The purpose of this study was to examine recent trends in research on physical education teachers' effective feedback, and to identify future research areas of interest. Several studies have indicated that frequent teachers' affirmative, corrective and specific feedback about students' motor learning has a significant positive relationship with increases in students' formative evaluation scores in physical education classes (e.g., Takahashi, Fukami, and others 1991-1997). Teacher feedback was also found to be a useful element for improving students' motor skills and performance. In recent years qualitative research on teaching methods in physical education has become accepted as a new research approach. However, with regards to teachers' feedback it is often difficult to discern whether qualitative research has been conducted, and in studies that do include qualitative aspects it is often left unclear what type of research was conducted and what the implications of the research results might be. In this study five recent books that deal with effective teaching of research on physical education were examined, and 31 suggestions concerning teachers' effective feedback were identified. We were particularly interested in the research methods and content of those dealing with experimental research, but found that this type of research was rather limited and that the content of actual physical education classes rarely played a part in the analysis. The vast majority of suggestions concerning feedback (23) presented in the examined studies were clearly the ideas and opinions of the researcher himself. In addition, we found that most experimental studies applied quantitative and qualitative methods simultaneously (5), while none of them relied exclusively on qualitative methods. These results lead us to conclude that it is necessary to examine the effectiveness of feedback based on a set of more meaningful indicators such as appropriateness and correctness of feedback in improving students' motor skills and performance as seen from the position of both teachers and students.

A study was conducted to examine relationships among the times allotted to each episode of teaching(instruction, management, motor learning, cognitive learning), the frequency of teacher feedback behavior, and student evaluation of physical education classes, in units of elementary school physical education.By analyzing these relationships, it was hoped to be able to find an effective transition pattern of episodes of teaching and teacher feedback behavior, thus improving the student evaluation score. The main findings were as follows:1)After analyzing 6 gymnastic units, 4 units showed the same tendency. In the first half of the units, teachers allotted plenty of time to instruction episodes. As the units continued, times for instruction episodes gradually decreased. Also, times for management episodes in the three units decreased in the latter half of the units. On the other hand, the time for motor learning episodes and the frequency of teacher feedback behavior increased slowly in the latter half of the units.Corresponding to these trends, student evaluation scores increased.2)However, 2 units did not show this tendency. In these units, the student evaluation scores did not increase. This was caused by two problem. One teacher with poor skills spent too much time on management and could not give enogh time to motor learning. In the other teacher, despite allowing enough time for motor learning and giving active feedback behavior, the learning task for students was too difficult to achieve.

     View Summary

The purpose of this study was to clarify the effective feedback behavior for teachers which produced better learning results in physical education classes. Data were collected during 42 elementary school physical education classes taught by 42 teachers. In a previous study (Takahashi et al., 1996), the expression modes of teacher's feedback, especially "two-way communication", "transmittable" and "sympathetic" showed significant correlations with student's formative evaluation of physical education classes. In this study we examined the relationships between teacher's feedback and their expression modes and student's awareness of them and their formative evaluation of physical education classes. The main findings were as follows: 1) "Positive feedback", "corrective feedback" and "specific feedback" given to student's skill learning showed significant correlations with student's awareness of teacher's feedback. 2) The expression modes, especially "transmittable", "sympathetic", "expression technique" and "verbal content" showed significant correlations with student's awareness of teacher's feedback. 3) The students who were aware of having received effective advice from the teacher evaluated physical education classes significantly higher than the others.. 4) Thus, we conclude that teacher's positive and corrective feedback with a specific content aimed at student's skill learning and their desirable expression modes would be accepted as effective advice by students, leading to better learning results.

    2023

     View Summary

We conducted a survey on current high school athletic club coaches regarding the method of player selection, which is important for both coaches and members to manage the team. The subjects were coaches of the high school athletic clubs. As a result of survey, the most common method of player selection is that the coach takes the initiative and listens to the thoughts and opinions of the members, and he selects the player based on them. Here, the coach presented the selection criteria that all the members should make an effort to in advance, and equally guaranteed the opportunity to be selected as a player for all members. Moreover, it was important selection criteria that not only the player's performance skills and achievements were high, but also that the player's attitude of training and school life were reliable and hard-working. It is considered that these selection criteria and procedures ensured the opportunity for all members to make independent efforts. Among the target high school athletic clubs, no team was found to democratically select players by exchanging opinions with members only. This is because it is very complicated and difficult to show fair and clear selection criteria and selection procedures to members, and to select players fairly and democratically in a diverse and large team. In addition, most of the technical and tactical play in the sports match is executed by the direction and sign of the coach. Therefore, it is considered that neither the coach nor the members feel uncomfortable when the coach selects a player. In the future research issue, it is necessary to examine how the member feels and evaluates the choice of players led by the coach.

    2011

     View Summary
