    Williams syndrome (WS) is a multisystem genetic disorder caused by microdeletion of about 26 genes, most notably ELN, from chromosome #7 (7q11.23). Despite the syndrome being neurodevelopmental, WS adolescents and adults are marked by dissociations within and across domains of higher cognitive functioning, which raise important issues concerning language acquisition and cognitive modularity. This paper reviews two contrastive positions surrounding the issues: nativist and neuroconstructivist views. It then introduces a rare case with WS in a Japanese individual, which indicates unusual plasticity for language acquisition, and examines logical correlations between atypicality and modularity.

    Education-For-All (EFA), understood as an 'equal education opportunity for every single person on the globe', is a challenge of this century that cannot be met without advanced information technologies and instructional computing. One question we must address is whether EFA is a force that will advance social welfare and equality on a global scale or institutionalize differences in social class outlook EFA comes to achieve its principled reality only when the former is the case. This paper clarifies that a possible factor that may affect EFA negatively will be found in linguistic disparity, whose effect is characterized here as the 'linguistic divide'.
    The paper nonetheless reports that the emergence of automatic portable multilingual mediators (translators and interpreters), which I wish to call 'autolinguals', is forthcoming at an affordable cost in the very near future, and that logically this should overcome the linguistic divide.
    Given that EFA is a technical reality, the paper then directs its discussion to implications for the future of schooling.

    This paper discusses asymmetrically shared multiple causativization properties between the two types of causative predicates in Japanese. The discussion in turn addresses one of the recurring issues surrounding agglutinative languages concerning the grammatical status of morphology: whether it belongs in the lexicon or in syntax. It is argued that the most plausible view of morphology which would account for the multicausativity asymmetry is a third view, namely a theory of morphology that is neither entirely lexical nor entirely syntactic but both, depending on the type of affix in question.

    From the viewpoint of educational anthropology, this research investigated issues which local school children in multilingual societies face in public education, in which the unipolar concentration of English is accepted as a well-established norm especially in developing countries. The questionnaire survey on ‘language awareness’ is developed and conducted. The term ‘semilingualism’ is defined as a linguistic competence that is not fully developed to support conceptual thinking, and the semilingual phenomena are shown to occur behind the bilingual/multilingual competence. EFL (English as a lingua franca) and ENL (English as a natural language) are linguistically and functionally distinguished, and the mother-tongue language is justified as a most accessible language for conceptual thinking. Language divide is defined at the internal and externals levels, and a foundation is laid out for dissemination of the semilingual phenomena and language-divide with respect to English.

    A more inclusive framework of mental faculties (intelligence and metacognition) is developed, which are correlated with types of expertise (learning and achieving). In antecedent researches, two types of expertise are identified for typically developing individuals with normal IQ and age appropriate metacognition (MC): (a) adaptive expertise if they possess the ability to use MC; otherwise, (b) classical routine expertise.
    We considered the relevance of multiple intelligences as a way of looking at an individual as an integrated human being. Atypically developing individuals with intellectual disabilities belong to another type of expertise: (c) individuals with low intelligence and low MC, thus should be low expert, yet may reach routine expert when cognitively sensible unique training is provided. A frame of mental faculty correlations has been broadened, and experimented unique trainings contribute to practicing the notion of reasonable accommodations in educational settings.

    This research has investigated developmental disorders (referred to as Geek syndrome) and its related issues in universities in Japan and the Philippines. The result has shown that the students’ temperamental tendencies constitute an adequate element for curriculum development especially of communication-related subjects. Given that the student population in science and technology are most expected to develop effective communication skills using English, the research has suggested that ESP (English for Specific Purposes), using materials of basic mathematics and science, would be most appropriate.
    The research has raised the awareness of the continuum nature of abilities and disabilities, as well as the awareness of the dissociation between the notion of inclusive education and the unified curriculum in universities. It offered fundamental data for exploring possible solutions filling in the disclosed gap.

    This research has presented evidence for the neuroplasticity and autonomousnature of competence in processing and generatingphonological units in Williams syndrome. Basedon orthography-free phonological data obtained from the subject’s performance in backward ludling (a word-reversing language game), this research has shown that geminates and long vowels share acommon lexical structure. To unify the structures of the two longsegments, it introduced a new concept of ‘floating mora’ in phonological theory. Thisresearch has contributed to raising awareness about the linguistic relevance of atypical language, which in itself warrants proper linguisticinvestigation.

    　7番染色体の長腕部(7q11.23)から28前後の遺伝子（とりわけエラスチン遺伝子）が欠損して発症するウィリアムズ症候群(WS: Williams Syndrome)疾患児者は、知的障害を伴い、視空間認知や数学概念の理解を極度に苦手とする‘障害’がある一方で、優れた音感と言語表出能力は担保されており、相貌認知が良好で他者への共感性も高いなどの‘才能’を示すことを特徴とする。本事例研究は、このような認知的乖離現象（能力の山と谷）が顕在化するWS疾患児者の能力を多重知能の観点から観察し、通常の定型発達児者群を対象とする研究のみでは見えてこないメタ認知の全体像をより多角的に把握し、共生社会・インクルージョンの理念を学校教育において実現する一つのモデルを構築するためのパイロット・スタディとすることを目的とした。多重知能には論理・数学的知能、視覚・空間的知能、内省的知能、言語・語学知能、音楽・リズム知能等が含まれる。研究期間が一年未満の本研究では、前年度(2012年度)まで遂行してきた言語特化型の研究成果と連続性を持たせ、言語と音楽を中心にパイロット実験を行った他、被験者の通学する学校を訪問し、非定型的行動の全体像の理解に努めた。　前年度(2012年度)まで遂行した言語特化型の研究では、三つの言語リズム（ストレス型言語、シラブル型言語、モーラ型言語）のうち、一拍が等時間隔で生起するモーラ型言語音への反応が英語母語話者の被験者であっても良好であることを観察している。これは、視空間認知や算数概念の理解を極度に苦手とする‘障害’のために音符が読めないというWS疾患児者に対し、五線上に生起する音符の高低差を排除し、音符の長さを等間隔化し、加算による音符の長さの読み取りを排除した記譜法であれば、読むことができるということを予測させた。そこで、非定型発達児の音楽指導に経験のある音楽教師の協力を得て当予測の理に沿う教材を準備し、2013 年9月15日、栃木県宇都宮市栃木健康の森・多目的ホールにて開催した「才能と障害の接点―ウィリアムズ症候群―ことばと音楽のワークショップ」と題するワークショップにて音楽を指導した結果、当予測に沿う結果を得た。これは、指導法の工夫により、‘障害’を‘才能’に転化させることが可能であることの一例として、インクルーシブ教育のモデルになり得る結果でもある。　上記の活動がパイロット・スタディーとなり、才能と障害のインターフェイスをメタ認知と多重知能の観点から検証する研究計画が平成26年度科研費（基盤研究Ｂ）に新規採択された。本特定課題研究で計画した活動のうち、消化しきれなかった研究項目とデータの精査は、今後科研費の下で遂行していく。　当研究期間の最終段階で、東京音声研究会主催の講演会（2014年3月8日早稲田大学にて開催）にて招待講演を行い、WS疾患児者の多重知能が顕在化する認知的乖離現象を紹介した。＜演題＞非定型発達児にみる多重知能及び日本語における‘浮遊モーラ’の提唱－ウィリアムズ症候群の認知プロフィールより－　尚、米国ウィリアムズ症候群協会が７月２日-５日に開催する「2014 WSA National Convention」(開催地米国カリフォルニア州アナハイム市)に、保護者と教育者を対象とするセッション「Insights from Japan for Williams Syndrome」が採択されており、その中で「Reading Music without Music Notes」と題して本研究成果を講義する。

    ギーク症候群(Geek Syndrome)の異名をとる高機能自閉症・アスペルガー症候群は、社会性やコミュニケーションの障害を特徴とする一方で、時に高い集中力の伴う優秀な才能と併存するだけに、大学という教育機関に相当数の対象学生がいるものと推察される。身体障害、知的障害に加えて、第三の障害（広汎性発達障害／自閉症スペクトラム障害）としての認知が進みつつあるこの障害は、従来の還元主義的な脳科学ではその医学的・生物学的な要因の解明は難しく、教育現場においても実態を把握することは容易ではない。従って教育支援体制も未開拓の分野である。早稲田大学においては、「障がい学生支援室」と各学術院教学支援課のスタッフ、及び教育現場を預かる担当教員との連携で個々のケース毎に支援の対応がなされているが、その対象は身体障害学生に限定されているのが現実である。大学における非定型発達学生に関する実態のより体系的な把握と関係者への啓蒙が早急に望まれる。本調査研究では、以上のような現状認識と問題意識の下に、以下の活動を行った。１．大学生の気質調査質問表①とクリティカル・シンキング志向調査表②（双方ともに日本語版と英語版）を、以下の要領にていずれも本調査用に四択に改良し作成した。①（合計60問）　・The Autism-Spectrum Quotient (AQ)を測る指標としてBaron-Cohen, Wheelwright, Skinner, Martin, ＆ Clubley (2001)が作成し、標準化した50問とその邦訳版（若林、東條らによる）　・本調査用に作成した科目別の嗜好を調査する10問②(合計64問） ・MSLQ(motivated strategies for learning questionnaire)から：Critical Thinking Sectionから抽出した5問Self-efficacy Sectionから抽出した8問・Stapleton (2002)がアジアの学生の思考姿勢の調査に使った9問・平山＆楠見(2004)が提示した33項目にわたる質問表のから抽出した18問・Kruglanski, et al. (2000)が自己制御の二つの形態の測定に使った24問２．上記の質問表を用い、以下の学生を対象とするアンケート調査を行った。(a)早稲田大学理工学術院に学ぶ学部生250名(b)専門分野がより広範にわたる大学生200名（調査機関を介して）３．2012 年11月、琉球大学にて開催された「日本教育心理学会第54回総会」にて、英語教育センターの専任教員（同僚）３名と共にシンポジウムを主催し、本調査研究の中間発表・話題提供・問題提起を行った。（下記研究成果発表参照）４．米国において、シカゴ大学、MIT、ボストンカレッジ、ノース・イースタン大学を中心に、ギーク症候群という気質的要素が教育カリキュラム編成にどの程度考慮されているのかについての基礎的な情報収集を行った。また、Katharine Beals氏（「Raising a left-brain child in a right-brain world」の著者）と会談し、情報交換と今後の共同研究の可能性について議論した。尚、特別研究期間中の上野（連携研究者）は、客員研究員として滞在したシカゴ大学を中心に情報を収集した。以上の活動がパイロット・スタディーとなり、平成25年度科研費（挑戦的萌芽研究）に新規採択された。特定課題研究で計画した活動のうち、1年間では消化しきれなかった研究項目とデータの精査は、連携研究者と共に今後3年間に亘り科研費の下で実行し、新たな視点を加えて調査対象を広げ、FD研究会等で啓蒙活動を行っていく。

  • 形態論が許容する抽象性の限界について―言語変化が示唆する見解―

    　構造理論言語学が近年繰り返し提示している問題のひとつに、「文法理論が許容する抽象度」の問題がある。音韻論に始まったこの問題は、形態論と統語論にまで波及し、現在では次の問題の解明に注目が集まっている。　（a）空形態素の存在を仮定することは、文法上必要か。　（b）形態論が許容する抽象度の限界について、どのような可能性が考えられるか。本研究は、近年国内で幅広い層の注目を集めた日本語における敬語表現の変化「さ入れ」現象の構造分析（1999年度展開）をさらに発展させ、上記（a、b）の問題の解明を試みた。　まず、本研究者の先行研究成果と併せて次の結論を導いた。（1）敬意（謙譲）表現として使われる使役文の文法項は、常に一人称である話し手か、または二人称である聞き手に限られ、表層上には通常現われない。（2）「さ入れ」現象が発生する敬意表現の母体の述語構造は、深層上二重使役になっている。（3）二重使役の深層構造は、表層上は単純使役として現われるのが一般的であるのに対し、「さ入れ」の構造では「さ」が入ることにより、二重使役構造が表層上に現われてくる。　以上の分析結果に基き、（4、 5）を推論として導き、（a、b）に対する解明事項とした。（4）表層上には現われない二重使役の述語―項構造を表示するために、空形態素の存在を仮定することは必要である。（5）「さ入れ」現象は、文法項が空形態素となって表層上には現われない使役文に発生しており、二重使役構造を表層上の述語構造に反映させる機能を担っている。つまり、二重使役構造は、文法項の表層構造か、または述語の表層構造のいずれかに現われることになり、形態論が許容する抽象度は、いずれかの表層構造から読み取り可能な範囲においてのみ許容される、と結論付けることができる。以上の研究成果は、2000年11月30日に韓国科学技術研究所（Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology）に於いて開催されたThe Society of Natural Languages主催の学会にて講演した。当研究成果の普遍性については、今後の継続研究でさらに考察を進めていく予定である。

  • 言語変化の構造分析：『さ入れ』現象にみる使役構文の敬語構造について

    　近年国内で幅広い層の注目を集めた日本語における言語変化（「ら抜き」、「さ入れ」など）の是非をめぐる論議は、文化庁第２０期国語審議会の審議経過報告『新しい時代に応じた国語施策について』により、"平明、的確で、美しく、豊かな言葉"の重要性を指摘する教育的・社会的見地から「少なくとも公式な場での使用は控えたい」というひとつの規範的な方向性が示された。本研究では、敬語表現の一変遷とみられる「さ入れ」現象に焦点をあて、規範的解釈を超えて言語の本質的な機能・構造を模索する学問分野の視点から、次の２点を明らかにした。（1）使役構文が敬意度を高める文法上のメカニズムについて：使役の"主体－客体"という文法上の階層関係が敬意表現に関わっている。（2）「さ入れ」現象の深層構造と「さ」が入ることの文法的意味について：「さ入れ」が発生する母体の深層構造は二重使役構造になっており、この二重使役構造は「さ入れ」によって表層上に明確に現われてくること。以上の研究成果は、1999年8月、ブリティッシュ・コロンビア大学（カナダ）にて開催された国際歴史言語学会第14回大会にて発表し、形態論が許容する抽象度の問題等についての示唆をも含むものであることを確認した。これは、すでに先行展開した「ら抜き」の構造分析結果がフィンランド語等にも通じる普遍性の高いものであることを確認したのに続き、当初期待した成果を超える発見であった。また、1999年11月には香港大学の言語学リサーチ・セミナーにて、当研究成果である表層上の観察からは見えてこない言語変化の機能的側面についての招待講演を行なった。これらの成果を統合し、言語変化に反映される文法体系についての考察をさらに遂行していく予定である。

  • 国際社会における「プレゼンテーション」の技法

    　大学教育における研究指向方針が高まる中(cf.「学部縮小、院を中核に: 少子化時代の大学像諮問」(文相)、日経1997.11.1)、研究者を目指す学生が必要とするもののひとつに、研究成果をいち早く世界に公表し、真価を問うための基礎訓練があげられる。「研究発表のための基礎的な訓練」を目的にした科目は、米国においては分野を問わず多くの大学院プログラムの必須単位科目となっているが、日本の大学教育においても益々その必要性が認識されつつある。本研究では、国際舞台に通じる英語運用能力を定義し、プレゼンテーションの体系的なモデルを構築することを究極の目的に、次の基礎調査活動を行なった。(i)異文化が日々接触する国際企業内のコミュニケーションにまつわる実態の調査、(ii)発表者および聞き手・読み手それぞれの立場からの問題点の整理、(iii)プレゼンテーション数例のビデオ撮影。　上記調査活動を展開する過程で、90ヶ国以上で市場調査のサービスを提供しているA．C．ニールセン・ジャパン(米国資本)の協力と共鳴を得、社員を対象とした『英語意識改革』と題する２時間の講演を行なった(1998年８月28日午前9:30～11:30)。この中で、同一テーマについて日米の街頭でインタビューした映像を引用し、それぞれの話し手の論旨の展開を比較・分析して文化に固有のレトリックの存在を明確にした。また、非英語圏出身の人物、マザー・テレサの英語によるスピーチを取り上げ、言語学的な分析を行なって国際舞台に通用する英語運用能力の具体像を提示したことに共感と反響を得た。この講演内容は当テーマの継続研究資料の一端としてカセットテープに収録した。　当研究成果は英語科目の授業に活用する他、考察対象を複数の言語文化のレトリックへと拡大し、日本人にとっての英語の意味と絡めながら、より有効なプレゼンテーションの技法を伝授する実用指向の研究へと継続展開していく。

  • 束縛理論が示唆する使役の構造について：認知体系に基づく分析

    生成文法が呈示する代名詞の束縛理論は、心理経験動詞を述語とする文の表層構造には直接適用できないことが多くの言語において観察され、様々な分析が試みられてきた。統語論の枠内で遂行された先行研究は、心理経験動詞を使役動詞の一種と位置づけ、束縛理論をめぐる変則的な現象は使役動詞の主体が意志を伴わない無意志使役構造一般にみられる現象であることを示した。　本研究では、これらの先行研究が言及しなかった使役文のデータを発掘・分析し、無意志使役文の中でも変則的な束縛性を示さないものがあることを発見した。この発見は、意志使役 vs. 無意志使役という従来の使役文の分類に限界があることを示している。この発見をもとに、無意志使役構造に焦点を当てた分析を行い、次の結論に至った。(1) 使役動詞の主体という文法概念の規定には、認知過程が深く関わっていること。(2) 主体の認知は一文法項目の認知であるが、深層においては述語が関わる文レベルの認知となっており、２種類あること。(3) Franz Brentano(1924)がその哲学的考察の中で呈示した文レベルの判断基準“thetic vs. categorical judgment”の区別が使役動詞の主体の認知に適用できること。(4)この判断過程の分類が意志使役 vs. 無意志使役という従来の分類に取って代わるべきであること。(5)使役動詞の深層上の主体という観点から、無意志使役構造にも２種類あること。(6)使役の表層上の客体が深層上の主体になっているときのみ、変則的な束縛性を示すこと。(7)心理動詞はすべて(6)のケースと一致すること。　以上、本研究は代名詞の束縛性という統語現象に認知要素が関わっていることを証明し、理論言語学と認知言語学が融合する可能性についての問題提起とした。本研究成果は、第16回国際言語学者会議(於パリ1997年7月)と第24回LACUS Forum(於トロント1997年8月)にてそれぞれ視点を変えた発表を行い、分析の妥当性と普遍性についての確認を行った。研究成果の発表：1998年12月　Oxford： Elsevier Science Actes du 16É　 CongrÉ　s International des Linguistes (Paris 20-25 juillet 1997), ed.
