     View Summary

In a period of technological changes, new entrants to an industry are able to take advantage of emerging technologies, while incumbent firms have difficulty following trends. This study examines the position of new entrants that develop existing technologies, by exploring the historical case of radical technological change from vacuum tube to transistor technology in the case of Ise Electronics. The study investigates the innovation process involved in extending an existing technology through an entrepreneurial venture. This case analysis suggests that the extension of existing technologies is made possible by developing them and embedding them in products utilizing an emerging technology, and that bridges between old and new technologies can be built through personal and professional connections formed within an existing industry.

This study investigates a microfoundation of the structural change of business ecosystem. While previous studies point out environmental shocks and subsequent entrepreneurial behaviors, we focus on the effect of several actors' interactions within the ecosystem. By using the concept of Weick (1979)' s enactment, we build up the chain reaction framework of multiplayers' interpretation and action. Through an in-depth case study of the transition of Silicon Valley ecosystem from an IPO-centered model to a M&A-centered one, we illustrates how startups, established business companies, venture capitals and research institutes interact each other and how those interactions effect on ecosystem transition.

  • A Comparative Study on R&D Organizations in Specialized Manufacturer and Generalized Manufacturer: A Case Analysis in the Vacuum Fluorescent Display Industry

     View Summary

It is often pointed out that a specialized manufacturer ("specialist") is more competitive than a generalized manufacturer ("generalist"). This paper examines how a specialist could maintain long-term competitive advantages, especially in the technological development. An explanatory case study was conducted by comparing a small specialist Futaba and a big generalist NEC in the vacuum fluorescent display (VFD) industry.<BR>Based on the analysis of patent data at the firm level and the individual level, two types of R&D organizations were identified: a successive, crosssectoral and closely cooperated R&D organization in Futaba and an R&D organization in which personnel can be flexibly reallocated in NEC. NEC's composition of four technological fields of VFD radically changed, while Futaba's remained stable. This finding is different from the common understanding that typical Japanese big firms have succeeded in incremental innovations by a close-knit group of engineers. Instead, this paper demonstrates that the technological capability that is characteristic of Japanese firms has been maintained in a small specialist.
