Profile
My main research interests are in corpus linguistics, educational technology, and applications of natural language processing in foreign language teaching. Continuing from my Masters work in genre analysis, I developed software to automatically analyze texts at the sentence and discourse level for my PhD. Since then, I have been developing educational software for use by researchers, teachers, and learners in corpus linguistics, including AntConc, a freeware concordancer, AntWordProfiler, a freeware vocabulary profiler, and more recently web-based monolingual and parallel concordancers. I also participate in joint projects with researchers in the fields of science and engineering, where I act in a number of roles, sometimes serving as a technical advisor and other times as a technical writer. To date, these projects have been related to organic chemistry, mechanical engineering, and applications of machine learning techniques in computer security systems and web search systems. I also work with several national and international companies in the development of commercial software applications, and as a consultant on technical writing and presentation.

Corpus linguistics can provide curriculum developers and teachers with theoretical foundations and guidance when deciding learning objectives, identifying materials and methods, and evaluating learner outputs. In this Exposition piece, we discuss how corpus linguistics can inform EFL language teaching in the areas of materials creation, skill development (reading, writing, speaking, and listening), and evaluation, with special attention given to lexico-grammar and vocabulary. We also provide examples from courses delivered at Waseda University to illustrate these approaches. コーパス言語学は、カリキュラム開発者と教師に学習目標の決定、教材と教育方法の特定、学習者の成果の評価を行う際の理論的基礎とガイダンスを提供します。この解説記事では、語彙文法に注意を払いながらコーパス言語学が資料作成、スキル開発 (読み書き、スピーキング、リスニング) および評価の分野におけるEFL言語教育にどのように役立つかを解説します。 また、これらのアプローチを解説するために、早稲田大学で実施されているコースの例も紹介します。

The appropriate unit for counting and evaluating lexical knowledge in vocabulary studies is a topic of ongoing debate. Many researchers adopt a word family approach, while others have suggested that a lemma or flemma approach might be more suitable depending on the learner group (e.g., McLean, 2018). Recently, attention has shifted to the importance of varying the lexical unit depending on the pedagogical purpose and learner variables (e.g., Cobb & Laufer, 2021; Webb, 2021), an idea first proposed by Bauer and Nation (1993), who described seven graded levels of word family for systematic vocabulary teaching and learning. Such an approach is very important for languages including French, German, and Spanish that are declined or highly inflected. Learners of such languages with limited L2 grammatical knowledge, for example, may find mastering lemmas or flemmas more challenging than acquiring regular and transparent affixes. However, few profiling tools appear to offer this functionality. In response to these issues, this paper introduces MultilingProfiler (Finlayson et al., 2022), an adaptive, multilingual vocabulary profiling tool that is designed to give vocabulary researchers and materials developers more control over the lexical unit used to create vocabulary profiles. With MultilingProfiler, users can select which inflected and derived forms to include in their word definition or choose a pre-made word list that aligns with the grammar specifications of a particular curriculum or stage in a program of study. In the paper, we show how MultilingProfiler has already proved valuable in the creation of nationwide language examinations in the UK.

One of the most transparent and effective ways to assess the readability of texts is to profile their vocabulary content and determine the vocabulary coverage for different threshold levels. In an English setting, if a learner is known to have a vocabulary knowledge of say 5000 word items and those items cover over 95-98% of the vocabulary in a target text, research suggests that the text will be comprehensible without the need for glosses or dictionaries. However, mapping these findings to texts in non-English settings is far from trivial. In this talk, I will first review the basic principles of vocabulary profiling and introduce online and offline tools that are commonly used for this task. Next, I will discuss some of the main challenges that researchers face when profiling the vocabulary of low resourced languages, especially those where even the concept of a word is not always clear. Then, I will demonstrate some novel tools created for vocabulary profiling of modern foreign languages in the UK national curriculum that were designed specifically to overcome some of these issues. Finally, I will offer suggestions for developers of software tools that can hopefully advance the research on low resourced languages.

Large Language Models (LLMs) have the potential to play a pivotal role in corpus linguistics research, providing a deep and nuanced view of language use in a variety of domains and registers. Current implementations of LLMs, such as ChatGPT, are built using massive amounts of language data and can be easily accessed through web interfaces and application programming interfaces (APIs). However, when these models are prompted for insights on language, it can be difficult to evaluate what specific data informs the responses or even how accurate the responses are due to 'hallucinations' (i.e., errors in the model output). Here, we show how LLMs can be integrated into a traditional corpus analysis toolkit, allowing them to be linked directly to target corpora. When used in this way, LLMs can be prompted to query individual corpus files or the entire corpus. They can also be prompted for insights on the results of traditional corpus tools, such as KWIC concordancers, offering a completely new view of the data. The risk of 'hallucinations' is still present, but this phenomenon can be greatly reduced through prompt engineering, and the insights offered by the LLM can be checked using direct links back to the target corpus.

Abstract: For linguists working with corpora, a common difficulty after quantitative analysis is deciding which texts to select for follow-up, close analysis, without arousing suspicion of ‘cherry-picking’. The ProtAnt tool (Anthony & Baker 2015) provides a major boost in this respect. Building on a now well-established tradition of corpus keywords analysis (since Scott 1997), and the association between prototypes and frequency of instantiation (e.g., Rosch 1975, Gries 2003), ProtAnt ranks the texts in a target corpus from most to least prototypical according to the number of keywords they contain. ProtAnt’s capabilities have been increasingly exploited in text/discourse analysis (e.g., Levon 2016, Bednarek and Caple 2017, Price 2022), but to date, all such studies have been confined to traditional lexical-based keywords, rather than keywords generated at other linguistic levels such as parts of speech (POS), semantic domains, and speech acts. The current paper seeks to address this research gap, posing the question: How successfully can ProtAnt identify prototypical and outlier texts in corpora at various non-lexical linguistic levels? We address this question through a series of experiments. Results show that ProtAnt is able to use key POS-tags to identify stylistically prototypical texts in registers of the American AmE06 corpus and also flag outlier texts that have been artificially included from another register. Using semantic tags, outliers are identified with still higher success. Other results show that speech act tags (in SPICE-Ireland) yield more mixed results. On the whole, non-lexical key items are able to complement those at the lexical level in profiling texts, with success seemingly affected by the granularity of the tags, accuracy of the linguistic annotations, and degree of specialization of the register. We discuss the theoretical and practical implications of our work in areas such as grammar, stylistics, discourse analysis, and data-driven learning (DDL).

Singlish is a creole language that combines English with other languages and dialects in Singapore. Due to its potential implications on successful communication in international settings, Singlish has often been deemed controversial, leading to various initiatives to restrict its usage. One such example is the Speak Good English Movement (SGEM), a nation-wide campaign initiated in 2000 by the Singaporean government to promote the use of Standard English among Singaporeans. While some groups have reacted to the campaign positively, critics have long argued that it advocates an elitist form of language that has led to the devaluation of Singlish. Despite these criticisms, the SGEM was recently relaunch in 2019, after close to a decade of inactivity. This paper aims to investigate the campaign’s effect on the Singaporean creole language as it is used in cyberspace. The study focuses on the usage of Singlish sentence-final discourse particles, a linguistic feature often described as the most salient feature of Singlish. Reddit comments from the r/Singapore subreddit were collected from 2018 to 2022 using the Python Reddit API Wrapper. Next, changes in the usage of such discourse particles were investigated using statistical and qualitative corpus methods. Results reveal that the use of Singlish in online discourse varies considerably depending on the individual, but it has remained relatively stable over the period of study despite the relaunch of the SGEM campaign. The study therefore argues that Singlish usage in online spaces reflects a divergent relationship between the Singaporean government’s language policies and the language practices of Singaporeans. We anticipate that these findings can contribute to the current literature on Singlish usage and provide valuable insights for language policy makers and educators. The study also demonstrates the potential of corpus linguistic analysis in understanding the use of English in transnational contexts, specifically in the online space.

     View Summary

Prototypicality is a complex, multifaceted concept relating to the centrality and typicality of examples in a category. While prominent in cognitive psychology and linguistics, it is often overlooked in corpus studies. Corpora are ideally built to be representative of a target domain or language variety. To achieve this goal, corpus builders need to identify an accurate sampling frame and collect relevant texts that capture the diversity of language in and across the sampling categories. In practice, however, corpora are built within the limitations of text availability, time, and human resources leading to questions about the suitability/prototypicality of individual texts in a corpus and their effect on the representativeness of the corpus as whole. Prototypicality also comes into play at the analysis stage. Most corpus analysis approaches use the corpus as a whole as the unit of analysis, including concordance and keyword analysis. To validate findings, a necessary but often omitted step is the close reading of individual texts. Here, a significant challenge is identifying which texts to read. A researcher may decide to randomly choose texts, but it is an open question if such texts are representative/prototypical of the corpus. Prototypicality also comes into play when corpora are used for pedagogic purposes, such as Data-Driven Learning (DDL). In these situations, there is often an implicit conflation of two facets of prototypicality, namely frequency of use and closeness to an ideal, particularly in the case of expert writing. In this paper, we first outline the multifaceted character of corpus text prototypicality. Next, we describe experiments that attempt to rank the prototypicality of individual corpus texts at different linguistic levels as a guide to choosing texts for close reading or excluding texts from a corpus at the data collection stage. Results using a modified version of the ProtAnt tool (Anthony and Baker, 2015) show prototypicality rankings can be dramatically affected by the linguistic level of analysis applied. Standard keywords effectively rank the prototypicality of texts in terms of topic, but the results can be enhanced using key semantic tags. On the other hand, key part-of-speech (POS) tags allow for a more nuanced view of text prototypicality centered on stylistics. The results also reveal the limitations of current corpus software tools and offer suggestions for how new tools might be developed to increase our understanding of prototypicality at the textual level.

In order to implement and promote successful data-driven learning (DDL) in multilingual foreign language classrooms, we have conducted a series of studies and developed several tools and materials for DDL. Through these studies, we have been able to identify specific L2 English grammar areas with which Japanese university students have the most difficulty and have created an original corpus to use as a remedial learning tool in L2 classrooms to target those areas. The tool, called the Sentence Corpus of Remedial English (SCoRE) (http://www.score-corpus.org/), is free, web-based, multi-lingual, and open-platform, and contains additional corpus tools and DDL materials. A series of studies have been undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of these various tools; findings show gains in grammar proficiency as well as favorable feedback from users. We hope they may have a broader use for EFL students of other languages

The aim of this project was to redesign and add new functionality to the AntConc corpus toolkit so that it could respond to the increasing demands of corpus linguists for sophisticated tools that can handle very large, fully-annotated corpora in an easy and intuitive way. To this aim, all three core goals of the project were completed: 1) AntConc has been completely re-written in the Python programming language making it significantly easier to add new functionality and a much improved user experience; 2) AntConc has been redesigned with a novel backend database to allow it to process massive annotated corpora of over 1 billion words on a standard laptop computer; 3) New modules have been created to allow users to easily process texts at the sentence and/or discourse level

In order to implement and promote successful DDL in multilingual foreign language classrooms, we have developed and released two new, simple to use, freeware parallel corpus tools: an online concordancer, WebParaNews, and a standalone multilingual concordancer, AntPConc. The effectiveness of DDL teaching materials for English and Japanese language education using these tools and Japanese-English parallel corpora was measured by pre- and post-tests. Results showed significant gains and positive student feedback, indicating this approach was useful for improving grammar and vocabulary

  • 発見学習のための総合テキスト分析ソフトウエアシステムの開発

     View Summary

2005年度中、統合テキスト分析ソフトウェア「AntConc」のユーザー数は益々拡大し、WindowsやLinuxバージョンが8000回以上ダウンロードされました。また、全世界の教育施設の研究室、コンピュータ教室などにもインストールされ、University of California Santa Barbara (US)、University of Alberta (US)、などで「AntConc」が高く評価されています。

  • Academic and Technical Writing Support Tool Framework for Data-Driven Vocabulary、 Grammar、 and Discourse-Level Instruction

    2021

     View Summary

This research projected proceeded largely as planned withthe results of the work culminating in the release of a major update to AntConc(version 4.0) in December of 2021 that included numerous new features tosupport data-driven learning (DDL) writing support to second and foreignlanguage learners in discipline-specific academic and workplace settings. The newversion of AntConc facilitates the integrated learning and teaching ofvocabulary, grammar, and effective discourse-level writing, and it can beutilized in the writing of research articles, technical documents, and variousother genre texts. In particular, the new tool introduces a completely innovativeway to view Word-In Context (KWIC) concordance lines, which is a core functionof corpus linguistics research and DDL teaching that has remained largelyunchanged for over 60 years. As planned, the results of the project werepresented in various book chapters, international conference plenary talks, invitedresearch seminars, and national and international conference presentations. These included plenary talks in Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, and online, anda book chapter for the Routledge Handbook of Corpus Linguistics. The projectwas successfully completed in March of 2022.

  • プロトタイプテキスト検出ツール開発とテクニカルライティングへの応用

    2016   Paul Baker

     View Summary

    2013

     View Summary

    2004

     View Summary
