects of task difficulty and language on written persuasiveness are examined. Thirty Chinese learners of Japanese were asked to write four opinion tasks varying the language used (Chinese and Japanese) and the task-difficulty (daily-life and specialist themes), and the persuasiveness (% of reason and evidence statements; Manalo et al.,2015) analyzed. The results showed that the simple tasks completed in Chinese were more persuasive than difficult tasks written in Japanese. These results will be discussed with reference to tasks in language teaching.

    This study aimed to clarify what learners think about during a pronunciation test, which comprised reading of words, sentences, and a picture story. The study was conducted to ascertain the learners' ability after a special morae lesson using body movements, and employed interviews to ask the learners about their thoughts while they were completing the test. The interview results found the influence of the use of direction only in the test involving reading of words and sentences. Furthermore, the results highlighted the necessity to bridge the gap between reading of words, sentences and doing a picture story.

    The aim of this research was to clarify the relation between body movements and improvement in the evaluation of special morae. This was done through interviews. The subjects were 35 intermediate level students studying at a Japanese language school. We provided them with two, one-hour one-to-one classes, using movement of body which they selected themselves. We observed that the way they grasped the special morae varied, e.g., there were changes in their rhythm-making, corresponding to morae or syllable, and in their body movements, according to the type of special morae. We concluded that the skill in pronunciation was clearly improved, and it should be noted that the students showing good improvement tended to make rhythm by morae.

    The aim of this research is to clarify 1) effects of the instruction of special morae with visual aids and 2) whether word-level utterances are different from sentence-level for foreign learners of Japanese, who have different learning styles. The instructions are conducted to 13 pre-intermediate level students and their utterances are evaluated. As a result of ANOVA, significant effects are found between scores of pre- and post-examinations on both word and sentence levels. Significant effects also show different learning styles on word levels while they do not on sentence levels.

    　2019年度特定課題「音声における自律学習支援システムの構築」（研究代表者：木下直子）は、日本語学習者自身で日本語の音声学習が進められる支援システムの構築を目指している。　本教材の動画は日本語の初級後半以降の学習者を対象としてきたが、国内外の教育現場から初級学習者でも理解可能なように多言語対応が求められていた。そこで、30の動画内容について英語、中国語、韓国語、ベトナム語、インドネシア語の5か国語の翻訳を音声研究・教育に携わっている方に依頼し、多言語対応を行った。また、新たに「方言：宮崎のことば」の動画を撮影・編集し、3月末に同YouTubeサイトで公開した。

  • 特殊拍の学習メカニズムに関する実証的研究

    　本研究は，日本語の特殊拍を学習する際，音声情報が脳内の心的辞書にパターンとして保持されるのか，単語ごとに保持されるのかを縦断的に明らかにすることを目的とした。中国の大学で日本語を専攻する中国人日本語学習者7名を対象に，大学入学3か月後と2年後の大学3年時に特殊拍（長音・促音・撥音），リズム型，単語の種類（既知語・未知語・無意味語）を考慮した調査語54語の読み上げ調査を同じ手順で行い，その音声データを日本語音声専門家に5段階で評価してもらった。その結果，全体的に伸びが見られていること，2回目には全体的にリズムの習得度の伸びが見られていることリズムをパターン別に学習することが明らかになった。

    　本研究の目的は，第二言語リズムの学習メカニズムを明らかにするため，量的に測定可能なリズムの自動評価システムを開発することである。PVI（Pair-wised Variability Index; Grabe and Low 2002）は，母語から第二言語リズムへの習得過程を示すことができ（木下2011），聴覚印象との相関も確認されている（Kinoshitaほか2011）。そこで，音声分析ソフトPraatによりintensity，pitch，F1－F3を自動抽出し，特定した母音長，母音間長からPVI算出ができるようプログラミングし，日本語母語話者及び日本語学習者の発話を用いてその精度を検証した。
