早稲田大学国際教養学部准教授。専門は、日中関係論、国際関係論。2002年香港中文大学日本研究学科卒業。2004年同大学政治與行政學系修士課程（M.Phil.）修了。2009年早稲田大学にて博士号（学術）取得。主な著書に、Political Survival and Yasukuni in Japan’s relations with China (London: Routledge, 2017, Paperback, 2018)　(単著）;『军国主义复活了吗？：解读中日关系和日本安全』(邦訳：軍国主義は復活したのか？：日中関係と日本の安全保障)、（Hong Kong: Thinkers Publication，2006）(単著）など。英文研究論文/国際情勢分析は国際学術誌 The Pacific Review（英）, Pacific Affairs（カナダ）, East Asia Forum（豪）, Journal of Contermporary East Asia Studies（日） などに多数掲載されている。 研究分野： 日中関係論、日本の外交防衛政策、国内政治と外交政策のリンケージ、日中関係における誤認識と和解構築、戦略文化論、東アジアの国際関係と安全保障。

Mong CHEUNG is an associate professor of School of International Liberal Studies at Waseda University, Japan. He received his PhD degree in international relations from Waseda University and M.Phil degree in political science from the Chinese University of Hong Kong(CUHK). His research interests include contemporary Sino-Japanese relations, Japan’s foreign and security policy, foreign-domestic linkage in Chinese and Japanese foreign policy, misperception and reconcilitation in China-Japan relations, and comparative strategic culture. He is the author of Political Survival and Yasukuni in Japan`s Relations with China (London: Routledge, 2017, Paperback, 2018) . He has published widely in peer-reviewed international journals such as The Pacific Review, Pacific Affairs, East Asia Forum, Journal of Contemporary East Asian Studies. He serves as a peer reviewer for several international academic journals such as International Relations of the Asia-Pacific, Journal of Contemporary East Asian Studies.

日本早稻田大學國際教養學部准教授, 《Journal of Contemporary East Asia Studies》 編委。2002年畢業於香港中文大學日本研究學系，2004年獲同校政治與行政學系政治學碩士學位。2009年獲早稻田大學國際關系學博士學位。主要研究領域包括：中日關系，日本外交和安全政策，中日關系中的內政與外交政策聯動，中日關系中的誤認知與和解構建，戰略文化和東北亞安全保障，國際關系理論。主要著作包括：Political Survival and Yasukuni in Japan‘s relations with China  (「政治生存」與日本對華關系中的靖國問題) (London: Routledge, 2017); 《軍國主義復活了嗎？：解讀中日關系和日本安全》（2006）。 其學術論文見於 The Pacific Review, Pacific Affairs, East Asia Forum, Journal of Contemporary East Asian Studies,《國際安全研究》等國際知名學術刊物。其亦是香港《明報》“日本內望”欄目的專欄作家。

    What role does the political survival of prime ministers play in Japan’s relations with China over the Yasukuni issue? Three Japanese prime ministers, including Nakasone Yasuhiro, Hashimoto Ryutaro and Abe Shinzo, complied with China’s demands and stopped visiting the controversial Shrine in 1986, 1997 and 2007, respectively. By contrast, the Yasukuni controversy intensified between 2001 and 2006 when a popular Prime Minister Koizumi Junichiro was determined to pay regular homage to the Yasukuni Shrine annually. Prime Minister Abe, who previously demonstrated restraint over the issue in his first term between 2006 and 2007, visited the Yasukuni unexpectedly in 2013 but not in 2014 or 2015. To explain this variation, this book presents an alternative interpretation of Japan’s official responses toward China’s pressure over the Yasukuni issue between 1985 and 2015 by applying a political survival approach that highlights the domestic political legitimacy of the Japanese prime minister or the ruling party.This book will be of great interest to students and researchers of Sino-Japanese relations, Japan’s foreign policy and international relations.

    -Achievements: In this fiscal year, three major achievements have been accomplished: 1) Participation of an international conference on China-Japan relations that is jointly organized by the Waseda Institute of Contemporay Chinese Studies and Fudan University in Shanghai. During the conference , I gave a presentation related to China-Japan relations, particularly in the context of US-Japan-China relations and new Trump administration since 2017. Chinese scholars from Fudan University gave an insightful perspective on how Chinese side view Japan and US-Japan relations in East Asia and South China Sea in recent years. 2) Accomplishment of translation and proofreading of my articles and book related to China-Japan relations. 3) One article related to China-Japan relations was accepted to publish in China in 2019.<BR>-Unexpected Obstacles: I have originally scheduled to visit mainland or Hong Kong around February 2020. The purpose of the research trip is to conduct the final round of data collection and plan to negotiate with possible publishers. However, due to the unexpected outbreak of Covid-19 in early 2020, the research trip has to be canceled urgently due to the consideration of individual security

    The research examines the influence ofdomestic politics to Chinese foreign relations with Japan in the 2010s. By examining two casesafter the Chinese fishing trawler collision incident in 2010 and improvementsof China-Japan relations since 2013, this research offers an alternativeinterpretation to China’s Japan policy in the post-Cold War era by highlightingdomestic legitimacy of political leaders and the power rivalry within theChinese Communist Party (CCP).
