    In this research project, we investigated how social activists in modern Japan have used screen projection media such as films or lantern slides for propaganda, education, and documentation of their activities. We have collected and researched primary materials such as films, slides, or scripts that were independently produced and screened as part of social movements.
    We have revealed several facts about important cooperation between social movements and independent production and screening of films and lantern slides in post World War II Japan. We have also revealed relationships between organizations and individuals involved in such activities. In addition, we were able to discover, restore, preserve, and open to the public a number of valuable primary materials.

    In postwar period, although people were eager for reading publications, there were not enough publications. This was because the printing and publishing functions in metropolitan areas were lost in air raids, and papers supplies from oversea land were also lost.
    These local magazines have not been collected systematically and under tendency of dispersion. In this cooperative research, we conducted a comprehensive survey of these magazines by collecting old books and researching in the Prage Collection (known as documents of censorship which carried out in the occupation period) and in libraries of various regions. The result is “Dictionary of Local Magazines in the Occupation Period” which will publish in 2022.

    Japanese term "gentou" (originally a translation of the English "magic lantern") means the projection system enlarging and projecting still images onto a large screen. Most studies argue that these still-image projection media declined in the early twentieth century Japan with the arrival of the motion picture. So there were few studies on the post-cinematic gentou history in Japan. However, in this research project, we tried to shed light on the revival and redevelopment of gentou in mid-twentieth-century Japan, focusing on gentou in the post-war social movements. We discovered several gentou films and scripts used in various post war social movements, including labor disputes, social welfare movements, and so on. We did interviews people involved in gentou movements or their families, and clarified several unknown facts about production, distribution, and screening gentou in 1950s social movements. We also restored several important gentou films and showed them to the public.

    This research started from the arrangement of newly discovered documents at Tadao Yanaihara Research Institute of Student Issues and analyzed the changes in the awareness of the youth and student movement from multiple perspectives. Through an examination of the documents, it found out the the connection with the activities of the students’ magazine circle and The American Asia Foundation of the same research institute and re-situated the multi-layerness of the autonomy of the University in the postwar Japanese society. In addition, the cataloguing and digitilization of the documents of this project clearly presented their detailed contents and academic value. Through a placing to the public domain, these documents are open them to the public and for free use for future research. This research thus contributed to the scholarship in Japan.

    I have carried out my research in order to clarify the actual situation of the movement of "Kiroku(Reportage/Documentary)" in the broad meaning and the circle movement which was popular in the postwar Japan. The main achievements are: re-evaluation of Abe Kobo's experimentation with radio dramas and TV dramas in the relationship between SF and "Kiroku" in the broad meaning, research on the movement of Renkanga(Lianhuanhua) and Woodcut as a example of the relationship between Japanese circle movement and East Asia, especially mainland China.

Under this recognition, "postwar culture" which has been national history manner consideration, our project examined re-grasping the "Cold War culture". The project has been subjected to re-contextualize and inspect the intellectual history of "Japan" in the East Asia, yet the project found "war experience" was a major axis for Japanese intellectual history. The project studied how “the Asia-Pacific War experience" has been reviewed in the postwar era under the influence of the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Also the project especially concentrated on the elucidation of any summary has been made on Okinawa. The Cold War culture was often lay out to movies and popular fiction so that the project also examined Cold War Culture era movies. Our project forged the concept of the Cold War culture through these processes.

    We collected and preserved approximately 10,000 documentary films, including 4,000 negative films produced by Iwanami Productions. Among 6,000 of these, we compiled a database and opened up an online search system. In addition, we also held symposiums and workshops (screening seminars) for ten times in total, in order to discuss the image of the postwar Japan by utilizing the documentary films, which we collected and preserved. In result, we have published a series of books, titled "Documentary Film Archives" from University of Tokyo Press. Moreover, we produced and released a feature length documentary film, "Dream & Melancholy: Yoshino Keiji and Iwanami Productions", using our collection of documentary films. This feature film earned an award for excellence in the Documentary Film Category, Film Awards 2011 of the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan, and it was screened on various film festivals.

    戦後期の日本で広く普及していたサークル運動と広い意味での「記録」の運動の実態を明らかにするため、調査・研究を行なった。また、サークル運動において中心的なジャンルであり、しばしば共同的な形で制作された詩やルポルタージュなどの文学についても、同時代の前衛的な文学・芸術運動や政治運動との関連の中での研究を行なった。
    まず、「記録」の問題については、東京都現代美術館学芸員の関直子氏の協力を得て、「ルポルタージュ作家・グルメ作家としての桂ゆき」という講演を行なった。また、桜美林大学において行なわれたThe 17th Asian Studies Conference Japan (ASCJ)でのSession 25: Bundan Snark Panelにおいて、How the “Truth” Is Sponsored: Koyama Itoko and the Controversy over Dam Siteという研究発表を行ない、小山いと子の『ダム・サイト』という事実をもとにしたフィクションが引き起こした問題についての考察を行なった。
    さらに、当時の運動の一つの中心でもあった安部公房について集中的に研究し、国際学会であるAASでの口頭発表でFrom Bataille and Kafka to Abe Kobo: Via Okamoto Taro and the Night Societyを発表したのをはじめ、「安部公房が描いた2013年」、「安部公房の父・安部浅吉について」、「辺境からFrontierへ――The Frontier Within: Essays by Abe Kobo書評」といったエッセイ・書評や、『安部公房を語る 郷土誌「あさひかわ」の誌面から』といった共著などを刊行した。

    大内裕和『日本の奨学金はこれでいいのか！』は、1950年代において大きな問題となった教育と貧困、教育の機会均等の問題が、その後どのように変容していったのかを考察する歴史研究の成果である。教育と貧困、教育の機会均等という1950年代に浮上した問題が、現在新たな意味をもつようになっていることを明らかにしている。黒川みどり「日本近代部落史研究と被差別民」は被差別民に焦点を当て、これまでの日本近代部落史研究の捉え直しを行う研究成果である。また黒川みどり「文明中心移動説の形成」は、内藤湖南のアジア認識を対象として、日本近代思想史のあり方を植民地主義や差別の視点から相対化する研究成果である。長志珠絵『占領期・占領空間と戦争の記憶』「“CITY MAP OF KYOTO”**を「読む」―占領期研究序論―」「戦争の事後を考えるー東京市忠霊塔のゆくえ」は、戦後の占領期研究を、思想史的方法によって読みかえる試みである。1950年代論の新たな展開を行ったという点で、共同研究のテーマとも合致した貴重な研究成果である。水溜真由美「労働者の共同性とサークル運動 : 熊沢誠の「労働社会」論を手がかりに」は、労働者の共同性に着目して、サークル運動のあり方を考察した研究である。1950年代の地域文化活動のあり方に新たな視点を加えた研究成果である。鳥羽耕史「チャタレイ裁判と戦争」は、チャタレイ裁判を取り上げ、文学と戦争との関係を考察した研究成果である。石原俊『＜群島＞の歴史社会学』は、＜群島＞という周辺の視点から戦後日本や国民国家のあり方を再検討した歴史社会学研究の成果である。

  • 東アジアにおける前期冷戦文化の多角的考察

    本年度も冷戦文化研究会を定期的に開催し、各自の成果を共有することをおこなった（6月29日。11月17日。3月16日）。1950年代を扱った著作（中谷いずみ『その「民衆」とは誰なのか』青弓社、2013年）および、冷戦期の記憶のあり方を扱った著作（長志珠絵『占領期・占領空間と戦争の記憶』有志舎、2013年）の合評会を著者を招いて行った。また、石原俊（明治学院大学准教授）の報告がなされた。沖縄近現代史講義も継続させ、沖縄から比屋根照夫（琉球大学名誉教授）を招き、沖縄近現代史について報告してもらった。6月16日、9月7日、2月16日と、三回の報告を受けた。歴史を踏まえた現在の沖縄文化が議論の対象となり、比屋根の仕事の検討、および沖縄のいまをめぐって議論を重ねた。冷戦文化を理解するときに要となる沖縄の文化と歴史を学ぶ試みとして大きな成果を挙げた。本研究の成果を国際的に発信する試みとして、研究代表者・成田龍一と研究分担者の坪井秀人、鳥羽耕史が、安丸良夫（一橋大学名誉教授）、長志珠絵（神戸大学教授）とともに、10月16日～22日にかけてアメリカに出かけた。ニューヨークのコロンビア大学を会場として開かれたＭＪＨＷ（近現代日本学会）のパネルとして、戦後歴史学の再検討をおこない、安丸が基調講演、成田が報告をした。また今年度は、教科書を軸とする考察をおこない、「教科書を／で考える」と題するワークショップを、8月29日、3月8日と二回にわたって催した。冷戦文化のなかでの歴史教育に接近する試みであった。さらに、成田は、「「3.11」を経て、あらためて戦後思想を考える」と題するセミナーを4月18日、5月16日、5月30日、6月13日、6月20日の４回にわたっておこない、冷戦文化のなかにおける作家・大江健三郎、社会学者・見田宗介、映画監督・篠田正浩、さらに文化人類学者・山口昌男について論じた。

We investigated the rolls of typical magazines of the era, making the tables of contents and indexes of them.

    Narita Ryuichi and Toba Koji, Sato Izumi, Iwasaki Minoru, Michiba Chikanobu, Tobe Hideaki have monthly workshop deal with "JINMIN BUNGAKU" which is the magazine of circle movement.
    They published the result of workshop as supplement of "GENDAI SHISO" (SENGO MINSYU SEISINNSI =The popular mentality of Post-war Japan 2007. 12)."GENDAI SHISO" includes three articles which they wrote. One is "Shimomaruko Bunkasyudan and his era" and the other is "Ezima Kan", which are written by Michiba. And this magazine includes Iwasaki's article titled "Between the Poem and work",also."GENDAI SHISO" has also reprinted the clnology concerning the Shimomaruko Bunkasyudan written by Kido Noboru,and the articles concerned the circle magazine published in Shimomaruko aria, for example "Tanpopo" "Aburasashi". So, "GENDAI SHISO" is very useful for research the era of 1950's history in Japan, especially in cultural history.
    And they ordered the circle magazine which Hamaga Tomohiko has collected.
    Osa Shizue researched AmamiIsland,and Toba researched the circle magazine in Hokkaido.
    Narita, Iwasaki and Toba participated the international conference in Columbia University in 2004-2007 hosted by MJHW (Modern Japanese History Workshop). They reported the cultural history in 1950's in Japan.
    And Toba and Ikegami reported in the TURUMI KAZUKO Symposium in Kyoto in 2007.

    前年度に引き続き、国内外の図書館・文学館・美術館において前衛文学・芸術と記録文学についての資料収集を行い、当時の関係者へのインタビューも行う一方、安部公房を中心とする前衛文学や戦後の政治・芸術運動に関する事実の整理を行った。
    「実践としての寓話-安部公房とイソップ-」は、安部公房が政治的前衛として直接性を希求するあまり、文学的に低迷したと言われる時期の寓意文学を扱った。イソップ寓話の改作にオリジナルを混ぜて発表された安部の寓話には、言論による実践の一形態として、直接的に労働者・人民に訴える力としての期待がこめられていた。こうした作風は重層的な意味を持った前衛文学やストレートな記録文学に対して軽視されがちであるが、当時の状況下でのターゲットと効果を踏まえれば、新たな鉱脈として見えてくるのである。
    「サークル誌ネットワークの可能性-『人民文学』と『新日本文学』から見る戦後ガリ版文化-」は、前年度の成果「『人民文学』総目次」をフルに活用することで実現した最初の成果である。1950年代に流行したガリ版サークル誌についての研究であるが、これらの雑誌の現物の多くは失われてしまっている。そのため、個々の雑誌の情報を集めた二雑誌、『新日本文学』と『人民文学』に注目し、その批評言説や転載テクストによってサークル誌が置かれていた状況とその可能性を探る試みである。二誌を通して見えてくるのは、よく言われる東京一極集中型の大量出版・大量消費時代の文学ではなく、匿名性や共同性を帯びた小規模出版のネットワークによって形づくられた共同的な文学の場であった。これは今日のデジタル・ネットワーク時代に再考される価値を十分に持つものである。
    三年間の研究を通じ、戦後期の前衛文学・芸術と記録文学が、相互に複雑に絡みあって形成されていく様が見えてきた。今後も同時代の政治状況との関連を重視しながら研究を進めていきたい。

    The aim of this project is to make clear the development of 'table talk' as a literary genre in modern Japan, mainly dealing with periodical magazines. Thus far, we have examined how 'table talk' influenced the relationship between the author and the reader and, furthermore, functioned as a framework for creative/critical writing for writers to act as spokespeople of social consciousness.
    The achievements of our project can be listed as follows : first of all, thanks to our continuing basic research on the 'table talk' articles which appeared in Japanese magazines, we have compiled a large database of information about Japanese table talk. This particularly significant because scholars have previously paid little attention to this field and the genre of 'table talk' has remained a blank section in Japanese literary history. Our project completion report includes the whole body of the database.
    Secondly, we have established a network connecting academics in the field during the three years of our research project, by holding regular sessions and seminars not only among the members of the project but also with guest speakers. For example, in August 2005, we invited Mr.Koichiro Hoshino to our seminar. Mr.Hoshino was an editor of Bungaku (Iwanami Publishers), a literary magazine which has published various 'table talk' articles. Also in our regular sessions, we had active discussions about a range of topics to extend each scholar's area of study. The titles of our sessions have included : 'The Birth of "Table Talk" in Modern Japan', 'Shincho Gappyokai as Table Talk and Its Conditions', 'Why Is Table Talk Called "Table Talk"?', 'Table Talk after the War', 'Dialogic Forms in Memoirs in Early Modern Japan', and 'The Birth of a Compilation of Conversations'. Through these workshops, we have made clear the birth and development of 'table talk' in modern Japan, its connection with the early modern period and subsequent disconnection from it, the pioneering significance of 'critical sessions' popular in the Meiji era, the interrelationship between 'table talk' and the developing mass media, and the influence of 'table talk'. The details of these achievements are described in our project completion report.

    高度成長期のマスメディアと、アマチュアが担ったサークル運動における「記録」との相互依存的な関係を検証し、今日的な意義を探ることを目的とする科学研究費補助金基盤研究(C)20K00302「高度成長期のマスメディアとサークルの「記録」との相互関係についての研究」を補完するものとして、個人作家にフォーカスしつつ、国際的な展開を探る本研究を構想した。特に1970年代、安部公房スタジオの活動と、同時に書いて出版した『箱男』の構想の変遷について研究し、成果を発表した。また、安部公房スタジオ最後の舞台である『仔象は死んだ』のアメリカ公演について、アメリカ側のアーカイブで収集してきた資料をもとに研究を進め、2022年のカリフォルニア大学リバーサイド校での国際ワークショップでの研究発表につながるものとなった。

    　東アジアの文学について、アメリカとの関係に着目し、国際的・学際的な視点から、従来の一国主義的な文学史記述の枠組みを超える、新しい読みかえをすることを目的として研究を進めた。具体的には、リーハイ大学で開かれた在日文学ワークショップにおいて、1950年代のサークル運動に表れた東アジアへの想像力について、主としてアメリカの在日文学研究者たちと議論することで、アメリカとの関係を考察した。また、安部公房の初期作品と坂本九「上を向いて歩こう」を植民地主義の余生として考察し、安部公房についてのリチャード・カリチマンの著作を分析することで、一国主義的でない読みかえの可能性を追求した。

    安部公房の評伝の完成に向けて、さらに調査を深めた。本研究では、サークル運動と関わりながら、独自の道を進んだ安部の軌跡に即した調査・研究を行った。具体的には、昨年度に引き続いて安部公房の関係者へのインタビューや関係者が書いた文章などの調査を進め、外側から見た安部公房像を明らかにしていった。また、自ら「消しゴムで書く」と言い、私小説的な書き方を嫌った安部公房自身が書いた小説、エッセイ、自筆年譜などを検討し、周囲の証言との照合から、伝記的な事実を明らかにしていった。一方、安部の作品の変遷から見える、思想的な履歴なども同時に考察した。

  • 安部公房に関する伝記的研究

    　本研究では、安部の出生から死までの伝記的な事項を精査しつつ、その間に書かれた代表的な作品や、全集未収録の作品などについても紹介し、作家であり劇作家でありテレビやラジオや映画のシナリオライターであり、舞台の演出家でもあった安部公房という人間の全体像を捉えることを試みた。　本年度には、安部公房についての編著を一冊、分担執筆で序文も寄せた本を一冊と、伝記調査の過程で得られた安部公房の父・安部浅吉についてのエッセイを発表することができた。また、関係者へのインタビューに関わる成果として、安部公房スタジオの女優として活躍した山口果林氏所蔵の写真、台本などの資料を、演劇博物館に寄贈する仲介者の役割を果たすことができた。この資料は、安部公房研究のみならず、現代演劇研究資料として活用されていくことになるだろう。　来年度に向けては、ひきつづき安部公房の関係者へのインタビューや関係者が書いた文章などの調査を進め、外側から見た安部公房像を明らかにしていく。また、自ら「消しゴムで書く」と言い、私小説的な書き方を嫌った安部公房自身が書いた小説、エッセイ、自筆年譜などを検討し、周囲の証言との照合から、伝記的な事実を明らかにしていく。一方、安部の作品の変遷から見える、思想的な履歴なども同時に問題にしていく予定である。　また、評伝の出版とは別に、出版社から安部公房に関する事典の編集も委嘱され、信州大学の友田義行助教らと共に進めていくことになった。これは五年計画ぐらいの長期的なものになるが、今年度はその最初の段階として、編集委員や執筆者を定め、項目や構成についてのプランを練っていくことになる。そのためにも、伝記的な調査だけでなく、個々の小説、エッセイ、戯曲、シナリオ、評論などの内容や背景についての調査が必要になってくるため、安部公房に関する総合的研究と題して、その長期計画の基礎固めを行っていくこととしたい。　今回の研究費で編著を寄贈した方々には伝記調査で引き続きご協力を頂くことになるし、アメリカの二人とは５月のシンポジウムで共に発表することも予定しているので、そうした共同研究の成果も評伝に生かされていくことになるだろう。

  • 渥美半島における戦後文化運動の研究

    　これまで1950年代のサークル運動や記録文学について研究してきた成果を、別所興一氏、若杉美智子氏と共に、渥美半島に住んだ作家・杉浦明平に関する共著『杉浦明平を読む　“地域”から“世界”へ―行動する作家の全軌跡』として刊行することができた。また、全国的なサークル運動、中でも詩の運動について、「へたくそ詩」をめぐる学会発表と論文の形でまとめることができた。　福岡と長崎での調査では、渥美半島のグループからサークル村と大正行動隊の視察に行った清田和夫との接点があり得た画家の菊畑茂久馬氏の講演を聞き、資料を見ることができた。また、福岡市文学館の調査からは、前述の学会発表や論文への手掛かりを得ることができた。沖縄の調査では、戦後文化運動の中でも重要な地位を占めた版画運動の二つの起源として、ドイツのケーテ・コルヴィッツ、中国の魯迅との関係を確認し、さらにそれらと関わった日本の画家たちの活動を確認することができたし、幻灯などの新たな資料についても今後の調査の必要を確認することができた。　今年度中に形にならなかったが最も重要な成果としては、川口務氏に二回、森下隆蔵氏に一回行った聞き取り調査が挙げられる。戦後初期から杉浦明平と共に活動してきた川口氏と森下氏のお話は、杉浦の著書には表れていないディテールに富んでおり、それぞれ別の角度からの渥美半島の文化運動史と政治運動史の証言となっていた。現在は大連在住の森下氏の帰国のタイミングを待ったため年度末ぎりぎりでの調査となってしまったが、この調査には、以前から共同で渥美半島の聞き取り調査をしてきた道場親信氏、別所興一氏、若杉美智子氏も同行した。こうした調査結果をまとめていく中で、当初の構想であった渥美半島の戦後文化運動をめぐる共著につなげていきたいと考えている。　今回の研究は、2012年度からの科学研究費補助金・基盤研究（Ｃ）「戦後期日本のサークル運動と文学についての発展的研究」の中で継続し、さらに発展させていく予定である。
