The "Napier's binary chessboard" is a calculating board introduced by John Napier in his book "Rabdologiae" [1]. This Napier's binary chessboard can easily be basic four arithmetic operations of binary numbers. In this paper, we propose teaching materials as one of the applications to introductory education on information mathematics using the "Napier's binary chessboard board", and also show the result of the real introductory education using the teaching materials proposed above.

We study inertial manifolds for a semilinear evolution equation du/dt + Au = F(t,u) in a complex Banach space. It is known that various conditions ensure existence of inertial manifolds for the equation, however, Miklaveie gave a sharp but simple condition so as to show the existence of inertial manifolds. In this paper, we show smoothness of inertial manifolds using the sharp condition with additional assumptions on F, and also apply to a scalar reaction diffusion equation u(t) - u(xx) = f(t, x,u,u(x)) with the Dirichlet boundary conditions.

The structure of renormalized dissipative solutions is useful to deal with relaxation systems than the renormalized entropy scheme. We introduce a new notion of renormalized dissipative solutions for the Cauchy problem of a second order degenerate parabolic balance law u_t + div F(u) =Δb(u) with locally Lipschitz-continuous flux F and L^1 data, and prove the equivalence of such solutions and renormalized entropy solutions in the sense of Bendahmane and Karlsen. The structure of renormalized dissipative solutions is flexible and suitable to deal with relaxation systems than the renormalized entropy scheme. The proof of our main theorem is based on the method of doubling variables established by Kruzkov.

We introduce a new notion of renormalized dissipative solutions for a scalar conservation law u(t) div F(u) = f with locally Lipschitz F and L-1 data, and prove the equivalence of such solutions and renormalized entropy solutions in the sense of Benilan et al. The structure of renormalized dissipative solutions is more useful in dealing with relaxation systems than the renormalized entropy scheme. As an example, we apply our result to contractive relaxation systems in merely an L-1 setting and construct a renormalized dissipative solution via relaxation.

A research on the design of mathematics education at the college level was done from the viewpoint that makes much of the contexts of learning mathematics. The research group was divided into two working groups: one was charged with the mathematic education for a science course and the other was for a non-science course. The former developed sample texts of linear algebra and calculus of one variable function as well as a series of teaching materials of calculus of multi-variable function by taking account of engineering application. The way of active learning and flip teaching was also developed. The latter group studied implications of learning mathematics for students of non-science courses from the viewpoint of mathematical literacy and provided an epistemic framework which shows raison d'etre of mathematical knowledge. Some examples as well as a tentative guideline of designing mathematics education were proposed according to the framework.

We held an international workshop to discuss mathematical education at the university level with consciousness of transition from secondary. Out proposal was education for mathematical literacy was effective, which includes modeling process requiring advanced knowledge. The conclusion was that mathematical literacy should be interpreted as “advanced one” and it may be potential if one notes some remarks. Our research went on this direction. First we made clear what “advance mathematical literacy” means. We conclude it is a competence integration cognitive abilities and non-cognitive abilities such as values and attitudes. To giving educational design, one should be explicitly conscious with context of the class and course, with values of mathematics that would be agreed by students, and attitudes and dispositions that students will acquire. Simultaneously we developed teaching materials to use in calculus, linear algebra, and statistics and others for humanities courses.

The theory of the Cauchy problem for one-dimensinal n×n systems of conservation laws has evolved from a set of works by A. Bressan et al via the front tracking method. The argument developed there is, however, rather complex. In this research we restricted ourself to the case of one-dimensional 2×2 systems of conservation laws and succeeded to make clear the geometrical structure of shock curves for the Riemann problem (with initial data of step functions). Using the structure theory established here we gave a simple argument in the front trucking method and proved the existence of entropy solutions to general Cauchy problems. Besides, we obtained the comparison and existence of entropy solutions to nonlinear anisotropic degenerate parabolic equations with initial-boundary conditions.

This research is mainly concerned with entropy solutions for scalar conservation laws as well as nonlinear degenerate parabolic equations. The main results which we obtained are the followings : 1. We introduce a new notion of renormalized dissipative solutions for scalar conservation laws with locally Lipschitz continuous flux-functions and prove that this solution is equivalent to renormalized entropy solutions which are introduced by Benilan et al. in the study of (unbounded) L1 solutions. We also construct a renormalized dissipative solution for contractive relaxation systems in merely an L1 setting. 2. We study two types unbounded weak solutions of the Cauchy problem for scalar conservation laws, that is a renormalized entropy solution and a kinetic solution. It is proved that if u is a kinetic solution, then it is indeed a renormalized entropy solution. Conversely, we prove that if u is a renormalized entropy solution which satisfies a certain additional condition, then it becomes a kinetic solution. 3. We study the comparison principle for nonlinear degenerate parabolic equations with initial and non-homogeneous boundary conditions. We prove a comparison theorem for any (bounded) entropy sub-and super-solution. The L1 contractivity and therefore uniqueness of (unbounded) entropy solutions has been obtained so far, but a comparison result is new. The method used there is the so called doubling variable technique due to Kruzkov. Our method is based upon the kinetic formulation and the kinetic technique. By developing the kinetic technique for degenerate parabolic equations with boundary conditions, we obtain a comparison property. 4. We extend the above result stated in the item 3 to the case of unbounded entropy solutions. We consider the problem in an L1 framework and prove a comparison theorem and existence theorem for renormalized entropy solutions.

    2023

     View Summary

    2022

     View Summary

    2021

     View Summary

    2020

     View Summary

    2019

     View Summary

    2019

     View Summary

    2018

     View Summary

    2004

     View Summary

    2003

     View Summary
