  • Effects of a 7-day step taper, training cessation, and retraining on lower body physical and morphological aspects in elite female ice hockey players

    Purpose

    This study investigated the effects of a 7-day step taper before a national championship, followed by 2 weeks of training cessation and 2 weeks of retraining on lower body physical and morphological aspects.

    Methods

    Seven elite female ice hockey players (age: 23 ± 4 years) participated in six testing sessions: two baseline sessions, one pre-championship (after taper), one after a 2-week training cessation, and two following retraining (after 1 week and after 2 weeks). Assessments included body composition, vastus lateralis muscle architecture (muscle thickness, pennation angle, fascicle length), and lower body vertical force–time metrics [countermovement jump (CMJ), squat jump (SJ), and loaded SJ]. During the tapering period, training duration was reduced by 35%. During retraining, participants performed three weekly sessions of fast eccentric squats, with 4 sets of 8 repetitions per session, gradually increasing intensity from 45.5% to 63.5% of estimated 1RM.

    Results

    Tapering did not affect any of the lower body physical and morphological measures. Training cessation induced declines in braking rate of force development (13.1%, p < 0.05), braking peak force during CMJ (5.5%, p < 0.05), and muscle mass (3.6%, p = 0.03). All metrics returned to post-taper values within 1 week of retraining.

    Conclusions

    2 weeks of training cessation induced minor declines in eccentric muscle performance, but recovered within 1 week of retraining. This study provides valuable insights for practitioners in designing effective peaking, off season and retraining programs in female ice hockey.

J Strength Cond Res XX(X): 000-000, 2025-The purpose of this study was to assess factors influencing change of direction (COD) deficit (CODD) and total time completion (CODTT) in adolescent soccer players through velocity-time profile analysis of the Pro-Agility Test. We enrolled 71 junior high school male soccer players and measured the 20-m sprint time and CODTT of the Pro-Agility Test, calculating CODD by subtracting the 20-m sprint time from CODTT. In addition, 3-dimensional motion data were collected using a markerless motion capture system during the Pro-Agility Test. Each section (5 m in the first, 10 m in the second, and 5 m in the third) was divided into acceleration and deceleration phases based on center of mass (COM) velocity, which were further divided into early and late halves. The mean COM acceleration during the acceleration phase (Acc) and deceleration during the deceleration phase (Dec) were calculated. Stepwise multiple regression analysis was performed to identify phases affecting CODTT and CODD. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05. Total time completion of a COD task was explained by the second early Acc (β = -0.500), second late Dec (β = 0.433), and 20-m sprint time (β = 0.226) (adjusted R2 = 0.858), whereas CODD was explained by the second late Dec (β = 0.561) and second early Acc (β = -0.271) (adjusted R2 = 0.459). Maturity offset significantly correlated with CODTT (r = -0.456) but not with CODD (r = -0.119). The results indicated that deceleration and reacceleration during the Pro-Agility Test can be evaluated in adolescents by combining CODTT and CODD.

    Introduction

    Change of direction (COD) maneuvers are frequently performed during soccer games and are critical for performance. Adolescent players often display immature COD maneuvers, suggesting that COD technique modification training may be a more effective approach for adolescent athletes. This study investigated the acute effects of COD modification training on COD performance and kinematics in male adolescent soccer players.

    Methods

    Twenty-nine male junior high school soccer players participated in this study and were divided into two groups: 16 players underwent 15-min COD technique modification training (COD group), while 13 players engaged in 15-min linear sprint training. The participants performed Pro-Agility and 20-m sprint tests before and after the intervention, and the total times were measured. COD deficit (CODD) was calculated as the difference between these times. Center of mass (COM) velocity and trunk and lower limb kinematics were computed from three-dimensional kinematic data collected during the Pro-Agility test using a markerless motion capture system. Each section of the Pro-Agility test was divided into acceleration and deceleration phases based on the COM velocity; Stop marks the moment of direction change. Two-way (group and time) mixed ANOVA was conducted with Bonferroni corrections for post-hoc comparisons.

    Results

    No significant interactions were observed in the total time of the Pro-Agility test, CODD, 20-m sprint time, or average acceleration and deceleration in each phase (p &amp;gt; 0.05). On the other hand, the COD group showed significant interactions and improvements in average deceleration from final foot (FF) contact to Stop (p = 0.012, g = 0.639), penultimate foot hip flexion angle at Stop (p = 0.042, g = 0.496), COM-FF horizontal distance at Stop (p = 0.008, g = 0.650), and FF ground contact time (p &amp;lt; 0.001, g = 0.803).

    Conclusion

    A 15-min COD technique modification training led to partial, immediate improvements in kinematic parameters among adolescent soccer players but did not enhance overall COD performance or acceleration/deceleration ability.

  • Increasing Braking and Amortization Forces during the Countermovement Jump Does Not Necessarily Improve Jump Height

    This study aimed to investigate the acute effects of altering the braking rate of force development (B-RFD) and amortization force (Amf) during countermovement jumps (CMJs) on CMJ height. Nineteen healthy men and women with training experience participated, performing six CMJ variations at different velocities (preferred and fast) and depths (knee angles: 60°, 90°, and 120°). The measured variables included CMJ height, B-RFD, Amf, and impulses during the early and latter halves of the concentric phase (EI and LI, respectively). A two-way analysis of variance was employed, along with a correlational analysis of the rates of change for each variable. Significant velocity and depth effects were observed for B-RFD and Amf (p &lt; 0.05). However, there was no significant velocity effect on CMJ height. No significant correlations were observed between the rates of change in B-RFD and Amf with CMJ height. Additionally, a high or a very high correlation (r ≥ 0.67) was observed between the rate of change in B-RFD and Amf with the rate of change in EI, while a moderate negative correlation (r = −0.43 to −0.53) was found between the rate of change in EI and LI. These findings suggest that improvements in B-RFD and Amf were associated with improvements in EI, while improvements in EI led to a reduction in LI, and consequently, improvements in B-RFD and Amf were not associated with an increase in CMJ height. In other words, improvements in B-RFD and Amf did not necessarily contribute to improvements in CMJ height.

    Abstract

J Strength Cond Res 37(11): 2141–2148, 2023—The aims of this study were threefold: to investigate the force-velocity profile during the braking phase (bFVP) of the countermovement jump (CMJ) and its relationship with other performance indicators, and whether it could be measured using the two-point method. Sixteen trained men performed 6 different loaded CMJs (0%, 32 kg, 60, 80, 100, and 120% body mass), and eccentric strength measurements were determined. Scatter plots were created using the mean force and velocity during the braking phase of each loaded CMJ. The corrected Akaike’s information criterion (AICc) was calculated by fitting linear, quadratic, and cubic regression equations to the bFVP and compared using the 1-way analysis of variance and Bonferroni’s post hoc tests. A correlation analysis was performed between the bFVP and other performance indicators. A bias assessment was performed to validate the 2-point method of the bFVP. The significance level was set at p &lt; 0.05. The AICc in the linear regression equation was significantly lower (p &lt; 0.05) than those in the other regression equations. Significant correlations were found between the slope and theoretical maximum force of the bFVP obtained from the linear regression equation and eccentric 1 repetition maximum. The acceptable condition for bias was met by 0–120%. The bFVP is likely to have a linear relationship and can be associated with eccentric strength. Furthermore, the 2-point method in bFVP has validity.

    The purpose of this systematic review was to summarize the associations of eccentric force variables during jumping and eccentric lower-limb strength with vertical jump performance. A literature search was conducted in September 2022 using PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus. Thirteen cross-sectional studies investigating the relationship between eccentric force and strength variables, such as force, rate of force development (RFD), power, time, and velocity, and vertical jump performance, including the jump height, reactive strength index (RSI), and reactive strength index-modified (RSImod), were included in this systematic review. As eccentric strength, variables during the unloading-to-braking phase of countermovement jump (CMJ) (force, RFD, etc.) and the eccentric force of the squat movement and knee joint were included. The CMJ height, RSImod, and drop jump RSI were included to analyze the vertical jump performance. The modified form of the Downs and Black checklist was used to evaluate quality. Associations between the force and RFD during the descending phase of the CMJ and jump height were observed in some studies but not in others, with differences between the studies. Some studies reported associations between the force and/or RFD during the descending phase of the CMJ and RSImod of the CMJ, with no differences among their results. In addition, there are associations of the eccentric forces during squatting and knee extension with the CMJ and the drop jump heights and RSI of the drop jump. The eccentric force variables in the CMJ and RSImod are related; however, their relationship with jump height remains unclear. Furthermore, improved eccentric muscle strength may contribute to vertical jump height because of the associations of the eccentric strength during knee extension and squatting with jump height.

  • Effect of Different Slopes of the Lower Leg during the Nordic Hamstring Exercise on Hamstring Electromyography Activity

    The purpose of this study was to examine whether the NHE with an increased lower leg slope angle would enhance hamstring EMG activity in the final phase of the descend. The hamstring EMG activity was measured, the biceps femoris long head (BFlh) and the semitendinosus (ST). Fifteen male volunteers participated in this study. Subjects performed a prone leg curl with maximal voluntary isometric contraction to normalize the hamstring EMG activity. Subsequently, subjects performed the NHE, with the help of a certified strength and conditioning specialist, while the lower leg slope angle were randomly set at 0° (NH), 20° (N20), and 40° (N40). To compare hamstring EMG activity during the NHE variations, the knee flexion angle was set in the range from 0° to 50°, divided into five phases (0–10°, 10–20°, 20–30°, 30–40° and 40–50°), where 0° indicated that the knee was fully extended. To calculate the knee extension angular velocity, the knee flexion angle divided by time, and break point angle (BPA) was the angle at which 10°/s was exceeded. In the statistical analysis, a two-way repeated measures ANOVA was used for the hamstring EMG activity and a one-way repeated measures ANOVA was used for the BPA. The EMG activity of the BFlh and the ST in N20 and N40 was significantly higher than in NH at knee flexion angle of 0–20° (p &lt; 0.05). For the BPA, NH (57.75° ± 13.28°), N20 (36.27° ± 9.89°) and N40 (16.26° ± 9.58°) were significantly higher in that order (p &lt; 0.05). The results of this study revealed that the NHE with an increased lower leg slope angle shifted the BPA to the lower knee flexion angle and enhanced the hamstring EMG activity in the final phase of the descent.
