    In this research, we investigated in the economic mechanism of intermediary, by comparing among the matching markets of employment, marriage, retail, real estate, and foster-children. Although we have not yet reached the general theory of intermediaries, we succeeded in constructing new evidences about marriage markets and retail markets. These new findings imply the crucial points for theoretical consideration and empirical studies on intermediary. Besides, a new aspect on the intermediary, the role of policy intermediary, sheds light on the fact that there are still non-negligible workers who do not know their own employment status in the Japanese labor markets.

    This research aims at broadening the framework of the traditional welfare economics, by exploring the possibility of the capability approach in the welfare economics. Concretely, first, we widen the domain of the Sennian social welfare functional and investigate the normative characteristics of the social relation function which is formulated with the capability indexes, second, we construct an individual’s capability set through aggregating achievement vectors of individuals who have similar utilization abilities and resources and different evaluation functions, which are freely chosen according to their own evaluations. We have the following results: having information on capabilities of order women, persons with limited sights and patients with home care services is a clue for making consensus and common understanding among residents in general with regard to more efficient and fairer distributional methods of resources.

    Through collaborative research by development economists and comparative economic historians, we have compiled original databases on economic development collected from current developing countries in Asia and Africa and from historical archives on pre-war Japan and empirically analyzed the determinants/impacts of institutions and policies using such databases. By systematic comparison of such empirical analyses covering different periods and regions, we have identified characteristics of institutions and policies useful for sustained poverty reduction in the long run and their interactions with market conditions. We have not only contributed to the academics through research papers but also with the compilation of databases to be made public and policy recommendations based on empirical evidence.
