  • Feeling Right Matters: The Impact of Character Design–Appeal Match on Social Media Engagement

    ABSTRACT

In today's saturated digital environment, brands increasingly use characters to capture attention and engage consumers on social media. Yet little research has examined how brand character design interacts with advertising appeals in social media communication. Drawing on the stereotype content model and research on brand anthropomorphism, this research examines how two distinct character design styles, cute and cool, interact with warmth‐focused and competence‐focused advertising appeals. Across four experiments conducted in different product contexts, we find how the match between character design and advertising appeal influences customer engagement and brand attitude. The results reveal a matching effect. A cute character enhances customer engagement and brand attitude when paired with a warmth‐focused appeal, whereas a cool character produces stronger responses when paired with a competence‐focused appeal. Further analyses demonstrate that this effect occurs because matched combinations evoke a stronger sense of feeling right, which refers to the subjective experience that a message presentation feels appropriate or fitting. By identifying the psychological mechanism underlying character–appeal matching, this research contributes to the literature on brand characters and social media communication. Practically, the findings offer a strategic framework for marketers seeking to optimize brand character design and message framing on digital platforms in order to enhance consumer engagement and brand attitudes.

    　View Summary

Problem definition: Online retailers face the challenge of converting website traffic into actual purchases and profits. Specifically, the study examines how effective different forms of retargeting strategies are for engaging consumers who visit online stores but leave without making a purchase. Methodology/results: A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the impact of retargeting strategies offering free shipping (FSR) and free returns (FRR) on customer purchasing behavior and profitability. The key findings reveal that simple product reminders do not significantly boost purchases. In contrast, FSR and FRR implemented late in the shopping process led to significant increases in both purchase rates (18.6% and 31.6%) and targeting profitability (28.2% and 37.8%), respectively. Additional analyses with advanced machine learning methods of causal forest algorithms identified significant heterogeneity of the FSR and FRR effects. FRR was particularly effective among younger customers with less experience on the platform and when the abandoned product was of higher value. In contrast, FSR was more effective among older customers with longer tenure and when the product price was lower. Managerial implications: The findings benefit academics, managers, and decision makers by emphasizing the need for personalized retargeting strategies that address customers’ perceived risks, particularly in the later stages of the shopping process. The research highlights the importance of tailoring retargeting strategies to specific customer profiles to maximize effectiveness and retail profitability.

  • Connotative Congruency Effect Between Instrumental Timbre and Visual Design Features on Consumer Decision‐Making

    　View Summary

    ABSTRACT

Conducting online, controlled laboratory, and more realistic laboratory experiments, this study investigates how the connotative congruency between instrumental timbre and visual design affects consumer evaluation and choice behavior. The results demonstrate that consumers are more likely to respond positively to the target when the instrumental timbre of background music shares connotative meanings like bright, smooth, or heavy with a visual feature of the target. In addition, we identified that the connotative congruency effect is mediated by the sense of feeling right and excitement (i.e., high arousal positive emotion). A carefully‐controlled Study 3 and Study 5, which measured behavioral outcomes in a more realistic mock‐up corner drugstore, enhanced the ecological and external validity of the timbre‐vision connotative congruency effects. This is the first empirical marketing study on timbre‐vision congruency that covers comprehensive sets of connotative descriptions and reveals the mediating role of both feeling right and excitement.

    　View Summary

Consumers often abandon e-commerce carts, so companies are shifting their online advertising budgets to immediate e-commerce cart retargeting (ECR). They presume that early reminder ads, relative to late ones, generate more click-throughs and web revisits. The authors develop a conceptual framework of the double-edged effects of ECR ads and empirically support it with a multistudy, multisetting design. Study 1 involves two field experiments on over 40,500 customers who are randomized to either receive an ECR ad via email and app channels (treatment) or not receive it (control) across different hourly blocks after cart abandonment. The authors find that customers who received an early ECR ad within 30 minutes to one hour after cart abandonment are less likely to make a purchase compared with the control. These findings reveal a causal negative incremental impact of immediate retargeting. In other words, delivering ECR ads too early can engender worse purchase rates than without delivering them, thus wasting online advertising budgets. By contrast, a late ECR ad received one to three days after cart abandonment has a positive incremental impact on customer purchases. In Study 2, another field experiment on 23,900 customers not only replicates the double-edged impact of ECR ads delivered by mobile short message service but also explores cart characteristics that amplify both the negative impact of early ECR ads and positive impact of late ECR ads. These findings offer novel insights into customer responses to online retargeted ads for researchers and managers alike.

    　View Summary

Construal level theory (CLT), which has been receiving increasing attention in Consumer Behavior Studies, posits that people's evaluation toward items and incidents differs by the psychological distance between oneself and the object. When this distance is close, people mentally construe the object in terms of low-level, detailed, and contextualized features. In contrast, when the distance is far, they construe the same object in terms of high-level, abstract, and stable characteristics. Such difference in mental construal leads to different evaluation, preference, and behavior.<br>In Behavioral Economics, preference reversal along a time axis is called time inconsistency and has been studied mainly using "discounting". This research proposes that, by introducing the notion of discounting into the construal level theory, a wider class of preference reversal along psychological distance beyond a time axis can be explained. Survey studies on peoples' lottery choice are used to illustrate the points.

In dealing with the present uncertain market environment three principal measures are being taken: micromarketing, the strategic use of information systems, and strategic alliances. Each is closely involved in the new intrachannel relationship that is the change from competition to cooperation. This paper outlines these three methods and introduces the MID (Marketing Intelligence Development organization), a joint R&amp
D group of manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers, as an example of intrachannel cooperation in Japan. © 1994 by The Haworth Press, Inc. All rights reserved.

    　View Summary

We report two studies designed to investigate the semantic differential associations that people hold with instrumental timbre. The first study examined semantic associations with instrumental timbre amongst participants from the UK, Japan, and Africa. A second study investigated the effects of matching the semantic differential congruency of auditory timbre with different material properties shown in promotional videos. The results revealed that matching semantic differential congruency enhanced both the experience of ‘feeling right’ and the participants’ emotions, leading to the video being liked more, and the product itself receiving more positive responses. We believe that the matching of unrelated auditory and visual stimuli (instrumental timbre and visually-presented materials) on the basis of their semantic differential congruency offers a novel approach to sensory marketing. This study also provides a theoretical contribution to the literature on multisensory experience design by highlighting the mediating role of the subjective experience of ‘feeling right.’

    　View Summary

It has been pointed out in the past that the phenomenon of preference reversal can be explained by a natural change in consumer preferences as time passes, as a consequence of the discrepancy in the cnstrual levels, as well as a response to sensory and physical stimuli. We have conducted empirical research on this subject and compiled the new findings pertaining to these various effects. By focusing on processing fluency and embodied cognition as the theoretical underpinnings of changing consumer preferences due to sensory stimuli, we have compiled the instances of changes in preferences that were triggered by the weight of product packaging, the position of product imagery, the background color, etc., and examined the mechanism behind this phenomenon. These findings constitute a significant contribution to academic research that is related to preference reversal in consumer behavior and sensory marketing.

    　View Summary

We focus on the consumer choice behavior considering choice environment and purpose. As a result, we have found that psychological distance between consumer and subject can influence choice strategy and results. In addition, we have detected the "direction of comparison" effect. Finally, we have systematically organized these issues based on our findings.

Based on a hypothesis that consumers’ evaluation and choice behavior becomes more abstract when psychological distance (time, space, degree of intimacy etc.) is large, we investigated the determining factors of customer satisfaction across various purchase situations and obtained supportive results. Also, we have made some progress in measuring abstractness of consumers’ thinking.
