     View Summary

The prosodic characteristics of a native language greatly influence early language acquisition. Yet, Japanese mothers are known to use a specific prosodic structure in infant-directed vocabulary (IDV)-specifically, three-mora, two-syllable words with a heavy-light pattern-which, crucially, differs from the standard prosodic rhythm of adult vocabulary. This study used near-infrared spectroscopy to examine hemodynamic responses to the Japanese IDV form in 5-month-old (n = 31) and 9-month-old (n = 34) Japanese infants, targeting the period before and during the emergence of this preference. The results revealed that oxygenated hemoglobin was greater for the IDV form than for the non-IDV form in the left superior temporal gyrus (STG) for both age groups, consistent with the advantage of the IDV form observed in previous behavioral studies. Furthermore, this effect was localized to the left middle and left posterior STG in 5- and 9-month-old infants, respectively, highlighting early sensitivity to its prosodic structure followed by the emergence of phonological representation. This cortical shift, along with an observed trend toward adult-like patterns, may suggest a broader transition from perceptually accessible IDV structures to the more diverse patterns of standard adult vocabulary. Although 5-month-old infants who have not yet exhibited a preference for the IDV form may not have developed specific phonological representations, their brains' ability to process its prosodic pattern could serve as a foundation for subsequent learning. These findings demonstrate that the specific structure of Japanese IDV acts as a foundational scaffold, guiding the transition from initial prosodic tuning to mature word-level processing. SUMMARY: Early sensitivity to prosodic structure was observed in 5-month-old Japanese infants. Emerging phonological representation was observed in 9-month-old Japanese infants. Japanese infant-directed vocabulary form serves as a prosodic template.

     View Summary

In Experiment 1, 3 year-old children tried to determine pitch sequences by matching them with pictures and musical sounds. The results showed that 3 year-olds had difficulty associating sounds with pictures and making choices between two stimuli. In Experiment 2, 97 children ages 2-6 were participants These children identified four musical sounds produced by Montessori bells. The children in Experiment 2 were more successful at identifying the sounds than the children in Experiment 1. Although it may not prove effective for 2-and 3-year old children, the results of Experiment 2 suggested a possible new method to evaluate the pitch discrimination abilities of young children.

The experiment described in this paper was designed to investigate the acoustics of living spaces, with the aim of fostering the design of more comfortable environments acoustically optimized for infant childcare. Recently, incidents of infant abuse reportedly triggered by excessive crying have been on the rise. One cause, we hypothesized, could be the changing structure of Japanese homes. Using recordings of crying meant to be maximally stress-inducing to mothers, the experiment was designed to examine the effect of a change in the acoustic environment upon a listener's perception of an infant's voice. Subjects were asked to listen to two recordings of the same voice at 90dB±1dB, the first given a reverberation time of 270 ms (simulating an “anechoic environment”), and the second with a time of 970 ms (an “echoic environment”). Subjects reported that they felt “tired,” “uneasy,” and that they experienced “headache” and “ringing in the ears” at a higher rate in the echoic than in the anechoic environment. However, responses indicating hypothetical maternal behavior such as a desire to“determine why the baby is crying”or to“calm the baby”were reported at approximately equal rates in both environments. These results indicate that an echoic environment may exacerbate the stress experienced by a mother listening to a crying infant.Further research examining the ways in which actual mother-infant pairs play and communicate in varying acoustic environments is planned.

The purpose of the present study is to analyze the characteristics of the living room space that provides comfortable environment for the infants and family members from the aspect of sound. This study focuses mainlyon the evaluation of the sound characteristics of the living space that support and maintain the development of verbal communication ability that can be cultivated significantly by the interaction between the infants and the parents. In this year, we directed our attention to the infant crying and study the relationship between the living space and the sound characteristics. We investigated the actual conditions of the sound pressure level (dB) and sound pitch (Hz) inherent to the infant crying. A total of 28 pairs of infants and mothers or fathers, two months to one year and 11 months in age, participated in the measurement. We recorded the infant crying at the site one meter apart from the infant's mouth in an anechoic room. The measurement data were analyzed and four patterns of sound characteristics were detected. The infant crying characterized by the high-frequency component and the large volume was recognized as a crying indicating increased emergency and appeared to have considerable effects on the surroundings. In this experiment, we take an approach to relate the parent's pattern of hearing of the infant crying with the sound environment inside of the room. The results of this study contribute to the process of remodeling of the living space, and to suggest for the recent childcare related problems including of child abuse.

It is well known that individual infants’ linguistic developmental trajectories vary widely from one individual to another. In order to determine what factors accompany such individual differences, we conducted a longitudinal study from 8 to 10 months of age focusing on the relationship between phonetic discrimination ability (at 8 months) and stress reactivity (at 10 months). First, we found large individual differences of 8-month-olds’ ability to discriminate Japanese vowel length (i.e. short vs. long vowels). Second, at 10 months, on the stress reactivity task, infants who cried showed an accelerated heart rate when separated with their mothers. We also found that salivary cortisol level negatively correlated with heart beat recovery. Furthermore, there was a correlation between stress reactivity and language comprehension.

We performed a study on voluntary song of the children. How a child was going to sing as grounds of the better song education in the childcare and the teacher training. We made the processing sound that changed three elements of the "length" "height" "intonation" about the sound at the time of the 3 sounds of 5 patterns of infants and conducted the hearing experiment. As a result, the high sound than the low sound, the longer sound than the short sound and the sound rose at the end of sounds clarified to seemed to be a song. And we perfprmed the acoustic analysis in addition to prosodic analysis. As a result, the high evaluation sound of the song degree tend to be relatively low sharpness when loudness had increased by the nonsteady loudness analysis with the sound quality evaluation system.

Japanese has special morae as components of its language-specific phonemic repertory to distinguish word meanings. In this study, we measured the neural and behavioral development of Japanese infants for the distinction of special morae. The results showed that Japanese infants acquired discrimination ability for long-short vowel contrasts and single/geminate obstruents at around 10 months of age, and that they did for other contrasts at earlier than 10 months of age. The results of the measurement of brain responses indicated that the timing of the left-shift varies according to the special morae. These results suggest that the developmental course differs among the moraic phonemes.

Caregivers sing songs to their infants in everyday life. It’s singing have clear communicative intention such as playful interactions and soothing. I investigated how infants process song itself and how they understand such intention, using both brain response and preferential looking experiment. The brain response demonstrated that infants showed different responses to song compared with speech at early in life. Furthermore eye movement results suggested that not only song itself but also singer’s gaze and singing behavior would be related to infants’ preference to singers.
