  • Seismic Response Control of a Soft First-Story Building

    A structure with a building plane 7.75x8.35 m, 47.8 m high, and having a height/width aspect ratio exceeding 6 has a building response that is difficult to control in both seismic and wind loading. We therefore changed the vibration mode from rocking to swaying by softening first-story translation stiffness and concentrating building deformation to make the first story energy-absorbing. The soft first-story structure we introduce involves (1) stiffening the structure above the second story, (2) making first-story columns laterally flexible and axially rigid, and (3) developing a response-hardening oil damper. The sections below detail these structural elements and dynamic response control performance against wind and seismic loading through time-history response analysis.

  • Response control system with soft first story structure

    The building plane is 7.75 m x 8.35 m and the height is 47.8 m. As the result, it became difficult to control the building response for not only seismic loading but also wind loading. So, we planed to change the vibration mode from the rocking-mode to the sway-mode by softening the translation stiffness at the first story, and to make the first story into the energy-absorbing story by concentrating the building deformation. We call this system the soft first story structure. The system consists of the following three items; (a) to stiffen the structure above the second story, (b) to make columns of the first story flexible laterally and rigid axially, (c) to develop the hardening-type oil-damper. In this paper, it is reported about details of these structural elements and the dynamic performance of the proposed response control system against wind and seismic loadings throughout the time history response analysis.

    Wind-induced inelastic response characteristics and stochastic methods to predict those responses were reported in previous papers, Ref. [1], [2], [3]. One-mass system was used in those studies on assumptions that the first mode of structures is predominant in wind-induced motion and the change of the mode shape is negligible after yielding of the structural frame or hysteretic dampers. Applying stochastic methods proposed for one-mass system to practical buildings, it must be studied on effects of higher mode motion and on concentration into weak stories concerning excess deformation and hysteretic damping energy. In this paper, first, response characteristics of inelastic multi-mass system are described through results of time history response analysis. Next, for the multi-mass system, a stochastic method to predict inelastic response of each story is proposed by extending the previous method for one-mass system.

    For tall buildings and for buildings in which response control systems by hysteretic damping of steel are installed, it is important to understand inelastic response characteristics of buildings under wind loading. Inelastic response characteristics and response prediction method under across-wind loading were reoorted in the previous paper, Part 1. But, from the nature of across-wind loading, it was not confirmed how the mean wind loading and the low frequency component in wind force have an effect on the inelastic response. In this paper, inelastic response characteristics, e.g. the transition of the mean displacement, the distribution of the fluctuating displacement, the maximum fluctuating displacement, the absorbed energy and so on, under along-wind loading are investigated through time history response analyses by using a single-degree-of-freedom system. And, a stochastic method of estimating the inelastic response under along-wind loading, by extending the method for across-wind vibration, is proposed.

    As buildings have become higher, it is likely to find the wind loads that is equal to or even greater than the design seismic loads. Also, response control systems by hysteretic damping of steel have been developed for the aim of the response control or the damage control during seismic excitation. Then the subject that structural members yield under wind loading will become more important on structural design. In this paper, to assure the safety of buildings with the yielding members under wind loading, inelastic response characteristics, e. g. the distributions of the fluctuating displacement, the maximum displacement, the absorbed energy and so on, under across-wind loading are investigated quantitatively through time history response analyses by using a single-degree-of-freedom system. And a stochastic method of estimating the inelastic responses under wind loading so as to be available for the evaluation of fatigue-damage is proposed on the basis of the zero-crossing peak-value distribution. It is confirmed that the predicted inelastic responses almost agree with the results of simulation.

  • 持続可能な弾性体としての超々高層建築物を実現する制振システムに関する研究

    持続可能な都市化の実現を目指す今、過密化した都市からゆとりのある住空間が求められているが、従来型の超高層ビルの設計では、巨大地震動や巨大台風に対して構造体の一部を塑性化させている場合が多い。このような超高層ビルでは、巨大地震後にスクラップ・アンド・ビルトを繰り返すことになり、持続可能な都市の実現とは言えない。近い将来にビル機能を集約し、国際レベルの400m級以上の超々高層ビルの設計・建設を計画するときには完全弾性体として構造体が望まれるべきである。そのためには制振構造による応答制御技術が不可欠となる。本研究では、弾性体としての超々高層ビルに望ましい架構システムの在り方について分析した。

    The concentrated damping structure is to control the response of a building by centrally installing a damper on a specific story. With the spread of the idea of damage control design in recent years, it is in the rapid increase of the building which adopted the base isolation structure and the response control structure. In this study, we analyzed the response characteristics of the concentrated damping structure. We tried to replace a tall building into a multi-mass model with bending and shear stiffness, and further integrate it into a two-mass model. The time history analysis using earthquake ground motion was performed on the two models, and the response quantities such as deformation matched, so the effectiveness of the simplified two mass model was clarified. The equivalent energy absorption model in which dampers are arranged in each layer is compared with the amount of attenuation when the amount of response of the concentrated energy absorption type in which the dampers are integrated is the same, the amount of attenuation of concentrated energy intensive type is small. It was clarified that it was possible to show the usefulness of the concentrated damping structure.
