    This study aimed to examine how English language education at the elementary level is being promoted in China under the Belt and Road Initiative. A survey of Chinese elementary schools revealed a number of noteworthy education policies. These include the training of a large number of elementary school English teachers who will use English as the language of instruction, enhanced teacher training, use of awards to increase teacher motivation, learning and dissemination of information about China in English, and the use of information and communications technology in the classroom. We then compared these against English language teaching in Japanese elementary schools and conclude that, above all, English language education at the elementary level in China serves as the social foundation for the Belt and Road Initiative.There is much for Japan to learn from China's English education, including the training of high-level elementary school English teachers in China.

    This project reached the following findings. First, in the discourse of the Belt and the Road Initiative, the oldness of the Silk Road becomes more important tie. Second, the discourse of the Silk Road and its geopolitical significance has been utilized by the big economic powers for centuries repeatedly. Third, the soft power of the Kongzi Institute has been fully employed to boost pro-Chinese international atmosphere in the countries along the Belt and Road Initiative. Fourth, the freedom of religion has been under the strict control through the anti-terror campaign, the Sinicization of religions, and the appearance of the discourse of “religious risks” after 2016. This campaign affects religious faith and suspends free international migration flow. Many Muslims with the Islamic learning experience have now lost the Islamic career. Fifth, in place of Muslims in China, English speaking Han Chinese has become the main actors of international trade with Islamic regions.

    This study attempted to obtain policy implications for the social integration of Muslim minority and non-Muslim majority populations through the comparative analysis of correlates of halal food consumption behaviors among Muslims in East Asia (Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and China) and Western Europe (Belgium, France, Netherlands and UK) with different degrees of secularization and different policies toward religious minorities. While Japan is expected to have an increasing number of Muslims, the changes in population and family, local community, public policy and technology in Western Europe from the 1990s to present suggest to her the necessity of social integration policies regarding food toward Muslim migrants and their family (descendants) by the local government in response to the local conditions.

    Based on an analysis of learning behaviors and exchanges of values and information at school, family, community and cyber space, this study explored (1) how Chinese people in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and other regions in the world have identified themselves in relation to “China”, and (2) how their identities made about “China” have linked with their perceptions of nationalism. Action research method was taken by involving students and teachers in movie workshops. It is ultimately aimed that findings of this study would help us discover significant concepts and factors that are valuable for more open international relationship and development of civil education.

    This study examined ethnic awakings of the peripery ethnicities of China. We clarified how the modern education and the development of media gave impacts to ethnic awakings in the first half of the twentieth century. Sino-Muslims strenghtened Muslim awareness and natinal identity by the promotion of modern education and the publication of ethnic media. Consequently, traditional madrasa education with Persian knowledge became disappered. Mongolians under Japan's ocupation took advantage of Japanese military education and training, which gave them hopes to build their own country, independent from Japan, China and Russia. Koreans strenghtened national conciousness by education conducted by anti-Japanese Korean teachers in Northeast China. Ethnic elites of the Southwest tried to ask for their own ethnic rights. They were decendents of traditional tusi or hereditary headsmen and modern Chinese governments including the Republican regime and the Communist regime also made use of the system.

    The purpose of this study is to explore the reality of success or struggle of ethnic culture in ethnic minority families in China by analyzing the enrollment, migration, and transformation under social change after the 1980s.
    The following conclusions were obtained from the study:(1) Many ethnic minority women work in distant cities with the spread of modern education. These women are free from the tradition of their ethnic culture.(2) Some of the ethnic minority women marry into other ethnic groups. It is very difficult for them to preserve their cultural legacy after marriage; there is a discontinuity of the woman’s cultural inheritance in such a marriage.(3) Parents of many ethnic minority children work away from their hometown. Many children are separated from their parents and live alone in a school dormitory. The separation of a family and its effect on the child’s education pose a serious sociological problem and can hinder the continuity of their own culture.

    This study focused on the acculturation of life styles (in the four dimensions of family, religious group, economic activity, and education) through the transcultural interaction between Muslim minority and non-Muslim majority in East Asian societies and aimed at clarifying the situation and challenges of coexistence of Muslims and non-Muslims in these societies. The results of cross-national, historical and institutional analyses suggest that local-level integration policies or multicultural coexistence policies based on the situation in each local community are preferable to the national-level unitary integration policy in Japan, where Muslim minority population is small but diverse and non-Muslim majority population is also diverse in terms of the interaction with Muslims.

    (1) College students, particularly young women from ethnic minorities, find it difficult to obtain employment after graduation. Therefore, after graduating from junior and senior high schools, such female students prefer to leave their local communities and work in distant cities instead of joining college. (2) Women from ethnic minorities are expected to preserve their cultural legacy. However, this is very difficult for them to do because they migrate from their local communities after marriage. (3) English has been introduced as a compulsory subject in elementary school curriculums in China. Minority groups find learning English to be a burden, especially those that have their own character. Many ethnic minority students study Chinese and English in compensation of their mother tongue. Strategy about foreign language is different among ethnic minorities. (4) In order to facilitate reconciliation among ethnic minorities and to encourage them to regain pride in their cultural backgrounds, it is very important to introduce multicultural education in Chinese schools.

    Focusing on the Korean and the Hui nationalities in China, we made a comparative study on the relationship between ethnic education and ethnic identity. We conducted a survey to investigate their ethnic socio-historical relations. We have found the following facts. First, those who experienced ethnic(formal or non-formal) education maintain strong ethnic identity and pride. Second, based on ethnic networks, they make full use of their bilingual skill when China has become a global economic power and needs translators and traders, while some immigrate abroad for study or odd-job to their"imaginary homelands". These two nationalities are"exceptionally successful"in term of ethnic education and economic prosperity.

    This research project had three main purposes. We made our research according to those three purposes and gained achievements below. At first, our project aimed at investigating the condition of the cross-bordering migration of Chinese Muslims. Chinese Muslims move not only inside domestic terrain but immigrated abroad and settled in Southeast Asia, Central Asian, or Middle Eastern countries because of the oppression, seek for knowledge, labor migration or pilgrimage to Mecca. We could get the basic information on how the migration had influenced the relationships between migrated Chinese Muslims and receiving countries or regions, and at the same time how it changed the cultures of Chinese Muslims. Second, we intended to seek for how the Islamic knowledge had been moving or how the trans-bordering (either domestic movement or international migration) commercial network had been constructed along with the migration Chinese Muslims. Thirdly, our project designed to explore their cultural change on the level of ordinary religious practices influenced by their migration or circulation of Islamic knowledge in terms of Islamic resurgence. We could understand religious practices had been transformed both to the direction of Islamic resurgence and to that of the rise of local religious practices.

    This research project defines ‘globalization' as the movement of ‘people', ‘resources', ‘money' and ‘ideas' beyond the national boundaries, and aims to clarify how such a globalization changes the traditional values and cultures peculiar in the various communities, and how people living there react those changes, and how they recreate them as learning problems.
    In 2003 fiscal year, the members of our project gave the "Keynote Proposal" to Japan Society for the Study of Adult and Community Education special symposium in celebration of its 50^<th> annual national conference and held a symposium in Kyoto University and discussed the way of the collaboration of our research. At the same time, each of the members carried out the research in USA, China, Korea, and Taiwan.
    In 2004 fiscal year, in order to clarify the substantial impact of the globalization to the change of the practice in community education by analyzing the educational content and method, we carried out the on-site research in Thailand, China, Korea and Taiwan, as well as research of literature on this subject. In the meetings for the study which were held five times in Tokyo and Kyoto, we discussed result of the research and found that the common subjects (labor, health, welfare, peace, ecology, gender, sexuality, information technology, population problem) are appearing and being reestablished as learning problems in community education in these areas beyond the national boundaries.
    The result of the research project was arranged in the final report.

  • 東アジアの家庭教育にみる家族の記憶と文化継承

    本研究は、「家族の記憶」が、どのように次世代に継承され、子どもの社会化においていかなる役割を果たしているのかという視点から、戦後（1945年～2020年代）における東アジア地域（日本、中国、韓国、台湾）の家庭教育を比較検討する。とくにＢ．バーンスティンの文化伝達理論の枠組みを応用して、家族の記憶を、食、住まい（家）、娯楽と文化、年中行事などに焦点を当てて検証していく。本研究では、家族における文化伝承の担い手としての女性に注目し、祖母（80代前後）―母（50代～60代）―娘（20代～30代）の３代に対するライフストーリー・インタビューの手法用いて分析する。さらに本研究においては、アジア・太平洋戦争に伴う家族の苦難の記憶の克服と次世代継承のありようを包括的に考察する。戦時下から戦後にかけて越境した日本人引揚者、エスニック・マイノリティといった家族を視野に入れた文化伝達の教育社会学的研究はまだ少ない。社会の周辺に位置する家庭を視野に研究を行うことで、東アジア社会における家族の記憶の想起と交流の上に構築される平和を希求する新たな家庭教育研究の理論化と実証を目標とする。2023年度においては、東京、札幌、那覇、豊中において、3世代（祖母―母―娘）、もしくは2世代（祖母―母）に対するインタビュー調査を試行的に行いながら、質問票を確定した。また、家族の記憶の中で、とくに「食」を中心とした調査を行った。上の世代の「食」が下の世代の「食」へと継承されている傾向が全体としてはうかがわれた。また、「食」によって、家族がつながっていること、「食」によって家族の記憶が次の世代に継承されていることも指摘しておきたい。しかしながら、共稼ぎの増加に伴い外食が増加する傾向も顕著であり、このことが、家族の記憶の継承にどのような影響を与えているのか、今後、引き続き検証していきたい。

  • 「家族の文化」の継承に関わる基礎的研究―記憶をつなぐ装置をめぐって

    本研究の目的は、それぞれの家族が持っている文化（価値観、規範的意識）は、どのような形で次世代に継承されるのか、家族の記憶を次の世代に伝えるツールとは何かを検討することである。検討の結果、これまで家族の文化の代表と考えられてきた年中行事が個人化に向かう傾向にあり、家族の文化を伝えるツールとしての意味を次第に失いつつあることが指摘できる。一方で、近年の家族の子育てにおいて、親が子どもの絵本を読んで聞かせる読み聞かせが重視されている。そして、絵本が家族の絆を強める役割を果たし、絵本を通じて価値伝達が行われていること、絵本の読み聞かせを通じて、家族の文化が次世代に継承されていることが明らかになった。

  • 東アジア地域における家庭教育と規範的文化継承に関する国際比較研究

    本研究は、1930年代から現在に至るまでの約80年間を俯瞰しながら、文化伝達による子どもの社会化ついて、東アジア地域の家族（祖父母・父母・子の３世代）を比較しながら検証しようとする試みである。台湾、中国、日本において調査を実施した。台湾については、①蘭しょ島における少数民族（3家族）、②台北を中心とする3世代家族（７家族）、合計10家族の調査を実施した。中国においては、15家族、日本では5家族へのインタビューを行った。また台湾・中国文化大学から林雅音助理教授を招へいし、国際ラウンドテーブル＜東アジア地域における家庭教育比較研究＞（2019年9月15日、社会教育学会研究大会、早稲田大学）を開催し、成果を発表した。

    本研究は、1930年代から現在に至るまでの約80年間を俯瞰しながら、文化伝達による子どもの社会化ついて、日本及び台湾の家族を比較しながら検証しようとする試みである。2018年5月及び11月に台湾を訪問して、血縁関係にある3世代（祖父母・父母・子）のインタビュー調査を実施した。対象者は9家族及び8人、合計35人であり、外省人、内省人、原住民（タイアル族、アミ族）など、多様である。日本においては日本人家族（3家族）の他、華僑家族（2家族）へのインタビューを実施した。また台湾・中国文化大学から林雅音准教授を招へいし、家庭教育国際ワークショップ＜生活文化と民族文化の伝達・親から子へ＞（2018年７月、早稲田大学）を開催した。

  • 東アジア地域の華人社会における家庭教育に関する研究

    本研究は、1930年代から現在に至るまでの約80年間を俯瞰しながら、文化伝達による子どもの社会化ついて、東アジア地域における華人社会の家族を比較しながら、検証しようとする試みである。換言すれば東アジア各国の家庭教育の特徴を明らかにし、戦前、戦後、そして現代に到る家族における文化伝達の継承・断絶の実態を、比較検討することが本研究の目的である。研究手法としては、文化伝達をよりリアルなものとして把握するため、ライフストーリー・インタビューを用いた。具体的には、各国における①1930年代～40年代生まれ、②1950年代～70年代生まれ、③80年代～90年代生まれ、以上の3世代にインタビュー実施した。　インタビューを実施したのは、中国、台湾、台湾少数民族,日本に在住の台湾人華僑であり、各国（各民族）の家庭教育について検証した。東アジア地域の共通の傾向として、戦後の社会変動の中においても、家庭教育を通じて、規範意識の継承が行われていることが確認された。また、台湾・中央研究院から游鑑明研究員を招へいし、国際フォーラムを開催した(The International Forum&nbsp; Social Change and Education in East Asian Countries: Based on an Analysis of Life Story )。。

  • 少年兵の研究　-日中戦争時期の少年少女の戦時動員を中心として-

  • 東アジア地域における小学校英語教育に関する国際的比較研究

    2015年には、英語教育の授業見学及び教員調査を、①天津市実験小学校、②吉林省朝鮮族居住地域の中学・高校、③雲南省少数民族地域（ナシ族）の小学校、以上の３地域で実施した。天津市実験小学校は、天津では有数の進学校である。すべて英語を使っての授業で、英語構文を使っての頻繁なペアワークや、レベルの高い英作文教育が行われていた。一方、現在、少数民族地域においても、家庭の条件が良い児童・生徒は、都市部の学校に進学する。そのため、農村部の学校に残された児童・生徒は、出稼ぎ者の子どもたちが多く、英語学習にも、あまり学習に意欲を感じられない生徒もいる。英語教育が中国における教育格差を強化しているという実情がある。

  • 教師のライフストーリーから見る中国教育史

  • 教師のライフストーリーから見る戦後日本教育史

    　近年、質的調査に対する研究関心の高まりとともに、ライフストーリー(人生の物語)といったタイトルの著作や論文が増え、社会学や文化人類学などの分野から聞き取りを基礎とする研究が数多く生み出されている。　ライフストーリーは、自己論(アイデンティティ論)と密接に関連しているが、それとともに、個人の語りを規定している文化制度としての「語り」を含む概念であり、教育学研究にとっても、重要な意味を持つと考えることができる。　本研究においては、教師、あるいは教師経験者（１９３０年代から５０年代生まれ）のライフストーリーに基づきながら、日本における戦後民主主義教育の実態を明らかにすることを目的としている。戦後民主主義の中で育ち教員となった教師たちが、現場においてどういった教育理念をもとに、どのような教育を行おうとして、どういった学生を育ててきたのかを検証する。具体的には、教師へのインタビューに依拠しつつ、関連文献と突き合わせながら、オーラルストーリー（口述史）を作品化した。 本研究プロジェクトでインタビューを実施した教師は、①１９４０年代生まれ、中学校・特別支援校教員、教育長経験者、②１９４０年代生まれ、小学校校長経験者、③１９５０年代生まれ、小学校校長経験者、④１９５０年代生まれ、小学校教育、大学教員経験者、⑤１９７０年代生まれ、僻地における教育コーディネーター、以上である。　また、本プロジェクトは、中国の北京師範大学教育学部との協力の上に進め、中国においても、小中学校教員及び教員経験者（１９３０年代から７０年代生まれ）の聞き書きを行っている。　日本側５本、中国側５本のライフストーリーを収録して、２０１４年６月に、中国の教育科学出版社から、書籍を出版予定である。　こうした日本及び中国における教員の聞き書きといった両国における研究を土台としながら、今後、日中両国を比較検討しつつ東アジアにおける戦後教員史を明らかにすることを将来的には構想している。
