    Recent historiography emphasizes the interactive process between the development of imperial ruling system and nation-building: an approach critical to traditional view on empires oppressing national societies. Based on this historiographical trend, our project understands empire as a space where various groups of populace characterized by religion, class, gender, region, language and culture etc. are negotiating, competing and conflicting each other and with imperial authority. The major contribution of the project is an concrete analysis of the dynamics of this process to make another political and cultural entities, or specifically national societies in the modern period. Especially the comparative study on this subject in Habsburg empire and the Western provinces of the Russian empire is worth mentioning. The project also analyzed construction of collective memories on empires after their destruction and total catastrophe of the 20th century in the European East.

    The purpose of this research was to renovate conventional arguments about the composite formation of historic European states from the point of dynamic view. This research analyzed variable moments and magnetic features of conglomerate polities in the early modern Europe with focusing on the interaction between principles of polities and practices of governance. This research was promoted with international collaboration of historians between Japan and Europe in order to compile each argument about conglomerate polities of Europe from a more general perspective. As a result, this research aroused comprehensive academic discussion about a new framework of analysis to combine historical perspective of state formation from medieval to modern times with the perspective of constitutional concepts of polities like a monarchy or republic.

    Our research project focused on dynamism of constructing nation and nationalism in regions of former Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth (western provinces of Russian Empire and western Soviet republics, Habsburg Monarchy and the Baltic region. Multidimensional functions and construction of nation is here analyzed in a given political society in each period from the early modern times up to the 20th century.
    Early modern "nation" is constructed in manifold political andculturalcontext, related to various values such as political-dynastic, imperial, humanistic-intellectual, confessional, local, municipal, linguistic,of estates, guilds and other corporations, etc. The understanding of nation is not converged to a single political society. Modern nation claims holistic contextualization of vairous negotiations in a political society. The project reveals this process in European borderlands by empirical case studies and comparative method.

    This study focused on methods and logics of regional integration which we can confirm on the state-formation in the early modern peripheral Europe, and we compared visions of public order or images of universal monarch, processes of negotiation between ruler and communities, various relations between them which were based on such negotiations, among north, south, east and west European cases. From such comparative studies, we derived the methodological concept of " the conglomerate state" as one of general aspects of the early modern state-formation to agglomerate plural regions on diverse relations to monarch depending on various images of universal order.

    　本研究は、18-19世紀の市民革命期に欧米諸国で形成された共和政の特性を、「王のいる共和政」を起点にしつつ、君主政・立憲制・市民権・国民国家・連邦制・独裁などの国制の諸概念とその実態を参照軸に、国際比較の上で再検討した。これによって、必ずしも民主政と等価の関係にない近代共和政がもつ多様性を確認しつつ、「王のいる共和政」から「王のいない共和政」への転換に着目した。　このように、欧米近代に内包される複数の様態に着目し近代の総点検を行うことにより、旧来の主権国家像および国民国家像の相対化、ひいては、近代歴史学の従来の認識とその世界史像に転換を促すことができるような将来の研究基盤を構築することができた。

  • ハンガリー・ジャゴバン主義の「王のいる共和政」理論に対するロベルピエールの思想的影響に関する国際比較研究

    　科研費等の従前の研究において、非フランス世界におけるジャコバン主義の多様性を確認しつつ、「王のいる共和政」と「王のいない共和政」の共存という近代西洋共和主義における新たな側面の通時的・動態的把握の方法とその分析枠を提示することができた（拙稿「ハンガリー初期ジャコバン主義の「王のいる共和政」理論」（森原隆編『ヨーロッパ・共生の政治文化史』成文堂、2013年、84-105頁）。　しかし、そこで対象外となっていたのが、非西欧世界のジャコバン主義とフランス・ジャコバン主義との関係性、特にハンガリー・ジャコバン主義に対するロベスピエールの思想的影響関係の考察であった。ジャコバン・ネットワークの検証は、現地ヨーロッパでも未だ展開をみない新たな研究分野である。　特定課題研究を通じて、まず初期ロベスピエール（1792年8月以前）における「王のいる共和政」論の存在を確認したほか、初期ハンガリー・ジャコバン（1793年8月）におけるロベスピエールの自然権思想の反映を実証することができた。

  • チェコスロヴァキア主義の形成と衰退

    昨年度の課題では19世紀前半におけるチェコスロヴァキア主義の成立過程とそのナーロト概念に関する研究を行った。この成果は「1810～1820年代のチェコスロヴァキア主義におけるナーロト概念の成立」（『史観』第150冊、2004年3月）に論文としてまとめた。今年度は、研究対象時期を1830年代に絞り、チェコスロヴァキア主義の衰退過程を中心に研究した。この結果、1840年代に興隆するスロヴァキア主義に基づくスロヴァキア国民概念は、衰退期のチェコスロヴァキア主義から多くの影響を受けていることが判明した。とりわけ、女性を含む居住民全体を包摂する言語・文化的な民族概念、そうした民族の生存権などが継承されていることが分かった。これについては、現在、学術雑誌への寄稿を視野に論文化の途上にある。

    　本研究は、1810年代から20年代の北部ハンガリー（現スロヴァキア）の福音派のチェコスロヴァキア主義者によって措定された「チェコスロヴァキア種族」(ceskoslovensky kmen)概念を重点的に検証した。この概念は、近代の北部ハンガリーにおいて構築された最後のゲンス概念であると同時に、最後のナティオの編成例であった。当概念は、伝統的なナティオ概念の特権社団性を払拭することをめざしつつ、一方で、公用語であるラテン語に代えて俗語による議論の再構成をも企図した。こうした重層的な意図のなかで、近代「国民」概念の原型となるチェコスロヴァキア主義者の「ナーロト」概念が措定されていくことになる。　本研究の成果は、特権身分層に限定される後期中世以来の伝統的なナティオ概念が、福音派のチェコスロヴァキア主義者によって、いかなる論理をもってその社団性を概念上払拭し、言語集団全体を含み込むようなナーロト概念に転化していったのか、その過程を究明した点である。とりわけ、啓蒙的理性に裏打ちされたナーロトの生存権の定立、祖国概念の再定義、女性のシンボル化によってその論理が構築されていることが解明された。こうした論理によって、言語集団全体を含むナーロト概念、すなわち、伝統的なナティオ概念から除外されていた広範な非特権層、なによりも「女性」を含み込む概念が初めて措定されたのである。下層民や女性を含む構成上平準的なナーロト概念の初の提示は、ナーロトの「解放」や「復興」ではなく、ナーロト概念の「下方拡大」という意味において、近代「国民」概念の形成史における極めて重要な位置を占めるのである。　本研究は、早稲田大学史学会編の『史観』第150冊（2004年3月）に寄稿することをめざして、現在、論文化の過程にある。
