    The end of the British Empire in the mid-twentieth century was accompanied by a large-scale rearrangement of sensitive colonial records worldwide. A great number of these records were destroyed and a sizeable portion sent to Britain to be kept secret. This article advances studies of this policy, eventually code-named Operation Legacy', by reading the migrated archives' that have been newly discovered and declassified in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) 141 series. It asks where the policy was decided, for what reason and how it was carried out. Sources suggest that the policy was not planned in the Colonial Office in London and delivered to the colonies in a hierarchical fashion, but, rather, significant elements of the policy were developed in the colonial governments overseas in response to each local context. The general idea was to save Britain's honour and to protect its collaborators. However, the limitations in terms of time and manpower often prevented the officers from putting sufficient thought into the actual screening of the documents. At the same time, some officers demonstrated a level of historical awareness regarding their actions. The episode reminds us that the official mind as it relates to decolonisation is to be understood not only by reference to the highest levels of strategic planning but also in terms of how it worked at the lower levels, in the colonial administrations on the ground.

    This article re-examines our understanding of modern sport. Today, various physical cultures across the world are practised under the name of sport. Almost all of these sports originated in the West and expanded to the rest of the world. However, the history of judo confounds the diffusionist model. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, a Japanese educationalist amalgamated different martial arts and established judo not as a sport but as 'a way of life'. Today it is practised globally as an Olympic sport. Focusing on the changes in its rules during this period, this article demonstrates that the globalization of judo was accompanied by a constant evolution of its character. The overall 'sportification' of judo took place not as a diffusion but as a convergence - a point that is pertinent to the understanding of the global sportification of physical cultures, and also the standardization of cultures in modern times.

    Can we comprehend the end of the British Empire as a planned and logical process, or was it an accumulation of improvised decisions? Britain exercised significant influence over the southern coast of the Persian Gulf from the nineteenth century until January 1968, when it announced that it would withdraw its troops from the region. This withdrawal marked an end to Britain's overt influence in the Gulf, and led to the eventual emergence of Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates as full members of international society. This paper examines Britain's decision-making process that led to the withdrawal announcement. It argues that the withdrawal option was put under the spotlight in the context of the long-term economic retrenchment and rise of anti-imperialist voices, but that the final decision was inspired largely by contingent domestic political considerations. In contrast to the prevailing view that the withdrawal decision was taken by July 1967 as a result of Britain's effort to bring the ends of its foreign policy into line with the means, this paper highlights the more spontaneous aspect of the whole process. An examination of the sources suggests that the decision was reached only a few days before the announcement in January 1968, more as a justification for reducing domestic social expenditure than as a foreign policy initiative.

    The twentieth century was a period of imperial decline and national liberation, during which the Japanese and European empires retreated from around the world as dozens of their former colonies gained independence. Amid the decolonization processes, the aforementioned imperial powers are believed to have concealed many of the records of their unsavory past. While it is difficult to acquire a clear picture of how these acts of obfuscation took place, new information about the history of the British Empire is beginning to emerge. Drawing on newly-discovered sources, this research project examines how, throughout its colonies, the British Empire concealed and destroyed sensitive documents in the mid to late twentieth century, with a particular emphasis on the early stages of this process.

    This research analyzed the strategies adopted by Islamic universities in three cities in the Middle East, namely Cairo in Egypt, Median in Saudi Arabia, and at Qom in Iran, to attract international students. It was found that these universities recruited students mostly through religious schools in Asia and Africa where graduates of these universities were engaged in teaching. Although graduates of these universities disseminated the knowledge gained from Islamic Universities in the Middle East as authentic when they returned to their country of origin, in the places where they were engaged in teaching, they preferred to adapt their religious knowledge to the local religious circumstances.

  • 味のヒエラルキー：近現代世界における食の嗜好の変化についての基礎的研究

      本研究のテーマは、近現代世界における食の嗜好の変化である。食の嗜好の変化については、ヒトの移動とモノの流通、冷凍保存など科学技術の発展という側面からこれまで説明が加えられてきた。他方で、こうしたハードな要因だけでは捉えきれない、よりソフトな側面も存在する。例えば日本では、移民の規模や歴史的な交流の深さに反して、フランス料理の方がブラジル料理やフィリピン料理よりも圧倒的に人気が高い。この乖離は、日本社会における文化ヒエラルキーに踏み込むことなく有効に説明できないだろう。　本研究では、こうした食の嗜好における文化的な側面に光を当てることを試みた。調査を通じて、帝国主義と脱植民地化というキーワードが見えてきた。すなわち、食という日常の暮らしの中にあるものを、近現代における大きな政治・社会的な変化から読み解くことができるのではないかという方向性である。本研究では基礎的な調査を行ったが、今後はより具体的な研究状況のサーベイや、実証的な調査にも挑戦したい。また、オリエンタリズムという視点から説明を試みることの有用性についても将来的には検討したい。

    　現在、世界の人口の4分の1がイスラーム教徒であると言われており、今世紀中にはその数はキリスト教徒を上まわる見込みだという説もある。世界的な趨勢と呼応するように、日本おけるイスラーム教徒の数も年々増加しており、今やイスラーム教徒は日本社会の不可欠な一員である。その一方で、イスラームに縁遠さを感じている人々が日本に多くいるのも事実である。こうした問題意識から、本研究計画では、イスラーム教徒が暮らす日本社会がどのような課題を抱えているのかを問い、その一歩としてまずは基礎的な事実を整理し、また共生という考え方について批判的な検討を行った。
