View Summary
Composed of specialists in art history, restoration, archaeology, and so on, our interdisciplinary research group investigated Japanese Christian relics. Besides the senior researcher and co-researcher, more than 40 researchers with doctoral degrees collaborated in ten investigations; most of the subsidy was appropriated for their travel expenses and fees. We published a treatise in 2012 and a report in 2014 as a part of our achievements. The co-researcher conducted various investigations in Japan and Italy and read a report at the International Congress. Overall, we were able to investigate almost all the presently accessible Christian relics in Japan
Early Gothic Art of Northern Italy - Monasteries in Emilia

View Summary
During the second half of the 12th century, the so-called Lombard Romanesque art was evolving into Gothic in a very distinctive manner. To elucidate its artistic circumstances, the present study has investigated three monasteries in Emilia of Nothern Italy, such as the Cistercensian Chiaravalle della Colomba and Fontevivo, and the Benedictine Castione dei Marchesi, besides the Italian city-state cathedrals of Piacenza, Lodi and Fidenza.A new perspective was found regarding the political factors behind the introduction of French Gothic, the relationships between monastic workshops and cathedral workshops, and the iconography of the Adam and Eve in the main portals

Studies on the Iconography of the Northern Italian Late-Romanesque/Early-Gothic Sculpture centering around Fidenza Cathedral
View Summary
Even though there are still many points of controversy on the subject, it is generally agreed that Lombardian Romanesque sculpture between the second half of the 12th century and the early 13th century had been evolving an inherent iconography which incorporated the French gothic art languages.Based on these circumstances, this research speculates about its transitional features putting into perspective various arguments centering around Fidenza Cathedral, as well as the Baptistery of Parma, Piacenza Cathedral, Modena Cathedral and Lodi Cathedral. The main issues are the following.(1) The statues of the Prophets at the sides of the main portal of the facadeThe way in which the iconography of the Prophets with the Virgin glorifies the church's buildings as the house of God as well as the womb of the Virgin is studied taking into consideration the cistercsian thought of the time.(2) The statues of Adam and Eve at the sides of the main portal of the facadeThis research describes how this iconography involves not only the "Ordo raprentationis ade", but also the fact that confession had been acknowledged as a sacrament by the Lateran Council of 1215.(3) The representation of agriculture in the Genesis circle of the facadeThe notion of agricultural labor in Italian medieval City-States is examined taking into consideration the social and political situation around that time
The Concept of "Beauty" in the history of Western Medieval Philosophy : Neoplatonic Tradition and its Historical Development
View Summary
Our project aims at the historical studies of the concept of beauty in western medieval philosophy under the influences of Neoplatonic tradition. We analyze philosophical literature of Plotinus and his descendants and of Christian philosophers, and make clear the aesthetic problems of "beauty." Our aesthetic viewpoints on them are on the identity between beauty and light, the medieval artifacts just as liturgical art, and the metaphysical concept of the transcendence of beauty. So, our project has significances on the historical research of aesthetics and medieval philosophy
