    This study examined the effect of the dark triad personality traits of Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy on motives for deceptive impression management in consideration of gender differences. An online survey was conducted with 121 Japanese university students (57 men, 64 women), who completed the Short Dark Triad-Japanese version and the Acting in Daily Life Scale. Multiple-group structural equation modeling results were as follows: (a) Men with high Machiavellianism scored lower on relationship maintenance and relationship acquisition than women with high Machiavellianism did; (b) narcissism was positively associated with relationship acquisition in men, whereas in women, narcissism was negatively associated with difficult situations; and (c) in both men and women, psychopathy was negatively associated with relationship acquisition. The findings suggest that the effects of the dark triad of personality on deceptive impression management in daily life are gender-specific and dependent on cost estimates.

    <p>本研究では生きがい対象と精神的健康との関連について、居住地域（都市・郊外・地方）と年代（高齢者・中年者）に配慮しながら検討した。分析対象者は、年金シニアプラン総合研究機構が実施した「第６回サラリーマンの生活と生きがいに関する調査」に参加した、男女中高年4932名であった。</p><p> まず、生きがい対象を選択した人の割合を地域、年代別に検討した結果、郊外地域では「自然とのふれあい」に生きがいを感じる人が多い一方、「社会活動」と「仕事」に生きがいを感じる人が少なかった。また、高齢者は中年者よりも多くの対象に生きがいを感じていた。さらに、12項目の生きがい対象を再分類した結果、「他者交流」「人間関係」「個人活動」の３つのカテゴリに分かれた。３つのカテゴリを用いて年代別に精神的健康との関連の地域差を検討した結果、地域と年代にかかわらず、「人間関係」に生きがいを感じる場合は精神的健康が良好であった。中年者では郊外において、「個人活動」に生きがいを感じる場合は精神的健康が良好であった。高齢者では、地方において「個人活動」に生きがいを感じることは精神的健康を不良にすること、一方で都市と郊外において「他者交流」に生きがいを感じることは年代にかかわらず精神的健康を良好にすることが明らかになった。本研究の結果から、年代や地域に合わせた生きがい推進施策の重要性が示唆された。</p>

    Personality may be among the factors contributing to individual differences in altruism. Given that explanations of altruistic behavior differ according to the relationship between actors and recipients, the personality traits contributing to altruist behavior may differ according to the relationship between the parties involved. However, few studies on the effect of personality on altruism have examined the relationship between donor and recipient, and no study has addressed altruistic behavior in daily life. We employed the Self-Report Altruism Scale Distinguished by the Recipient, which was newly developed to evaluate altruism among Japanese undergraduates, to investigate the relationship between the Big-Five personality traits and the frequency of altruistic behaviors toward various recipients (family members, friends or acquaintances, and strangers) in daily life. With the exception of extraversion, which commonly contributed to altruistic behavior toward all three types of recipients, the particular traits that contributed to altruism differed according to recipient. Conscientiousness contributed to altruism only toward family members, agreeableness contributed to altruism only toward friends/acquaintances, and openness contributed to altruism only toward strangers.     The purpose of the study was to examine whether coresidence with parents affects the reproductive success of daughters in modern Japanese society. In Study 1, I tested whether women who were living with parents at the time of marriage would experience earlier first childbirth. In Study 2, I tested whether women who were living with parents when their firstborn child was young would experience earlier second childbirth. Cox regression models were used to estimate the relative risk of reproduction, taking into account several potential confounders. The results indicated that parents-in-law, especially mothers-in-law (i.e., the husband's mother), exerted the strong positive effects on the reproduction of daughters. These findings imply that, in a traditionally patrilocal country such as Japan, the relationship between mother- and daughter-in-law influences reproductive success more than that between biological mother and daughter. It is thus necessary to consider cultural context when testing the impact of grandparental investment in modern society.

    This study examined the moderating effects of social support in a fall prevention program for community-dwelling older adults. Twenty-six Japanese older adults age 65 and older participated in a 2-month exercise program and were measured in anthropometrical, physical, and psychological functioning at baseline, 2 months (intervention termination), and 5 months (3 months after intervention termination). Analyses indicated that the program did not improve participants' body mass index, balance, or walking speed. However, participants'falls self-efficacy significantly increased from baseline to intervention termination and was maintained at a higher level at the 5-month postintervention follow up. This efficacy-improving effect was prominent in the participants who had received less social support at baseline. The findings emphasized the importance of considering participants' social resources and targeted intervention outcomes when evaluating the effect of exercise.

    This study examined associations between physical activity and depressive symptoms in 1.151 community-dwelling adults in Japan. Physical activity was measured using a pedometer, whereas depressive symptoms were assessed with the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale. A structural equation modeling with a cross-lagged panel design revealed that for the older adults (65-79 years of age), daily walking at baseline predicted fewer depressive symptoms at the 2-year follow-up, even after adjusting for confounders. In contrast, the association was not confirmed for the middle-aged adults (40-64 years of age). Findings suggest that age should be considered when estimating the effect of physical activity on psychological well-being.

    In this study, we compared the impact of health problems (HPs) on everyday activities and depressive symptoms between middle-aged and older adults. We also examined what type and source of social interactions moderate the noxious effects of HPs. Longitudinal analyses of data with 1,802 Japanese community-dwelling adults indicated that HPs were significantly related to (a) an increase in depressive symptoms among middle-aged adults and (b) a decline in everyday activities among older adults. The former was buffered by emotional family support, whereas the latter (b) was buffered by instrumental family support and, surprisingly, by negative interactions with family. In contrast, social interactions with other friends and acquaintances did not show any moderating effect.

    This study examined the relationships among life stress, social exchanges with family members, and depressive symptoms in Japanese middle-aged and elderly adults. Subjects (N=2,010), comprised the first wave participants of the National Institute for Longevity Sciences-Longitudinal Study of Aging (NILS-LSA) ages 40 years and over. Hierarchical regression analysis showed first that positive exchanges with family had the effect of decreasing depressive symptoms, whereas negative exchanges had the inverse effect of increasing depressive symptoms (the former effect was greater than the latter). In addition, negative exchanges also interacted with life stress ; increased depressive symptoms were only related to negative exchanges for participants who reported medium or lower levels of stress. These findings suggest the unique characteristics of positive and negative social exchanges with life stress and psychological health.

    The purpose of this article was to expand past research by examining relationships between age awareness and related factors in Japanese middle-aged and elderly people. The subjects were 1, 129 participants (575 men and 554 women, aged 40 to 79 years) of the National Institute for Longevity Sciences-Longitudinal Study of Aging (NILS-LSA). They were examined with a questionnaire and interview. As a result, chronological age, self-rated health, and visual and hearing ability tend to be the related factors for awareness of aging. Comparing the demographic and physiological factors, however, major life events, difficulties and daily life experiences showed a stronger influence on age awareness. These results provide an interesting basis for the future understanding of adult development and the meaning of aging. J Epidemiol, 2000 ; 10 : S56-S62.

    We examined the relationship among social support, self-esteem, and depression. The subjects were 1,116 Japanese community-dwelling adults aged between 40-79, who were the first wave participants of the National Institute for Longevity Sciences-Longitudinal Study of Aging (NILS-LSA). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were performed on the Rosenberg's self-esteem scale that supported the superiority of the bi-dimensional structure of the scale marked by self-confidence and self-deprecation subscales. The subsequent causal analyses, using structural equation modeling, demonstrated that social support reduced depressed affect through an increase in self-confidence and a decrease in self-deprecation. By contrast, social support did not show a direct effect on depressed affect. The findings suggest the importance of esteem-improving elements of social support in reducing depressive symptoms.

    While research on micro social relationships has notable implications that social support can influence an individual’s health, more attention is now being directed toward the influences of an individual’s macro social relationships with the community, i.e., social capital. In one of our main studies we examined the relationship between reciprocity among community dwelling adults and self-rated health by analyzing data from a survey conducted every 5 years between 1991 and 2011 in Japan. A multi-level analysis showed that both at the individual and group levels, higher reciprocity was associated with higher self-rated health. However, there was an interaction effect involving reciprocity at two levels: a stronger correlation between individual reciprocity and self-rated health was observed for individuals from a recent cohort with a low level of group reciprocity

    The grandmother hypothesis is a theory that posits that female post-reproductive life has been prolonged as it helps increase reproductive success of their adult children. In our studies, however, the parent whose presence exerted positive effects on the reproduction of daughters(earlier birth of the first child and shorter inter-birth interval between the first and second children), was the mother-in-law(husband's mother). The implication of the findings is that, in a traditionally patrilocal country such as Japan, the relationship between mother-and daughter-in-law influences the reproductive success more than the relationship between biological mother-and daughter. It is thus necessary to take cultural context into consideration when testing the grandmother hypothesis in modern society

    This study examined the moderating effects of social support in a fall prevention program for community-dwelling older adults. Twenty-six Japanese older adults age 65 and older participated in a 2-month exercise program and were measured in anthropometrical, physical, and psychological functioning at baseline, 2 months (intervention termination), and 5 months (3 months after intervention termination). Analyses indicated that the program did not improve participants' body mass index, balance, or walking speed. However, participants'falls self-efficacy significantly increased from baseline to intervention termination and was maintained at a higher level at the 5-month postintervention follow up. This efficacy-improving effect was prominent in the participants who had received less social support at baseline. The findings emphasized the importance of considering participants' social resources and targeted intervention outcomes when evaluating the effect of exercise.

    The purpose of this longitudinal study was to examine the moderating effects of age and social support from family members in the relationship between the bereavement of friends and depression. The participants were 1 402 Japanese community-dwelling men and women aged between 40 and 79 years, who had done the baseline and the two-year follow-up surveys of the National Institute for Longevity Sciences-Longitudinal Study of Aging (NILS-LSA). By using hierarchical multiple regression analysis, we detected a significant interaction between age, social support from family members, and the bereavement of friends. Younger participants who were receiving less support from family members after the loss of friends showed significantly higher depression scores.

We also examined what type and source of social interactions moderate the noxious effects of HPs. Longitudinal analyses of data with 1,802 Japanese community-dwelling adults indicated that HPs were significantly related to (a) an increase in depressive symptoms among middle-aged adults and (b) a decline in everyday activities among older adults. The former was buffered by emotional family support, whereas the latter (b) was buffered by instrumental family support and, surprisingly, by negative interactions with family. In contrast, social interactions with other friends and acquaintances did not show any moderating effect.

    This study was conducted to identify factors associated with depressive symptoms among males and females in two age groups
    the middle-aged (40-59 years) and elderly (60-79 years). Subjects were 2 211 community-dwelling people (1 115 males and 1 096 females). Depressive symptoms were estimated by Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). Marital status, self-rated health, activities of daily living, age awareness, locus of control, and social support were assessed using self-administered questionnaires and interviews. In all groups, poor subjective health and external locus of control showed significant positive association with depressive symptoms. Age awareness was associated with depressive symptoms in female groups. Impairment of instrumental activities of daily living and lower social support were associated with depressive symptoms in the elderly groups. The findings suggested that there might be age and gender differences in the impact of factors associated with depressive symptoms.

    This study examined the short-term effects of shift work on mood changes. The subjects were 1 608 Japanese female nurses, working on rotating 3-shift schedules consisted of day, evening, and night shift. Repeated measurements of six dimensions of mood and sleep hours in four consecutive days were analyzed. Prominent changes of subjective fatigue, activity and confusion were observed especially when shift changes occurred (e.g., day shift to night shift or night shift to evening shift). The changes of mood were contingent to those of sleep hours, which suggested the close association between them. However, the mood changes were observed even after adjusting for the effect of sleep hours, indicating that irregular sleep pattern is not the only cause that affects mood.

    This study examined the relationships among life stress, social exchanges with family members, and depressive symptoms in Japanese middle-aged and elderly adults. Subjects (N=2,010), comprised the first wave participants of the National Institute for Longevity Sciences-Longitudinal Study of Aging (NILS-LSA) ages 40 years and over. Hierarchical regression analysis showed first that positive exchanges with family had the effect of decreasing depressive symptoms, whereas negative exchanges had the inverse effect of increasing depressive symptoms (the former effect was greater than the latter). In addition, negative exchanges also interacted with life stress ; increased depressive symptoms were only related to negative exchanges for participants who reported medium or lower levels of stress. These findings suggest the unique characteristics of positive and negative social exchanges with life stress and psychological health.

The subjects were 1, 129 participants (575 men and 554 women, aged 40 to 79 years) of the National Institute for Longevity Sciences-Longitudinal Study of Aging (NILS-LSA). They were examined with a questionnaire and interview. As a result, chronological age, self-rated health, and visual and hearing ability tend to be the related factors for awareness of aging. Comparing the demographic and physiological factors, however, major life events, difficulties and daily life experiences showed a stronger influence on age awareness.     We examined the relationship among social support, self-esteem, and depression. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were performed on the Rosenberg's self-esteem scale that supported the superiority of the bi-dimensional structure of the scale marked by self-confidence and self-deprecation subscales. The subsequent causal analyses, using structural equation modeling, demonstrated that social support reduced depressed affect through an increase in self-confidence and a decrease in self-deprecation. By contrast, social support did not show a direct effect on depressed affect. The findings suggest the importance of esteem-improving elements of social support in reducing depressive symptoms.

    　クロノタイプは，個人の毎日の活動パターンを反映する睡眠と覚醒のサイクルである．一般に夜型の人は昼型の人よりも健康リスクが高いことが示唆されている．ただし，クロノタイプは生来の特性にも関係することが指摘されている．そこで本研究では，クロノタイプと身体的および精神的健康との関係を検討した．　ウェブ調査により，日本人大学生計146名がからデータを得た．回答の質に配慮し，131名（男性44名，女性87名：18～27歳）のデータを分析対象とした． 測定した変数は以下のとおりである．1) Munich Chrono Type Questionnaire (MCTQ: Roenneberg et al., 2003)，2) 肥満度(BMI: 自己申告の身長と体重から計算)，3) 認知反射テスト (CRT: Frederick，2005）．研究仮説は以下のとおりであった．1)朝型の学生に比べて夜型の学生のBMIが高い，2)参加者が自分のクロノタイプと一致する時間でテストを受けた場合，被験者のCRTスコアが向上する．　得られたデータを解析したところ，以下の結果が得られた．1)朝型学生の割合は，男性（31.8％）よりも女性（49.4％）の方が有意に高かった．2)朝型男性は夜型男性に比べて BMI が有意に高かった．3)朝型女性は夜型女性に比べてBMIが有意に低かった．4)自身のクロノタイプと一致する時間にCRTを受けた男性は高い成績を示したが，女性にはそのような傾向が見られなかった．　本研究の結果は，クロノタイプがBMIおよびCRTスコアと関連することを示すものである．ただしその関連は性別やタスクの実行時間によって調整されることも明らかとなった．研究者は身体的および精神的健康に対するクロノタイプの影響を調査する際に，これらの要因を考慮する必要がある．

    　Stereotype content model (Fiske et al., 2002)によれば，人は高齢者を「憐み」や「慈しみ」の対象として判断する傾向にあるが，この背景には，高齢者は「温厚だが無能」であるというイメージ，すなわちステレオタイプ（偏見）が働いているという．そこで本研究では，若者の高齢者に対するイメージと無意識的な偏見との関連について検討した．方法：フィリピンの大学生69名（男性22名，女性47名，18～21歳）を対象とした調査と実験を行い，得られたデータを分析した．高齢者に対する潜在的偏見傾向はImplicit Association Test (Greenwald et al., 1998)を用いて測定した．高齢者に対するイメージは，「温厚さ」「有能さ」の各次元について，それぞれ０（冷たい/無能）～10（温かい/有能）のリッカート尺度で評価を求めた．　結果：IATのd値を基準変数とし，「温厚さ」，「有能さ」，および両者の交互作用項を説明変数とする重回帰分析を行った．この結果，「温厚さ」の有意な主効果が認められ，高齢者が温厚であるというイメージを有する者ほど，高齢者に対する潜在的な偏見傾向が強いことが明らかとなった（p &lt;.001）．さらに，「温厚さ」と「有能さ」の交互作用行も有意となった(p &lt; .001)．そこで下位検定を行ったところ，高齢者が温厚であるというイメージが高齢者に対する潜在的な偏見傾向を高める効果は，高齢者が有能であるというイメージを有する場合に，とりわけ強く認められることが明らかとなった．　結論：本研究の結果は，高齢者への態度に対しては，「有能さ」よりも「温厚さ」の方が強い影響を与える，という先行研究の知見を支持するものである．この結果を進化心理学の観点から考えると，個人の適応（生存）に対しては，他人が自分にとって「良い対象か悪い」対象か」という「温厚さの判断」が，自分にとって「役に立つ対象であるか否か」という「有能さの判断」よりも重要であることを示唆するものである．

    　怒りや嫌悪などの感情は，ヒトが進化の過程で備えてきた心の機能（行動免疫）であり，その究極の目的は，個体の生存や繁殖の成功度（適応）を最大化することである．行動免疫（Behavioral Immune System）は，白血球がウィルスを攻撃するのと同様に，個人の適応を脅かす（と判断された）異物や外敵を排除するための心的メカニズムであることから，時に外国人やマイノリティなど，自身と異なる属性を持つ対象や文化への否定的感情（差別意識）を発現させる可能性が指摘されている．本研究では，日本，フィリピン，マレーシアの高齢者差別（エイジズム）の特徴を比較し，さらには，エイジズム傾向と行動免疫との関連について検討することを目的とした．　日比馬の3国で同一内容の質問紙調査を行い，計1,142名の大学生からデータを得た．これらのデータを分析したところ，以下の結果が示された．１）日本とフィリピンでは男性が女性よりもエイジズム傾向が強い．２）マレーシアでは，女性が男性と同程度のエイジズム傾向を有する．３）自国の高齢化率（全人口に対する65歳以上人口の割合）に関して，男女ともに，日本は過小評価，マレーシアは過大評価の傾向がある．フィリピンは３国の中で最も正確に自国の高齢化率を認識している．４）マレーシア女性は，自国の高齢化率を正確に理解している場合にエイジズム傾向が低い．５）マレーシアとフィリピンの男性では，行動免疫特性が強いほどエイジズム傾向が高い．　以上の結果から，個人の行動免疫特性が少なくとも部分的にはエイジズム傾向と関連することが明らかとなった．さらに，高齢者や社会の高齢化に関する正確な知識を身に着けることが，行動免疫に起因する差別や偏見の発現を抑制する可能性も示唆された．

    　本研究は，地域の健康教室に参加する高齢者の対人関係の分析を通じて，社会的ネットワークがQOLに影響するメカニズムを検証することを目的として計画された．　聖路加看護大学老年看護学教室が介護予防の試みの一つとして行っている転倒予防教育講座「SAFETY on! 12週間プログラム」に参加している高齢者を対象として，2013年8月（プログラム開始時）に面接調査を行った．調査項目はプログラム参加者同士の親密さの程度，QOL（生活の質），ソーシャルキャピタル，健康状態などであった．つづいて11月（プログラム終了時）にも同一対象者に面接調査を行い，プログラム参加者同士の親密さの程度，QOL，健康状態を測定した．　これらのデータを社会的ネットワーク分析（Social Network Analysis: SNA）という手法で解析した．はじめに参加者同士の親密さに応じたネットワークを可視化し，教室参加者の関係性を検討した．その結果，密度や推移性といった指標の値は，プログラム開始時よりプログラム終了時が高く，プログラムへ参加によって親密なネットワークが形成されることが確認された．また，QOLの平均値も，プログラム開始時よりプログラム終了時が有意に高かったことから，プログラムへの参加を通じたネットワークの充実が，参加者のQOLの向上に資する可能性が示唆された．　つづいて，情報中心性が次数中心性や媒介中心性といった指標を算出し比較したところ，先行研究と同様，情報中心性が次数中心性や媒介中心性よりも参加者のネットワーク内の位置を鋭敏に反映する指標であることが示された．　なお，本研究は2014年の夏に同一対象者に対する第三回目の追跡的調査を予定している．これにより，プログラムの開始時と終了時の短期的な社会的ネットワークの変容のみならず，長期的な維持や変容の過程を検証し，健康やQOLへの影響を検討する．得られた研究成果は，国内外の学会や学術雑誌にて随時報告・発表していく予定である．

    １．若者の高齢社会に対する意識－大学生の調査結果－ 大学生の「高齢者イメ－ジ」「高齢社会イメ－ジ」「老親扶養義務感」「年をとること」に関する意識に関する調査から，以下の点が明らかとなった．1.高齢者の「外見的な活発さ」に対して否定的なイメージ(遅い・弱い・さびしい・地味な)をもつ．2.高齢者イメ－ジは，高齢者と接する機会の多さや「年をとること」への意識に影響を受ける一方で，高齢社会イメ－ジは，社会観(社会の見方)の影響を受ける．3.高齢社会への負担感の低さ(介護や支援を負担に思わないこと)が扶養・介護の意識を高めている場合と，高齢社会に期待できないこと(社会に任せられないこと)が扶養・介護の義務感を高めている場合がある．２．地域在住高齢者の生きがいと知能：6年間の縦断的検討－LSI-K・CES-Dとの関連－ 中高年地域住民の縦断データを解析し，生活の主要な3領域（仕事・家庭・趣味）に生きがいを持つことが，その後の知能の変化に与える影響に関して検討を行った．この結果，男性においては，仕事や家庭での生きがいを持つことによって，結晶性知能を保持することができる可能性が示唆された．一方で，女性は，趣味の生きがいを持つことが，一部の認知機能と関連を示したが，6年間の変化への影響はなかった．３．婚姻動向からみる配偶選択の性差に関する検討 全国調査「戦後日本の家族の歩み」（日本家族社会学会）の個票データを二次分析した．この結果，先行研究と同様，総じて男性が女性より年上となる婚姻動向が確認された．さらに，男性では，結婚年齢が高いほど，また，初婚より再婚の場合に，配偶女性との年齢差が大きいことが明らかとなった．反対に女性では，結婚年齢が高いほど，配偶男性との年齢差が小さくなる傾向が認められた（初婚の場合のみ）．さらに，年下男性と結婚した女性は，年上男性と結婚した女性に比べて，離婚する割合が高いことも示された．
