    This multidisciplinary collection examines the connections between education, migration and translation across school and higher education sectors, and a broad range of socio-geographical contexts. Organised around the themes of knowledge, language, mobility, and practice, it brings together studies from around the world to offer a timely critique of existing practices that privilege some ways of knowing and communicating over others. With attention to issues of internationalisation, forced migration, minorities and indigenous education, this volume asks how the dominance of English in education might be challenged, how educational contexts that privilege bi- and multi-lingualism might be re-imagined, what we might learn from existing educational practices that privilege minority or indigenous languages, and how we might exercise ‘linguistic hospitality’ in a world marked by high levels of forced migration and educational mobility. As such, it will appeal to scholars across the social sciences with interests in education, migration and intercultural communication.

    The Issei, or first-generation Japanese immigrants, were ineligible for citizenship, while the US-born Nisei, or second generation children, were citizens by birth in prewar period. In the early 1900s, many of the Issei were in fact sojourners without firm footholds on either side of the Pacific. However, as they started raising families of their own in the US mainland and Hawaii, the education of Nikkei citizens became a pressing issue. As the number of Nisei children increased, Japanese Language Schools (JLSs) proliferated in Japanese communities in Hawaii, California, and Washington State. While the number of JLSs sharply increased, the Americanization movement in the mid-1910s through the mid-1920s called for restrictive legislative measures against the operation of JLSs. One of the measures had to do with the creation of locally-compiled language textbooks which were to be approved by the state board of education. As a result, several language textbooks were edited and published in Seattle, California, and Hawaii. The pros and cons of the JLSs will be discussed by utilizing newspaper articles found in a search of the Hoji Shinbun Digital Collection of the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. In this presentation, I will first outline the situation in which JLSs were placed in Seattle/Tacoma, California, and Hawaii in the 1920s giving special attention to the Tacoma Japanese Language School as a case study. Second, I will review the textbooks published in Seattle, California, and Hawaii, referring to the process of editing and publishing the California JLS textbooks as well as their contents in relation to Kokutei (Monbusho-approved) textbooks. I will then analyze the contents of the textbooks concerning how the Issei educators attempted to educate Nisei children, given the back drop of the tug-of-war on the education of the Nisei children between “Teikoku Shinmin” (Japanese subjects) and “Nikkei Shimin” (Japanese American citizens). I will also discuss different types of textbooks published in Hawaii and analyze them in the context of disputes concerning restrictive measures against JLSs. Finally, I will summarize the similarities and differences among the three sets of locally produced JLS textbooks and identify what Issei educators were trying to impart to Nisei children, and to what extent the textbooks might have influenced the education of the Nikkei citizens. An examination of the historical experiences of language communities is indispensable for fully understanding the contemporary state of an ethnic community’s heritage language, cultural maintenance and shift. I believe that a close examination of the editorial processes and the content of the textbooks will further help clarify what the Issei educators intended to teach their Nisei children in the context of tense inter-ethnic relations in pre-war America.

    I have conducted research on the education of the "Nikkei citizen" in the prewar period by focusing on textbooks and teaching materials used in Japanese language schools in California, Washington State, and Hawaii. Textbooks compiled in the 1920s in the mainland US, including Seattle, California, and Hawaiian versions and reprints of some of these versions have recently been published in Japan. Foreign Language School Control Laws in these states compelled Nikkei educators to compile locally-edited textbooks. However, the research I have conducted reveals that the extent to which the locally compiled textbooks were used differs from region to region. While, in California, Mombusho or the Ministry of Education compiled textbooks tended to be used widely as opposed to the Californian version, the opposite was true to Hawaii.
    Based on the research results stated above, in a prospective research, I would like to shift my research focus to the during-the-war period regarding what kind of Japanese language and cultural maintenance education was conducted in the ten internment camps, if any, and in other Japanese communities in inland states such as Utah, Colorado, and Idaho as well as in Hawaii.

    The purpose of this study was to analyze the contents of Japanese Readers published in the US mainland and Hawaii in the 1920s and 1930s, and compare the contents of these textbooks and those of the Japanese Ministry of Education in the prewar period. In terms of the content analysis, I chose a California version of Japanese Readers and published research results in a co-authored book.
    We also created a catalogue for Japanese textbooks, teaching materials, and students' group work logs and the like which were found in the Washington State Historical Society and Washington University Library Special Collections. In Hawaii, we digitally photographed some of the Japanese textbooks preserved at the Hamilton Library, University of Hawaii Manoa. We also catalogued Japanese Readers and other Japanese language school related materials at the Hawaii Japanese Center at Hilo, Hawaii.

    The purpose of this research is to develop educational materials on Japanese migrants abroad in order to teach Japanese pupils and the children of migrants alike the historical significance of the migration. As a case study, we focused on Japanese Brazilians and created “Imin Sugoroku” or Japanese traditional board game in which pieces are advanced on a world map by throwing dice. We tried the Sugoroku at a public elementary school in Yokohama and used it at a training session for those Japanese language teachers who came from South America as well.

    The achievement of our group study is the establishment of the following summarized report(issued on Mar 31, 2000) : The Study of Forming elements of the Education for 'Japanese Children Overseas before the World WarII' and Intercultural Education-basing on the Relation between Modern Japan and Hawaii, U.S.A., Brazil, Manchuria, Southeast Asia as well as Taiwan. This report is based on the information obtained from the eleven research meetings, two reviews in Brazil and Hawaii, relevant reference materials and duplications from the libraries of Tern University, Wades University and The International Cooperative Association as well as questionnaire survey and interview with people concerned.
    Our research group invited guests to listen to their reports. The relevant research activities about the date of the meetings, presenters' names, titles of their presentations etc. are all written in the preface of our report.

    本研究は戦時期の北米日系人強制収容所における日系文化の維持・継承について調査することを目的とした。当初はスタンフォード大学フーバー研究所、UCLA図書館スペシャルコレクションにおいて強制収容所関連の資料を調査する予定であったが、コロナウィルス感染のため渡米しての調査は叶わなかった。したがって、国内において、（1）国立国会図書館および和歌山市民図書館移民資料室所蔵の戦時転住局関連資料調査、（2）JICA横浜海外移住資料館所蔵「伊藤一男コレクション」の北米日系人収容所関連資料調査、（3）JARP Oral History 収録の1960年代半ばを中心とした聞き取り調査の中から一世の二世に対する日本語・日本文化継承に関する内容を中心に調査した。

  • Hawaii Japanese Center 所蔵音声資料のデジタル化と聞き取り調査

    本研究は2015年度から継続的に実施してきたHawaii Japanese Center（以下HJC）所蔵文書・音声資料のデジタル化、目録作成の延長線上にある調査研究である。2018年度はハワイ郡助成による改修作業でHJCが一時閉鎖となったため、ハワイ島在住二世、三世への聞き取り調査を行った。幸い、ハワイ島ヒロおよびパホア在住の二世（80才代〜90才代）７名、三世（60才代）10名の合計1７名にインタビューできた。今回の調査は、次の点において意義があった。①比較的良好な健康状態を保ち記憶が鮮明な７名の二世に聞き取りが実施できた。②戦時中の戒厳令下の状況について知見を得た。③戦前日系人が集住していたパホアにおいてグループインタビューを実施できた。

  • Hawaii Japanese Center 所蔵資料の整理と目録作成

    　昨年度実施したHawaiiJapanese Center (HJC)所蔵のハワイ関連43曲のレコードラベルスキャニングと音源のデジタル保存に引き続き、今回も現地日系人二世による楽曲、ハワイアンミュージックを中心に処理し、総数で92枚、楽曲数で142曲を洗浄、分類,ラベル撮影、デジタル化した。また、5月13日にHJCにおいて、本プロジェクトの進捗状況を報告し、早稲田大学移民・エスニック文化研究所、早稲田大学人間総合研究センター、科学研究費などによる支援で2008年から約10年間サンパウロ、ロサンゼルスなどで実施してきた在外日系人関連資料プロジェクトの概要について発表した。また、山崎名誉教授によるデジタル化された音源のデモンストレーションも実施した。

  • 布哇日系人会館所蔵文書資料の整理と目録作成

    　本研究は、2015年度に採択された特定課題Ａ（一般助成）「ハワイ島の「埋もれた過去」の保存と整理—布哇日系人会館所蔵資料のデジタル化および目録作成」で端緒についた布哇日系人会館(Hawaii Japanese Center, 以下、HJC) 所蔵資料の整理を継続、進展させることが目的であった。具体的には、①資料整理の現状把握、②文書・音声資料のデジタル化、③目録の設計を行う計画をたてた。本年度はHJC所蔵レコード約7000点のうち、ハワイおよびハワイ日本人移民関連のレコード43曲のレコードラベルスキャンニングと音源のデジタル保存を行った。和書の整理については、今回は日本語学校関連資料の整理とデジタルスキャンニングを中心に実施した。

  • ハワイ島における「埋もれた過去」の保存と整理－布哇日系人会館所蔵資料のデジタル化および目録作成

    本研究の目的は、ハワイ島ヒロ市のHawaii Japanese Center（布哇日系人会館） 所蔵の和書整理と目録作成のための予備調査である。本年度は2015年11月と2016年3月の2度現地に赴き実施した。2015年11月初旬の5日間、現地を訪れハワイ大学ヒロ校本田正文准教授とパット・オカムラ元ハワイ大学図書館司書に会い、和書資料の整理状況について聞き取りをした。第2回目の訪問は2016年2月29日から3月2日の3日間、約20時間かけて未整理書籍約3000冊を分類した。助手1名、大学院生2名が同伴し、現地スタッフ2名、ボランティア2名と共に可動式ラックに保管されていた書籍を作業室において分類した。仕分けは現地スタッフが作成した分類表を基本的な分類項目とし、作業の過程で微調整、細分化した。また、倉庫に保存されている物品類についても目を通し、所蔵資料の全体像を把握した。

  • 帰米二世と二つの「郷里」―トーマス・太郎・比嘉を事例に―

    　本研究では、沖縄系ハワイ帰米二世・比嘉太郎の様々な功績の中から、全米「巡講」に焦点を定め調査した。比嘉太郎は、1944年、静養旅行中に訪れたコロラド州アマチ日系人強制収容所や複数箇所でヨーロッパ戦線での日系米兵の実情を伝える講演を行った。各地で講演が好評を博したことを知った全米日系人市民連盟の城戸会長が、米陸軍省および戦時転住局を説得し共催で講演旅行を実施することになった。「巡講」は、当初の計画を大幅に上回り、全米各地で主に日本人移民、日系人に対して6ヶ月にわたって実施された。本調査では、UCLA JARPコレクションや沖縄県公文書館、沖縄県立図書館郷土資料室の資料を中心に調査し、関係者に聞きとりを行った。

  • 日米の文化的仲介者としての帰米二世－比嘉太郎のライフヒストリーを事例に－

    本研究では、移民が郷里と定住先で果たした社会的貢献について、比嘉太郎(Thomas Taro Higa)(1916-1984)を事例に調査した。比嘉太郎は、沖縄系移民の二世で沖縄、大阪、ハワイを往還した「帰米二世」の県系人である。沖縄県公文書館所蔵「比嘉太郎文書」とUCLA図書館のJARP(Japanese American ResearchCollection)所蔵資料を中心に調べ、二つの異なる文化の橋渡し役を果たしたトーマス比嘉太郎を通じて、移民と郷里の紐帯をマクロ、メゾ、ミクロの複合的な観点から考察した。　本調査の成果の一部は、American Anthropological Association 112th AnnualMeeting (Chicago)において“The Kibei As Cultural Mediator: The Case of ThomasTaro Higa”とのタイトルで発表した。発表では、次のようにまとめた。By fully utilizing his Social and Cultural capital,Taro Higa lived his turbulent life with dignity and resilience.　He may have been a “misfit” in his own eyes.　However, he endured many hardships in order to maintainhis dignity and positive outlook.

    本研究の調査目的は次の3点であった。(1)『日英布會話書』（1918年）を分析し、20世紀前半のハワイにおける社会言語的接触状況を探る。(2)日系人及びハワイ先住民へのインタビューを通して、双方の社会的・文化的接触に関するデータを収集する。 (3)日本語新聞などの文献を調査し、日本人移民とハワイ先住民の交流に関する記事を探す。また、ハワイ語文献に関して海外共同研究者の助力を得て調査する。 （1）の『日英布會話書』に関する分析で明らかになったことは、日本人とハワイ人の関係よりも、ハオレ（白人）とハワイ人の主従関係である。同書の内容はすべてエクセルファイルに入力してあり、詳細な分析については今後も続行していく。　 調査期間中は、むしろ（2）に多くの時間を割いた。近年、盛んになりつつあるハワイ語復興運動において中心的な役割を担っているハワイ大学ヒロ校ハワイ語学部助教授のラリー・キムラ氏（父親が日系二世、母親がハワイ先住民とスコットランド人の混血）やカウアイ島ケカハにあるハワイ人学校ケ・クラ・ニイハウ・オ・ケカハの校長ハウナニ・スィワード氏（父親日系二世、母親ハワイ先住民）などにインタビューした。また、ラリー・キムラ氏を、同校ハワイ語学部教授ピラ・ウィルソン氏、言語学科教授本田正文氏と共に、2004年6月に早稲田大学で開催した日本移民学会第14回大会でのラウンドテーブルにパネリストとして招聘し、ハワイ語復興の経緯と現状及びハワイ先住民と日本人移民の歴史的な関係についてお話いただいた。ハワイ語学部のお二人の話からも、ハワイ語復興運動に関して、日系人が陰日向で活躍している事実が判明した。この招聘は当該特定課題研究によって可能となったものであり、大変感謝している。　 第3点目の文献調査については、最近になって1834 年から1948年までのハワイ語新聞の存在が明らかになり、現地ハワイ人研究者の協力を得て、日本人移民とハワイ人の接触に関する文献を探ってゆく予定である。以上、2年間の調査期間で得た知見、人的ネットワークの広がりは当初の予想を上回るものであった。ただし、言語接触に関する調査は未だ十分な分析と考察がなされておらず、残された課題である。　研究成果については、部分的に扱ったものが1点、刊行予定のものが1点あるが、調査そのものはまだ端緒が開かれたばかりである。今後とも継続的に実施し、ハワイ先住民と日本人移民の接触の歴史的研究と言語使用に関する理解を深めていきたい。

  • 境界人としての移民－ある日系ブラジル人と母語教育運動をめぐって

    　本研究では、次の2点について明らかにする計画を立てた。（1）長野県松本市在住のある日系ブラジル人仲里眞榮ロドリーゴ氏のライフヒストリーを作成する。（2）仲里氏が松本市に開校した外国語学校「ニッポラチナ外国語学校」の調査を通して、母語学校が日系ブラジル人コミュニティーに果たす役割を調査する。　申請者は、異なる複数の文化に身を置く人びとのライフヒストリーの作成に関心を持ち、その一環として本研究を位置づけている。仲里氏はブラジルのサントス市に生を受け、その後、母親と妹と共に沖縄に渡り戦中・戦後の過酷な生活を体験した。仲里氏は、戦後に再度ブラジルに戻り苦労を重ねたのちに、1989年に再来日し、昨年9月に日系ブラジル人児童の母語教育のための外国語学校を設立した。本研究では、この人物のライフヒストリーの記述を通して、国境を越えて往来する人々の言語・教育面について検証することを目的とした。研究目的（１）については、延べ７時間に及ぶインタビューをテープ（またはミニディスク）起こしする作業が進行中である。今後もこの作業を継続し、あわせて関連事項の調査を進めていきたい。また、幸いにも仲里氏から昔の写真や学校関連の書類など貴重な資料が提供されているので、有効に利用したいと思っている。研究目的（２）の外国語学校については、２度参与観察を行いビデオ撮りした。景気後退の影響を受けて、在留日系ブラジル人の数も減少し、生徒数も週単位で変化している。ブラジル政府からの単位認定は許可されたものの、相次ぐ教員の交代や遠隔地への生徒の送迎など問題は山積している。これらの難題をいかに克服し、対処していくのかについて記録しまとめていきたい。　尚、研究成果については学会誌を発表の場とする予定である。将来的には、学術書としての刊行も考えている。

  • 戦前・戦中期における米国日系新聞の言語使用に関する調査研究

    　本研究は、戦前・戦中期における米国日系人の日英語の混在使用状況を日系新聞に素材を求め調査するものであった。今回の調査では、戦前・戦中に発行された日系新聞中の日本語記事に現地特有の英語表現がどのような形で介入しているのかを、時系列的に整理することを目的とした。しかし、調査を進める過程で、日系新聞よりも校閲度の少ない特定団体を対象とした雑誌に素材を求めた方が、本件の調査目的にはより適切であると判断した。したがって、当初使用を予定していた新聞ではなく、日系庭園業組合の組合誌である『庭園』誌（湾東庭園業組合）を利用することとした。　『庭園』誌をとりあげた理由としては、次の２点があげられる。第１に、組合誌という性質上、投稿者の文章が校正される可能性（したがってカタカナ表記の訂正される頻度も）が低いこと。第２に、組合員の多くが所謂「帰米二世」（戦前日本で教育を受けた二世）であり、したがって日本語能力を一定度保持している読者であることがあげられる。また、同誌は、1958年に創刊されて以来、現在までほぼ毎月発行され続けており、長期にわたる観察が可能であることも根拠としてあげることができる。今回の調査では、同誌の1958年11月号（創刊号）から1959年11月号までの１年間あまりをサンプルとしてとりあげた。サンプルの雑誌から、植物名を除いたすべてのカタカナ表記を抜き出し、（１）発音が表記に影響を及ぼした例、（２）日常生活に頻出する語の２つに大別した。さらに、（１）については、（Ａ）[o]が[a]に変化した場合、（Ｂ）日系人特有の発音、（Ｃ）その他に下位区分し、（２）は、（Ａ）生活・趣味関連の語、（Ｂ）職場・組合関連用語に便宜上分類した。なかでも興味深いのは（１）－（Ａ）「[o]が[a]に変化した場合」で、スコットがスカットになり、トムがタムに、コミティーがカミテー、ボブがバブ、ポットラックがパットラック、コンテストがカンテスト、スポットがスパット、ジョニーがジャニー、コンベンションがカンベンションなどと表記されていた。今回の結果を踏まえて、今後はさらに『庭園』誌を長期的に調査検討し、データの整理分類をより精緻化するとともに、40年余にわたる時の流れの中でどのような変化がおきているのかを検証してみたい。

  • 米国日系二世の教育問題―1930における二世の日本留学を中心に

    1930年代半ばから1940年代半ばにかけての10年間は、時代の荒波に翻弄された米国日系二世を象徴的に物語る波瀾万丈の時代であった。10万人余の日系人が米国籍の有無を問わず鉄条網の内側に収容された強制収容所体験、祖国アメリカへの忠誠心を血で証明せざるをえなかった二世部隊442連隊の犠牲と功績、また、対米宣伝放送にかかわった容疑で反逆者のレッテルを貼られた「東京ローズ」等々、太平洋の東西いずれに身をおいても日系二世は数奇な道のりを歩む運命にあった。　米国に生を受け、米国籍も得ながらその出自ゆえにセカンドクラス・シチズンとしての地位を余儀なくされた二世は、社会心理学用語「マージナル・マン」の定義に適合する。それは、生まれ育った米国の地においても、「祖国」日本に「回帰」してみても、言語的・文化的差異ゆえにマージナルな立場におかれる運命にあったからである。　本研究では、マージナル・マン概念の視座から第２次世界大戦前後の留日米国日系二世を照射する試みを行った。いわゆる「第二世問題」とは何だったのか、また、当時の留日学生はどのような状況下にあったのかについて概観するとともに、留学体験者の手紙、回想記、インタビュー等をもとに1930年、40年代における留日二世のマージナル・マン的位相を考察した。　マージナル・マン概念は、1920－30年代にロバート・パークをはじめとする社会学者によって提唱された、いささか古典的な概念ではあるが、境界線上の時空を浮遊する人々の存在とそのダイナミズムをとらえる意味において、そのコンセプトは有効であり、また留日日系二世のおかれたような歴史的状況における事例を扱う場合においても有用であろう。しかし、一方でマージナル・マン概念の検討課題は少なくない。今後は、ストーンキストのライフサイクルの類型化に関する考察を深めるとともに、日系二世を中心とした様々な事例を検討してゆきたいと思っている。
