    This study investigates the predictions of second language (L2) acquisition models — SLM, PAM-L2, and L2LP — on how native (L1) Japanese speakers implement the spectral and temporal aspects of L2 American English vowel categories. Data were obtained from 102 L1 Japanese speakers in the J-AESOP corpus, which also includes nativelikeness judgments by trained phoneticians. Spectrally, speakers judged to be less nativelike showed a strong influence of L1-L2 category assimilation, except L2 /æː/ whose dissimilarity from L1 categories likely triggered new category formation, in accordance with SLM and PAM-L2. However, more nativelike speakers showed vowel spectra similar to those of native English speakers for all vowels, which aligns better with L2LP. Temporally, although speakers tended to assimilate the phonetic length of English vowels to Japanese phonemic length distinctions, segment-level L1-L2 category similarity was not a significant predictor of the speakers’ nativelikeness. Instead, implementation of prosodic-level factors such as stress and phrase-final lengthening were better predictors. The results highlight the importance of suprasegmental factors in successful L2 category learning and also reveal a weakness in current models of L2 acquisition, which focus primarily on the segmental level. The use of speech corpora for L2 research is discussed.

    To clarify the acoustic variables for predicting and classifying Japanese singleton and geminate consonants, raw and logarithmic durations of the consonants and their related segments were examined using 12 minimal pair words that were pronounced in a carrier sentence at various speaking rates by 20 native Japanese speakers. Regression and discriminant analyses revealed that the logarithmic durations were better at predicting and classifying Japanese singleton and geminate consonants than the raw durations used in many previous studies. Specifically, the best acoustic variables were the logarithmic duration of the consonant's closure or frication and the logarithmic average duration of the mora in the preceding carrier phrase. These results suggest that logarithmic durations are relational invariant acoustic variables that can cope with the durational variations of singleton and geminate consonants in a wide range of speaking rates.

    Automatic recognition of vowel length in Japanese has several applications in speech processing such as for computer assisted language learning (CALL) systems. Standard automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems make use of hidden Markov models (HMMs) to carry out the recognition. However, HMMs are not particularly well-suited for this problem since classification of vowel length is dependent on prosodic information, and since it is a relative feature affected by changes in the durations of surrounding sounds which vary in part due to changes in speaking rates. That being said, it is not obvious how to design an algorithm to account for these contextual dependencies, since there is still not enough known about how humans perceive the contrast. Therefore, in this paper, we conduct perceptual experiments to further understand the mechanism of human vowel length recognition. In our research, we found that the perceptual boundary is largely affected by the vowels two prior, one prior, and following the vowel for which the length is being recognized. Based on these results and the works of others, we propose an algorithm which does post-processing on alignments output by HMMs to automatically recognize vowel length. The method is primarily composed of two levels of processing dealing first with local dependencies and then long-term dependencies. We test several variations of this algorithm. The method we develop is shown to have superior recognition capabilities and be robust against speaking rate differences producing significant improvements. We test this method on three different databases: a speaking rate database, a native database, and a non-native database. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    This paper describes the Asian English Speech cOrpus Project (AESOP), its aims, data collection platform, and auto-annotation method. It also describes the phonemic variation in Japanese speakers' reading of The North Wind and the Sun of the Corpus in relation to the English fluency levels of the Japanese speakers. The results showed that the main segmental difference in pronunciation between Japanese speakers and model native English speakers was vowels. Japanese speakers produced more variants of vowel phonemes; vowel reduction in unstressed syllables did not occur in most speakers' utterances. There was also an influence of Japanese syllable structure in Japanese speakers' English utterances; there were many instances of vowel epenthesis to break up consonant clusters, but there were very few examples of vowel deletion and consonant insertion.

    This study investigated the production of English unstressed vowels by Japanese speakers based on the J-AESOP corpus. Four acoustic features associated with unstressed vowels in English were examined: duration, intensity, fundamental frequency and vowel quality. Comparative analysis with native English speakers' production revealed that the Japanese speakers achieved good control of all the acoustic features except vowel quality, supporting the results of previous studies. Their attainment of nearnative control of duration, intensity and fundamental frequency can be attributed to positive L1 transfer from Japanese. As for vowel quality, the present study showed that the quality of the Japanese speakers' unstressed vowels was more peripheral than that of the native English speakers' because of the difficulty of L2 phoneme acquisition and the influence of orthography.

    A Japanese read-word database was developed for 343 Japanese words spoken by 129 non-native speakers of Japanese (Korean, Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, French, and English speakers) and 18 native speakers of Japanese. The Japanese words had a contrast of segments such as single/geminate stops, normal/lengthened vowels, existence/inexistence of moraic nasal, contracted sound/vowel lit, and voiced/voiceless consonants that non-native speakers of Japanese frequently mispronounce. The speech files of the Japanese words and phoneme labels for a part of the speech files were registered in the database. The database will contribute to scientific research on characteristics of Japanese speech by non-native speakers. It will also contribute to develop a computer aided learning system of Japanese speech for non-native speakers.

    Fifty Japanese speakers' read speech data of "the North Wind and the Sun" from the Japanese AESOP corpus was analyzed by automatic alignment using the HTK tool with a modified TIMIT dictionary. The results showed typical phonetic and phonological problems of English pronunciation by Japanese speakers which have been often discussed in EFL. The Japanese subjects' English fluency was evaluated by 8 English teachers, 3 native English and 5 Japanese speaking teachers. Typical EFL pronunciation problems were found more among lower level speakers and become less problematic for fluent speakers. However, some problems were found persistently, even among fluent speakers. The results also suggest that the automatic alignment we have adopted for our corpus analysis provide acceptable data, and that it should be possible to adopt it to analyze L2 English with other L1 Asian languages.

    This research is part of the ongoing multinational collaboration "Asian English Speech cOrpus Project" (AESOP), whose aim is to build up an Asian English speech corpus representing the varieties of English spoken in Asia. AESOP is an international consortium of linguists, speech scientists, psychologists and educators from Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Thailand, Indonesia and Mongolia. Its primary aim is to collect and compare Asian English speech corpora from the countries listed above in order to derive a set of core properties common to all varieties of Asian English, as well as to discover features that are particular to individual varieties. Each research team will use a common recording setup and share an experimental task set, and will develop a common, open-ended annotation system. Moreover, AESOP-collected corpora will be an open resource, available to the research community at large. The initial stage of the phonetics aspect of this project will be devoted to designing spoken-language tasks which will elicit production of a large range of English segmental and suprasegmental characteristics. These data will be used to generate a catalogue of acoustic characteristics particular to individual varieties of Asian English, which will then be compared with the data collected by other AESOP members in order to determine areas of overlap between L1 and L2 English as well as differences among varieties of Asian English.

    This position paper highlights the importance of suprasegmental training in secondary language (L2) acquisition. Suprasegmental features are manifested in terms of acoustic cues and convey important information about linguistic and information structures. Hence, L2 learners must harness appropriate suprasegmental productions for effective communication. However, this learning process is influenced by well-established perceptions of sounds and articulatory motions in the primary language (L1). We propose to design and collect a corpus to support systematic analysis of L2 suprasegmental features. We lay out a set of carefully selected textual environments that illustrate how suprasegmental features convey information including part-of-speech, syntax, focus, speech acts and semantics. We intend to use these textual environments for collecting speech data in a variety of Asian Englishes from non-native English speakers. Analyses of such corpora should lead to research findings that have important implications for language education, as well as speech technology development for computer-aided language learning (CALL) applications.

  • ポップアウト・ボイスの生成・知覚基盤の解明に基づく高性能拡声音技術の開発

    ①ポップアウトボイスの知覚側面においては，まず知覚実験用の音声刺激として,各種の音声データベースから799名が発声した文や単語を抽出した。一方，男女各5名の音声をコンピュータ上で重畳することにより複数人が同時に発声した騒がしい状況を模擬する「バブルノイズ」を作成した。これを背景雑音として流しながら，データベースから抽出した文や単語の音声刺激を実験参加者にヘッドホンで呈示し，背景雑音からその音声がポップアウトする程度を5段階で評定させる知覚実験を実施した。その評定データを各音声において平均し，ポップアウト度の評定値を得た。評定値が1～5までの広い範囲に分布し，特に評定値が4以上となる音声も存在したことから，ポップアウトをする音声の存在が確認できた。
    ②ポップアウトボイスの音響特徴側面においては，ポップアウトボイスの音響特徴を探るために，大きさに対応する強度，高さに対応する基本周波数，音色に対応する各周波数帯のエネルギー，音色の時間的変化に対応するデルタケプストラムのノルム等を計算し，上記の知覚実験で求めたポップアウトの評定値との相関を解析した。その結果，強度および1kHz以上の周波数帯のエネルギーと評定値との相関係数は中程度以上の0.5から0.7でありポップアウトと関係することが分かった。一方，基本周波数およびデルタケプストラムのノルムと評定値との相関係数は中程度以下の0.3～0.5でありポップアウトとあまり関係しないことが分かった。
    ③ポップアウトボイスの生成側面においては，口の形状や動きとポップアウトボイスとの関係を探るための音声生理学的データとして，磁気共鳴機能画像法(f-MRI)により口の動きの撮像とその音声の録音を行った。またプロのナレーターが発声した通常の声(地声)とポップアウトボイスを録音し，ポップアウトボイスの個人内変動に関する基礎データを得た。

    2021年度は新しい実験を行うことが難しかったため、これまで収集したデータの整理と、英語とフランス語の多様性について、文献調査を交えた研究を行った。今回言語の多様性を探った理由としては、単一の発音モデルを使った第二言語音声学習、またその概念に基づいた言語評定が難しくなっている現状がある。特に、日本語話者が不得意とする子音/l/, /r/, 有声・無声の"th"の発音、/v/の発音などや、多くの母音の発音は地域による差が大きい。特に英語の母音は、地域方言による音素体系や実際の調音による違いの差が大きいことが知られている。しかし、機械を使った自動評定を行うには、モデルとなる発音の音響特性をシステムに組み込む必要がある。しかし、実際に起きるすべての発音の情報を組み込むことは現実的でない。従って、どの程度の調音の逸脱度が音素認識に影響するのか、英語とフランス語で基本となる分節音を抽出し、調音の逸脱度と正しい音素認識の境界を見極める実験を行う準備をしている。
    また、昨年度行った、日本語訛の英語発話の人による評定と機械による評定では、評定者の母語の違いによる評定に差があることが分かったが、母語の違いによる評定値に差がでなかった音声特性についても検証を行った。英語の子音の評定値のうち、母語による評定差が少なかったものとしては、無声破裂音の気息がある。破裂音の気息は、発話理解度の面では、あまり重要ではないが、母語話者度/外国語訛度の観点からは、非常に重要な英語特性である。母語の違いにかかわらず、評定者の気息の判定が一致した理由としては、第二言語としての英語音声教育において、破裂音の気息が重要な項目となっているためではないかと推測される。教える側の思い込み、刷り込みも外国語の音声評価において、重要な要素となっていると思われる。

    一年目は期間が短かく、またコロナの状況が非常に良くないために、実験を行うことがとても難しかったため、結果はまだ得られていない。2021年4月以降に実験を行えるよう、限られた時間と環境の中、文献を使った研究を主に行い、日本語訛の英語の、特に文節音の特徴の抽出を中心に行った。日本語訛の特徴が顕著に表れる文節音を特定したが、その中で特に、(1)英語母語話者にとって、知覚上誤解を与える文節音、(2)今後実験を計画している(a)スペイン語、(b)チェコ語話者にとって、知覚上問題となると想定される文節音、(3)また第一言語を問わず一般的にどの言語話者にも問題となる確率の高い文節音と韻律上の問題点を抽出した。
    (1)-(3)の結果を元に、これらの文節音を含む英語の単語を選定し、それらの文節音に対応する日本語の単語の選定を行った。日本語話者の英語の発音で、一般的に近く認識上問題が多い文節音は、/r, l, z, dz, f, h, v, sh, th (有声・無声), p, t, k, n/（JSPSのシステムで音声記号が認識されないため、一般的なアルファベットの綴りで記載）であることが、様々な文献で一致しているが、実際の日本語訛の発話で言語を問わず一番コミュニケーション上一番問題となるのは母音の調音、特に母音の弱化とtense-laxの母音の区別、子音間への母音の挿入であることがわかった。
    これらを元に、2021年度に日英バイリンガル話者を使った日本語と英語の発話の録音を行えるように、準備を進めている。
    また、オンラインでデータ収集が行えるよう、スマートフォン用の実験アプリを作成し、現在アプリのテスト中である。

    日本語話者の英語の発音を音声コミュニケーションの観点から考察し、日本語訛の英語の特徴と、英語母語話者と非母語話者が日本語訛の英語を理解できるか、どう評価するかを検証した。また、同一話者の音声を基に日英バイリンガル音声を合成し、外国語訛の度合いを変化させた日本語訛の英語と英語訛の日本語音声を使い、分節音の正確さと外国語訛度判定の知覚実験を行った。日本語訛の英語の判定においても、バイリンガル合成音を使った知覚実験においても、従来から指摘されている特定の分節音の日本語訛度が高くなると、外国語訛の発音と判定された。結果を受けて、特定の分節音の習得に特化した発音教育法の開発が求められる。本研究は、これから益々一般的となる非母語話者間の音声コミュニケーションにおいて、すでに数多くの研究が行われている学習者としての発話理解・意思の疎通だけではなく、“情報を伝達する側”という視点で、英語母語話者・非母語話者を問わず誰にでも通じる日本語訛の英語とは何か、どのような発音であれば、母語を問わず誰にとっても理解されるのかを客観的に示し、英語音声習得教育の指針を示すことを目指した研究である。外国語訛があっても必ずしも理解度が低くなるわけではなく、母語話者のように話せるようになる教育よりも、必要な情報を伝えられる音声コミュニケーションを想定した外国語音声教育が大切なことが分かった

    日本語音声教育・音声工学・音声医学等の関連領域へ寄与するために音声の知覚と生成の特性の解明を目標とし，促音と非促音の区別，および破擦音・摩擦音の区別に関し，日本語母語話者と非日本語母語話者(中国語，韓国語，タイ語，ベトナム語，フランス語，英語)を対象として，知覚と生成の両側面から科学的研究を進めた。その結果，音韻の知覚範疇境界および生成範疇境界に対し母語・発声速度・無声化母音等が影響を及ぼすこと，また音声の音響特徴を表す変数の組み合わせにより，音韻の知覚範疇境界および生成範疇境界を数式で表現可能であることが明らかになり，さらに知覚範疇境界と生成範疇境界との対応関係も明らかになった

    本研究費を受け、この２年間でCALL(Computer Assisted Language Learning)技術を高めるために、(1) 日本語の発話速度のデータベースの作成と(2) 外国語発音向上のためのシステム開発の研究を行った。特に発音向上のためのシステム開発の研究は、発音向上という目的だけでなく、音声学や音声工学などの基礎科学、また外国語音声教育などへの応用研究に貢献できるものである。
    まず、(1)の日本語の発話速度のデータベース（Jasper）は、日本語母語話者が無意味語をゆっくり、普通、速いの三つの異なる速度で発話したものを収録したものである。このデータベースは日本語の母音の長短、促音、撥音などの特殊拍の長さが、発話速度によりどう変化しているかの研究には不可欠なもので、特殊拍と発話リズムの研究に役立つように構築してある。また既存のデータベースと合わせて、構築したJasperを使い、日本語話者の知覚実験を行い、母音長の知覚には、母音そのものの長さよりも２モーラ前から１モーラ後ろに出現する母音長が大きく影響を与えていることを示した。この結果を元に、日本語話者が異なる発話速度において、どのように母音長を知覚するかを解析した。
    (2)の外国語学習のためのシステム開発に向けての研究は、まずニューラル・ネットワークを用い、言語学習者の発話の音声波形を元に、異なる話者個人個人の発話特徴ではなく、様々な話者共通の音声特徴 (features) を抽出する方法を提唱した。発話音声は、言語音声情報だけでなく、話者の身長・体重・性別・年齢などの言語外的要因の影響も受けるため、話者共通の音声特徴の抽出は簡単ではないが、この話者共通の音声特徴を使い、学習言語にとらわれない、多言語に対応した学習者の発音判定のためのアルゴリズムを考案した。

    第二言語音声の生成・知覚現象を音声科学として理解し、教育に資するため、第二言語音声生成の時間制御・知覚特性分析を行った。アジア人学習者英語音声コーパスを作成して非母語学習者の音声時間制御傾向を分析し、強勢を有する音節間の時間間隔ＩＳＩに見られる英語母語話者との相違を定量的に明らかにした。また、日本語学習者の特殊拍音声を収録し、特殊拍時間知覚分析と難易度推定を試みた。この過程で、言語共通に見られる時間知覚への声の大きさの関与、日本語拍タイミングと中国語音節タイミングが与える時間制御の相違を定量的に明確にした。さらに、その違いを反映した音声教育を試み、学習者の特殊拍生成の能力向上を確認できた

    第二言語としてのフランス語の習得度の指針となる鼻母音(/a~/-/o~/-/e~/)と/r/-/l/、/b/-/v/、/y/-/u/の習得について、知覚と産出の両面に関して、学習者の経年習得過程を調査した。産出では、特定の母音が他の母音に比べて有意に正確に産出されるということはなく、知覚においては、早い時期から２つの鼻母音の対立が弁別されることが分かった。これは第二言語習得の過程において「知覚は産出に先行する」という理論の検証となった

    中国語、ベトナム語、韓国語、フランス語話者の日本語発話リズムを、特殊拍を含む単語を用い、韻律変数の比較を中心に分析し検証した。どの言語も、日本語レベルが中以上の学習者の発話においては、個々の韻律変数単独では、日本語母語話者とのリズムの差はでなかった。しかし高い韻律制御にかかわらず、非母語話者の発話と判定された。外国語訛の判定には、発話リズムに加え、音素の調音など、複数の要素がかかわっていると推測される

    第二言語としての日英語間相互の韻律習得の問題を検証した。日本語話者の英語発話では、強勢の有無と母音の質の習得が上級者でも不完全である例が多かった。英語話者の日本語発話では、語アクセントとピッチおよびモーラ長に相関関係がみられる話者が多く、またフレーズ発話時にも語アクセントを用いるため、フレーズ全体でダウンステップ現象が起き、語の平板化現象が顕著な日本語話者のフレーズイントネーションとの違いが際立った

    仏語の母音長と日本語話者の知覚の関係を検証するために、借用語における音韻環境と母音長の関係を見直した。音韻上のどの環境で、短母音/i/,/o/等と長母音/i:/,/o:/等と1モーラ分の差がでるのか。音素レベルでは母音に長短の違いがなく、物理的にも通常有意な長さの違いが見られない仏語の母音を、日本語話者は音韻環境等によって異なった長さの母音と認識する。2モーラとして認識される代表的な環境としては、(1)母音の綴り:accent-circumflex(^)が母音につく場合(e^^,1^^,o^^等)やeauなど2-3文字で綴られる場合。(2)重音節化:元の言語の閉音節が日本語に借用されたとき/CVC/→/CV.CV/となるが、初めの音節は重音節となる傾向がある。重音節化には通常(a)最終音節子音の促音化(pit→/pit.to/)と(b)母音の長音化(Pete→/pii.to/)のいずれかが起きる。(3)(2)で閉音節の最後の子音が無声阻害音または鼻音以外のとき、母音は長音化する。(4)再音節化:日本語で許容されない子音の連続などの音節構造のとき、母音を挿入しCVという軽音節を作り、モーラ数を増やす。これらの音韻環境のうち、(4)は上級話者にはほとんど見られないことが既に判明しているため、今回は(1)〜(3)の環境を中心に、音韻環境で母音長が長くなる環境下の知覚と発話の関連を調べた。その結果、日本語話者は(1)と(3)の環境において、実際は他の環境と継続時間が同じ母音を長母音として知覚し、発話においても2モーラ分の長さの長母音として産出する傾向があった。これは、仏語上級話者においても顕著に見られ、音韻環境と音声知覚、およびその産出への影響が明らかとなった

  • 英語学習による日本語の調音への影響と音声認識の変化

    &nbsp; 今年度は、発話リズムの習得が外国語の音声認識に与える影響を調査するために、日本語母語話者の英語発話を、発話リズムの指標であるglobal metricsとpairwise metricsを用いて、発話リズムの分析を行った。　英語習熟度の低い話者は、言いよどみなどが多く発話速度が遅いことから、分節音の平均継続時間を使って話速の正規化を行った結果、global metricsの指標が英語習熟度と高い相関を示すことが明らかとなった。これらの結果をもとに、英語習熟度と英語圏滞在歴を変数とし、日本語音声発話リズムの変化と日本語の分節音の調音の変化に相関がみられるかどうか、検証していく予定である。

  • 非母語話者間の効果的音声コミュニケーションのための英語音声自動評価システムの開発

    日本語訛の英語の流暢さの自動評価システムを構築するために、まず人による評価を行い、それを基に自動評価システムを構築した。この評価システムを使って、別の日本語訛の英語音声の自動評価を行い、人間による評価と機械による評価を比較検証した。日本語話者と英語話者の英語発話を、英語話者が”流暢さ”の評定をし、その評定結果を元に流暢さの自動判定システムを構築した。この自動判定システムによる別の日本語訛の英語の評定値を、異なる16名の評定値との比較したところ、まあまあ高い相関を得られた(r=0.65)。これらの結果から、今回構築した自動判定システムの日本語訛の英語の流暢さの評価は、ある程度信頼度が高いといえる。

  • 第二言語から第三言語への音声習得のメカニズムの研究

    As a first step to investigating third language acquisition, I investigated acquisition of different accents of a second language (L2). I investigated whether subjects could acquire L2 phonemes in two different L2 accents, even though they had only been trained how to discriminate L2 phonemes in one of the L2 accents. Such tests help to understand if learners can extend their knowledge of L2 phonemes to third+ languages.&nbsp;The test focused on English liquid consonant acquisition by native Japanese speakers. Liquid consonants in English have different varieties depending on accent: varying from (post) alveolar approximant or retroflex (e.g. American English) ~ tap or flap (e.g. Scottish English). We first taught American English varieties of liquid consonants /l/ and /r/ to the native Japanese speakers, focusing on the articulation of /r/ which is an approximant produced with lip rounding. After five weeks training, they became able to discriminate American English /l/ and /r/. However, when we then tested their liquid discrimination ability of Scottish accent (Scottish tap is different from American English /r/), we found that their discrimination of Scottish English /l/ and /r/ was not very good. Therefore, training with American accent did not improve their discrimination ability of a different (Scottish tap) accent.&nbsp;

  • 第二言語で習得された新しい範疇の音の第三言語音声習得における役割

    　本研究では、”第二言語(L2)の音は第一言語(L1)の音素の調音から離れているほうが違いが際立ち、知覚されやすく、習得されやすい”というL2音声習得モデル理論を元に、アメリカ英語（L2）の/r/の習得が、/r/の調音が異なるスコットランド英語(第三言語)の/r/と/l/の知覚に影響を及ぼすかを検証した。日本語にはない円唇と舌の引き込みを伴うアメリカ英語の/r/（歯茎接近音）の訓練を受けた被験者グループと、訓練を受けないグループの/r/と/l/の知覚を比較したところ、訓練を受けたグループは、アメリカ英語の/r/の知覚能力が高くなったが、スコットランド英語のたたき音の/r/の知覚能力には影響せず、むしろ/l/に対する識別力が高くなった。　

  • バイリンガル音声合成を用いた英語の日本語訛の強度と発話理解度の判定

    日本語話者にとって英語の/l/と/r/がどのように聞こえているかを、/l/と/r/の割合を/r/100%から/l/100%まで変化させた英語音声と英語訛のある日本語音声を用い、日本語話者が英語らしいと感じる発音はどのようなものかを検証した。その結果、/l/の代わりに典型的な英語の/r/の音である後部歯茎接近音または反り舌音を多用した発話(80％以上)が、英語母語話者らしい英語の発音と判定された。一方、英語訛のある日本語の判定では、ラ行子音に/r/の音を多用した発話(60％以上)が英語話者の話す日本語と判定された。/l/の割合が80％の日本語を英語話者の日本語と判定した被験者はいなかった。

  • 文字表記の視覚効果と第二言語の音素認識の関係の検証と音声教育への応用

    &nbsp;本研究は、日本語話者が苦手とする外国語音素の文字表記をかき分けることにより、それが第二言語の音素の認識に影響を与えるかどうかを、中学生を対象とし、調査した。英語の発音で日本語話者が最も苦手とする/l/と/r/、/b/と/v/の習得を、日本語の文字表記との関連から検証し、学習者に英語の発音を「バビブベボ」と「ヴァヴィヴヴェヴォ」またラ行は片仮名とアルファベットのLとRを組み合わせて書き分けさせることで、綴りの習得に差が出るか調査を行った。半年間という限られた期間の調査であったので、個人差も大きくはっきりと差が出たわけではないが、全体的な傾向として、書き分けをしたグループの学習者はコントロールグループと比較して、/l/-/r/、/b/-/v/とも、文字の認識に若干であるが有意な差が見られた。今後学校教育の限られた学習時間で、発音記号を十分教えられなくても、片仮名を用いて十分効果的な発音教育が行えるようになる可能性を示唆している。

  • 英語における日本語アクセントの解析：音素の逸脱度と発話理解度の検証

    　英語音声コーパスを用い、日本人英語話者94人分のデータをアメリカ標準英語話者の発話と比較した。日本語話者の英語の発話は、母音の問題のほうが、子音の問題よりも圧倒的に多く（4,478/6,620例）、全英語レベルにおいて、ストレスの有無による母音のF0と音圧の制御は見られたが、母音長の制御は上級レベル話者の発話にのみ見られた。子音に関しては、/l/-/r/, /b/-/v/, /s/-/θ/, /z/-/dz/等の間違いが数多く見られたが(2,142/6,620例)、音素の代用に明らかな方向性が見られた。例えば、日本語話者の英語の発話には、/l/の代わりに/r/の代用は多く起きるが、/r/の代わりに/l/を代用することは非常に少ない。これは、日本語話者が英語の/r/を新しい音として認識しているからだと思われる。

    　本研究は、発話リズムの基本単位が日本語と異なるフランス語を用いて、日本語話者のフランス語発話を分析することにより、日本語話者の発話リズムの基本単位の考察を行ったものである。フランス語はシラブルを基本とした発話リズムを持つ言語であるが、日本語話者のフランス語フレーズの時間制御を分析することで、日本語話者の発話リズムはモーラとシラブルのどちらを基本単位としているかを検証した。　本研究の実験では、日本語話者、フランス語話者、各５名ずつを被験者とし、シラブル数が同じであるが、理論上日本語話者が母音の長さが異なる（短母音＝1モーラ、長母音＝2モーラ）と捉える音韻環境にあるフランス語の数対のフレーズ（garcons　と　gares sont，l’otarie と　l’eau tarit，touret　と tour est等）を用い、日本語話者のフランス語発話に母音長の差が見られるかを測定し、フランス語話者の発話と比較した。　実験の結果、フランス語話者の発話では、シラブル数によるフレーズ長に有意な差がみられたが、モーラ数による影響は見られなかったばかりか、モーラ数が少ないフレーズのほうが長い対も少なくなかった。一方、日本語話者のフランス語発話には、シラブル数の影響は見られなかったが、モーラ数とフレーズ長の関係には有意な差が確認された。つまり、日本語の発話と同様、モーラ数に正比例して、フレーズ長が一定の割合で長くなった。　これらの結果から、(１)日本語話者は外国語（ここではフランス語）の音を聞いたとき、日本語のリズムの単位（モーラ）を用い、音の連鎖を分析する。(２)日本語話者は、音の認識の基本単位モーラを発話の基本単位とする。(３)日本語話者のフランス語の音声認識において、音韻理論上の分析法すべてが同様に用いられているわけではなく、音素配列に基づいた子音間への母音の挿入は、語末が閉音節など特定の音声環境によっては起こるとは限らない。従って、モーラ数の増加によるフレーズ長増加も起こらない。理由としては、インプットの段階で、モーラを単独で形成できない浮遊子音は、フレーズ長の制御に影響を与えないらしいということが考えられるということが分かった。

  • 第二言語のアクセント習得における第一言語の干渉の音響音声学的研究

    　本研究は第一言語が第二言語の韻律、特に発話リズムとアクセントの習得にどのような影響を与えるかを実験・調査研究したものである。2001年4月に研究計画書を作成した時点では、発話を中心に事象を検証していく予定であったが、その後発表された新しい文献の情報から、音声の知覚・認識の更なる検証が必要ということが判明したため、発話とあわせて、日本語話者の外国語音の連鎖の解読の仕組みも調査した。　まず、日本語話者の韻律に関しては、モーラを基準とする時間制御の要素が圧倒的に強く現れた。日本語話者の発話実験では、フレーズのシラブル数と使われている音が同じでありながら、日本語話者が分析した場合モーラ数が異なるフランス語のフレーズの総継続時間を計った結果、日本語話者の発話ではシラブル数に関係なくモーラ数が多いフレーズ長が明らかに長くなる傾向があった。つまり日本語話者は、外国語の音の連鎖をモーラを単位として解析し、モーラ数に準じて発話長も変化することがあらためて立証された。基本周波数や母音の強度等、その他の要素には有意な差が見られなかった。　また、英語話者のうち上級日本語発話においては、(1)モーラを単位とする時間制御ができていた話者と、(2)時間制御がうまくいっていない話者とに大別された。(1)の時間制御ができていた話者は(a) 発話のピッチレンジを英語を話しているときに比べて狭めることにより、時間制御を達成しようとしているといった傾向がみられた。(2)の時間制御がうまくできていない英語話者は(b)ピッチレンジが英語発話時と殆ど変わりがない人が多かった。つまり、英語話者にとってストレスの有無と母音長は密接な関係にあり、ピッチつまり基本周波数の変化が伴った場合、母音の継続時間を制御させるのが難しいため、発話のピッチレンジを押さえることにより、母音長への影響を極力押さえるというストラテジーを無意識に採用しているものと思われる。　残念であったのは、当初言語の初級者と上級者の発話を比較する予定であったが、初級者のデータは読み間違いが多すぎ、またフレーズ中にポーズが挿入されてしまっていたサンプルが多すぎて、データとしては使えないものが多かったため、比較はとりあえずしていない。テストフレーズが初級者には難しかったのかもしれない。今後の課題として検討したいと思う。

  • 英語話者と日本語話者による語のアクセントの実現とストラテジーの音響的考察

    　本研究では日本語を学習中の英語話者4名の日本語の発話を日本語話者5名の日本語と比較し、語アクセント具現化の方法と英語アクセント具現化の日本語への干渉を調査した。実験にはアクセント位置のことなる2モーラ語（籠―加護、型―肩、量―傘、等）を用い、語アクセントの有無による基本周波数の変化、母音の長さ、母音の強度を比較した。日本語話者の結果には有意な個人差は見られず、いずれの被験者も語アクセントは基本的には基本周波数の変化で表し、語アクセントの有無により、母音の長さや強度に有意な差が見られることはなかった。　一方、英語者においては、まず被験者のデータに個人差が大きく、どこまで英語話者の傾向として一般化が可能かがまず問題となろう。また、英語話者は第一モーラにアクセントを置くことは問題がなかったが、語アクセントの位置が実験用のテキストに明確に示されていたにもかかわらず、第二モーラにアクセントを置けないサンプルが少なからず生じた。また特に無アクセント語は、殆どのサンプルで第一モーラにアクセントが置かれていた。語アクセントが正しく置かれていたサンプルを取り出し、アクセントの有無により、同種母音の長さと強度を比較をした。母音の長さではアクセントが置かれた母音は置かれない母音と比べて、明かに継続時間が長くなっていた。その理由としては、英語においてはアクセント核のある母音の継続時間が長くなるため、その母語の干渉により母音が長くなったと考えられる。また英語では、アクセントの置かれない母音には弱化現象が起こり、調音の中舌化に加え継続時間も短縮されるため、日本語においても非アクセント母音の弱化現象という英語からの別種の干渉の両方が原因として考えられる。また、アクセントの置かれた母音の強度に関しても、継続時間と同様、英語話者の日本語ではアクセントの置かれた母音には顕著な強度の増加がみられ、アクセントの置かれていない同種の母音の強度とに有意な差が認められた。　この実験の結果から、英語話者は日本語のアクセントを表すために、日本語話者と同様、基本周波数を用いているが、同時に英語における語アクセント具現化の音響特徴（母音の継続時間と強度）も移行していることがわかった。また、個人差がかなりあるものの、継続時間の制御を比較的うまく行っている被験者には、ピッチ幅を押さえることにより継続時間の制御を行う傾向もみられた。この点に関しては今後の詳しい調査が必要と思われる。
