  • Still in the Making: The Culture of Improvisation in American Modernism (PhD dissertation)

    Ryo Hagino

State University of New York at Stony Brook, United States -- New York    2024

The dissertation posits that the concept of improvisation is a key aspect of American modernism, enabling artists of the era to explore ways to articulate a form that is diverse and multicultural, yet unified without succumbing to homogeneity. With the nationalist concern during modernism of imagining America as distinctly different from European traditions, the idea of America as a nation of democracy, still in the process of making itself, provided a significant symbolic form for the intellectuals and artists of American modernism to articulate their own version of what the nation and its art should be. This “still in the making” image of America provides a fundamental backdrop for the culture of improvisation in American modernism. Through improvisation, the authors of American modernism incorporate the dissident voices of the Other into their writing, cultivating their own aesthetic theories and practices to shape a yet-to-be-realized community of the unknown future. While the pragmatist philosophy of William James and John Dewey reveals a form of improvisational thinking, and the emergence of jazz offers an exemplary practice of musical improvisation, the dissertation instead investigates the American literary modernists’ utilization of both the practice and theory of improvisation. The Introduction lays out how improvisation can be situated within the particular intellectual context of American modernism, introducing key concepts about improvisation, such as “process,” “negotiation,” and “problem-finding,” by referring to discussions in the field of critical studies of improvisation. The first chapter repositions Anzia Yezierska, an immigrant Jewish writer, within a critical framework traditionally associated with jazz and other African American improvisational cultures, investigating how she challenges assimilationist narratives by employing improvisational aesthetics to articulate the “otherness” of her immigrant experience. Subsequent three chapters explore William Carlos Williams’s engagement with improvisation both as a practice and as a theory. Moral perfectionism, a concept linked to Emerson but distinct from pragmatism, allows for a broader exploration of improvisation within the American intellectual tradition, highlighting Williams’s vision of a democratic America characterized by diversity and an authentic American expression. The dissertation also investigates the influence of physiology on Williams’s poetics, particularly his integration of medical knowledge into his literary work, positioning his body as an automatic writing machine. By investigating the nineteenth-century intellectual context about the body/machine dynamic and the technological and gender shift in writing, it becomes clear how Williams’s improvisation shares the same context with the automatic writings by spiritualists, psychologists, and physiological devices. The final chapter examines Claude McKay’s Banjo: A Story without a Plot, using Michel de Certeau’s theory of tactics to understand improvisation as a vehicle for spontaneous, self-organized resistance against oppressive nation-states. This analysis places McKay’s work in a broader conversation about imperialism and colonization, challenging the notion of jazz as a uniquely American phenomenon and portraying improvisational music culture on a transatlantic scale. Overall, this dissertation unveils the culture of improvisation in American modernism as a complex, multifaceted entity that interacts with the aesthetic and political discourses of a nation “still in the making,” offering new insights into the interplay of improvisation with racial, ethnic, and national identities.

While criticisms on Truman Capote's Breakfast at Tiffany's (1958) centered around the political/sexual radicalism of its heroine, Holly Golightly, and her pervasiveness, they have long dismissed the novel's unknown narrator as just a neutral observer or Capote's homosexual double. This paper examines how this underestimated narrator functions as a key to the novel's strategic resistance to the repressive normative society of the Cold War era. Heterosexism thinking typical of the Cold War era is revealed in contemporary readers' facile reading of the narrator's sexual passivity toward Holly as a sign of being homosexual, and therefore critics who have often been eager to detect the narrator's closeted homosexuality cannot avoid being blamed for having made the same misrecognition. Rather, the narrator's passivity should be considered as a rejection of compulsory heterosexism and its demanding performance as an "authentic" man. In this respect, as Holly's naming of the unknown narrator after her brother symbolically shows, their friendship is an escape from the reality of the 50s, when maturation and building a "nuclear family" become the social obsession. Through the reading of the narrator's obsessive feeling toward Holly, we can see the Holly-narrator relationship as a surrogate for "mother-child" relationship and the leaving of Holly at the end is, for the narrator, the loss of "mother." The whole impression of the novel, however, is rather gentle and hopeful. To explicate this, we'll trace the narrator's career and development as an author by examining the aesthetic structure of his two short stories and the novel itself, which was written by the matured narrator. In Breakfast at Tiffany's the narrator, as well as Capote himself, managed to sublimate the loss of "mother" and could therefore write a story outside of dominant scheme of Heterosexism ideology and the discourse of the Cold War era.

This paper reconsiders William Carlos Williams as a precursor and formative influence on the poetics of the Beat Generation by foregrounding a lesser-known dimension of his work: his commitment to improvisation. Central to this investigation is the Beat writers’ aesthetics of spontaneity—particularly in the works of Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and Michael McClure—and its grounding in a physiological conception of the body rooted in 19th-century science. Rather than viewing spontaneity as a purely romantic or as merely an extension of the Beats’ engagement with jazz and its improvisational ethos, I argue that Beat writers inherited a model of the body as an automatic, expressive system shaped by developments in neurology and reflex physiology. Williams, as both a physician and poet, serves as a key figure who bridges the temporal and cultural gap between 19th-century medical discourse and mid-20th-century poetics. His interest in the involuntary rhythms of the body—formed through medical training and exposure to physiological texts—provided an alternative epistemology of composition: one where writing emerges not from will or psyche, but from somatic impulse. Kerouac’s “spontaneous prose” and Ginsberg’s breath-based lineation, when read from this parspective, participate in a broader scientific imaginary in which the nervous system becomes a model for artistic production. In this anachronistic yet illuminating framing, Williams emerges as an “Other Beat”—one who shared with the Beats a fascination with the body as the site where intersubjective and environmental forces converge in the act of writing. Finally, the paper contrasts this American tradition of embodied improvisation with European Surrealist automatism. Whereas Surrealism emphasized psychic depth and the unconscious mind, American artists like Williams and the Beats foregrounded the body’s responsiveness to its actual, local environment. Their poetics of spontaneity thus reflect a distinctly American engagement with improvisation—rooted not in transcendence through the unconscious, as in Surrealism, but in heightened corporeal connection to the material and social world.

Even though the Harlem Renaissance flourished during the "Jazz Age," the world of jazz was nearly a silenced note in the historiography of the movement. As Ted Gioia notes, Harlem's cultural and literary elite often showed contempt or ignorance toward the music emerging not only in cabarets or luxurious clubs, but also among locals at rent parties. “Jazz was very much a part of this second Harlem—more at home here than in the ‘other’ Harlem of high culture and higher aspirations.” This paper seeks to address this gap by exploring how the "other" Harlem can be understood through the lens of scholarly discussions on the former. On this note, it is noteworthy that Duke Ellington later acknowledged the contribution of Caribbean musicians, deeply rooted in “the West Indian legacy of the Marcus Garvey movement,” to the development of jazz. Garvey, whose views frequently conflicted with those of W. E. B. Du Bois, introduced a framework of economic self-sufficiency and Black nationalist commercialism into the discourse, offering a counterpoint to the Harlem Renaissance's aspirations for art and literature. This Caribbean connection, linking Garvey and West Indian musicians, also resonates with another key Harlem Renaissance figure, Claude McKay. A leading poet of the movement, McKay shifted to prose in the late 1920s and produced one of its most successful novels, Home to Harlem, which depicted the district where thousands of West Indians migrated, and tens of thousands of their children were born. By reading McKay’s novels and examining the intersections of Garveyism and Caribbean musical culture in Harlem, I will tune into the sounds that the literary Harlem Renaissance often failed to hear.
