    The conventional view that women in premodern Japan were uniformly subordinated within patriarchal households does not stand up to close scrutiny of the historical sources. The latter have to be understood very broadly: using poetry, pictorial representations and the histories of important family enterprises alongside such documents as trade directories and temple registers, it is possible to identify women operating at every level of commercial activity. These findings contradict the normative facade of the Confucian and Buddhist teachings of the time. The relations between men and women in the early years of the great merchant houses subvert simplistic categories of public and private, and suggest new ways of examining gender difference in this and subsequent periods.

    ここ数年、私は正親町町子の『松陰日記』の英訳に専念してきた。言うまでもなく、宮川葉子氏の『柳沢家の古典学（上）—「松陰日記」』（新典社・平成19年1月）の町子自筆本による新しい翻刻が拙訳を可能にした。通釈や数千に及ぶ細かい注釈付きの宮川氏の労作は「柳沢家の古典学」はもちろん、いくつもの今まであまり知られていない世界に焦点を当て、目に見えるようにしてきた。徳川五代将軍綱吉の側近柳沢吉保の私生活、裕福な武家とそうではない公家の微妙なやりとり、何人もの公家出身女性の人生、平安時代文学の近世における受容、など、宮川氏の『松陰日記』は読者に多くを語っている。 本発表で特に注目したいのは『松陰日記』の読者である。柳沢吉保の公用日記『楽只堂年録』は明治3年まで柳沢家内部でしか閲覧できなかった。その代わりに『松陰日記』は写本で広く流布したのである。『徳川実紀』が『松陰日記』を採録している記事は二十箇所に上ることが先行研究で示され、京都の文人で『近世畸人伝』の作者として知られている伴蒿蹊や、広島藩儒者の頼春水も『松陰日記』の写本を所有していたことは承知のとおりである。蒿蹊、春水の他に誰が『松陰日記』の写本を所持していたのか、何を『松陰日記』に求めたのか、発表で探ってみたい。 最後に、英語圏読者のために英訳を作成する過程で『松陰日記』の本文に何が見えてきたのかについても触れてみたいと思う。

    Ōgimachi Machiko (1679-1724) was a concubine of Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu (1658-1714), a samurai of relatively humble origins who rose to become Chief Adjutant to the fifth Tokugawa Shogun Tsunayoshi (1646-1709; r. 1680-1709). In the Shelter of the Pine (ca. 1710-1712) is her memoir of Yoshiyasu, the man she lived with for twenty some years, from late 1693, when she was fourteen, until his death in the Eleventh Month of 1714, when she was thirty-five. It is decidedly not a "warts and all" portrait of Yoshiyasu. Machiko's brief was to depict Yoshiyasu's life as exemplary; and accordingly, the tale she tells is of devotion to duty and services respectfully rendered, duly rewarded with promotions and shogunal praise. The details that Machiko is at pains to convey—the dates of Tsunayoshi's visits, the conduct of grand ceremonies, the names and court offices of the men who were in attendance, the Nō plays performed on this or that occasion, the gifts given and received, the births and the deaths—are historically accurate. Much of this information is available elsewhere, however, and is not the principal interest of the work to a twenty-first-century reader. Rather, it is the way these details are narrated, the literary form adopted by the author for her narrative, that constitute the chief interest of the text, and will be the focus of Dr. Rowley's talk to the Society.

  • 『源氏物語』の女性読者の受容－花屋玉栄の場合－

    前近代において、『源氏物語』注釈書にはすさまじい量があるが、女性によって書かれた物は少なく、女性読者のために書かれた物は玉栄の作品以外を見出せない。玉栄の女性読者に対する配慮と思われる特徴には、主にひらがなを利用することや、男性による注釈書と違って、典拠として仏典、漢籍をいっさい挙げていないことがある。１．花屋玉栄（かおくぎょくえい、１５３６－１６０２以降）が書き残した二つの『源氏物語』注釈書の部分英訳を作成した。具体的には、玉栄の注釈書『花屋抄』（文禄３／１５９４年完）と梗概書『玉栄集』（慶長７／１６０２年完）の部分訳を米国コロンビア大学のハルオ・シラネ教授が編集中の『源氏物語』受容史英訳集（英語のタイトルはThe Genji Reader）に提出し、いづれコロンビア大学出版会に出版される予定である。２．玉栄とは誰だったのかをできる限り明確にするために、いくつかの研究機関を訪れ、研究者と面会した。２００４年５月２０日に東京大学史料編さん所蔵の『近衛家文書』を調査し、吉田早苗教授に話をうかがった。さらに２００５年３月６日～１０日の間京都にある陽明文庫に調査へ出かけて行った。陽明文庫長の名和修氏にいくつかの近衛家文書を見せ、難解の箇所まで判読していただき、大変お世話になった。わたくしの仮説、「足利十三代将軍義輝の御台所近衛前久の姉」＝「近衛前久の姉花屋玉栄」を検証するために最も貴重な資料は、慶長年間にできた系譜一枚で、玉栄の弟で、近衛家の当主近衛前久（１５３６－１６１２）あるいは前久の嫡男信尹（１５６５－１６１４）が作成した物と思われる。玉栄や前久の父親近衛稙家の子女が掲載されている系譜で、義輝御台が記載されているが、院号などの記載はなく花屋玉栄と同一人物であるかどうかは不明のままである。他に玉栄と考えられるような人物の記載もなく、同一人物ではないと決定することも難しい。成果とは言い難いが、近い将来これらを日本語の小論にまとめ、多く意見などを求めたい所存である。３．２００５年３月２４～２６日コロンビア大学で催される国際シンポジウム「The Tale of Genji in Japan and the World: Social Imaginary, Media, and Cultural Production」に出席し、淑徳大学教授宮川葉子氏と共同発表を行った。題は「江戸期の公家と武家の文化交流―綱吉の時代を中心に―」で、直接玉栄とは関係がないものの、次の研究課題『源氏物語』の女性読者の受容「正親町町子の場合」につなげていきたいと思う次第である。

  • 1950年代の日本女性の「底辺」－増田小夜の『芸者　苦闘の半生涯』

    増田小夜の自叙伝『芸者　苦闘の半生涯』（平凡社１９５７年初版、１９９５年改訂版）の拙訳、『Autobiography of a Geisha』は２００２年５月にColumbia University Press（米国コロンビア大学出版会）の審査を通り、２００３年３月に出版されました。すでに英連邦におけるペーパーバックの出版もVintage UKで決定されています。審査を通ってから出版までの１０ヶ月間、解説や注の下調べをしているうち、助成費で、増田さんが芸者をしていた諏訪温泉へ二泊三日の調査・研究旅行に出かけました。増田さんの自伝に出てくるいくつかの場所を探し当てて、写真をとり、写真６枚が訳の本文と後書きの間に置くことができました。幸いなことに、上諏訪は第二次世界大戦中空爆をまぬかれ、昔ながらと思われる花街がいまだ姿を完全に消していません。助成費で地図の作成も専門の出版業者小宮山清氏に依頼し、実にきれいなものができました。日本全土の地図の他に、増田さんが生まれ育った、芸者や後に料理屋の女中をしていた信州地方や、戦時中移り住んだ千葉半島の拡大地図も作成し、訳の解説（前書き）と本文の間に置きました。翻訳とは別に、「１９５６年「売春防止法」の一考察ー売春婦たちの反対を中心にー」といった論文ができました。今までの売春防止法研究と違って、当時、実際売春をしていた女性たちの声に耳を傾くことを重視し、新吉原女性保健組合が出版していた新聞『婦人新風』の復刻版を購入し、論文に数箇所を訳し引用しました。最終稿を校正して、年内『U.S.-Japan Women's Journal』（城西大学国際文化教育センターが出版している日米女性ジャーナル）で公表する予定です。２００３年３月
